    The fact that Nigel is able to smile or even crack jokes after being attacked on his own street by a random guy speaks volumes of his inner strength. Also, stuff like these needs to be discussed in the open so that people can stop pretending otherwise. These things do happen and that the bystanders are usually of no help. I am glad he is ok.

    Back in the 1980s, my mother was mugged on her way home, 2 blocks away from our house, there were several witnesses, no one did or said anything. When the mugger finally left my mom started shouting at the people, asking them why none of them did anything, they said, "we thought he was your husband and we didn't want to get involved." Because of that incident my mother became a member of the Ohio Victims of Crime, all of the members, at least back then for a package which included police grade Mace. They also got some training on how to better handle the situation in the future if it were to ever happen again. What they say is to never shout for help, instead shout, "fire," because if you shout for help no one will come, but if you shout, "fire," people are more likely to come to your aid.

    the thing with stepping in is, that you put yourself in danger of being attacked as well. Even if you don't see any weapons, it doesn't mean that the assaulter doesn't have one and won't take it out when thing escalated (a person joining forces with the victim)
    Also: I think most people will be really upset if they hear that someone they know got attacked and nobody intervened, but if they were there, they wouldn't intervene to help a stranger. I feel especially adult men won't get a lot of help..

  • @evangeline6
    @evangeline6 3 года назад +381

    Certain areas of NY people intervene when things like this happen. Other places, they have selective vision and ignore distress. It's horrifying. I remember in Brooklyn Chinatown a man was stabbing someone in the fish store multiple times, and after a few times a worker ran out to push the attacker. These random attacks make us all think, what more should we be doing? Not all of us have the courage of that employee, but there is definitely more to be done than ignore whats going on, i.e. pull a victim to safety, yell at attacker to break his concentration, call for help.

    • @nicolaschenclaudialin7339
      @nicolaschenclaudialin7339 2 года назад +1

      Call for help is the best thing, just trying to intervine without anything to defend but your bare hands is risky and could just make it a suicide mission, and what you did will not help anything at all, but call for help in a place the attacker won't notice you, or you are still fucked up

    • @talentlesscultmember7575
      @talentlesscultmember7575 2 года назад +3

      Its not that people don't care, nor is it that they're ignoring it. It's known as the bystander effect. People simply tend to not know what to do in the situation and assume someone else does, so they may think they're intervention wouldn't help the situation. Hence why you see giant crowds not doing anything when a situation like this occurs. Its not like every single person in a crowd doesn't care. Id like to think I'd intervene if a situation like this happened in front of me but I can't know for sure unless it actually happens.

    So awful to be attacked. It's crazy those two witnesses were just like 'oh well, let's move on'. I'm not involved has been the mantra of society. I understand the whole no shoes in the house thing, as I am Korean. But police have to keep footwear on while on duty for officer safety, even when entering a dwelling for whatever reason. I'm pretty sure that's protocol for agencies everywhere.
    On another note, I'm sorry you had to experience this but I'm glad you're alright. My friends experienced something similar at their business a while ago. Thankfully though, no one was assaulted. I was a witness of a beating and I agreed to testify. I went through the whole witness hearing at the police HQ, and shortly after I learned the case is actually going to court and I'm gonna have to get there to repeat the same stuff over again in person (like what the heck for? The effing police got it on paper already, why are they wasting the court's and my time?), which by the time I forgot the bigger part of because it's been *over a year now since the incident* and the court term is getting constantly postponed because of the pandemic so I still have this effing thing hanging over my head and I AM PRAYING it doesn't get postponed AGAIN and get scheduled on my planned August holidays. Also coincidentally I am very socially anxious and scared the frock out of this kind of public appearances especially in unknown or potentially hostile surroundings. And even though I'm not the one who did anything wrong, I feel as if I was to be facing an execution platoon.
    I honestly regret that at the crime scene I just didn't scoot away or said I was looking the other way and didn't see anything.
    And no, it wasn't racial or hate crime against any group of people and people not only do not step in when it's one of those instances. They don't step in in general and if you happen to be of a different race than them, it doesn't necessarily have to mean that they're being racist.

    The thing about "stepping in", is, here in the U.S., if you step in to help someone who's being attacked, not only could you have assault charges pressed on you, by the attacker, but they could also sue you. It is for situations like these, that the phrase "no good deed goes unpunished" was invented. Given how loopy the justice system is in the U.K., i'm sure it's even worse. This guy just randomly walked up and started punching me before throwing me to the ground and stomping on me. The train halted at 2 stops with people getting on and off while this guy was attacking me. Only about maybe a good 20 seconds after I shouted "why the fuck isn't anyone calling the police?" did I hear someone pull the emergency alarm. The guy picked up a random glass bottle on the ground, tossed it in my direction and ran. I would understand people being too afraid to physically intervene for personal safety and legal reasons, but not even calling for help? They have to have the guy being attacked to tell them to have the decency to do something other than stare. Glad you're OK man, it's crazy how feckless people can be as part of a developed society.
