Finally, someone said it. Throwing clothes out just because I haven’t worn them in a year, has never felt comfortable to me. I have a cucci purse I purchased in 1979, rarely comes out of my closet, but gives me great pleasure when it does. Saving it for my granddaughter.

I think No Buy is like trying to go on a diet where you avoid something completely. For me those type of diets never work. I end up focusing on being deprived of something. I did much better when I focused on adding healthy things into my diet. I ended up not having room for all the bad things I wanted to reduce eating. As for my closet focusing on shopping second hand if I can and always with a list and spending time playing in my closet to find new looks is my way of going on this kind of healthier more sustainable diet. It works better for me than No Buy and is sustainable behavior. Thanks for your videos and I think the red/orange button down looks fab on you.

I know it’s not your day-to-day style, but every time I see you in the more “Italian” as opposed to “French” style - more sexy glam rather than understated chic - it takes my breath away! Here’s to 2022 providing more opportunities for those moments of whimsy!!

Your advice regarding decluttering in these COVID years is spot on. Just because your job is currently remote, don’t ditch all those office pieces just yet! You don’t know what the future will bring and it would be a shame to have to rebuy all of those clothes.

What a great recap of 2021! Even if we dont have regular occasions to dress up, I really feel we need to dress to boost our confidence and making us feel good. In 2022 even if Im working from home or going to grocery, I wear my pumps and my favorite items. We only live once, no one knows when the pandemic will end so better start to be fabulous everyday just for us, we deserve nothing but the best🥰A bientot!

I often wear my best perfume and red lipstick even if I'm not leaving the house, and instead of wearing my flat boots to go for a quick pick-up errand, I'll zip up my heeled ones and strut through the parking lot as if I was crossing a dance floor. I WILL BE FABULOUS, Covid be darned!

I always have categories in my wardrobe (eg. occasion, church, etc) - I’ve never subscribed to decluttering something not worn for 6 months to a year because I have purposes for the pieces in my wardrobe - I do believe in curating your wardrobe so all pieces I enjoy wearing - Cheers!!!

True, I keep a "work" collection and a "gala" collection, even though my work attire needs change from time to time, and the formal events are spanning farther and farther away. There are too many gems in there---I'd never be able to replace them with pieces of the same quality or that I enjoy as much.

Totally agree with your advice on decluttering. At my tender age, I have seen trends repeat themselves three or four times already if not more. i have a couple of rubbermaid bins in the basement for hot and cold weather clothes. They are labelled „not current but too dear to give away“. If I get tired of a piece that is still in good shape that’s where it goes until I pull it out again and it feels like I have a new item without going shopping.

My big weakness is vintage and tartan wool pieces. That’s it. That’s the place where I REALLY have to try my darnedest to say no. I just got back from the flea market and I found a vintage wool kilt (yes, made in Scotland) and I did cave to it. But I am trying, especially since I’m working on knocking my student loans down a few pegs and I’m not pulling in that much per month

funny you mention that rule about deleting items not worn in 6 mos to a year... i used to do hard core declutters, than i would end up having to re purchase similar items because of those wardrobe gaps i wanted and needed for those few and far between occasions.. lesson learned the hard way . i am now a bit more diligent about what i edit and more intentional about holding onto those items. love the chatty videos. all good!!!

Totally agree with not decluttering something because it’s not been worn for 6/12months, especially during these pandemic times! Sometimes things just need a rest!I have a Ghost dress which I love and bought at a sale around 30 years ago! It’s been in and out of my go to items over the years but I love the fit and style, it’s black and SO versatile. I love it today as much as the day I bought it. Last summer, after I started watching your videos, I came up with new ways to wear it which gave me so much joy! I’m so glad I never decluttered it, and don’t plan to any time soon☺️. If you love pieces, they make you feel great and can be restyled, why get rid of them because someone says there’s a time limit🤷🏻‍♀️
I also think that your attitude to buying is brilliant! Totally agree about “no buy” feeling restrictive and much prefer the “ low buy” approach, shopping with intention and consideration, to a list! I’ve had some great pre-loved purchases since I took your advise about second hand first - all of them either brand new or only lightly worn. Most of the few things that I have bought new, I have tried to buy from ethical brands, when there is a sale or money off offer. I find that this fits better with low buy than no buy, because if something on your wish list can’t be sourced second hand but comes up on sale/offer when you’re on a no buy, then it seems sad to miss the opportunity. It’s not buying something just because it’s in a sale, it’s buying something on your wish list at a great price😊.

I totally made the same experience. My shopping was a little bit over the top, but instead of relaxing i tried a no buy and I escalated almost instantly. I couldn't think about anything else, wanted to buy something all the time and did that, and then I really went over the top. Now i do budgeting and I do the 30/30 rule from the minimalists (if something i more than 30 dollars/Euro i wait for 30 hours before buying, to minimize my impulse buys). That works wayyyy better

So grateful you brought up the 'declutter if not worn for 6-12 months' issue Alyssa. I have some beautiful timeless boots and shoes that I am just so glad I have never parted ways with despite not wearing during this never ending pandemic. Classic styles that I love as I am not a trend driven person at all. When I do get to wear these items I always get asked where I bought them from, some are 10 to 20 years old! Sometimes not letting go is a good thing. Love your gorgeous Italian influenced style so much 😊🧡

Good point about not decluttering everything not worn in the last year. This past summer was one of the hottest ever and I rarely worn my linen pants around the house. Trying to declutter the misfits or worn out items and replacing only if necessary.

This year I've bought a few modern classics after years of not buying much, they did a lot of good to my mental health and the way I present myself to the world. I take more care of my appearance , look a little more on trend at 56 years young and feel amazing. I know I will wear these pieces for years. I also have wide feet and when I see great footwear that doesn't look too old/orthopaedic I buy it, it's important to take care of your feet and also look stylish. I sample trends in little inexpensive pieces, e.g. a hot pink bandanna to liven up my monochrome denim outfit is enough for me.

This video is just awesome! I appreciate it so much, especially your revelations. There's a thrift shop I go to almost every week because I've purchased some good pieces there and I have 45 minutes to kill while my girls are in dance class. Now that I know my personal style, what fit and flatters my body, and how to differentiate the quality of the piece, it has made shopping so much easier, more fun, and relaxed. Also I have become okay with leaving the store without purchasing something. But also I'm always on the lookout to replace a beloved item. Once I have something I really like such as my winter and summer handbags, I can easily whiz through that section because I don't want to settle for something less for the future. Like you I have loved high-waisted wide-leg pants since I've discovered them at age 16! There was a season in which you couldn't find them for sale. I'm so tempted to stock up in case they go out of style again. And I totally agree about not clearing something out of the closet just because it's been a certain amount of time that you haven't worn it. That rule would only make sense if you have a tiny closet and no storage space. I only let go of things that I have tried over and over and know that I really don't like them for some reason. Have a blessed 2022!!!

You will always, hands down go for your favourite one every time. What I'm struggling to find are basics, like merino long sleeves in really nice bright colours. Every sustainable brand I come across do very basic colour ways.

I like it that you repeat your clothes and use different combinations. I watch some channels and they are hauling out 20 new things every video. Where the hell do they put all those clothes? I know they get gifted a bunch, but really!!! They must have a warehouse! It can give me ideas but I don’t want to buy, buy, buy anymore. I like it that you are honest! I have gotten myself a wish list and think I will try to limit myself to one item a month. I don’t want to go no buy….That is just too severe a change for now. I try to set goals I can attain. I like to be content and as I age, I don’t want to be a fashion martyr! Loved the workshop this weekend! So much fun and a great way to spend the afternoon! And I love clothes and shopping. Love that you mentioned that you don’t have to discard from a piece when you haven’t worn them in a year. I make clothing that have a classic style and also my occasion wear is rather timeless. So I have garments in my closet that I had in college. Back then I already had the classic style I still have. And still having the same size I can still wear everything. Only problem is I have way too many clothes ( making them myself and having a youtube channel) but still I will not do any away. When I did donate some half a year ago, next month I missed them because I wanted to wear them 🤣

When I refound it in the wash stand we used as a tv stand for twenty years…there it was. The receipt inside from my era was for dental work…two fillings for $27. That’s without any dental insurance. As much as I was able to stick to that I've also noticed I appreciate items a tiny bit more when they're brand new and not second hand.
It's almost as if I feel better within myself 🙄

I love how the goals and measurement against them was so straightforward - easy, without being oversimplified. The idea of questioning whether something is a gap vs. simply something you can live without is interesting. (I hadn’t considered that perspective before. The idea of a gap seems like something that has to be filled, which isn’t always true.)
I definitely agree with your take on the declutter rules. I have plenty of pumps and going-out clothes, and some business travel clothes I simply haven’t worn, but don’t want to part with yet.

Sadly the pandemic has brought on extra weight for me so many of my office wear pieces are a tad tight 🙁. Not even done watching, but I had to jump in and say: 1) I love that you're doing this video haha, and 2) YES to the point you've made a number of times about the "if you haven't worn it in a year, part with it" rule. I couldn't agree more with what you've said regarding occasion-wear, and I wanted to add that I feel the same applies to certain quality garments that may only suit your life . Case in point: I have giant feet that also require lots of support, haha. I had a pair of beautiful tall suede boots were both my size and extremely comfortable. However, because they had heels and I hadn't worn heels in awhile, I parted with them THINKING OF THAT DARN RULE. haha. I've regretted the move countless times since, and actually just managed to find their identical twin second-hand so yay, but I shouldn't have donated them in the first place. I'm so careful with the rest of my wardrobe that storing a single pair of boots that I love - but might only use here and there - should have been a no brainer, and I'm trying to carry that lesson forward.

Completely agree w you on occasion wear and even a few edgier pierces and not decluttering all of them. I love basics most of the time but like to liven it up every now again. I could go two years w out wearing certain dresses.

I love your videos and your slow fashion tips are exactly what I need since I have such limited space. We are traveling around Europe in a camper and I want to seriously up my style game because European women are FABULOUS! We were in Seville last month and headed to Lisbon & Porto in February. I have a completely different body shape than you - 5’7” plus sized 16, very curvy (like my waist is a size smaller than my hips and legs) so working on using your methods but checking out other influencers for what will work best on my body.

Here is a thing about second hand that I have realized: Purchasing 2nd hand is much easier to accomplish if you live in a city where the 2nd hand/consignment store choices are much more readily available. When you live in a very rural area as I do, there are very few choices. And as you know, purchasing 2nd hand takes A LOT more shopping time to find something suitable. And buying 2nd hand online is SUCH a hit or miss when you can't try things on. Leads to a quantity of thumbs down purchases. And petite sizing is an issue. I'm very petite (5'1") and that really narrows options. Unless I buy petite, clothing just does not look right on me. Anyway, that is my soapbox. I appreciate 2nd hand is a great option for some folks.

I relate a lot, online thrifting is not for me, I've tried it and ended up with things I didn't really like or didn't fit me well. In person, where I live there are very few thrift stores and sadly they're filled with fast fashion garbage, it's really hard to find good quality. The only thing I got second hand that I really love and wear over and over is a vintage leather jacket from the 80s that I got for 25€. It's beat up but it's cool and unique because that brand now doesn't even make genuine leather items anymore. I wish I was as lucky as that day with second hand but the store is far away and I can't go whenever so my chances are low.
Right now I'm renewing my closet and I'm focusing on buying good quality things that I love will last me a long time. To me, it doesn't really matter if they're new, if you buy consciously only items you really need and take care of them so they serve you for years and years.

Thank you for addressing the “if you don’t wear it for a year get rid of it “ rule and why it doesn’t always apply. Especially nowadays when we are dealing with periods of quarantine/ staying home, we are going to let items go unworn for longer. Many of my clothes are Stage looks being a musician, and obviously if I tossed out all my “things I didn’t wear for a year” I’d have to get rid of quite a lot. It’s really something personal to everyone as far as guidelines for wardrobe purging

Very useful video Alyssa. I have have had no chance to wear 80% of my wardrobe for the past two years but I will not be getting rid of it for that reason. Everything is pretty much timeless and classic in only those colors which suit me. I can dress the pieces up or down. Now I just need somewhere to go!!! UGH.

She is an icon of style in whole Latin America. Furthermore, magazine always show how Queen Letizia of Spain copy Juliana Awada😝 . I would love if you recreate one of Juliana Awada outifit. I usually keep to this rule: discard if not worn in a year. But, these pandemic years have been so strange, I only went out for groceries, that I’ll just restart that clock when it’s reasonably safe to be out and about again. I think that time is not far away, now that Omicron has peaked where I live (San Francisco area).

I loved the lookbook! You are so wise and thoughtful in your decision making, but I differ with you on one key point. That's getting rid of old favorites (pumps) because you haven't worn them in a year. The last two years took us completely offline and out of our normal patterns. You have some beautiful pieces that may become treasured again as things change. I recommend you box your pumps and store them in an area outside your main closet for at least another year. Perhaps consider wearing them in the interim. Revisit their fate after the year. The clothing pieces had their chance but didn't suit. Set them free for another to love.

I am on a make-up no buy and pretty small budget for clothes. I am pretty happy with how I have accumulated clothes over the years. I wore a over 20 years old wool sweater this week, a Robert Scott. It is still beautiful. Anyway I have always bought more classic than fast, so I have a lot of beautiful things. I do NOT discard clothes. I have some things of my Mothers that she kept. I then wore them. I do of course get rid of worn out or unwearable. I bought a Baaba sweater in December. Oh my goodness so lovely. But I am counting it as my January and February budget. Sorry to ramble. Love your channel
