    Great video Culgan! I also wanted to share that “Tir” more commonly known as “Tyr, the sky god” is also the name of the 17th rune of the Germanic Futhark runic alphabet in real life and represents the letter “T”. It’s essentially the “Rune of the Warrior” and McDohl expresses that theme to a “T”. Thank You for sharing your extensive knowledge of the Suikoverse as its main five games are amongst my favorite of all time! I look forward to what you’ve got in store next and now I’m going to subscribe 🤩

    The amount of depth in these games... it took decades to uncover this, but the Suikosource community found that the RNG in the first game isn't R at all. It uses actions taken in combat to determine drops, so it's possible to learn specific orders of things to do in a fight to force the drops you want! What a crazy amount of dedication it must have taken to even notice that.

      Same! I remember my first couple of playthroughs when I was a little kid, I didn't get all 108 SoD. I didn't like Gremio much at first, but when he died I really started to miss him and wanted him back. Then I think on my 3rd or 4th playthrough I managed to get all SoD. I had no idea he could be resurrected. I was so excited that I put Gremio straight into my party for the final boss.

    Really good information :D, I never understood the decision of not using a fixed name on the suikoden series, I believe that having a fixed name for the characters helps to that bond you create with them playing the game

    • @CulganValya
      @CulganValya  4 месяца назад +1

      I agree, It really helps create a bond between you and the character. Murayama always liked the silent protagonist style so that you could project yourself into the character and interpret the character and story in your own way though. I guess that's why he decided to not go with a fixed name. But it seems clear that the majority of fans prefer fixed names on the protags in the series.

      But on the other hand, a nameless hero tailors the experience more closely to you, yourself, allowing yourself to feel as if you're merely stepping into a blank slate role and insert your own feelings. So I find both methods equally valid.

    Did you in suikoden 2 there is a phenomenon(bug) where when you recruit a character playable in a party, he/she is already at lv99 😅😅
    I always get a lv99 george, hoi and mazus 😅😅 i dont know how it happens though

    • @CulganValya
      @CulganValya  Месяц назад

      I did! It can also happen to Pesmerga and L.C.Chan. It's a fun bug the first few times it happens, but it also removes the purpose and satisfaction of using them and levelling them up.

    • @CulganValya
      @CulganValya  5 месяцев назад +1

      Suikoden Tierkreis: Hoshikuzu no Shiro (Stardust Castle) is a different game from the NDS game. It was a visual novel prequel to Tierkreis that released only for mobile phone in Japan. It followed the story of The Nameless Hero(the father of the main character from Tierkreis on the NDS)

    Kinda weird that western fans made Laszlo out of Raszro, but never figured that Tir is actually supposed to be the German name Til (or Till)

    • @CulganValya
      @CulganValya  Месяц назад

      I think people were just happy to take the Japanese pronunciation of Tyiru, and drop the u at the end. Tir sounds a lot better than Til.

    • @pytzhan
      @pytzhan Месяц назад

      @@CulganValya Thanks for the reply, Culgan, but I disagree. You just got used to Tir I guess. I am not tryin' to proof anything. Just sayin' that Till is an actual first name, and Tir by any chance maybe a Persian family name. As well as the german influence can be found in so many other names in the game ("Großer Fluss", Zexen = Sachsen, even Teo McDohls forename itself). And that the pronunciation of "L" and "R" are kind of a train wreck in Japanese as well is common knowledge, right? Happy to have found you amazing channel - not sure how I could've d not know about it before.

    • @CulganValya
      @CulganValya  Месяц назад

      @@pytzhan It's all good to disagree. For me, I just prefer the pronunciation of Tir. Tir McDohl sounds better to me than Til McDohl. He was also given the name of Louie in a 2009 manga called The Succeed Crest, but that name never caught on with people either.
      The name Tir could also come from Welsh, where it means earth, or Irish, where it means land. Both Celtic languages and nations. The name McDohl could also be directly translated from Japanese as McDoll, which is a surname of Celtic (Scottish) origin.
      We could also translate Tyiru as Tyr, from Norse mythology.
      As you said, R and L can be tricky to translate rom Japanese.
      There's a number of ways that it can be translated, and we don't know which or how it was intended, so all we can do is interpret.
      If you prefer Til, use Til. If someone prefers Tir, they can use Tir. If someone prefer Louie, they can use Louie. Nobody is correct, nobody is wrong.
      None of them are canon anyway, the names came from supplemental material, and the protagonists have no official names.
      They borrowed from all sorts of countries, histories and mythologies when putting things together in the game, so many things can be interpreted in multiple ways.

    • @pytzhan
      @pytzhan Месяц назад

      @@CulganValya Sure, you are absolutely right. I didn't wanna start an argument about this. I was just saying what is most plausible to me. Also considering that ティル is the transcription for basically everyone called Till. I just thought it is funny because Till isn't really a common name in the US. So I was guessing that is how Tir became a thing. And you are right. It's not canon anyway. Keep the good content coming, Culgan! Best wishes from Germany

    I have to say that when it comes to the name for the protagonist of the fifth game, in my opinion none of the "canon" names truly fit him. Not like Tir or Riou (yes, there's an u in his name). I just can't decide which I prefer of Faroush or Freyjadour. Most of the time, I prefer the first one, since it makes me think of their parents. The second one is just so...fluffy.

    • @CulganValya
      @CulganValya  4 месяца назад +1

      I always use Freyjadour. I quite like the name Faroush, but I didn't find out about that name until I had already done two playthroughs, and by that point Freyjadour had stuck with me and grew on me a lot. I think the Faroush name is meant to be more of a blending of his parents names, but Freyjadour just sounds better to me.

    ...but, Suikoden Stardust Castle its not the last entry in the series? Like I openly admit, I never heard of it^^
    But the last entry is Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki, which came out in 2012 for the PSP. ..its also incredible bad for a Suikoden game, and okay for an rpg. But well, just thought I let you know.
    The game also btw has a wonderful fan translation. (its just to bad that the game itself.. well, I already said, I think it sucks.)

    • @CulganValya
      @CulganValya  4 месяца назад +2

      I think you may have misheard my pronunciation of "Lost" as "Last". "The lost entry in the series". Lost, because it was forgotten about and most people never knew it existed.
      I've played Tsumugareshi Hyakunen no Toki, and it's not a good game. I thought it sucked. By far the worst Suikoden game.
