No calculation is necessary, if the diagonal of the vehicle corresponds to the length of the rectangle of the parking space then your vehicle will be able to park on this space.

As a Parisian spending 3 months in California, I once rented a car and did this trick in dowtown Palo Alto. Only to come back 30 minutes later with the owner of the car in front of mine and a police officer, both mystified and horrified as to how a car had been able to fit in such kind of spot. I was close to get a ticket, until they realized I was French, and I showed them how to get in and out of a tight parking spot without touching the cars in front and behind me. This was before in the 90's, before we had rear cameras.

I was in Paris years ago and saw this many times. It seemed that when the cars were parked on level ground they were left in neutral gear and without parking brake. That way they could be gently pushed by the cars entering or exiting the parking spot. The parked cars could not go far because there was always a car parked close either in front or rear.

Тоже слышал, что в Европе оставляют машины на нейтральной передаче, чтобы специально их толкали в случае чего
Я был в шоке, что всем плевать на повреждения машины!

No you do put the parking brake to prevent the car from rolling on its own, you just don't want to crank it too hard so the car will still move if pushed hard enough.

We do something similar in my country when there's no free parking space an a car would block someone else. The car is left with the parking brake disengaged, but others will push the car by hand if needed, which prevents causing damage.

That's how people park in downtown Madrid too. I call it parking by ear because most drivers gently ( or not so gently) hit the cars as they shunt back and forth. It's much worse when you park normally and come back to find two drivers have parked too close and you lack the skills to get out gracefully.

Also, I love that the next video in my recommendations is the "Parking disaster in Dortmund" where the woman doesn't manage to park her car in a spot twice the lenght of her car

When i was in Paris 30 years ago the handbrakes were left off apart from the end cars and they just got gently shunted out of the way by the new arrival. Things have moved on. That was seriously impressive.

Leaving a car in neutral with the parking brake off is common in Thailand in parking lots where if there is room, people will park at right angles directly in front of you So blocking not only you but the cars to the left and right of you as well. It's accepted practice. Even pickup trucks park like that - you just have to push them out of the way. Not always easy because there could be several bumper to bumper, meaning you have to move them all, and not just a few inches or cm, but enough to make a space for your car to pull out.

For those who criticize the touches, no we would not like them on our car but the whole inner ring of Paris is a hell to park in you. This space was a spot to park no matter what otherwise you can spend the day trying to find a bigger proper one. So eventually tolerance is needed all the more that he made a hell of a good job here.
