Homophobes will literally consume underage femboy hentai minutes before tweeting about how Pride month is a threat to children. I literally know someone like this
A lot of Western anime fans coast on the fact that they don't know about Japanese cultural and political discourses to pretend that it simply doesn't exist. They convince themselves that only "woke, Western media" comments on society. The fact that these are often the loudest voices in anime communities is frustrating to no end
You know that the distinction between real and reel life? When most sane people talk about " Woke", mainly in terms of media, they are not talking about Girl power or Sexual acceptance, but the act of looking down at the intelligence of the audience, to be overly preachy ( while not having the capability to write a compelling story), to change or weaken previously widely loved characters , just to make their self inserts appear stronger ( without any logical character based insights,as to Why?). You will understand when you actually try to understand why people find Woke Media to be problematic, only when you start to actually listen to the opinions of various people from different walks of life, instead of just the vocal minority. Don't dismiss someone's feelings,if you actually want others to accept your own.
@@BAlex2209 I'll take criticisms of "woke" media seriously when people stop calling everything woke derisively. The Barbie movie is Woke, but also so is the Mario movie. X-Men '97 is Woke. Fairly Odd Parents failed because it went Woke. The Simpsons is Woke. Fraking Law & Order is Woke. Everything is Woke.
@@khalifazizb6121 You know exactly why people called them woke, don't pretend otherwise! They changed the vibe of the show to essentially preach about their personal ideology, while simultaneously mocking their fans ( because the fans wanted a better written story). If you openly disregard other people 's criticisms, why should they respect your story.

The Japanese perspective on gender is interesting to see in comparison to American ideals. I was recently watching Kaiba and this portrayal of intense sexuality and heterosexuality compared to the main character being stuck in a women’s body was super interesting.
Bruh. I've seen fans convincing that Kaiba is so GAY for his arch nemesis Pharaoh Atem (AKA Yami Yugi), which is obviously not and there are people out there shipping him with his iconic ace monster Blue Eyes White Dragon (Blueshipping). I honestly can't believe that the creator decided to make a dragon waifu for Kaiba and I wish this wasn't real. But if I were to have an opinion on Kaiba's sexuality, I would think that he's realistically either aroace or demisexual, cause we've never seen him have any interest in anyone, especially women. And as for the main character being stuck in a woman's body situation, I think a lot of Yugioh characters, especially male characters, tend to look highly androgynous and flamboyant, which makes us question either our sexuality or gender identity. In fact, most fans would gender bend male characters to sexualise them as part of a male fantasy, but what if there was a female MC in Yugioh? Perhaps it would be a female counterpart of Yugi.

Anime has been ahead of the West in these topics for a while now. There are a ton of old anime with gay characters and there's a lot of new anime with gay characters to! Not to mention, femboys. Yeah I know they are not trans, but I still find femboys neat.
I find it so funny when people say that "anime is going woke" when jojo exists. Jojo may not be perfect in first parts when it comes to representation, but it was litteraly ahead of its time when it comes to reconstriction of masculinity, male fashion and gender roles. Also Araki was willing to have female mc even in part 5 and and featired openly gay couples in part 5
JoJo also had a trans male background character in part 6 (was around for one page, but he was pretty much drawn as a regular dude, but sadly misgendered by the guards) and I find Anasui's gender identity pretty interesting as well (how he was introduced as a woman in the manga, but then later on Araki started to draw him as an androgynous man). I really appreciate JoJo as a series, because it has helped me with exploring my own self expression and masculinity as a trans man.
Jojo is such a great example since it has so many things people would call woke nowadays and it has been around for a long while. It has feminine men, women in stereotypical male roles, gay people, trans and nonbinary characters
@@kahvikuppi8410Anasui is, from what I recall, a forced change by publishers, who thought the main cast shouldn't be so exclusively female, or something along those lines. Deconstruction is only good when there is a plan for construction afterwords. I like manga, I like sleeping with other guys but the LGBT community has done a lot of deconstruction in my lifetime and not a whole lot of construction. I've heard a lot of arguments inspired by hatred, seen more then one person use their sexuality to bully someone, seen a lot of people in the community ignore honest criticism from the outside (shout out to the "we're coming for your children" song), seen people ostracized for pointing out the problems the community currently have (shout out to the "friendly fire will not be tolerated" crowd), not really a fan of yaoi and shonen ai manga because it feels very much like women just fetisizing us. Basically I don't like how a lot of anime and manga put us on a pedistol, they forget that everyones shit stinks and it feels like some people are huffing their own farts. Also if you don't give characters flaws they stop feeling human.
Anime has always had at least one character thats a guy who looks feminine or cross dressess, or simply a trans character, but we refer to them as femboys nowadays And theres also plethora of characters who are gay or gay coded in anime, and that always made me think that japan was more accepting of gender themes and sexuality
Nah, this only happened because Americans are incapable of separating gender nonconforming characters and trans people. Characters that are explicitly stated to be crossdressing boys in Japanese are turned trans in the west. It's quite annoying.
Straight relationships can be forced and handled poorly also. I mean I have like a list of media in which they introduce a straight relationship just because… and I don’t see many people complaining about it.
@anacastrodavila2689 people complain about random, poorly done, and forced relationships in media all the time. The difference is that when it's straight, it's not seen as forced political messaging, it's simply poor writing, so it doesnt blow up as much.
@Free_Palestine_75 That's because of the sour taste left in people's mouths from Disney and games affected by dei consultants like sweet baby. The creators of those outright mock and belittle the fanbase while destroying the fabric of the shows they love, making genuinely garbage films, admit to wanting to forcefully change the way people think, openly talking about how they use scare tactics to force companies to include dei in their media (if you want a specific example of this the CEO of sweet baby inc said it herself), and openly talk about how much they hate white males, straight people, etc. That is just scratching the surface. So, now, anytime it's present, people just assume it's another one of those - like what happened with furiousa thanks to the marketing. People assumed it was just some girl boss "I dont need no man" movie and didn't bother to watch it even though it wasn't and was actually a good movie (or so I heard. I didn't watch it simply because Im not interested in the character). This wasn't always the case. Anecdotal example: when the first last of us came out, I did not bat an eye when Ellie was revealed as a lesbian and I couldn't care less. When the kiss scene happened I didnt react at all but, if that were to have come out today (especially given the current state of naughty dog), I would have assumed it was just for a checkbox and likely wouldn't have even tried the dlc because I dont want to support people who again, bash their fanbase and are using an ip as an means to instill their agendas into my ahead and try to force me to share their views (and reiterating this again, people working on these movies and games openly say they do this. I am not pulling it out of my ass). Tl:dr far too many bad apples leave people with a negative bias and prejudice when inclusivity pops up in modern-day media. Edit: I ended up going on a rant and forgot what my original comment said. So, back to what the original comment was specifically saying, yeah you're right about it not being complained about to the same extent. That was the point. One is just bad writing, while one also mixes in politics, which is a super heated topic, gets trending a lot easier, and broadens the conversation surrounding the controversy.
@Free_Palestine_75 Yeah, that is their point. When a straight relationship is done bad people chalk it up to being bad writing, but when there's a queer well written or badly written there is almost always backlash from conservative fans
Japan is such a conservative country, so trying to erase the strong progresive work found in manga and anime that so many authors have done be it for them being queer or being simpatetic to the queer experience is just criminal. It literaly refuses to recognize the legit atempts to break out of the excesive conservativism of the japanise society, some of which are severily hurting the country and its minorities to this day.

Queerness in media has always been there and like any other cultures, we have significantly contributed to shape arts to what they are today. Queerness is much more than just relationships, its people, its art, its social issues, it's a culture. To deny any other aspects of that and water it down to just romance is insulting, and i absolutely love that people are realising how engraved queerness is in media. Because media is made by people, diverse people of different backgrounds and experiences, yet unified by experiences and issues and feelings and expression.
It's quite odd that for some reason (in my experience) I have met more gay supporting people in Japan than in a non conservative like the USA and India (I am Taiwanese).
And that will even transferred to videogames. Yoko Taro is probably the first to add an intersex character to a videogame, when in 2010 he made Kainé as co-protagonist of NieR Replicat, and her character is so good and well written, because at first you believe she dresses like that for fanservice, when in reality she's trying to highlight her feminity due to the bullying she received when young for being partially a male.
It is worthy of noting that while the Takarazuka Revue on the surface seems like a LGBTQ+ wonder of the early 1900s, it actually is not as great as it seems. It was run by men and the actresses were expected to live a certain way and the goal was to make "good wives". I am greatly oversimplifying everything here, but thankfully the current sociopolitical landscape of the world is leading to it being a little more like the yuri utopia you would think it is 😂

I think most fans of Takarazuka Revue are straight and don’t really want to see a lesbian relationship on stage. It seems like some fangirls want certain actresses to have good chemistry. If you were to tell those fangirls their favorite actresses were lesbians, they’d say that wasn’t the case. The lesbian undertones are just a result of the whole troupe being female.
This is quite literally a "its okay when Japan does it" moment. There is a huge difference between how Americans try and preach about gender which has soured many people's views on things and how Japan does it. People do not like being preached to or talked down to and Americans of all kinds try to brute force their views onto others which causes the issue. Thats the issue.
Steven Universe was heavily influenced/inspired by Revolutionary Girl Utena. Rebecca Sugar was a huge fan of the anime when she was young since it helped her recognize and feel comfortable with her bisexuality. This was during the 90s when LGBT was still largely looked down and made fun of in the media.
I know right, it’s like when In the original sailor moon, sailor Neptune and Uranus are portrayed as lovers but because of homophobia in the west, the English version changed them to cousins.
What really confuses me, that as old as anime exist it always showed signs of lgbtq+, but whenever its talked about, its 'hated' between parents and elder people??? But those mangakas are also elder people, so really confused whats the majority opinion of lgbtq in japan
Queer and progressive people tend to have more talent in the arts. That's why the majority of conservatives (especially pundits) have a history of failing in arts. That's why _mangakas_ made progressive art but _executives_ cut it up and made it "traditional".
That's because not all elderly people were like homophobic, but I can't comment on the lgbtq opinion in Japan, it is probably best for u to form ur opinions on ur own.
I watched Ouran highschool host club in Japanese and English, and while the english dub using language that are up to today's standards in the west, it definitely pushed the boundaries in the west for 2006.
It's also worth noting that they still do these things differently from western media, or at least modern western media. A queer character can still have an identity outside their queerness, and even works that go really heavy on queer or gender-related themes still aren't obnoxiously preaching to you.
Interesting that they've been playing with gender and sexuality for decades but they refuse to allow two male characters to have any romantic interactions. *cough* Yuri on Ice *cough*

i want people to understand that bigots have always existed and the resent trends are an inorganic push to make these themes the center of media but many of the heavily pushed champions are FAILURES in some regard. like Witch from Mercury was, even for a cynical person at least a decent anime but sol many western movies and TV shows fall on their face at first because they were just bad but now they've created the added fact of people shying away due to new sht sharing similar themes, background motives, or even just staff as previous failures. anime hasnt created this problem for itself (yet) and so even if an anime was inorganically pushing a theme most people wouldnt really notice until someone properly sussed it out and even then the product still has a decent chance of being good
I'm not homphobic or anything, but with all your shorts I've seen recently being about gender and sexuallity, I feel like an agenda is being pushed here. But maybe it's just me
Ranma 1/2 is another interesting manga from 1987 that could be brought into this discussion. Among many others I'm sure. That one simple came to mind because it was one of our prime focuses in a college course I took during a part of the syllabus where we covered the exploration of gender and sexuality in anime and manga, especially early anime and manga.
I think people take issue with themes of gender and sexuality in manga and anime because of modern political attitudes.

I find it so funny when people say that "anime is going woke" when jojo exists. Also Araki was willing to have female mc even in part 5 and and featired openly gay couples in part 5
"wokeee!!!" And it's two men kissingor 💀

@anacastrodavila2689 people complain about random, poorly done, and forced relationships in media all the time. The difference is that when it's straight, it's not seen as forced political messaging, it's simply poor writing, so it doesnt blow up as much.
@@tomaliothetomato439Not to the extent of lgbtq+ though, people complain about them existing being forced

Which makes it incredibly weird how japan is still very conservative and very gender-role-y stereotype-y and quite homophobic

It was run by men and the actresses were expected to live a certain way and the goal was to make "good wives". I am greatly oversimplifying everything here, but thankfully the current sociopolitical landscape of the world is leading to it being a little more like the yuri utopia you would think it is 😂
I agree with you 100%
I agree that If you don't change, you will suffer😂😂😂
@@simonnewchannel1146 yea, i agree, if your trans, you should accept you now ,and if you keep pushing peoples views that you are the gender you were before on you, you will only suffer. be yourself.
The Creator of “The Roses of Versailles “ which came out in 1972, also created “Claudine” in 1978 about a trans man

Thank you for mentioning Rose of Versailles. ❤❤ one of my favorite manga/animes of all time
Steven Universe was heavily influenced/inspired by Revolutionary Girl Utena.
Because the Elders and the Adults who hate Homosexuality are Raised right
You however may be not raised properly😂😂😂
Queer and progressive people tend to have more talent in the arts. That's why the majority of conservatives (especially pundits) have a history of failing in arts.
That's why _mangakas_ made progressive art but _executives_ cut it up and made it "traditional".
That's because not all elderly people were like homophobic, but I can't comment on the lgbtq opinion in Japan, it is probably best for u to form ur opinions on ur own.

I know you used a soundtrack from a jrpg from my childhood for this, but I can't figure out which one. It just scratches that itch.
That’s very true
Dudes don't read Shoujo
When I found out about seiya kou, I felt so seen 🥺
Interesting that they've been playing with gender and sexuality for decades but they refuse to allow two male characters to have any romantic interactions. *cough* Yuri on Ice *cough*
Theres a difference between having these themes in a story and creating a story that is solely to push an agenda at the cost of the quality of the story. Thats why I have never had a problem with that kind of thing in anime but hate it in current marvel/disney.
What agenda?
@@UwUImShio woke, left-leaning, liberal, etc political views. Which is consistently confirmed by the staff that work on these things, especially when it comes to disney who outrate berates their fans who have any criticism of the new movies - even if it's not related to their dei nonsense.
@@tomaliothetomato439 an agenda by definition is a plan or goal that guides someone's behavior and that is often kept secret, so what's the goal?
@@tomaliothetomato439 there are plenty of movies that push conservative values, so what's wrong with others challenging them? I don't get it

Thank you for educating people!
There is an anime from the 1980's featuring a well written transgender protagonist called "Stop hibari-kun!!". anyone that says that anime and lgbtq themes dont go together is spwaking out of their ass.
I'm fine with gay and lesbian characters as long as it doesn't interfere with their personality or motivation (eg. Kita from Bocchi the Rock kind of). I'm stuck on the trans thing but I don't think that matters as long as I ignore it if I don't like it. Everyone just has to debate everything and it's annoying af.
You are so real for that. Ignoring it as opposed to spreading negative hate about it is just waay better
Honestly, I respect the hell out of you for that

i want people to understand that bigots have always existed and the resent trends are an inorganic push to make these themes the center of media but many of the heavily pushed champions are FAILURES in some regard. like Witch from Mercury was, even for a cynical person at least a decent anime but sol many western movies and TV shows fall on their face at first because they were just bad but now they've created the added fact of people shying away due to new sht sharing similar themes, background motives, or even just staff as previous failures. anime hasnt created this problem for itself (yet) and so even if an anime was inorganically pushing a theme most people wouldnt really notice until someone properly sussed it out and even then the product still has a decent chance of being good
Not just manga, but life itself
Yeah, true. Like, even non-binary people have existed for millenia
The only thing I remember from Astro Boy was in chapter 74 he made out so hard they destroyed a city.
Yeah Japanese people are progressive lol
That is why LGBTQ Is Bs😂😂😂
I'm not homphobic or anything, but with all your shorts I've seen recently being about gender and sexuallity, I feel like an agenda is being pushed here. But maybe it's just me
yeah its just you tbh. there is no agenda just facts
It never ends well when someone starts with “I’m not homophobic or anything..”

It can be viewed that politics have been forcefully injected into stories and any criticism is labelled as bigotry. I don't watch LBGT anime. And manga as it's not my thing, but on the whole, I haven't heard any issues with them.
Ugh

Ugh, these people won't be In Paradise where Lord our God told nothing but the Truth😊😊😊
I would definitely love to add that could the politics not have been injected into being lgbt rather than the media. Being apart of the lgbt community shouldn’t have to be a political issue as being straight or not being transgender are socially acceptable! I wholeheartedly believe that modern politics has made a mountain out of a molehill when it comes to lgbt people. It sounds beyond exhausting to have your whole life turned into the topic of a political discussion! That being said I do think criticism should be cast upon the media we chose to consume while not hurting communities in the process. Change is great and the only way people are able to progress is by talking about the things they wish to be changed.
Sorry for such a long jumbled reply I tried my best to make it as coherent as possible but I’m quite tired haha!

@@simonnewchannel1146 Ok. Thank you for you explanation. It's harder to understand another person's viewpoint when they don't take the time to convey their opinion.
Meanwhile, when it comes to depicting straight relationships and women agency they're often crappy at best...shonen especially...
so true
Authors love their protagonists too much to give other characters agency.
@@echiko4932 Not really: other male secondary characters do have their own arc, albeit limited (think of Gokudera in Reborn or Shikamaru in Naruto Shippuden...and there are many, many other examples). But when it comes to females. they're usually either the "nurse" (Winry in FMA) or the "mom" type or, worse still, they have some kind of awareness of how useless they are but, instead of pushing against their limits like male characters are made to do, they just assume they can't do anything but cook or put themselves in risky situations so that they will FINALLY prove they too can do something of value...but, invariably, end up stuck and need the male hero to save the day (yes, Sakura, you're a prime example...). Put a male character in the very same powerless situation and, lo and behold, they WILL figure out something... sometimes it won't even make sense, it'll be the talk no jutsu or the will-unlocks-new-previously-unthought-of-ability no jutsu but they will come up on top...
Agree. I read Grappler Baki right now, and while I do enjoy the manga for its stupidity and entertainment value, it's really unfortunate to see how female characters either exist as motivation for male characters or as power ups. They are not given an opportunity to seriously fight like male characters or grow beyond their limits. Not to mention the three or four sexual assaults that happened, that are just glossed over.
@@Marrianno I really enjoyed Katekyo Hitman Reborn a few years ago...mainly because of the almost complete lack of female characters on screen (Lal Mirch is passable). Except for...Chrome. Everyone around me tried to tell me she was just a medium for Mokuro, that it's justified and all. Until I came up with a saying: "Where Chrome is, a squid will be" ("Dove c'è Chrome c'è una piovra" in Italian). I was laughed at and dismissed as over exaggerating... until my boyfriend rewatched the whole thing and eventually came to me to apologize...because turns up I'm right.
And don't let me started on some other oversexualized crap like Code Geass or even (God help us) Ano Hana...
conversation of gender & sexuality have been a part of all art since forever... a certain specific culture just enjoyed burning those arts & punishing the artists.. (a tactic still used today in numerous countries).

meh most of the times it depends on how its done. if it an important part of the story, cool i guess, but if its just a random ahh character that is just gay for no reason whatsoever no thanks you
Why do people need a reason to be gay? People are just gay, it's something they're born as, gay people exist. Do straight characters have to have a reason to be straight? Would you bat an eye if a random side character was straight "for no reason"? Why is there a double standard
same here, it's great when the characters feel more organic in their development instead of being a checkbox mark.
why they're need a reason
@@Free_Palestine_75 idk i guess its because back in the day if a character was gay for no reason it wasnt a marketing strategy, now if a character is gay (and it doesnt have to do anything with the plot) its probably a marketing strategy. not saying this happens every time, but...
@aquaenjoyer1612 Characters aren't gay for a reason. They're gay because some people are gay... Some characters are straight but it has nothing to do with the plot. It's not marketing, it's normal, you just see gay people as different
