- Danganronpa month begins with me counting down my favorite characters from across the series! Clearly this won't give me Reddit PTSD...
This video took a lot of time and effort to make. Scanning through DR footage is not as easy as it sounds, so hopefully it'll be worth it in the long run.
At least now I know how to handle the next video.

As someone who has never seen the DR3 anime, I'm not completely informed as to who everyone is. But I am still going to list a few of my personal favorites anyway. Kokichi, Nagito, and Gundham in any order, followed by Gonta, Fuyuhiko, and DR1 Byakuya which is specified because I'm not referring to the Ultimate Imposter.
I love how passionate you were about Kazuichi Soda.
It’s similar in how I love Yukari Takeba from Persona 3.
Both characters have equally good/bad quirks that make them feel more realistic as opposed to characters who embodies a trope that gets deconstructed before being reconstructed.
Well I think I might give a few Mono Coins on each of your picks.
10: Ah yes, our Watson for most of DR2. Nice place to start
9: V3's Mini mage? Cute yes and I do like her story but that slow burn was not for me.
8: Our Small Yakua Bud! My 3rd favorite from the DR2 cast. Chapter two always gets me.
7: Just Chapter 4 of DR1, moving on.
6: The Heart of Shuichi's Brain. I enjoy this goofball
5: Kicking off the top spots with The Overlord of Ice himself? Nice. (Also he's my favorite from DR2)
4: DR2's MC and hoo boy his story is a doozy.
3: I love to hate this little gremlin, good villian.
2: Looking back, yeah I like this guy. Reminds me of a my favorite from DR1.
1: Decoy Protag or not she's a good bean.
Aah Danganronpa never played a game in the series but geez watching it is like an anime adaptation of Phoenix Wright on Crack and I find it to be electrifying.
Seeing a list that doesn’t have the crazy characters at the top of the list is a breath of fresh air. My favorite character is probably miu just because of how funny her scenes are and how she’s legitimately intelligent despite how crass she is.
Finally someone who is both a fan of Sonia and Kazuichi

You know, seeing what you do and don't like about the series, you might find a lot of enjoyment out of the zero escape games. I had a lot of the same problems with the series as you and played 999 last week and it totally blew me away
Zeeo escape is on my backlog, though it'll be a while before I check that out.

Tbh this video is really fun to watch, i have always wanted to talk abt my top 10 but like idk I feel like all of my top 10 characters are all unpopular (if y'all are wondering here they are in order)

Massive respect for having Aoi Asahina here. She’s by far the most underrated character in Danganronpa. She’s so sweet and to precious to me. I put her at number 5 though.
My list:
1) Kyoko Kirigiri- I’ve loved this woman since I’ve seen the anime. She’s cool, calm and collected. Plus I like how she was never a douche to anyone.
2) Kaito Momota- The Ultimate Bro and just the perfect friend to have. His death and Kokichi winning any arguments they had hurt my soul greatly. And I adore his bromance with Shuichi
3) Gundam Tanaka- I find him to be the funniest character in all of Danganronpa. His supervillain persona isn’t too over the top. Also like you I love his reason for killing, it was so raw and so noble.
4) Kirumi Tojo- I have very little reason to like her as much as I do but I can explain some of my reasoning. Her skill set is impressive, she’s underrated, I love the way she pushes through in her execution (also her’s is my fav because it’s so unique and so brutal) and her design is pretty solid.
5) Aoi Asahina- I think she’s the most underrated character. She’s lovely. An eternal optimist that must be protected. Her urge to kill everyone when she lost Sakura was an impressive display of her loyalty to me. Yeah it was brash but I don’t blame her, and at least she managed to fulfill her wish.
6) Junko Enoshima- The best antagonist imo. She’s cunning, manipulative and has an amazing energy to her. She made me laugh and her death was satisfying.
7) Kaede Akamatsu- My fav protagonist and deserved justice. I loved her different format as a character. She’s not average but actually academically gifted and plays the piano (relatable to me). Also I respect how instead of twiddling her thumbs she was actually proactive since the beginning.
8) Makoto Naegi- He was precious. I can’t help but feel bad for him but I am happy that he chose to remain positive like Asahina instead of being over the top angst.
9) Gonta Gokuhara- An absolute cinnamon roll. I was crushed after seeing him die. Kokichi you cunning monster! Damn it all! Gonta deserved justice along with the other V3 characters on this list!
10) Peko Pekoyama- I have even less reason here but I like how she’s serious and how she’s skilled with a sword. Sometimes I like women that know how to kick butt in a fights. It’s one of three tropes I really like alongside the serious and intelligent type and the precious optimist type.
Honourable Mentions:
11) Celestia Lundenburg- A great design and her anime breakdown in the dub is hilarious.
12) Mukuro Ikusaba- I kinda want to see more of her. Her design is lovely and I like the fact she opposes Junko a bit with her exterior.
13) Maki Harukawa- Another serious type what a shocker. What can I say? I have my fav tropes and Maki falls into 2 of them like Mukuro does. I kinda like how she’s done with everything.
14) Shuichi Saihara- I do like this guy even if he’s overrated imo. He stole Kaede’s and Kyoko’s roles which annoys me slightly but doesn’t make me deduct too much points from him. He’s still very smart and I can respect that.
15) Kokichi Oma. Also overrated and more so than Shuichi. But I respect his cunning at times. But I hate how he’s always more right than Kaito. Also V3 Chapter 5 was insane.
I personally adore shuichi but looking at certain dialogues from the Japanese version, I’m wondering if he was much better in that version
Because he came off as a bit aggressive in the English dub.
My top 10 characters are very controversial for the most part:

"V3 sucked" I couldn't have agreed more. Kaede and Ryoma deserved to be in better games.
Also, yes, I agree that Monaca's the best mastermind. Pickle Satan did nothing wrong.
I feel like V3 would've actually been good if it had the same flow and writing as Chapter 1, which in my opinion is the best chapter in the whole series. For some reason, the magic just isn't there when Kaede left the scene.

Momota and Kokichi carried the rest of the game for me.
Momota because like you said is the heart of group trying to keep everyone together.
Kokichi because he was such an unpredictable character in a good way, you didn’t know what to expect from him.
@@CountShaman Yeah, I think Chapter 2 is when the game started to suck thanks to Shuichi's generic, boring, and inconsistent character, his arc basically ending that chapter, Maki and Kokichi starting to become important (God I hate those two), the general stupidity of the cast becoming slowly taking over and the fact that the game basically builds up a red herring twist at this point, with non of the "Finding the mastermind" stuff being there anyone until the last chapter. Seriously, why did they forget the secret passage 'till C6?
One Ryoma died it all started to go downhill, he was like the glue.
That's why he's my 1st place as fav characters

I think the most gut wrenching part is what you find out in the retrial over the first case.
Spoiler alert
She didn't even kill anyone. She gets killed over false charges, because Tsumugi decided to break her own rules to keep the killing game going, and that's just.. mean. And yet, I can't be mad at that small plot twist.

10 Chiaki’s solid, very likeable, in my top 3 of the girls of DR2. Really liked her in the anime too.
9 himiko gets way too much hate, I agree once again, really like her, she’s funny and precious.
8 fuyu is one of my absolute faves ever, I fucking love him, his arc, everything!
7 sakura is to this day one of my fave characters and by far the best of the “gentle giant” characters the series offers.
6 Kaito... now kaito is meh. I started out loving him so much, but with every new replay, his hypocricy and flaws ruin him so much for me.
Kaito: “If somebody betrays me it’s my fault for believing in them!”
Shuichi: “betrays” him in ch 4 by *literally saving everyones lives*
Kaito: *becomes a sulking bitch.*
how am I supposed to believe in motivational speeches of trust and cameraderie when you’re a hypocrit about it? 🙃😒
the fact that he did end up actually apologizing in the end I give him tho, even though it felt kinda half asses.
5 Gundham is amazing! I love this over the top animal guy so much! XD
4 Hajime is pretty neutral to me and probably my least fave protag, but that doesn’t mean I dislike him. He’s absolutely amazing and interesting as fuck.
3 Monaca UDG YESS! While I don’t appreciate the UDG slander ;P I’m glad she made it on this list. I hate her guts, but she’s by far my favorite “mastermind” of the games
2 Kazuichi... kazuichi is honestly rather low on my list. His FTEs save his ass, but main story wise? It’s a descend into uncomfortableness. Also, wdym he was never creepy? Pushing himself into a girls only event, running after sonia like a dog in heat for 4/5 of the game, getting progressively worse... hell, he literally starts getting off on getting talked down to *during a trial* and constantly harasses sonia. That’s far too far for an “innocent crush”. Towards the end of DR 2 I had the feeling he took teruterus role. None the less. I’m not gonna judge you for liking him lol, just the “not creepy like teru” part was aching me to speak up.
1 Kaede is a solid pick for a first place, she’s energetic cool, gets along with the class and was a delight to play!
Jesus Christ. FINALLY someone rightfully acknowledges Monaca as not only the best DR villain by far, but one of the best characters in the franchise. I could honestly write endlessly about her, it's almost like she's tailor made for me personally. But I'm gonna keep it somewhat brief while hitting most of my favorite aspects.
Monaca has a silly demeanor and can deliver a comedic exchange. Despite this, they she never stops being a legitimately intimidating presence. I really like the juxtaposition of childish/comedic and serious traits, and they walked the line perfectly in my opinion. They also built her up very well. Even though all the Warriors of Hope do terrible things you see them vulnerable, but they don't spoonfeed you Monaca's sad backstory. The fact that the other villains are so heinous, but still presented as human makes Monaca seem all the more demonic and controlling. Even then they still bothered to give her an interesting backstory, and they respect your intelligence to piece together your own answer.
Speaking of that backstory, there's a surprising amount of depth and little details that might require several playthroughs to notice. Like all the other Warriors of Hope there's some theme of abuse, Monaca's one gives some insight on the effects of neglect. Monaca feels the most isolated and detached from her family to the point where they don't care enough to feed her or check her injuries, so it makes sense why she'd latch onto Junko and her ideology. It got me thinking about the stone face experiment and how unconscious and difficult to grasp neglect is. Then there's the cultlike behavior and indoctrination techniques reminiscent of Junko. The scenes with Kotoko and Nagisa give me a sort of proto-Angie vibe, even the confession at the end where she talks about betraying her friends from the start sound a bit like post hoc reasoning and twisting the truth to manipulate everyone.
She also compliments other characters very well. There's many parallels with Nagito, them both working as two sides of the same coin and following similar methods/ideologies. Both mutilating themselves in devotion to Junko, cutting of their hands and slitting their wrists. Treating the whole situation as a game to push their own agenda, making Komaru defeat the Warriors of Hope and limiting her abilities/upsetting her trust with Toko in order to build up hope and despair. Finally, significant remnant of despair content that actually uses hope/despair as more than nihilistic window dressing
She even made me really like Kotoko. I thought she was annoying outside some funny antics especially early on, but chapter 5 suddenly established her the as 2nd place Warrior of Hope. Her being the most devoted to Monaca and sucking up to her, just for the superficiality of their relationship to come crashing down and her do a 180 instantly was great. Having her as a reluctant ally who'd stab you in the back first chance she gets was a fun dynamic. As the most spiteful and sadistic of the bunch, it's also hilarious to watch her viciously go off on Monaca. It was definitely a good decision to have her "spared" and come back as the representation for the children.

I don’t necessarily have a favorite character in the Danganronpa series. Most of them are good, others are in the middle, and some just become bad in one chapter but was good before. Wanna know a character I despise the most?

jk I know it's Ruruka. Honestly, as hateable as she may be, I think she should've lived so that she can be incarcarated and made to face her penance. Killing her feels like a cheap way to clean up the roster, especially since it essentially puts the trio with Seiko and Izayoi in the grave and gone.

Kaede is such a great Protag and honestly I wish we could have played more with her, like imagine playing the first chapters as both Kaede and Shuichi (Free Time is Kaede alone getting closer to her classmates, Investigations are both working together and Class Trials are handled by Shuichi.)
Then in the second to last Trial, Kaede has already to stay positive, but all the deaths did a number on her and when Shuichi told her about the secret room his discovered, she made the plan to kill the Mastermind.
Kaede is then executed, and Shuichi had to do the last Chapter without her (also a stupid mistake someone made in that Game would have been more excusable)

Trials are a bit tough to do, especially since I'd rather talk about what the characters do within those trials instead of the case itself. But if you're curious, my favorite is V3 Case 1 and my least favorite is V3 Case 4.
Any particular reason for case 4? Personally it’s since *kokichi* is just horrible. Not like a bad person, but the way the game favors him so much
@@carjis Almost everyone in that case are either an idiot or a prick. Kokichi becomes more and more of a desperate scumbag who complicates everyting when the payoff to his actions are not even worh it.
Miu's murder plot is the stupidest and worst one in the entire series due to how obvious the clues are pointing to her being the schemer. It's so bad, it doesn't even work since she picked to kill Kokichi whom she somehow thought wouldn't turn everything against her.
Maki is an arrogant prick as always.
Shuichi "I'm more assertive now" Saihara just stood there silently while Gonta gets verbally assaulted. Didn't even try to at least tell Kokichi and Kaito to shut up and let him think. Kaito may be in the wrong, but at least he actually faced consequences for it. Shuichi just gets away with being an underdeveloped paperweight.
The case is so bad I can't even feel sad for Gonta. Just angry at the other characters for making the experience regressive and unpleasant.
The only niche part I like is how Himiko didn't know Gonta is left-handed. Also Gonta's AI being one of the cutest things.
Kaito is voiced by Kamina so it's fitting he's in that archetype.

If you don’t like Kodaka’s writing, there is literally no reason to play these games. The twistiness and the reveals and the weird sense of humor - all of which are deployed at the character level, the individual chapter/case level, and the overarching narrative level - are the entire point of the thing. Use your limited time to play something you’d enjoy far more!
Just because a form of writing is based on the author's touch, doesn't mean it's free from criticism. There are times where Kodaka's writing hit the mark and when it didn't. There's a right way to write crass characters (Kazuichi, Miu, Genocide Jill) and wrong ways to do it (Teruteru, Mikan, Kotoko). Just like how there are right and wrong ways to do shocking plot twists.
I know those flaws do come with a person's limited vision of writing, but that's all the more reason not to treat their work as infalliable. It's fine to understand their strenghts and weaknesses and how some things can be done better.
I have my gripes with the series, but I'm still glad I sat through it because of how interesting the ideas are despite its less than perfect execution.
@@CountShaman I was more specifically responding to how you complain of the series using "sporadic plot twists" to create "gimmicky storytelling." If the visuals examples you use to indicate twists/gimmicks are negative things to you, it definitely seems like you're fundamentally at odds with the entire point of the series and how it's written. The twists/reveals used at every level (from character backgrounds on up to the overarching narrative), the notion of trying to defy standard expectations for Japanese media - that's not a gimmick, that's The Whole Point. And when you add that together with your stated distaste for the DR1 mastermind - arguably the most inescapably prolific character in the series, and definitely the most popular one - I can't help but come to the conclusion that your needs would be better served by something else. We all have such limited time - why would anyone want to waste any of their time on something that contains so much they don't like? There's way too much media for us to consume it in our lifetime. So there's undoubtedly other media that would speak to you far better.
I'm still inclined to argue against the notion that Kotoko and Mikan are bad characters/writing, though. I find a lot to admire in their tragic backstories and how those are implied to have warped them. The Warriors of Hope all have tragic backstories, but Kototko's just might be the worst one, and they aren't afraid to use that to both drive her more sinister actions or ultimately fuel her face-turn near the end. And Mikan Tsumiki - via both her implicit backstory and her multiple scenes of tumbling/falling - serves as a nice commentary on/rebuke of the concept of "fanservice," which I think is cool. I dig how they deny the audience that kind of thing, because it does get so gross so often. (It's also sadly ironic, given that DR still falls into the trap of providing that kind of "fanservice" via other characters on more than one occasion :( ).
@@RappingNinja Here's the thing; I'm not against the fundemental concept of Junko's actions. I even bought it just fine back in DR1, 2 and UDG because of how mysterious it all is. But it's not until the DR3 anime that I'm convinced that the series isn't as clever as it thinks it is because of how many ideas were dumbed down from these games. It's hard to look back at Junko and appreciate her after DR3 shows that she's just an asshole who gets what she wants without having to try. I get the unrealisticness is on purpose, but it's still very diminishing towards the story's credibility.
Kaede did the whole subverting expectations in Japanese media better because she's not just the idea of a decoy protag, she's also the story of the decoy protag. The buildup and chemistry made the twist more predictable, but also more timeless and profound.
My gripe towards the core story of hope's peak wasn't its idea, it's the substance. It's not an immediate distaste, it was a slow burn. That's why I still had some passion for it and I didn't think I "wasted my time". I don't hate the series for what it set out to do. I hate when it trips on the finish line or when it distracts itself with needless stuff in between.
Plus, I'm doing DR month to get all my necessary thoughts on the series out anyway, so it's not gonna be a long term thing.
@@CountShaman Yeah, I’ve encountered a decent amount of the Danganronpa fandom that thinks that DR3 kinda ruined Junko for them.
Although to be fair DR3 was primarily written by people other than Kodaka. Yeah he still supervised them, but I feel like him not being “hands on” enough with writing DR3 (and busy with V3) messed with the whole story in the long run.

HMS: Like her, like him(TAKA SHOULD HAVE LIIIIIIIIIVED), Snooze-fest, favorite protag, haven't seen the anime(probably won't given its reception), see the last one, interesting until incest is wincest, amazing design, but not very memorable otherwise.
1: I absolutely ADORE Kaede, and personally, if she was the protag and Shuichi was the fakeout, V3 would be way better in my eyes.
Edit: I changed my mind on Sonia, I actually like her now.
