I'm always struggling with understanding my parents trauma but also recognizing that they didn't/weren't able to provide me what I needed emotionally, and at times passing onto me their own traumas, which I have to unlearn.
Its a process and I believe part of good therapy is working through "blaming" and looking to how you want to build the relationship with your parents you may have wanted when younger.
Of course, there are parent-child relationships that are awful enough (from either side) where severance is necessary. :/

I live in a small town in NC. We have a really great Chinese food restaurant that has been in business for atleast 30 years and operated by an awesome Chinese family. The Patriarch of the family, who started the restaurant that his grown children now operate, has always been one to fuss at customers. When I was a kid, I remember him fussing at me because I called bok choy "cabbage" "Isaa BOK CHOY! Bok choy issa NOT CABBAGE" 🤣 As an adult, I had a friend that fussed at for ordering too many egg rolls. "YOU EAT TOO MANY EGGROLLS! I have none for other customers! From now on, you only get two! ONLY TWO!". 🤣🤣🤣 He and his family are awesome folks and pillars in the community. But, he is HILARIOUSLY rude to customers sometimes. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

The Thai government and some Thai food businesses have long encouraged non-Thai people in other countries to open and operate Thai restaurants to encourage the purchase of Thai foods and the knowledge of Thai culture… lots of Thai restaurants here in the U. S. are run by white or Chinese Americans…

Plenty of people will have a skewed perception of other countries. Before moving to the UK, I thought every man would sound like Hugh Grant, and everything would be upscale. To much of my dismay, it has a closer resemblance to EastEnders.

Look I used to go to this teriyaki restaurant as a kid, and I used to hate going there because of the owner idk why but there was something about her look, like how Danielle explained the lady that owns the restaurant she goes to, she just looks pissed and I felt unwelcomed. But there was this one day I went with my mom and it was close to the holidays season and I saw her give out food to this one Mexican family that couldn't afford to buy any, she told them they can get whatever is on the menu, and then when they got done she gave them money idk how much but I saw her hand money to them! Since that day on my perspective of her as a person and as a restaurant owner changed! Like you've said in this podcast Nigel she could've had a rough pass, you never really know what a person went through. That's why I don't judge people anymore.

It's entirely unsurprising that in the US we're more like the Scottish, many of my ancestral countrymen settled here, and we're really basically unchanged from back home minus the accent. I went to a comedy club once in Edinburgh and they didn't even place me as a 16yo american, they served me a pint and some curry lamb nachos, and I laughed along with everyone else because I could understand the thick accent of the local comics just fine from having gamed with people from Glasgow and the Highlands for years before that, they were a big subset of the Everquest 2 guild I was a part of at the time. They raided during their evenings which were my mornings on the weekends, so it lined up perfectly while allowing me to stay free in the evening to have dinner with my family. Funny how little things like that can have a ripple down effect like that, I never expected that because of a rule my mom made about eating dinner as a family, that I'd end up learning how to understand an accent of a specific region before visiting there on vacation with said family. My Chinese step-dad was always supportive of my gaming though, he was smart and recognized the benefit for a socially awkward kid in being able to learn how to act like an adult by hanging out with people from all over the world in my age group or a bit older. One of the few things he didn't give me too much shit for lmao

I find it really strange to hear that Chicago is a small city when it's #3 largest after NY and LA. I've not been to Chicago yet but been to the other two so Chicago's probably not too far behind. It probably has the small town charm, but in my experience, it's found everywhere, even in the largest cities. I've not been to London so not sure how "cold" it is that gives rise to such comparisons : )

Out of curiosity, is there any truth to what you daughter is claiming? Like, were you not participating in her childhood and she didn't live with you? It's been my experience that; When young adults say this sort of thing there are usually two scenarios. Either said parent literally didn't play a physical role in raising the child, or the parent did raise the child and cottled them to the point where they now, as an adult, demand the same cottling and support they received as a child and are resenting their parent for not still sheltering them from accountability and responsibility when they make childish choices as adults.

Oh, my Dios....poor Matt! good ideas but now he's responsible to make it happen XDDD and laugh more, Matt! it's uncomfortable sometimes XD anyway, good one here. AAAAND I have something to say about what Matt's told about his friend who asked if he was from the mainland...... I have been here in China for ALMOST 8 years (probably one more year, it's too long) and I have been asked SO SO SO SO MANY TIMES 'WHERE ARE YOU FROM? are you studying or working? how much do you earn? but how much? are you married? do you have kids? how old are you? Can I have you WeChat?' and wearing a mask had saved me SO MANY TIMES to avoid being asked personal questions and not knowing how to kindly reject them. Also, they made way weird assumptions such as every black man is a basketball player, all the whites are from America, and more. So, I'm thinking about THAT situation that YOU SHOULDN'T ASK that ¬¬ I'm not sure how would be in other Asian countries, but this is just my experience. So, I'm so mixed up with cultural behaviors. Good vibes for both, guys!

Seeing it is a sitcom, all the audience would get back is the feedback from eachothers exp in their kitchen feild, while mainly focusing on eachothers dating life, like most sitcomes feature. But it would be so enjoayble to see them poke fun at eachother's craft. Hiyaa, why no cook the fish? So lazy. Japanese Girfriend, oh... better for me.......haha (ahegao face).

      It ain’t just Americans tbh,
I’m British Asian and it’s the same here, and tbh being an immigrant parent isn’t an excuse to mistreat your kids,
sure, it’s understandable if you were a bit absent during your kids childhood because you were working hard to provide for them,
but abusing, and blatantly neglecting them is inexcusable and the kids really have every right to be upset about it
