Animated deaf characters actually signing is super rare cause all that extra movement can be hard to animate, so its super heart warming to see them actually make the effort!
The Dragon Prince on Netflix has a deaf character that signs all the time. I'm just a bit sad they don't subtitle what she signs when there's no other character relating what she's signing
@@evelyne1307 Considering they can’t be assed to do much other than “speaks foreign language” or “speaks Spanish” in a lot of cases I’m not surprised that they won’t bother for ASL. On the bright side I feel like it’s usually fairly easy to pick up what’s happening based on context clues in the show
as a manga artist, it’s probably harder to make the sign make sense within a panel without making it look repetitive and forced. this jsut goes for comic and manga! but it’s significantly easier to draw in animation! most anime’s are based off mangas, so that’s why!
Have you looked into A Silent Voice? It's a sad story but also a hopeful story with deafness being the main story component. A boy who bullies a deaf girl and goes searching for her to apologize.
I personally didn't like it much and felt it wasn't giving the deaf character enough story. But hey! It's definitely good that there is more representation popping up!
A Silent Voice is very good and I highly recommend the manga too. It is hard to watch at times because while not extremely violent, the bullying scenes in the beginning are pretty damn brutal. There's also a character with suicidal ideations. But despite all this, it is a good story about forgiveness, understanding, and growing from your mistakes.
I instantly fell in love with "A Sign of Affection"!!! Itsuomi (the guy in the clip) is such a sweetie, Yuki (the girl) is the cutest romance protagonist I've ever encountered, and the animation/ art style is absolutely gorgeous. Not to mention a character in it gives advice to Yuki's hearing friends about accommodations they can/should make for her that ive actually heard from deaf people. I can't. Instant 10/10 and went on my favorites list around episode 4
The original manga has a deaf JSL advisor to help ensure authenticity too! A Sign of Affection is really sweet. I'm watching it with a friend currently. I love that the sound design clearly changes for when the show is focused on Yuki (the deaf protagonist) versus when its focused on hearing characters. There's also a lot of small details that make Yuki's experiences more authentic. Like how her hearing aids are drawn and used, how she has a hearing friend that helps her take notes in college (there's no interpretor avaiable which is common), and the whiteboard kept by the front door at home to quickly comminicate with her mom. I really hope its popularity helps increase the understanding of deafness in the general population. I also hope it leads to more series that feature disabled main characters who are treated with such respect by the authors.

I had my first deaf patient at the hospital. Videos like this really helped me practice my understanding of ASL so thank you! I still needed an interpreter for medical conversations for clarity but I was able to have side conversations about school and life! I was happy to be able to practice my sign n he was happy someone on the floor could just chat with him!!
This is quite literally the best romance anime I’ve seen. The characters actually resolve conflict within like two episodes and are mature. The romance progresses at a snails pace, so it’s actually interesting. I love this anime!!!
Yes! The author if the story has a deaf friend, and she helped her to make the signs and the language as accurate as possible! the research and attetion on details is amazing!
didn’t have to see more than the thumbnail this is one of my favorite animes and i watched every episode as they came out :’3 im not usually a romance genre viewer but it’s so sweet and it makes me so happy ive already rewatched it twice edit to add: the english voices just now threw me off but i’m glad they got a dub too :3
when i heard that a sign of affection was getting an anime adaptation i just about lost. my. MIND!!! Itsuomi and Yuki's love story is so so precious. He's so good to her, his desire to learn how to communicate with others makes him go out of his way to learn sign language just to communicate with her, he learns of Yuki's struggles and wants to become her bridge to experiencing the world. Ugh i love them so muuuuch, one of my if not THE top favorite manga
So, I watched it, but it reminded me of some of your content that points out when you can clearly tell that it's written by a hearing person. There are a lot of instances of "She has lip reading super powers" and some situations feel like a hearing person thought of them because they feel unrealistic. BUT I will say it does do a lot to show how different she feels and how inexperienced she is in a lot of things. I say: It's definitely recommend but take it with a grain of salt.
True, but as someone else mentioned and she herself in the show as well i think, is that Japanese is easier to lip read, as the sounds they make are easier (i dont know the technical term for it)
I've been wanting to read the manga for years, but never got around to it, then they released the anime and I loved it! Such a cool show, and was so much fun learning JSL along side the characters haha
A kdrama entitled Twinkling Watermelon is sooo good too!!! It's Korean sign language involve there. That drama made me want to learn sign language before I got to meet your channel.
The way she looks so happy he wants to learn is so sweet. Even though it is something we should all do it still feels really good when someone makes an effort to accommodate you. ❤
The whole anime is just so sweet. And honestly it helped me learn a lot about sign and helped me gain some perspective on what the world might be like for the deaf and the challenges they face on a daily. Learning a lot from this channel too. Thanks for posting! Looking forward to more content from you. Keep it up!
been following this series since the manga 🥹 i heard that the author talks to her deaf friend a lot in order to more accurately portray the main character! i love this series sm aaaa
That anime is absolutely amazing. The animation is gorgeous, the romance is super sweet, the relationship between them is absolute GOALS. One of the things I love about it is that they show that her mom doesn’t even know sign, even in her own home she has to write to be able to communicate with her own mom. But then these two meet and what does he do? Ask her to teach him sign because he doesn’t expect her to accommodate to him, he wants to be part of her world. Amazing.
I have been an anime lover for years, but A Sign Of Affection has easily made it into my top 5 romance animes❤ This anime also made me wanna learn sign language. The ML is such a green flag!!!!

Thank you so much for giving this anime the attention it deserves. This is a very wholesome romance anime, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys anime or has a penchant for romance in general. As a hearing person, I find it truly remarkable how the creators have crafted this story, bringing such depth and sensitivity to the portrayal of its characters. The animation quality is top-notch, adding a visually stunning element that complements the heartwarming narrative beautifully. It's a delightful experience that resonates on many levels, making it a must-watch for fans of the genre.

The biggest hurdle is making sure the gesture is comprehensible. You can draw the action but without depth it’s hard to make it clear.
