- Episode #222 : Season 8 : The Hawaiian Adventures
Hello Friends,
This week takes us into Oahu's interior to do the 14.7 mile long hike up to the famous "Stairway to Heaven" / Haiku Stairs. We go up the legal way taking the Moanalua Valley Trail. I was joined by professional trail guide Tanya Wilson ( / _sunshine_808 ) who informed me this was her 12 hike up the 2000+ft elevation gain trail to the legendary lookout.
Thank you Tanya for taking me on this amazing hike, I don't think I would have had the confidence to do it alone and now I know I can do a hike of this length and intensity without meeting the grim reaper at the end.
More on the Haiku Stairs can be found here: en.wikipedia.o...

I used to hike the lower portion with my late wife when we lived at Red Hill in the ‘70s. Thanks for triggering the memories.
Thank you James for taking us all on an amazing hike. "And he's climbing.... the.... stairway to...Heaven!"
Wow, what an awesome trail to walk… Thank you for sharing James…
Great footage, I definitely want to do that hike one day! Thanks for sharing
Wow, what a super view!
An ace video James, love watching ur vids. Why is the alternative route illegal, is it because of the danger?
I briefly lived in Hawaii for 1-2 years as a kid, and I hiked this trail. You could touch the clouds with your hand at the top. Fortunate to have had the experience.
Kudos to the people who brought the stairs and handrails up there. Very impressive. Thanks.
Super beautiful! Man, I would love to do that someday myself!! 👌👍
Yes dude!!! Great trail video!! Definitely the best chronicle of this trail I’ve seen!!! Love it! Good captures! I need to hit that up next time I’m there

What a beautiful place. Reminds me of the landscape in Avatar. Orange soil, I must read about it. Thanks James :) Hope you are well.
EDIT: Of course it is volcanic soil. So lush.
Speechless

One of your best videos just awesome. 👣
Just awesome video man, nice editing and drone shoots are brilliant.
Brother, that was so amazing but looked so sketch on the ridge! \m/
After a month crossing the vast ocean without a rudder, It must have been awesome to be on Terra Firma again and hiking the paradise island of Hawai'i
Very beautiful man...this is great how you are presenting Hawaii to the world. About hiking, when you come to south america, you definitely should check the Huemul Circuit, to see the patagonian southern ice field, great pleasure to me guide you there. Fair winds!
Beautiful dude , that guide must be like ironman cardio to be doin that all the time
Nice video.
What time did yall start the hike?
How long did it take yall round trip?
Awesome! Hawaii is the best 👌
Aloha
That hike is no joke. I had a wild pig run past me where the powerlines are.
Never made it to the top yet. Great job.
Geez louise! sailing across the pacific ocean without a rudder and now hiking a peak path with extreme drop offs on either side (my legs were shaking just watching that video). Woah! What kind of coffee are you drinking? I need that.
Awesome video brother safe travels
Love it bro, what a view!!!
I think adobe premiere use this for their tutorials
One time in Kona I picked up some pakalolo from some random native Hawaiian guy in the street. He took me to an ATM and after he sold me my happy sack he offered to buy me a drink at this awesome locals bar. There was live music and we had a great time. Hawaiian people are the best. I would have never attempted to do this in other places.
Great hike to strengthen sea legs, Bro!
What an incredible bit of land.love your videos mate. Why is the alternative route illegal? It looks like a nice hike too
Love your Videos. Would love to watch a catch and cook video from you. Greetings from germany.
Should have some of these videos coming out this spring 👍🏻
Whata a view
Beautiful video! Thanks, James. I've never been to Hawaii before but I hope to visit soon. If so, I may look you up and offer to buy you a beer and hang out for a while, brother. If that's okay with you.
Nice hike!
Cool!
Came by to do some well wishing and smack on that like button . ,👍. Follow suit good peeps. Say hello and toss a like
That was really cool. Why is the other way illegal looks safer?
I think some of the stairs need repaired and it’s government property so it’s closed to the public and illegal
I live kaneohe and the land thats on that side is owned by board of water supply and they won't allow passage due too liability and its dangerous and alot of rescues...
The stairs are all metal and good ...
Hi sir how many hours for this hike? Going back and forth?
What a place for a zip line.
I just did it and took the turn too early, right at the sign and ended up climbing the wrong ridge 😢
haha i really want to fly my paraglider from there😉
what is the legal way? i lived in hawaii for ten years and really want to hike this trail and never heard of a legal way to do it; online research confirms this and says that the moanalua valley trail is illegal because it, and the stairs, are on private property. how did you legally do this?! did you get permission from a landowner?
First air2 s army out
🤙
You aint old James just your life has made you a bit Gnarly Mate 🤣😎.....🧙♂️ greybeards are old.
Besides boat life is bad for your cardio and legs.😂🗻👍🏼
Crib Gogh in Snowdonia is like that a ridge path and then the clouds and rain 💦 💨comes in ....but its hard rock and shale but thats Wales for you.
Thats a trek .. I thought hang on whys he putting crampons on and theres no ice... That path needs one of our national trust path teams to sort it out..
They actually hire Native Nepali Himalayan villagers to plan and build paths that dont wash away. 😎👍🏼
So stoked on ridge hikes now !!!!

I have trouble with near vertical drops ..especially in high winds.😬 Glad you didnt have Tonga related problems. Though that will go on and on now.

Awesome! Did that same hike 3 times, each hike had different weather conditions. Stairway to Heaven unfortunately will be torn down by the state!
youtube wouldn’t let me edit or delete my previous comment but ok i see what’s going on now. i watched some of the video. you did the back trail, legally, but setting foot on the stairs at all is illegal, which is what i thought, which is why i was confused. ps my eventual goal is sailing all over like you!
of course stop people from living their freedoms to take the stairs up, I will opt for the stairs.
