They just reverse until they hear a loud sound and they’re parked. Pull this stunt in any other part of France and people will get really angry.

As a Parisian spending 3 months in California, I once rented a car and did this trick in dowtown Palo Alto. Only to come back 30 minutes later with the owner of the car in front of mine and a police officer, both mystified and horrified as to how a car had been able to fit in such kind of spot. I was close to get a ticket, until they realized I was French, and I showed them how to get in and out of a tight parking spot without touching the cars in front and behind me. This was before in the 90's, before we had rear cameras.
I've never felt comfortable enough to try anything close to that with a car that I own and am used to, let alone with a rental or one with which I'm completely unfamiliar! That is some insane talent and spatial awareness skills!!

I worked in a very popular hospital and our parking was under construction for a whole year. I learned how to parallel park on steroids, micro maneuvering my car into the tightest spaces possible. My friends shuddered whenever they saw my car parked in cramped spots.
Reminds me of parallel parking in Colombia. Add the mountains, parking at a slope, using a stick-shift car. Now that I live in the US, I don't know how I ever drove in Colombia lol, and somehow here in the US people have the biggest gaps in front of them, on plain field, no mountains (where I live), and automatic cars with rear cameras and still struggle.

In Germany, you're out a lot of money, if you so much as glance at someone's car the wrong way. It's absolutely ridiculous, but them's the law. If the other person decides to have the whole part repainted or replaced because of a tiny scratch or dent... you're liable. Just not worth the risk.

I did that once during my first year of getting my driver’s license. I did a lot of the forward-backward and moved inch by inch just to fit into a tiny spot on the street. Not gonna lie it actually felt quite good after I parked perfectly, despite how long I spent on it. Yet, now as an “experienced” driver, I give up on tiny spots and keep circling around for a bigger spot, lol!

Nah, i really thought parking was bad in Ireland. Nothing even comes close. That absolute stunt of a parking we just witnessed would not even top the #1 parker in the country. I even try this, and let me tell you i'm taking the bumpers, sides and everything off the car before i'm able to even take the ignition out lmao.
It helps tremendously if the corners of the car are quite rounded off. If the diagonal length can make it with two fingers to spare, then the rest is easy.
This reminds me of the time when I had to do lateral parking's after coming from work, a couple of times I had no choice and had very limited space like in this situation, with sensors it's quick work but without I had to get out of the vehicle a couple of times to be sure, not having a parking spot it's hard in the city
The thing about such parking is when I do this occasionally, I almost always realize that there is a much wider parking space even closer to where I want to go.
I remember my mother having a small accident with a woman that just came from her holiday in France, the woman complained complained "Oh its just a little scratch, in France nobody is bothered by such a thing" My mother just responded by yelling "ARE WE IN FRANCE?!"

I'm from the UK and have many friends that drive, with various levels of skill, but it must be said that by far and away the most talented is the French guy. One time another friend needed to parallel park in a space similar to one in the video, realised that she had no chance, so went and got him. He did it in two moves. He had never driven that car before in his life.
Getting the initial angle is very important. Amazing of the driver to realize that his initial angle was not optimal. Some would just given up or left it poorly parked with tires outside the parking line.

In france we learn to park or get out of tight places, also "bumpers" exist for this purpose, your car will survive, people act too protective of their cars, I've seen dudes with SUVs refuse to go on the tinest sidewalk to not scratch their car XD car pride is truly something!

What makes me feel impressed is the fact that the driver could calculate perfectly that his/her car would fit in the spot. I'm good at manouvering but I suck when it comes to calculate with a simple glance whether my car would fit or not , that's why I give up many times spots where my co-driver says that the car could fit.

There was a time when a car’s bumpers were used for this purpose of parking. They had Metal bumpers, the modern type plastic painted bumpers are not great when touching other cars 🚗 🚗 during reversing.
it's the reason why the older french cars (idk if the newer have thesee i'm guessing not. but the peughot and renault cars used to have bigger bumpers that were quite bulky and plastic literally made that way for this reason so that your car wouldn't get scratched when parkking or when others were parking
In my country, a small scratch caused by undesired incident will end up with serious quarrel and/or sue. In France, it seems that drivers do not complain if their car get hit as a result of this parking action, because they have understood each other or became accustomed to doing this parking.
Bumpers are there for bumping. If someone need a decoration instead of a bumper he should stay away from cities or crowded places Its just a tool for transportation and a small and little scratch at bumpers doesnt make any real difference for its use. I know a lot will disagree, but i think its better not to be attached too much to an item. At least not when we talk about little scratches.
I remember visiting France in the 70s and watching a car push a vehicle more than a foot to make enough space. Bumpers where metal and substantial back then.

I lived in Paris and worked as a sales rep for 20 years. This very parking technique and satisfying result was my daily routine. Having said that, not all Parisian drivers possess the necessary skill. As to bumping, French people also do not like it. You do it when the other car’s driver is not present and you do your best to bump as gently as possible with the intent to leave no scratch on both bumpers (yours and his).

Good drivers have developed their spatial sense enough to know where the edges of their car are. It may look like voodoo but it's really no different from being able to touch your toes with your eyes closed.
It used to be said that it was considered rude in France to put your hand-brake on, because etiquette required that the next car could be shunted a bit to make space. I'm not sure if that was true: I haven't lived in France.
@BL Dontmatter ofc they'll all have their parking brake engaged. With clutch you lower the torque transmitted to the wheels so when u touch another car it's like a human hand pressing on the body of the car, you can't do that with an automatic cause even if u gently press the gas pedal lots of torque are put onto the wheels which will damage the car paint. Plus clutch pedals are very long and you can be very precise by using both pedals at the same time.
My first time trying parallel parking, it tooks me 10 minutes and I had a space about 1 meter in front and behind my car to the next car parked. This guy pull it off in just 2 minutes with very little space between the cars, so awesome.
Driving instructors in Paris will make you parallel park for hours on end, and they won't let you take your practical test until you can do it perfectly 😅
French: Until you call that thing something else, I'll be using that "bumper". I was in Paris and every car had front and rear bumper dent on it... The German (rental) told me to put car in neutral because that will be less of a damage when they use their car to move yours.....
I was in France a few years back and watched a similar parking incident. This driver was less concerned with bumping, and simply pushed the car behind out of the way. The next car along ended up being shoved out into a junction. Madness, but fun to watch while sitting in the sun outside a cafe.

I can confirm that the French do not argue about minor damage on cars. A then brand-new Citroen C6 cut my lane and I noticed too late and hit it. A Gitanes-smoking man in an expensive suit got out, totally relaxed, we looked at the scratches and dents and he said "Euh, c est rien monsieur, la voiture est encore en marche", shrugged, and got back in.
"Uh, it is nothing sir, the car is still running" What a great story. I wish we could be more relaxed like that. Too many people here are in such a hurry to try and make a buck on something like that. Quick to file a claim or sue.
As a French person, what amazes me the most are the comments of people who seem to think this is amazing.. This was kind of normal, and he didn't even have to take traffic into account. Usually you have to hurry because other drivers are stressing you out.

For those who criticize the touches, no we would not like them on our car but the whole inner ring of Paris is a hell to park in you. If the diagonal length can make it with two fingers to spare, then the rest is easy.
This reminds me of the time when I had to do lateral parking's after coming from work, a couple of times I had no choice and had very limited space like in this situation, with sensors it's quick work but without I had to get out of the vehicle a couple of times to be sure, not having a parking spot it's hard in the city
The thing about such parking is when I do this occasionally, I almost always realize that there is a much wider parking space even closer to where I want to go.
Sadly that’s not the case in paris lol, people have to do this because there’s so few available parking spots.

I'm from the UK and have many friends that drive, with various levels of skill, but it must be said that by far and away the most talented is the French guy. One time another friend needed to parallel park in a space similar to one in the video, realised that she had no chance, so went and got him. He did it in two moves. He had never driven that car before in his life.
Driving is a mad thing in France. Even old people who shouldn't drive are not too dangerous. When it's raining they do break people balls though.

Getting the initial angle is very important. Amazing of the driver to realize that his initial angle was not optimal. Some would just given up or left it poorly parked with tires outside the parking line.

Был я в Париже и видел такие парковки. Там это в порядке вещей. Подавляющее большинство обычных машин(я имею в виду небольшие Рено, Пежо, Ситры, Опеля и прочие (скажем так - не очень дорогие) ) все имеют ссадины и царапины на бамперах, боковинах и т.д. С этим там никто не заморачивается. Некоторые даже могут немного растолкать соседей, если торопятся.

People seem erroneously impressed with this. Not only did he impact both the cars; the decision to park in a tight spot is not a question of your own ability, but of those you're parking between.
In france we learn to park or get out of tight places, also "bumpers" exist for this purpose, your car will survive, people act too protective of their cars, I've seen dudes with SUVs refuse to go on the tinest sidewalk to not scratch their car XD car pride is truly something!
Man if only someone filmed how this legend got out of that spot with the same scenario. For him it would be a walk in the park but for us it would be damn interesting to watch.

What makes me feel impressed is the fact that the driver could calculate perfectly that his/her car would fit in the spot. I'm good at manouvering but I suck when it comes to calculate with a simple glance whether my car would fit or not , that's why I give up many times spots where my co-driver says that the car could fit.

There was a time when a car’s bumpers were used for this purpose of parking. They had Metal bumpers, the modern type plastic painted bumpers are not great when touching other cars 🚗 🚗 during reversing.
@@charm8167 plastic are far better than chrome for this, they leave no scratches (if gentle) and flex slightly, and cheap to replace if needed.
And that's why we call those plastic things on the front and rear of the cars bumpers.

it's the reason why the older french cars (idk if the newer have thesee i'm guessing not. but the peughot and renault cars used to have bigger bumpers that were quite bulky and plastic literally made that way for this reason so that your car wouldn't get scratched when parkking or when others were parking

Bumpers are there for bumping. If someone need a decoration instead of a bumper he should stay away from cities or crowded places Its just a tool for transportation and a small and little scratch at bumpers doesnt make any real difference for its use. I know a lot will disagree, but i think its better not to be attached too much to an item. At least not when we talk about little scratches.
This is another reason why small cars are so common in Europe 😆

I lived in Paris and worked as a sales rep for 20 years. This very parking technique and satisfying result was my daily routine. Having said that, not all Parisian drivers possess the necessary skill.
As to bumping, French people also do not like it. You do it when the other car’s driver is not present and you do your best to bump as gently as possible with the intent to leave no scratch on both bumpers (yours and his).

@BL Dontmatter ofc they'll all have their parking brake engaged. With clutch you lower the torque transmitted to the wheels so when u touch another car it's like a human hand pressing on the body of the car, you can't do that with an automatic cause even if u gently press the gas pedal lots of torque are put onto the wheels which will damage the car paint. Plus clutch pedals are very long and you can be very precise by using both pedals at the same time.
Well I mean, most Europeans still do. Myself as an Italian living in Turin I do this every day with a clutch, not just in France.
My first time trying parallel parking, it tooks me 10 minutes and I had a space about 1 meter in front and behind my car to the next car parked. This guy pull it off in just 2 minutes with very little space between the cars, so awesome.

I was in France a few years back and watched a similar parking incident. This driver was less concerned with bumping, and simply pushed the car behind out of the way. The next car along ended up being shoved out into a junction. Madness, but fun to watch while sitting in the sun outside a cafe.

I can confirm that the French do not argue about minor damage on cars. A then brand-new Citroen C6 cut my lane and I noticed too late and hit it. A Gitanes-smoking man in an expensive suit got out, totally relaxed, we looked at the scratches and dents and he said "Euh, c est rien monsieur, la voiture est encore en marche", shrugged, and got back in.

For those who criticize the touches, no we would not like them on our car but the whole inner ring of Paris is a hell to park in you. This space was a spot to park no matter what otherwise you can spend the day trying to find a bigger proper one. So eventually tolerance is needed all the more that he made a hell of a good job here.
