Canned Heat helped revive Blues greats like Gatemouth, John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins and several more. Hite was a Blues Aficionado as was Vestine, They searched the country side for blues albums and players. Bob had a massive record collection that would humble the best of them. I had the great fortune to catch Gate perform and during one of his shows he was on a break and just hanging out in the hallway of the college he was playing at, all by himself, so i said," what the hell i'm a fan, a harp player and blues lover, I have to talk to him!". So i just walked up to him and said hi, how's the show going tonight? Well we talked for 15 minutes and he was the most humble, supportive, and kindest person. He finally looked up at his watch and said, whoa, i have to get back on stage. He signed a poster i had pulled off the wall and said thanks for coming to the show. He played mandolin, guitar and harp that night. Such a wonderful memory in my life.

Poor Canned Heat. So good of them to use their fame to bring an American great to us all. Poor Gate was not used to having to actually wave off a Blues pickup band. :) But they followed despite their massive fame at that time. As good as the music is? Half of Gate's magic was in the audience's relationship. Which is not here in this video. Lord, I do miss him.
Dude had an ego problem. Tells one of the biggest bands at the time to be quiet so he can bring them in with some rudimentary harp licks… he insisted on being the frontman of a band known for intentionally not having a frontman. Not impressed by this one.
I had the honor to get to know Gate from the mid 80' till he passed. He always told me he thought music could heal and bring people together unlike anything else. He let me walk Him out on stage on his last New York gig at BB King's place and told the crowd how much He appreciated me driving from North Carolina to be with Him. I have never been so honored. He will always be The Man!!

About 30 years ago I was in a record store and I came across a CD of Gatemouth. I had no idea who he was or what kind of music he made. I just thought I'd buy it and check it out. I'm glad I did.
Saw him live in Houston. Unforgettable. Such a wonderful showman. He played every instrument and all like a maestro. An East Texas treasure. Heat must have been intimidated.
These Black Texas blues players sure have derp roots in Texas. They never let prejudice keep them from being the stars they are... deep in the heart if Texas. Very appreciated by all.
Yes you can. If you had practiced for 20min everyday since writing this you’d be this good! What he’s playing is not very difficult, it just takes practice.
@@norfolknwhey4787 It's been 4 years since my post and I never stopped practicing. My only question while playing with other musicians is "what key are we in?" before the song begins. It is no longer a challenge to listen to music on the radio, test a couple of keys and then simply play along. My wife has always loved to hear me play,
Clarence Gatemouth Brown on the harmonica, it's a pro ! And with Canned Heat, nothing to throw. Thanks ! Clarence Gatemouth Brown à l'harmonica, c'est un pro ! Et avec Canned Heat, rien à jeter. Merci !
Got to sing with and share the stage with Clarence back in the 90s, he let ME sing Mojo!.... sad that he faced such a sad end; such an incredible musician and genuinely nice man.
I agree. One of the nicest dudes I ever met. Classy and incredibly talented. I'm unfamiliar with his demise and I don't think I want to know, I'd rather remember him as he was when I was fortunate enough to hear him play and hang out with him and his posse for awhile.
“Gatemouth” was an amazing musician, he truly rocked every instrument he touched not anyone left like him now. Never got his due, not just a blues man he could play any kind of American music.

I met Gate in Saskatchewan yeats ago. Would love to touch base with you and pick your brain on a few things I never got the chance to ask Gate about.
Canned Heat have always earned the respect and support of the best blues musicians.
Awesome blues always loved canned heat especially the album Hooker and Heat when I that age. Started me on life long love of the blues
They certainly did with the great Gatemouth. What a music moment.
It was the critics that never gave them their due! They did as much for the blues as any of the British artists did!
I had the privilege of seeing him many times, but never knew he played harp. Once caught him playing drums, too…one of the true greats, Mr. Gate!
Now this is real music that feeds the heart and soul.
