    There's a cool Beastman character in the AoS novel "Black Pyramid", which actually manages to turn that single Beastman from "evil monster" into "maybe understandable antagonist?"
    His name is Soul Eater (I think) and he's an albino Beastman, who, well, has somehow managed to consume souls for Slaanesh. That gives him the very unique and almost humorous power of hearing the voices of some of the souls he ate, who quite literally guide him and discuss strategies to keep him alive, because they don't want to go to Nagash, haha. The funny thing about the whole "Nobody cares about the Beastmen, not even GWS" bit is that Beastmen were quite literally the unwanted offspring of another tabletop setting: RuneQuest. Without getting into too much detail (because if there's one thing RQ doesn't lack, it's overwhelming amounts of detail), RuneQuest is an early fantasy tabletop game from the late 1970s set in the world of Glorantha, which is very loosely based on real-world mythologies. Warhammer itself draws its Chaos Gods from RuneQuest in a fairly indirect way, as the setting features its own trio of explicitly named Chaos Gods. The entire thing reads like a drug trip; seriously, every other fantasy setting other than Caves of Qud seems tame compared to what goes down in Glorantha's countless universes. One of the most notorious antagonists in Glorantha is a race of goatmen called the Broo. From what I've read and gleaned from talking to tabletop veterans, the Broo were a peaceful race until their patron goddess (Thed) was violated by her husband (Ragnalgar), after which she became the Chaos Goddess of R*pe. No, really. Her followers were soon gifted with the ability to impregnate just about anything that exists - sentient or not - and these offspring spring forth from their 'carriers' in much the same manner as a Chestburster from the Alien series. When they're not fighting each other, the Broo spend much of their time putting their unique gifts to use - Slaanesh would love these guys. Because most Broo live in the countryside, they tend to saddle up with goats, deer, and other wildlife. As a result, most of them take the form of... well, beastly men. There do exist peaceful (or at least, not completely sex-crazed) Broo who were raised in more civil societies, which is another facet of the "people are shaped by their surroundings" theme that you see crop up in more cynical IPs like Warhammer.
    Now where does this all tie into Warhammer's Beastmen? Well, Games Workshop distributed the first run of RuneQuest back in 1978, and Citadel made some Broo goatman minis to go along with it. Legend has it that at some point, GWS had a falling out with Chaosium, the studio of RuneQuest/Glorantha creator Greg Stafford. GWS now had a bunch of goatboy figurines sitting in their warehouses, with no idea what to do with them. Then a bright idea came to mind: why not repurpose these Broo into a race in our own setting?
    And thus, the Beastmen were born. Bastards from the beginning, and bastards until the end. At least they don't go around sexing every single thing in sight in Warhammer.

    I always thought the reason the Chaos Gods didn't really favor the beastmen was cause they didn't need to. Almost every other faction Chaos has, chose to join Chaos. The only three I can think of that didn't are Demons (No shit), Skaven (Who have their own personal Chaos God), and beastmen. The Chaos Gods don't need to tempt them because they're damned from the moment they are born and are slaves in all but name. If they were less completely evil, it be really sad.

      Kinda...but then that brings into question why griffons, creatures born of Chaos and the warp are somehow ok, heck they are highly regarded as noble beasts within the Empire, ironically depicted as symbols of order and authority. So why do griffons or even their demi-griffon cousins get a free pass, being totally not evil if not seen as inherently 'good' creatures yet beastmen are completely damned?

    • @yegkingler
      @yegkingler 2 года назад +83

      @@navilluscire2567 there isn't an in-game explanation, so this gonna be purely my own thoughts, but I am using lore based on old WFB lore for this theroy. The winds of magic, and by extension the mortal realms, are made of purified chaos. This is confirmed. The old ones had devices that could turn chaos from hell juice to useful juice that wasn't quite as volatile. But the winds of magic are still quite capable of mutating people, flora, and of course fauna. Which why things like gryff beasts can exist but not be evil. It also could be the same case as the dragons, who are older then the winds of magic, and they have just always existed. So there's possible two explanations.

    • @KaiserAfini
      @KaiserAfini 2 года назад +2

      They have no higher hopes or like to plan, so they do not please Tzeentch. They do not commit to honor or take trophies, so Khorne cares not for them. They despoil beauty and do not seek perfection, so Slaanesh finds them unattractive. They do not spread pestilence or cling to life, so Nurgle is unimpressed. Their lifestyle is so primal, so predictable and unimaginative that the gods simply find nothing of interest.

In the way that those stories you heard growing up of things in the woods that are myths, up until your entire village is slain after the local hunter delves too deep in to the woods one day and awakens the local brayherd.
    And thats just one of the many potential lores of the Beastmen, as nobody in AOS can agree on where they came from.

    Okay, but when are you gonna talk about the best men in Warhammer? *The Lizardmen.*
    Half-kidding, and half-seriousness aside, it’s kinda funny how the ironically the Beastmen being a joke for much of TWII was pretty lore accurate.
    Also ironic and sad that they are one of the closest embodiments of Chaos, but even the Chaos Gods are largely ambivalent to them.
    I dunno, I think the Beastmen prolly represent Chaos Undivided even more than the Warriors Of Chaos. Plus, they are more fleshed out than the poor Fimir.

    Although p soon I'll probably have a force of them to play in 40k because I'm just gonna kitbash some genestealers with gors to make caprigors and the warherd will come to the 41st millennium
    Edit: Tbh since in their own battle tome it talks about how they hate and fear the chaos gods and really do their own chaosy thing i feel like they should be a destruction army just because that makes sense
    Yeah their actions support chaos retroactively but they kill and raid chaos at the same rate as anyone else, slaves to darkness rescinded their no raiding privileges when they started farming. Plus it would let us use kragnos as himself instead of as a proxy for a shaggoth

    The way I figured it, there was once a guy in some bronze age tribe who was kind of goat-ish. He was the son of a goat herd, he looked looked kind of goat-ish (in a normal human way) and he was stubborn and ornery like a goat. Naturally people picked on him constantly calling him "Goat", "Goatman", "Goaty mc Goaterson" and things to that effect. Eventually he had it and since he was a low-end wizard, he ended up stumbling into the paws of the Chaos Gods. They gave him a magical power with which to have his vengeance. In short, he could turn people into actual Goat-men. And it worked, they also went nuts and his village was killed by bitter feral Goatmen.

    • @navilluscire2567
      @navilluscire2567 2 года назад +4

      My own theory is that the beastmen of Fantasy NoT-Europe i.e. the Old World were once WAAAAAY more neutral and where an integral part of the early human tribes that existed throughout that continent, probably even seen as gods or spirits themselves since the humans of these tribes were A LOT more connected with nature and had strong traditions of druids. (basically they were the most like the wood-elves, long before they even existed!) But then came the more warlike, aggressive tribes of men from over the World's Edge mountains from the lands now known as the Badlands today. (presumably being pushed out from their old home by severe natural disasters) These warlike tribes in turn steadily pushed out or even forcefully assimilate the original inhabitants, along with the more agreeable beastmen being killed in mass (were more resistant to the invaders), further and further they pushed them to the edges of the ancient woods while simultaneously Chopping the trees down to make way for early agriculture and even their herds of animals. Over time the descendants of the invaders retroactively justified the seizing of the indigenous, druidic tribes' lands which they, the old inhabitants had carefully sought to live in harmony with nature for countless generations only for much of it being torn down to make way for farms and ranches by claiming noble intentions. (besides just wanting to take other people's stuff) As for the beastmen of old they were bit by bit demonized, cast as nothing more than mindless, voracious monsters and so they and their ancestors (the first invaders) were perfectly justified in their slaughter and displacement. In desperation and nearing extinction the survivors of these massacres *pleaded to be heard, by anyone at this point,* to be saved from their grim fates. Then it happened...the Chaos gods answered their prayers...atleast in some twisted ways, ironically in saving them from physical death their souls became forfeited to these Ruinous Powers, 'saved' them they did, but at a most terrible cost.
      *"And so the modern beastmen that still haunt many of the remaining ancient wood lands of the Old World till this today were 'born'". "Ever bitter about their wretched plight, and harboring a DEEP, dark angry passed through countless generations for men and their towns, farms and cities, that they scarcely even remember the (understandable) reasons why". (even their once rich, long, LONG memory of oral tradition withered and decayed)*
      Also it nicely parallels the history of demonizing of older pagan deities or practices by Christians such as the popular depiction of the "devil" throughout media being that of a goat-like monster which is based on figures like the popular satyr god, Pan from Roman religion along with other animalistic deities. This also brings up topics like the stealing of other people's homes and lands, including the old beastmen through aggressive colonization along with the retroactive justifications for such seizures in the first place. (gotta make ourselves and our descendants look good, noble, and especially, totally justified right?)

Was a nice campaign that played very different from others as you relied entirely on hit&run and were very vulnerable throughout most of your campaign; and around turn 90 or so, when you finally did reach a state where your armies finally became unstoppable it was cathartic rolling that deathball over the Dwarves and completing your long campaign goals.
      back then they were a couple small mods away from greatness; now they're just another steamroll faction. (which is a bit odd when playing Beastmen of all races)
      Not to say the rework was all bad though; they did a lot of good things; the unit caps/progression system are great, as is the new research tree (though I wish they'd kept the "-5% research speed per unlocked tech thing, especially with how strong the techs get)
      What isn't particularly good is 1. How easy it is to raze a settlement and then encamp. (literally no trade-off for destroying a settlement and being immune to retaliation) 2. Encamp at 10% movement. (you can damn near move at max speed while still going into encamp stance every turn) 3. No army upkeep. (no risk of going bankrupt means there's zero pressure to attack anyone; you can just chill indefinitely until a target presents itself) 4. Malagor got a little bit *too* overpowered. @@Predator20357 Also, Mongols were not really a horde faction in the sense it is in Warhammer, generally speaking, Steppe peoples were nomadic... but only in limited way. Their nomad lifestyle was a direct result of the conditions they were living and was something they used in order to maximise pastures.
      Steppe nomads were not aimlessly wandering anywhere without any settlements. Their migrations were limited to specific territory that they considered to be their pastures and were doing those migrations periodically. Reason for those migrations was pretty simple: to let the grass their herds are grazing to grow back. Also, they had cities and stuff, it is just those cities were much more.. fluid than outside the steppe. But they were cities and settlements on thier own and not glorified military outposts.
      People of the Steppe were having civilizations, their entire cultures were not centred around military armies.
      (In Total War system normal factions that hold only one region in a province, but they can move their entire settlements to another region in the same province to avoid overgrazing penalty would be closer to irl Steppe people than current horde system)

The difference is, those are rules to which everyone in the group has input and to which everyone must agree before they are put in place. And they certainly wouldn't be constantly fighting each other over status, submitting to the authority of whoever's the best fighter or be content as mere pawns of a higher power.

      No, we don't really need to know where they come from, there's evidence for a few theories (not all of which are pleasant) and the mystery of where they come from is a good thing, it adds to any horror aspects they have. No need to answer a lore question that doesn't need to be answered. Plus, if there's gonna be any new beastmen models it's gotta be updated chariots, heroes, centigors, and maybe a new monster or two. maybe the jabberslythe and cockatrice too so they won't be resin.

    I don't play tabletop. But Bretonnia man. Something about knights. I guess its annoying how going outside their borders they can be full of it and a lil pompous. Look all I'm saying is not being able to be taken by choas is a pretty ez win. Powers, some form of wealth if knighted. All at the low cost of drinking a E-girls bathwater. The way they make it sound The Witcher 3 2nd dlc blood and wine, made it feel alive in a way.

    As a fellow type 1 that also builds models (historical not warhammer) but played Beastmen in Total War, this video hits home.

    The faction thats main drive is being angsty that they aren't smart enough to make a society actualy work really explains some of the players I've met back in the day kek

    "Unless Gotrek is in the way," applies to literally any hero unit ever except maybe Sigvald who's got a gimmick going for him.

    They're my favorite faction as far as lore, art, and place in the setting goes. But playing them has always been rough.
