JDM SUBARU EJ20 NA SWAP

- Swapped the stock SOHC EJ25 out of my 2001 Subaru Forester for a JDM EJ20 probably the best option for replacing an aging EJ25. These EJ20 motors can be had for around $600 and will net you better fuel economy along with a smoother and wider power band than the stock EJ25.
Big thanks to Jay For stopping by and helping out! Check out his channel.

A true friend always stays till midnight or longer when helping a friend fix a car he’s a keeper lol
Dude your pointer had me rolling, hilarious, yet informative!
Wow in 2024! You gotta love your Subaru's Brother !!
I did this same swap on my 1999 Forester it was a pain in the ass, but well worth it.
bought the same engine from the jdm importers in NE philly back in july, swapped it in my 99 impreza obs this august when it was 100' outside. your video was very helpful and i just wanted to say thanks. been over 5k miles since the swap and it's doing great.
Happy to hear that!
Great ! I just did the swap too, I’m in central PA, haven’t really drove the car yet because I haven’t had time as i just finished the swap.. do you really get better fuel economy? I would imagine this engine to be weaker then the ej25 ? Do you think it will pass state emissions?
@@anthonyr5869 I currently have an CEL for the fuel trims never figured it out but I dont take it to inspection so I haven't put any effort into figuring out the CEL.
@@RalphsGarage I have a po440 currently that I have to figure out
For everybody who is swapping in a 2.0L keep the coil and wires because they can be mounted 180° backwards and you can swap cylinders 1-2 and 3-4 on the coil because it batch fires. It will save you 200 bucks and could last the life of the swap. Worked on my Subaru Baja. You use one bolt normally and make a small drop-down bracket relocation bracket for the second bolt.
yep doing this on my 2000 Foz tomorrow. Thanks!
Yho..! This is Dope Man. Thank you So Much..
Very helpful thank you!
Damn flooring it!
You have to with the NA EJ20 haha
Love the old school teacher pointer lol 😂
I'm swapping a ej203 in my 2002 forester. I can confirm to check the cam and crank gears. The jdm engine was different than the usdm 2.5 I pulled out.
How does it drive
@@akidim13 drives like a Honda Civic, not much down low, but smoother and loves to rev. Runs very well.
@@aaronhanna6703 okay cool bro thank you, that’s what I’ve been hearing and if it’s manual you can’t really tell the difference in power to-to badly and that it’s better on gas mileage and more reliable .. my rod bearing went bye bye 3 days into owning my wagon so swapping it in this week coming up
Thanks for this Nice video. Question why u have to replace also camshaft and crankshaft sensors?
love your vedio bro
Im doing this same swap :) in hopefully week or so my motor just got ordered
How was it
Ya, how’d it go?
@@kw2519 well I did it , and to be honest just a slight horsepower decrease but nothing too noticeable, great little engine no problems
@@akidim13 no check engine lights ?
@@anthonyr5869 none whatsoever, just remember you have to change out a sprocket I’m not sure which one I forgot and also I believe the alternator or starter, it’s 2 things that you for sure have to remove from the 25 and swap over to the 20
Great video!! Could I fit a ej205 in a Subaru legacy L 1997, the ej22 on mine is going out now. I’m
Interested learning how to do the swap.
Just did the same swap. Manual 99 forester. The engine cranks then starts then dies. Runs for like 2-5 seconds then sputters out. I’m trying to relook over everything to makes sure it’s not some dumb mistake but I can’t figure it out yet. New coil, new wires, sparks have one a few k on them so basically new….. maybe I’m just missing something. Any ideas would be appreciated thanks.
Do I need to use the ej25 temperature sensor in the ej20 or I will be fine with ej20 tem. Sensor? As the engine run for sometime then stopped and could not getted running again.
I just did this swap, wondering if it will pass emissions any ideas ? It should ?
Great vid. I swapped mine about the same time as you. Ours runs great and purrs like a kitten, but any kind of incline and it struggles to climb it. It'll get there but it takes a while. The RPMs just don't go up so it's not a lack of power in the engine, it's just that the vehicle's computer is telling it to shift at like 3-3.5k instead of letting it rev higher when more power is needed. It's almost like it upshifts just when you need it not to. If we're going down a level road it shifts just fine. I imagine a manual transmission would be an entirely different story. Anyone experience this and have any luck getting better rev range out of the automatic?
I want to do this on an 09 Forester X. Would it be the same?
I'm doing a switch from a subaru 2.5 sohc outback engine to a 2.0 subaru jdm engine. What timing belt did you use on the 2.0. The parts store needs a year and a car to look up anything
Awesome video.. doing this to my 99 forester their weekend. Same thing.. 2.5 to a 2.0. You think I'll have issues with the clutch? Considering it's from the oem 2.5?
Hey @mrps590, I just did this swap, the clutch definitely feels different, I think it is because it is running too rich, did you have the same issue? if so, how did you fix it?
Could you manual swap while doing this? What else would you need?
Will an EJ20 block go with EJ25 heads?
what jdm motor is that? A EJ201 OR EJ203? And whould a 201 work with this swap
Was curious if the timing belt and intake gasket where the same as the ej25? Planning on doing this swap to my 01 forester as well. Any tips you’d give?
The timing belt and gaskets are the same
Just make sure you swap or confirm the cam and crank gear some of them are different from the usdm motors.
What are some of the differences in driving characteristics y'all observe going from 2.5 to 2.0? Noticeable at all?
Great video, do you know if replacement parts such as the spark plugs and MAP sensor would be the same as the original EJ25 after the swap?
Yes use OEM parts for all the external sensors ect.
I know this was asked previously, but was this an ej201, ej202, or ej203?
Fellow NJian!! I am now doing this in mine.. in Central NJ. What part are you in?
Right outside philly in Jersey
If I was to do this swap on my manual forester , do you know what clutch and flywheel would work?
use all USDM stuff what ever clutch your forester calls for.
So did you use the Usmd crank sensor instead of the Jdm ones.? Thanks in advance🤙
Yes all usdm sensors
What's the reason for the manifold swap? sensor for the ecu?
The wiring harness is different, easier to swap the manifold as a whole.
Is the N/A EJ20 more reliable than the N/A EJ20? my Engine Block has a hole in it. Doing the swap tomorrow.
It is much less prone to the head gasket failures but I uses mostly the same components. Mine just runs. I dont do anything to it maybe twice a year I change the oil and top off the tires it just runs.
Will the jdm ej22 swap in usdm ej25 do the same IM , crank , cam sensor ... like on ur video or just for jdm ej20
This will work for tue non turbo motors if you are swapping a turbo motor it will be much more involved
Yes, about SOHC only
Great job on the swap! I have a jdm Ej20 non turbo in replacement of my Ej25 as well. I was wondering if you would know what could fix the check engine code for p0170 it’s a fuel trim bank 1. I bought the car with it swapped and I don’t know what the previous owner did or didn’t do on the swap. It has a sluggish acceleration and doesn’t rev over 5k when I’m accelerating on the freeway. I’ve taken it to a shop and they still couldn’t figure it out. Done all maintenance to it but just don’t know what else to do. Any thoughts on this?
Clogged injectors?
I just swapped my Ej25 with the Ej20 and I also tripped a P0170 code. Hasn’t popped back up yet since I cleared it. Fingers crossed.
I just let that check engine light shine on
Hey dude did you ever figure it out? I have the exact same swap and code on mine
@@austintorres5388 what year is yours ? What are your fuel trims ???? Both long and short
Great! - I just did the same swap, however, the car is running too rich.. did you have the same issue? if so, how did you fix it?
I didn't have any problems with it running rich.
Depending on where you’re located would you be able to swap my EJ 20
Not turbo swap?
I want to do a turbo swap
Hey I’m having a problem with the swap anyway you can reach out to me ?
What kind of problem?
whats the advantage of swapping JDM EJ20 over the EJ25 ?
It's cheaper and less prone to head gasket issues.
@@RalphsGarage how much power does the JDM EJ20 produce ? more less than EJ25 ?
How does the power difference feel of the motor between the ej20 and ej25?
There is definitely less torque down low but it pulls smoother and harder out to redline and gets better gas mileage. I have been battling a CEL for the rear O2 sensor but I thing that is a problem un related to the swap.
@@RalphsGarage Good to know. I'll be doing the same swap soon. Thanks for all the info in the vid!
@@BETTALIFE101 did you do swap yet , doing mine this week since rod bearing headed out , kinda nervous for the power difference
@@akidim13 no. Maybe sometime in August. Let me know what happens with yours.
@@BETTALIFE101 runs like a champ bro , picked her up today , spark plug boot for cylinder 1 was halfway out for some reason causing a misfire but pushed it back in and no problems , power is more linear and does rev higher
Is this ej20 engine direct bolt?
Yes most subaru engines are direct bolt into any other subaru. Just make sure to check the items I stated in the video to be able to run it.
@@RalphsGarage awesome! Im keeping this swap in mind. I just bought a $900 02 forester project. Im currently slowly taking the engine out of the car.
You're going from a ej25 to an ej20? Why? That's less power.
Cheaper easier to find replacement engine and while it's less displacement it's not really much less power. Gets better fuel mileage though.
@@ralphfoy8778 Too bad you can't install a EJ20 turbo. That's what i would like to see.
@@vijayanchomatil8413 you can, it's more involved you'll need to merge the turbo and non turbo wiring harness but lots of people have done it.
@@ralphfoy8778 How do i do it? I want to do it!
So why would anybody do this swap to an NA? You just downgraded you engine for no good reason, congrats sir.
You obviously don't know much about the NA EJ20, better gas mileage, wider power band and much cheaper than rebuilding or buying another EJ25.
@@RalphsGarage I didn't know that they had a wider power band. I'm seriously considering switching my 2.5 has 200k so a 2.0 would have less miles
@@matthewcanavan8275 my girl daily drives the forester. Its slow but it was slow with the ej25 atleast now we don't have to put oil in it twice a week.
