For me at least, the Fiery Gobblegut was easily the most annoying boss in any of the Mario Bosses. It virtually the same as the fight against the regular Gobblegut, but the for whatever reason the fire and lava this serpent dragon always left behind whenever it dug into the mini-moon or takes a chunk of the mini-moon always got me when I was younger. I died so many times trying to get this one boss that I almost used that astral Rosalina to help me win that fight. Luckily I didn't, but it still was an unenjoyable moment in the Super Mario Galaxy games.
I don't know if it counts as a Worst Mario Boss, but it's definitely a contender for being one of the most annoying boss in the Mario franchise.

I found it substantially easier than the first fight because I had the timing down already and was already jumping all the time in the first fight so I knew how to deal with the fire as well.

honestly i think that the koopalings have been fine, besides mario 2 anyways, some of the U fights COULD have been good if nintendo just blocked you from immediately stomping them, but the Wii fights for Wendy, iggy, ludwig, morton and Lemmy are fun (if you have a propeller suit against lemmy then not so much, but when i was young i wasnt good at video games enough to get there with one) and the koopalings in paper mario colour splash are fun, even with the specific item problem that kinda plagues those games, and the koopalings in paper jam are quite fun, iggy lemmy and morton being my favourite cause they are the only ones you fight ones, and are a good “final test” type thing for the running towards the camera attacks

  • @Robski10

I kind of have a soft spot for the Koopalings. Well, their designs and personalities anyway. But as bosses... yeah I get what they are seeing. Truth be told I actually like some of the their battles (mainly the ones with Iggy & Ludwig and I also like NSMBU Morton believe it or not) but not so much with some others. However I do really like their designs and personalities so that makes me like them.
And by the way, my pick for the worst boss of the Mario series is Sticker Star Bowser. And I think you know why... anyway, good list.

  • @ericwijaya2119

For me the worst boss has got to be the King's Trial from Mario Tennis Aces.
Now this might be because Kirby set my expectations way too high for what a postgame boss rush should be like but considering how after going through some of the tougher challenges in the game (single player content wise) I was expecting something a bit tougher than just rematching every boss with no changes whatsoever. If anything, I think the Boss Rush makes the bosses worse here, and that's saying something considering this is the only one of the two modern Mario sports games that has bosses in them as a selling point that doesn't instantaneously make the game crap. I mean sure, I can understand some people hating on Aces for marking the dawn of the "free update" era of Mario sports games, but I still like it nonetheless. This boss rush however, hate it, worst part of the game.
Now the bosses feeling samey thingamabob that I mentioned before might feel like more of a personal gripe than a valid complaint to you, the person reading this, which fair enough I suppose, like I said, Kirby probably set my standards way too high on how to do a proper boss rush. The main problem here isn't necessarily just the fact that the bosses are all samey, if anything it's one half of the main problem that makes up my beef with this fight. 33.3% of my entire reasoning behind the hate boner for this fight actually.
The other half of the problem here actually is the lack of a time limit, which makes these bosses infinitely more easier. Let me rephrase that for a bit. The BOSS RUSH, which is located at the POSTGAME, removes every bit of the bosses' initial fight that make them challenging in the first place (aka THE TIME LIMIT) and ends up making the bosses WORSE in comparison to when you fight them INITIALLY. It's not so much just the bosses being rehashed that gave me a hate boner for this fight, but rather how the King's Trial basically makes these bosses feel like wish versions of their inital fights. I feel like by that point, it's a LIIIITTLE BIT FAIR to have the decency to ask for the boss rush to have EX versions of the past bosses for this supposed "FINAL CHALLENGE" ? Like literally the only way you can lose this level is by breaking all your rackets, but you have to be a complete beginner to do that tbh, especially at this point in the game. I would know, that's how I literally lost.
The reward for completing it isn't any better either, if anything it makes the level WORSE. You get a replica of the Lucien racket that's been built up over the course of the game as this big bad evil guy, ain't that sweet?
But here's the real kicker, the real nutcracker in what could've been this real amazing completion reward. The LUCIEN RACKET CAN ONLY BE EQUIPPED BY MARIO. And yeah I know story context and all that but they seriously couldn't have the decency to GIVE AT THE VERY LEAST ANYONE ELSE MAJORLY INVOLVED WITH THE LUCIEN PLOTLINE? Like, oh I dunno, BOWSER? WHO'S SHOWN TO BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE RACKET JUST FINE?
Funny thing is, out of all the bosses I've faced and loathed, this is not only my most hated Mario boss so far, but it's not even that high on my top 10 worst bosses list. Then again, the King's Trial had to REALLY try to topple Genso Wanderer Clownpiece's spot as queen of the worst bosses in gaming, it's just that this boss rush clearly wasn't designed with TRYING IN MIND. IRONIC, FOR A TRIAL.

I've always been more ambivalent when it comes to the Koopaling fights in the NSMB series--not particularly great, but hardly the worst fights, and even a few decent ones. But one will always stick out to me as the worst of the bunch: Ludwig from New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
After calling in Kamek to give himself the advantage, the stage immediately shifts into a series of three platforms that constantly shift up and down the arena while generally rising upward, meaning there's no longer a floor. This means that there are only so many safe spots for Mario (and co.) to stand on while trying to get some shots in, and that's assuming you can safely get to them as you're dodging his own attacks. As I put it while playing this fight for the first time, "It's not hard to knock him down; it's getting me to stay *up* that's the trick."

Yeah, I'm part of the crowd that got completely creeped out by eels thanks to Mario 64, and that's only the tip of the iceberg in why I hate the Eely-Mouth fight so much. My own least favorites list has it bumped up to third. Granted, I haven't played quite a few of the games represented in this list.
As for my own number one... well, coincidentally, my number one happens to be one of your honorable mentions: the (original) Fawful Express. In fact, it's my most hated boss period. Why? Because no other boss I've experienced, Mario or otherwise, has ever caused me physical, real-world pain by means of screwing up my own _breathing._ I would rather fight a boss rush of every single boss in Sticker Star, while Chuggaaconroy himself is up to my ear complaining about the game the whole time, than to fight that Amber-forsaken train ever again.

As of this comment, even though Super Mario Bros Wonder revitalized the 2D Mario, the game sadly don't learn what good boss fights supposed to be. You're fighting Bowser Junior 4 times, no bosses in 2 worlds, & they've did Kamek dirty as you don't fight that Koopa wizard at all. The only good boss fight of Super Mario Bros Wonder was the final fight against Bowser which was the best Bowser fight in 2D Mario history in a very long time since Super Mario World. I give it credit thought is that at least Mario Wonder's bosses is a lot more tolerable than the ones in a disappointing Sonic Superstars which is a tedious bore & frustrating as hell. But that's saying something considering that official platformers sucks at boss fights. Ironic considering that there's one indie platformer that does the boss fight so much better than either Mario Wonder or Sonic Superstars. That was GalaxyTrail Games' Freedom Planet series. While there's some frustrating ones like Dail of Battle Glacier, Mutated Serpentine, & especially Brevon, the rest of the franchise's bosses is so much better than the official platformers. They may be harder than Mario Wonder, but at least they play fair & having good pacing compared to the frustration factor of Sonic Superstars. And as Freedom Planet series have a good storytelling & having well developed characters(Except some parts of the original considering that it has 1st game syndrome), that makes the boss battles all the more impactful as there's some great examples. Almost all fights against Serpentine, Dail of Sky Battalion, both fights against Syntax, BFF-2000, Captain Kalaw, Askal when playing as Neera Li, Corazon when playing as Carol, & Merga when playing Sash Lilac. That's assuming if you don't do the Rainbow S Ranking in the sequel. And you know something's wrong when indie developers do one job better than the official companies. I can appreciate Mario Wonder for having great visuals despite being on the Switch, better Power-Ups(Except Spring Feet & Invisibility), better level design(Except for a few duds like Search Levels & especially that Spring Feet & Invisibility section of Badge Marathon), & a much more tolerable 100% completion since there's no terrible padding unlike other Nintendo Switch games like Zelda games, Metroid Dread's Dread Mode & Boss Rush modes, and some parts of Super Smash Bros Ultimate), but FP2 does everything else better. And the less I talk about Sonic Superstars except visuals that's not on Switch, the better. In terms of recent 2D platformers, FP2's storytelling was the best ever which makes almost all the music & most of the voice acting all the more impactful, the gameplay was miles ahead of 2D Mario's slightly outdated design(Considering the traditional health system, no contact damage, & more focus on combat.), having a miles better character balancing(Compared to Mario Wonder which the main 7 playable character felt the same gameplay-wise thus nothing like 3D World or even Super Mario Bros 2 USA. Doesn't help that the Yoshis & Nabbit cannot use the power-ups thus making 100% completion impossible when playing solely as those Easy Mode guys. Just to prove the official companies' incompetence in recent times.), bosses having more variety & more challenging without being tedious & frustrating, & having better accessibility as far as I know. I respected Nintendo & Mario, but indie developers has proven that they can be better than the official companies like GalaxyTrail Games. Not only Freedom Planet 2 was a better 2D platformer than Super Mario Bros Wonder, but also miles better highspeed platformer than what Sega & Sonic Team has to offer. Trust me. With the exception of Mania, Sega cannot be trusted as they make more mistakes than making good games.
Edited as of 1/23/2024. OH YEAH! FREEDOM PLANET 2 IS COMING TO CONSOLES INCLUDING THE SWITCH AT APRIL 4TH! THIS WILL HELP EVEN MORE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT STEAM USERS GET EXCITED WHOM THEY WERE DISAPPOINTED AT SONIC SUPERSTARS! LONG LIVE GALAXYTRAIL GAMES, THE INDIE VERSION OF SEGA! 8. I don't think he's anywhere near as dumb as people say he is. But I'm glad that your complaint isn't you taking him too seriously like other people seem to do.
    7. Huh, never thought about that boss being bad, but now that you mention it, I can see why it would throw some people off. But I thought you could have also gotten more air by getting coins in the area.
    6. I hate Whomp more, but yeah this boss fight isn't good.

    4. I do like the different variations, but now that you mention it, that can get really repetitive.
    3. I HATE this thing! BTW where did you get the darker-colored bosses? They weren't dark like this when I went through the Battle Ring's boss rush.
    2. I haven't played it, but that does sound frustrating.
Dishonorable mentions: I didn't think Toad was a boss. I didn't find Grodus that bad though, but Topmaniac is pathetic. Fawful Express is definitely annoying, but I can't remember my opinion on Paper Petey Piranha.
Bad Bowser Battles: Yeah, his Sunshine fight is embarrassing. Though again, I haven't played Pinball Land, and yeah, his Partners in Time fight was UNNEEDED. And I do agree that his NSMB2 fight is bad. As for Sticker Star, I don't remember my opinion on that fight (except for the first phase having a stupid song)

Strange how one of the weakest bosses in the technical franchise is not on this list on a technicality. It's probably because Yoshi's Island is not really a Mario game despite Mario being involved. Ok, let's get it out of the way; it's Roger the Potted Ghost. All you need to do is push him off the edge, but in a sort of reverse tug of war, a couple Shy Guys attempt to push it back. Emphasis on "attempt." He does "attack" but those attacks don't do much to throw you off. Lame!
