The whole objective of the games are different depending on the game.
Persona 1: Stopping the monsters coming from another world
Persona 2 Innocent Sin: Solving the mystery of rumors becoming true
Persona 2 Eternal Punishment: Resolving the sins committed in the previous game
Persona 3: Ending a mysterious 25th hour of the day that is harming people
Persona 4: Solving the serial murders in a small town
Persona 5: Reforming the world by stealing the desires of criminals
All of them having different themes and styles and you don’t need to play a previous game to understand a future game (Except for 2IS and 2EP which are one continuous storyline)
33:41 and 42:35 are Persona Q and Persona Q2 which are crossover games of personas 3 & 4 then 3, 4, & 5. The rest are pretty much spin off games or ports when Persona 3 caused the serious to rise drastically in popularity ESPECIALLY Persona 4 having the most spin-offs

Oh, as something to note.... All of the mainline Persona games have been remade once, with new openings included. And Persona 3 has been remade TWICE. Persona 2's story got split into two games originally due to what happens at the end of the first of the two halves of Persona 2. And there's been many side story games made, a number of them being crossovers across space/time.
All the persona games are set in the same universe, but typically years apart. Like Persona 4 is two years after Persona 3 in a different location. So, cameos of past characters from past games run rampant through the franchise.
Of the openings here, the only one you missed is Persona 5: Tactica, a chibi side game that's got a changed gameplay style that's more of an RPG tactics game.

There are lore videos, Persona is actually a spin off series from another series Shin Megami Tensei or Digital Devil Saga. But basics as far as I know is that Supernatural shit is happening in highschools, deals are brokered with things from a world beyond or powers are achieved from within, and some highschool kids get caught up in the supernatural bs and dealing with the hidden world of that struggle as it influences and interacts with their day to days lives in a linear timeline of events in the overworld coupled with a turn based rpg combat game with dating sim aspects to develop social links with other members of the cast to move the plot along or unlock loyalty/empower them.

The person who made this compilation of Persona intros put them in order of their release dates. Honestly 1-5 are the main games but 3 changed the formula for the Persona series and it became the new structure for the Persona games going forward. Shin Megami Tensei is the main series from Atlus. Persona was originally just a spin-off title of the Shin Megami series since it had the same monsters. Funny enough Persona 3 became so popular that Atlus started to make spin-off games like Fighting and Dance Dance Revolution style games afterwards as well as be added in many other games after.
3, 4 and 5 are basically their own series which is added in many games and remakes.

So trying to explain the persona franchise in simple terms:
    - the "JoJo stands" are their personas. Personas are their true self revealed (remember when you mentioned that in Persona 2 Innocent Sin, the guy removing the mask to reveal his true self? That's it!)
    - Each Main numbered game, apart from the first one is based on a theme: 2 is rumors, 3 is life/death (therefore the guns analogy), 4 is truth ans 5 is justice
    - all main numbered games have a colour: from 1 to 5: purple, scarlet, blue, yellow and red (you noticed the red on P5 games, that's on purpose)
    - the Chibi-style and dancing games are spin-offs, don't think too much into them
    - gameplay-wise they're JRPGs, with each main numbered having a different cast of characters (similar to final fantasy). You kill "shadows" by using your personas.
    - the music changes slightly from main numbered to main numbered: for example persona 5 games typically have a jazz feeling to it
That's as simple as I can explain it, and covers most of your questions.

Persona is a game series part of a bigger franchise called Megami Tensei made by Atlus. Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, Devil Summoner, Devil Survivor, etc are part of it. Persona is just a very popular portion of it. These games are Japanese Role-Playing Games with a clear animesque style. Some more than others. Since Persona is a series protagonized by teenagers they have very shonen like openings. Some Megami Tensei series don't have that kind of openings, particularly its main series: Shin Megami Tensei, which has a more mature tone and grey morality themes. Persona was born from Shin Megami Tensei but then it turned into its own legit series with a lot of differences from its Mother. That's why first two (actually three) Persona games are depicted darker and old-stylized, because it's still like other Megami Tensei subseries from that time. But after Persona 3 they took a more lighthearted tone and "social/dating" simulation aspects.

You do not need to play any other Persona, or Megami Tensei game to play a game.

One easy way to tell its their theme colour. Blue for P3, Yellow for P4 and Red for P5. Each having their own "advanced" version and it's spinoff
Spinoff like the Ultimax series which is a fighting game
Dancing all night series which is a dancing game coz all music is so good

OK, this is going to be a very broad strokes summary of what's going on
Persona, outside of spinoffs and one mainline game which is kind of the second half of one before it (Persona 2 has 2 games), is an anthology, meaning you don't need to play one game to understand another, although people from previous games sometimes cameo. The general framing device is this:
Within the deaths of the human psyche, there exists suppressed thoughts, ideals, and traits that are personified with mythological concepts, gods, or pseudo-historical individuals and characters from folklore. Each person (more or less) has one of these for themselves (Again, more or less, it's very fluid and inconsistent). These manifestations are known as shadows, and as one character from p3 puts it... "Shadows are the lower parts of the psyche everyone has... Suppressed human thoughts given physical form. When people are unable to face their darker selves, they break loose, free from all control. But sometimes, humans with special awareness can tame their Shadows... Those are Persona-users." If this happens, a shadow is known as a persona, which are the funky lookin stand like things the characters wield. It is important to note a few things.
    1. To get a persona you don't need to have completely reconciled every part of yourself, just, (Generally, very generally) be exposed to supernatural shit that varies game by game and acknowledge and accept that you have flaws and what they are.
    2. General negative concepts that exist in humanity also have shadows, not just people, there is infect a shadow that represents all of humanity, but spoilers.
    3. The shadows were not established to be the source of personas until the third game, though they do appear in the second. In fact, the first two games offer a different way to get a persona in a Bloody Mary-like children's game, but that was w retconned I guess (Not everything's perfect.)
The general plot of each game goes like this.
    1. After playing the persona game after cleaning up the classroom and getting knocked unconscious, a group of students go to visit their friend in the hospital, who claims to have had the same dreams they had while they were unconscious. Going back, the door to the classmates room becomes a wall, earthquakes happen, and all shit breaks loose and demons appear, with the gang realizing they have personas. What the fuck is going on? No spoilers
    2. After hearing of another popular children's game where you summon a man named Joker who grants a wish, our protagonist and his friend try to stoop a kidnapping by a local gang, but it turns out the gang leader just had a band they wanted the main character to join. When a fight breaks out, the three end up accidently summoning their personas (How does this happen when there didn't seem to be a moment where they got said personas, spoilers!) and have a dream where a man vaguely informs them of their potential. Thinking this may have something to do with that game with the Joker guy game people are playing, they play it and it works. However, turns out if you don't come up with a wish, Joker takes your soul, so the gang members (excluding the gang leader) lose their souls. (Why didn't the main characters lose them if they didn't make a wish, spoilers!) Before leaving, Joker insinuates that the protagonist, his friend, and the gang leader (who is a stranger to the other two as far as they know) did something to him long ago which he intends to get revenge for, when the three have no memory of anything like that, a surprised Joker says he will keep sending demons until they remember their mistake. Soon after, the gang learns that every rumor around town is coming true. So, with their powers they barely understand, and a thing they're supposed to remember about Joker that seems to be related, the gang tries to figure out what's going on.
    2. Yes, that's another two, the second game has a second part where you try to fix mistakes made in the story of the first.
    3. After moving to a new town, a young teen is recruited into a secret operation to destroy a secret 25th hour of the day that only people who have personas or have the potential to get one can experience that has shadows that kill bystanders and turns their school into a seemingly infinite tower/shadow nest. This operation is under the guise of a school club. In this game, you summon your persona by putting an evoker (looks like a gun, not a gun, no bullets) to your head and pulling the trigger to signify your acceptance that one day you will die, leading a persona to appear out of adrenaline. Crazy shit ensues.
    4. Main character goes to a new school in a town that is soon rocked by a series of murders that him and his friends learn is connected to a literal physical world within tv screens if you tune into a secret channel only available at midnight (you can jump into them if you have a personas or the potential for one.) This world also has shadows as well as shadow versions of yourself you have to directly accept to get a persona. Since the police are clueless, our ragtag group of misfits tries to solve this themselves.
    5. After being unjustly put on probation in a new town for stopping a would-be sexual assault, the ostracized protagonist makes friends with other outcasts who end up with a mysterious app on their phones that brings them to twisted versions of a location in real life that is infested with shadows and ruled by an evil person they met in real life. After awakening to their personas and meeting a mysterious, friendly amnesiac cat creature in one of these worlds who also has a persona, they learn they can get these evil people who harbor these worlds within them by defeating the shadow selves of said people and dub themselves the phantom thieves who steal the corrupt desires of evil adults.
These are all just the mainline games and, as hard as it is to believe, is a very rough, simplified summary.
    It's great. I love persona.

Explanation for the guns In P3's intro. Those are called Evokers, and they are gun-shaped tools the main characters use to summon their Persona. By pointing the gun to their heads and pulling the trigger the Persona (aka the "Stand") is summoned. The gun isn't real btw. Persona 4 had cards that the MCs broke when summoning their Personas. Persona 5 had the MCs take off their masks. The long-nosed guy, Igor isn't the villain. More of a side character that helps the protagonist, aka the Wild Cards
Persona 3: The MCs are trying to save the world from Death itself
Persona 4: They're trying to solve a murder mystery. With strange cases of deaths where people appear hanging from a tower
Persona 5: Reforming society and making evil adults change their ways, and confess their crimes
And YES the characters in P5 are thieves going into the minds of said adults to a place known as a Palace. In this Palace, they steal the person's heart aka their treasure which forces the person to change their ways. Like the first "villain" of P5, you steal his heart to make him confess his crimes. To confess that he's been abusing and harassing students as a teacher. Expelling ANYONE who dares to step up to him.

In persona, they follow the same formula for each game, or atleast from persona 3 onwards; the main protagonist is a transfer student that through a series of events, finds themselves in a tight nit group that end up travelling back and forth from our world to another; the world they travel two, it’s rules and how they get there are all different.
In P3, they stay up late at night where monsters appear and gateways open. In P4, they enter a world through a TV. In P5, they use a phone navigation app to enter a cognitive world created by a corrupt individual.
In each game, they’re goals are different as to why they enter; in P4, they seek to solve a murder mystery, in which the victim who will be targeted is shown on a mysterious channel at midnight, and in P5, they enter a Cognitive realm called a ‘Palace’ ruled by the cognitive or ‘Shadow’ variant of an individual with a corrupt desire, with the intention to steal that desire in order to change theyre hearts and atone for any sins they have committed.
And of course, the methods behind each person summoning they’re ‘Persona’ is different too. To lay the ground work; the appearance and powers of one’s persona are dictated by theyre personality, wants, the decisions they make and they’re memories/ the life they lived. Also, all personas are references in both name and design to mythologies, stories and real people, and each persona is sorted into the ‘arcana’s’ , identical to the ones shown in tarot cards; for example, all main protagonists Persona’s are of the fool arcana.
As for summoning methods; P3, you pull a sewer slide, P4, you simply summon the tarot card your persona belong to and destroy it, and P5, you remove a mask that becomes a persona.
Also, like stands, persona can evolve as a person grows, which is a prominent feature in every game, being referred to as an awakening. Fun fact; Izanagi-No-Okami, the awakened form of the P4 protagonist’s persona, Izanagi, is the only persona in the ‘World’ arcana.

Basically the persona saga is a sub saga of shin megami tensei, technically if it is like a lost son of jojos, each main game has its characteristic color, I will mention them in order from the first to thr fifth Purple, orange, blue, yellow and red, the persona saga has spin offs from the third game to the fifth, 3 has dancing in the moonlight, 4 has arena, arena ultimax and dancing all night and 5 has strikers, dancing in starlight, and the most recent tactica, other spinoff of the general Saga are the Q, there are 2 of those games and they are crossovers of the characters from the main games, Q is a crossover between 3 and 4, and Q2 is between 3, 4 and 5, the games that begin with Dancing are rhythm games, arena and arena ultimax are fighting games, strikers is a beat em all and Q are dungeon crawlers without rouguelike mechanics, tactica its name says it the first 2 personas are more like shin megami tensei but decaff and from third to fifth They moved quite far from a shin megami tensei fortunately because that saga is a very hardcore rpg for those of us who currently play persona

From my understanding for playing person 3,4 and 5. persona 3 fes, persona 4 golden and persona 5 royal are kinda like slight remasters with story extensions 3,4 and 5 all take place in the same universe but different cities and schools, not sure about 1 and 2 though considering the only recognition of them in nearly 20 years was a 25th anniversary art piece teasing the 6th games colour scheme.
Persona 3,4, and 5 dancing are a just dance / rhythm game spin off, persona Q 1 and 2 are a chibi spin off where the protagonists of 3, 4 and 5 meet up in some mashed up universe (I think, never played them)
Persona 4 arena and ultimax are basically tekken/streetfighter/mortal kombat but with persona 3 and 4 characters.
The persona 1 intro from 2009 is a psp remaster port same with the persona 2 innocent sin and eternal punishment intros from 2012.

Persona 5 Royal was my first and I fell in love, got my platinum trophy on that and Persona 4 Golden, currently working on my platinum for Persona 3 Reload. If you like anime and turn based JRPGs, then these games are peak! Also each one is basically its own world and story so you can jump in almost anywhere and not have to worry about the events of other games, except for the spinoffs. Id recommend 4 or 5 as a good starting point.

Persona has a Gimmick where it releases a standard release of a game Persona 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc, and then like a year or 2 later they release a new full release of the game with a ton more features. Persona 3 FEStival,, Persona 4 Golden, Persona 5 Royal.
then you have Portable versions of games like Persona 3 Portable, Persona 2 Innocent Sin/Eternal Punishment.
then you have the Rhythm games in the form of Dancing All/Moon/Star Night.
Persona 4 got 2 Fighting Games. Persona 4 Arena and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.
theres the Persona Q spinoff games which are fanservice games where you see the p3 and p4, (and p5 characters in PQ2) casts interact with each other
Then you have the persona 5 spinoff games like Strikers and Tactica
Lastly Persona 3 Reloaded is a Remake of 3

You were indeed a little correct with the Persona 5 gang being thieves heroically 'stealing' for the greater good though 1) what they steal are parts of a person's mind to make them feel awful over all the evil shit they ever did, and 2) each of the Persona games' numbers indicates a totally separate story so for example: all Persona 5 games are about the Phantom Theives aka kids who have been mistreated by various authority figures who rebel against a corrupt society, while all Persona 4 games follow the Investigation Team who are quirky kids trying to resolve mysteries (starting with the murders happening in their small town of Inaba).
Persona games in general though always have Persona (aka those stand like things) being summonable monsters based on the main character's psyches/minds, enemies called Shadows (kinda the reverse? Persona 4 is the first game that truly clarifies what Shadows are though if you know any Jungian psychology it's not hard to work out), and the long nosed man called Igor, who despite his incredibly sinister looks is generally the best ally you and the main characters have against the many super natural forces acting against you, helping you craft more and more powerful Persona and allowing you to bond with/get the help of one of his many blue wearing attendants.
Other stuff varies from game to game but aside from the Persona Dancing game spinoffs you can generally assume that all Persona games are JRPGs that deal with mature themes (for example P3 deals with a lot of mortality/the inevitiblity of death stuff, P4 is a murder mystery with 'small town awfulness' and 'diverse group of teens dealing with sexuality and stuff', and P5's corrupt authorities range from 'mere' abusive mentors to literal rapist teachers and politicians so it can get pretty wild), there will be supernatural stuff that is in some way connected to some key part of humanity's collective unconsciousness, and very likely a huge chunk of the plot is social commentary on Japan but may be applicable to other countries as well (case in point: P5's whole 'evil authorities abusing those without power' is pretty universal but some pretty major plot points about what certain characters go through are fairly Japan specific).
    As for spinoff games...
Persona Q and Persona Q2 are crossover games between P3+P4 and P3+P4+P5 respectively (plot involves timey wimey stuff and memory erasure in both cases to prevent continuty errors).
Persona 4 Arena and Persona 4 Arena Ultimax are fighting game sequels of Persona 4 taking place roughly a year after P4 takes place, where the P4 cast officially meet the P3 cast for real this time, oh and there's robots with incredibly tragic backstories.
Persona 4 Dancing All Night is a dancing game sequel of P4 where the cast try to have a fun time dancing but oops! They aren't allowed to ever meet up without crazy stuff happening (and this time no fighting is allowed XD)
Persona 5 Scramble/Strikers is a Warriors style sequel of Persona 5 that takes place during the summer holidays a year after P5 where the Phantom Thieves are being hassled by the cops due to someone else seemingly using their methods (which would be impossible) and cope by going on a road trip around Japan to sort things out (and also to visit all the fancy tourist spots and try out yummy food XDDD).
Persona 5 Tactica (has an opening that wasn't on this list/video for some reason???) is a grid strategy game sequel to P5 that is 'Phantom Thieves not too long after the end of P5's main storyline get isekai'd and try to go back home, aided by the leader of the local rebel army and a regular world politician who also got sucked in here somehow'.
And finally the other two dancing games which have no plot and most just exist for fanservice.
Every other game number+name is a remake, so like P3's most recent remake is Persona 3 Reload, P4's is Persona 4 Golden, and P5's is Persona 5 Royal.
Oh! Except Persona 2 Innocent Sin and Persona 2 Eternal Punishment: Innocent Sin is the first game while Eternal Punishment is a sequel following a slightly different cast though IS's cast are still involved (haven't yet played either of them myself but heard very good things about both).
Anyway highly recommend all the Persona games, happy to ramble about each individual game if you want more info on how they feel play/story wise (can keep it spoiler free or not), and need to state that the entire OSTs of pretty much all the games tend to be absolute fire so even if you're not interested in playing I HIGHLY recommend giving the OSTs a listen

90% of these are spinoffs or remakes of the games. That's why a lot doesn't make sense when watching them consecutively, for example Persona 4 Ultimax is a fighting game spinoff like Tekken, while all the ones with Dancing in the title are all rhythm dancing games lol. The main games themselves always have themes of the duality of our outward selves that we show off to the world and our inner selves that we keep hidden. The spin-offs can be goofy but the main games handle serious stuff like facing your own mortality or accepting the horrible parts of yourself as still being part of you.

Every Persona game has a different theme, and objective. Persona 3's theme is death and accepting that you have one life to live and to make the best of it. Persona 4's theme is truth and accepting yourself, flaws and all. Persona 5's theme is rebellion against society and rotten adults who abuse their power, and also Desires and how they become so distorted that they corrupt people.
Every game since Persona 3 has a lot of spinoff games, like the dancing games, which essentially take place in a dream, or the P4 Arena games, which take place after the events of both Persona 3 and Persona 4.
