About five years ago, Brian, you inspired me to pull the engine out of my 2007 Legacy. It took me two months to complete the job, and I was a different person by the end. I couldn’t have done it without your videos showing me what to do, but also the proper frame of mind for such a job: calm, organized, focused, no anger/ frustration.
same here Brian, i made my old subie wagon last me another year just from saving all the labor costs and doing motor swap/work myself. thanks for the videos!
About 3 years ago I did HG mls on my 07 forester without pulling engine. Now I’m pulling an engine out to do the same and a few more things. Thanks Brian!
I've pulled many Subaru engines in the past 20 years, but it's been a while now that I'm not a mechanic. Well, timing belt broke. So here we are again! Was nice to watch a quick refresher and it all came back to me. Only thing I do differently is I put a piece of plywood in front of the condenser or radiator to prevent the crank pulley from blasting a hole into it on a bad day. Thanks for the brief video, straight to the point. Was exactly what I needed.
This it the first time I have come across one of your videos and I have to say that I really like the way you broke everything down as simple as you could.
This method is fine for the person with all the time in the world to get the engine out. The faster more efficient mechanic attaches to hoist, starts pulling up, and then uses a cutting torch to eliminate everything that continues to hang on to the engine.
I have the 2001 Subaru Forester. It has almost 350,000 MI and going strong! I had the motor rebuilt at 297,000. I noticed a rear main seal leak and my transmission started slipping. So now I have changed the filter in the transmission and putting back in Dexron 3. I'm at the point of pulling the motor to the rear main seal. I'm my own mechanic but Subarus definitely have certain things that you have to know or damage can be done. your videos have definitely maybe confidence to do this and not have to pay a Subaru mechanic a ridiculous amount 💰 Thank you for that
Pulled a Subaru engine to replace the head gaskets just before Christmas. I pulled the heads in the car using your previous Subaru video as an example then realized what a pain it would be to reinstall the heads. My son and I were the cherry picker to pull the case without heads. When we got it ready to go back in, the only rental cherry picker we could get didn't work. Itwas reinstalled with three of us, ratchet straps, and a 4 foot long 2x6. It really wasn't that hard.
Cruising vids on pulling an EJ-25... I'm having a devil of a time splitting the motor from the trans. Its like I forgot a bolt, but I've rechecked a dozen times. I've 6 bolts, 2 nuts... it should be loose...
Somebody forgot to change the oil? Premature engine failure what a shame. Excellent tips on what needs to be done to remove the engine. Sometimes the block can seize to the trans due to corrosion and some serious persuasion is required to separate the two..
A little late to this, but for me, I’ve done it 4 or 5 times , and almost every time I forget about the grounding straps, just gunna put that out there
I use 2 of those giant HVAC zip ties and hook the ac compressor to the top corner of the hood (being careful to keep from kinking the hoses. It works great!
Good vid I leave the fan in though If you remove the two 10s on the thermostat housing comes out fine, good video, I was pulling the intake manifold for no reason 🤔
Hi Brian, I just had my 2013 Crosstrek in the shop for the valve spring recall. the tech did the job in one day, He's had a lot of practice. doing 1 a day since the recall. Im a diesel guy. I'm thinking wow as i'm looking into the engine compartment..lol they told me he has to pull the engine so it could possibly go into 1 1/2 days , He did it in under 7 hours...I was impressed. what do you think? I had them change plugs since he was there...lol
My first one took 8 hours, 12 if dealing with rust and putting new timing belt and water pump, but I'm sure suburu guys are faster than me I work for gm
Hey Brian, thanks for sharing all of your knowledge. Such great content. Would a load leveler help on the removal and installation when lining up the studs with the bell housing? I'm about to replace my Outback motor.
I certainly appreciate your methodology to how you approach the job at hand. Having been an aviation mechanic in the military we were taught organizational skills that allowed each member to pick up on a job where the other might have been left off. Plus I'm kind of a "neat freak" so that works too. :)
Like your style brother. I gotta have positive vibes when I do the jobs like this. I'm in the middle of swapping in a 2.5i from a 2003 subaru impreza outback sport with low mileage into a 2007 impreza . Hope it works out . Thanks and do you pull transmission cross member or not?
I’ve never owned a Subaru and see them often on Craigslist with blown head gaskets. Is there a way to replace them and ensure they won’t blow again? Other than the gaskets I’ve heard great things about them.
Chump Johnson short answer from what I have read is no, oil leaks from Subaru head gaskets are a feature. The engine case cylinder design is crappy and leaves the oil passages with very little support on the bottom of the engine. However the claim is that a properly installed head gasket with the "new" design will last up to 150,000 miles before it fails again.
Any thoughts on why a 2.0l JDM engine would work to replace an EJ25 in 1999-2005 Subies but not a 2006? Was going to swap one in for my daughter's legacy wagon but the warehouse said it wouldn't work so now thinking of junking it...
yup, had my LED on my 01 in the driveway....gap opened up, PO left the lower nuts off to the cross member,...was I supposed to roate the automatic somehow and remove bolts, ? taking a break, will try tomorrow in daylight
Do I need any like 3/4 impact CV bits or anything like that to get the bellhousing bolts off? This is the only thing I think I have never already done before in the whole process.
How many A/c compressors do you have? Or was the one tucked into the hole a power steering pump. My wife wanted a Subaru but I told her that you are always replacing head gaskets so no. Was I wrong?
I have 2 or 3. Pumps are good, but clutches failed. 220k miles is about how long the "brake pads" on a compressor clutch go. If you do the head gaskets right they go about 150k-200k miles.
Great video and just in time for me to pull my xt engine out. No I’m not a mechanic but I’m handy. Engine needs a rebuild timing belt starched:( I think turbo needs to go before the engine comes out. Brian didn’t mention but I think fluids need to be drain first?
When I call the boneyard for engines, they ask if is from an at or mt car... does it really matter? If so, why and what do I need to do to make the swap successful?
they get easier I am doing my 4th one. take notes, take pictures, yellow tape and black marker, think in systems, cooling system, power steering, ac, fuel, wiring, bolts...
Do you have an E-mail that I could send you some pictures of Subuaru cylinder heads. They’ve got small cracks near the spark plug hole. I’m just curious of your opinion on them. I can’t find anyone with the knowledge to tell me if they are ok or not. What I do know is machine shop will not touch the spider cracks. Anyhow if you could help I’d be very grateful if not I understand. Thanks.
literally millions of them on the road, I've seen much worse from american factories believe me. it's more a case of engineering design right to the edge by Fuji motors.
This company claims their engines have 45 to 60 thousand miles because many times they are pulled in Japan... jdmenginezone.com/products/subaru-legacy-1999-2005-jdm-replacement-for-2-5l-engine-ej20-sohc-2-0l?variant=31786249289809¤cy=USD&
@@jamiewmattingly Do yourself a favor. Go to CarSensor and look up used cars. You'll see plenty of vehicles in Japan being sold with much higher mileage. Timing belts are replaced at 100k km's. Some well prior due to not being driven and are changed because of age. You can also check Yahoo Auctions Japan and you'll see older EJ's with much higher mileage than 50k.
@@jamiewmattingly Note: The website you linked says 45-60k Miles. That's just shy of 100k km's. IF you buy an engine from them, make sure to change the timing belt before installation. It's due to be replaced. The low mileage is due to how most Japanese use their cars and not due to any laws or routine engine swaps. That isn't a thing.

Two months!!!! Holy cow, atleast you got it👍😅😅😅😅😅
I'm in the middle of doing the same thing to my 05 FXT and am so happy (15 year old rusted bolts aside) with the process!

I’m doing this tomorrow. I’ve done it before, but your video is a perfect refresher
This it the first time I have come across one of your videos and I have to say that I really like the way you broke everything down as simple as you could.
Right in for the video. I’d love to see you pull EJ series turbo engine. It’s been a challenge for me so far

Brian, you continue to be my "Go-to Subaru repair how-to video guy"; I'll work on the title, I promise.
All the positivity i can Get! And took me minutes to remove the engine today man! So glad to find you months ago happy wrench!

Dang, that looks like an easy engine to pull. Maybe I should start working on Subarus.

I put a ratchet strap around the harmonic balancer and around the arm of the hoist a couple of clicks it will get you your right angle going back in
that was awesome super helpful. got me over some of the anxiety of doing this in a car i plan to put back together!
I may have to call on you someday to "have fun" on my 2006 Outback.
Cool, trying to get nerve up to pull my supercharged EJ253 for first time to put in Delta camshafts. Looks not really all that bad.
Great info !!! I'll be doing this, this week !!! 2010 subaru legacy gt
I use 2 of those giant HVAC zip ties and hook the ac compressor to the top corner of the hood (being careful to keep from kinking the hoses. It works great!
I take the whole bracket off with it. I made a piece of metal for my lift that I screw in the front where the bracket was.

Bravo, done a couple of these, and you are spot on.

Very useful thank you. Eventually will need to change my clutch on my 93 legacy
Do you have any tip, tricks, or videos for the FB25? Have to tackle headgasket / swap the motor in 2014 Forester 2.5i soon.
Where do you buy your used engine thanks for the video
You are the teacher

I love my German torque wrenches. Lets me know all my bolts are gutentight!
Nice video Brian. Never pulled out a boxer. Are you putting a reman engine in?
Put a junk yard engine in it from All Truck and Car in Salt Lake. It did the same thing and knocked after 29 days. Swapped it again.

I could deal with that since the engine doesn’t look too painful to remove
I've got a 08 2.5i that failed on me should I swap out for the same engine or "upgrade" trading selling isn't an option
hey brian just want to ask if doni need to pull out the pin before i can pull out the engine for mt impreza?
Don't lift the transmission up any higher than you need to. I did, and pulled the CV apart at the hub.
GOOD JOB THANKS FOR SHARING thumbs up and shared
Thanks Drew!

03 now, and the sob is not coming apart....seems like something is still bolted, but I can't find anything holding it... OIL looks brown, watery...
Brian, thank you for all your videos.
Q: once you pull the engine out, where do you place it to work? Can I place it right on the ground(pallet)?
I either work on it with a stand, on the crane chain, or set it in a used tire.
Do I need any like 3/4 impact CV bits or anything like that to get the bellhousing bolts off? This is the only thing I think I have never already done before in the whole process.
Well done man, AWSOME
Where did you remove that wishbone @ 2:20 from????
You're great man!
yay soobie vids!
You asked for it- I listened. Thanks for your comments and hitting the like button Eric!
Ty sir great video
Was that one 10 minute sentence?? 🤔🤔🤔🤣 Nice info anyway, especially about jacking up bit by bit as removing. 👍
Yes it was Boris. Yes it was! Glad it was a helpful 10 minute sentence though.

Check the video description for the list ; )
When I call the boneyard for engines, they ask if is from an at or mt car... does it really matter? If so, why and what do I need to do to make the swap successful?
I've put AT in MT cars without a problem. You just have to swap the flywheel for a flexplate off the old one.
Knock knock. Whose there? :,D
Do the motor mounts unbolt from the bottom?
Bottom
2 14mm nuts on the bottom of the cross member.
3:44 Power Steering Pump**
What would cause a rod to that to a suburu engine?
Bad Luck, Low oil, over revving, metal fatigue.
We'll be doing an autopsy on another engine that was knocking, but didn't break the block. Video coming next month!
To do or not to do
Looks so complicated
How do ya remember how to put it all back together if trying for the first time?
they get easier I am doing my 4th one. take notes, take pictures, yellow tape and black marker, think in systems, cooling system, power steering, ac, fuel, wiring, bolts...
Thanks for the tips

I forgot to mention it’s a ej 205 “turbo Impreza”
Tyler Davis Junk it.
Brian talks about those cracks in his video on removing the heads without pulling the engine. They can be repaired, but usually you replace the head.
Feels like cylinder 4 is designed to fail from factory. Really disappointed in EJ motors.
literally millions of them on the road, I've seen much worse from american factories believe me.
