A modern deployment for Air Force is essentially being locked in, on an Air Force base that’s located in another country. Outside base travel may or may not be allowed depending on world events. Unless you’re in a special warfare AFSC , you will NOT experience anything like Restrepo or Hurt Locker . Imagine an Air Force deployment more like military Office Space… Now Army/Navy/Marines ? That’s a whole different movie . 🤔

Retired CE (HVAC tech) here. I was fortunate and somehow only went on 2 deployments in my 20 year career.
I deployed from Hill AFB (best assignment I had) back in 2000 and went to Eskan Village in Saudi Arabia. They had the best chow hall I ever had.
We landed at around 11 pm and it was about 95 degrees still. That heat just punches you in the face as soon as you step off the plane.
During that time, we had to take a course with EOD (explosive ordinance disposal) and be trained on looking over our vehicles with any tampering or wires exposed from any potential homemade bombs when we took any vehicles off base. I recall seeing an article posted when a car bomb was planted and it killed a couple of British soldiers and they (Saudi’s) apologized saying it was intended for Americans. A holes.
Then, a few more weeks pass and I experienced my 1st threat con (threat condition) Delta when the U.S.S Cole ship was attacked. We had to carry our gas masks everywhere as a just in case type thing but just stayed in our work shops for the most part. Overall, it was a good experience and miss getting my haircut there because they even gave you a neck / shoulder massage after your haircut. It was awesome.

I did both AD and ANG and deployment is either going to be like what he said (in case of federal mission support) or its going to be disaster or other emergency (a state mission). If its federal, its the same as above. If its for an emergency response, let me tell you the differences
      1. You will have a few hours notice. You will get the call and the assembly will be something like "0600 at the unit" the next day. So you have to have everything ready. You will get a letter to give to your employer or school telling them you have been activated. if they give you any flack, have the unit JAG talk to them.
      2. When deployed in an emergency response..there are no work hours. You work as long as you can and get rest when you can. Food might be MREs. It might be a field kitchen. It might be use your government credit card at the waffle house.
      3. You might be sleeping in a hotel. You might be sleeping in a cot in a high school. You might be sleeping in a tent on a tarmac. Remember, whatever way you are sleeping, the Army National Guard will have it worse, so be thankful. BRING A PILLOW. Nice small one you can stash in your bag. You can thank me later.
$. GOOD NEWS, your deployment will likely be 2 weeks to 60 days. It can be six months but if its state mission, its highly unlikely.

What are the odds on me being able to become a loadmaster. I did a lot of research on it and that seems like my dream job! That’s something I would be willing to wait for if I knew it was guaranteed! Should I list all aircrew jobs for my best chances? I scored a 67 a practice asvab at a recruiters office without studying at all.

    • @Celeste-y8h
      @Celeste-y8h 8 месяцев назад +1

Loadmasters are highly sought after jobs. They rarely come available. The Air Force doesn’t let you ‘pick’ a job. You create a job list of 8-10 jobs you would accept and you are assigned a job based on what comes available that’s on your list. You can choose to deny a job that you don’t feel you want BUT they will give you a hard time about it and you can only stay in the delayed entry program (they put everyone in the Air Force in DEP) for so long before you ‘expire’. So every month a job list rolls out and it’s sorta in your recruiter to fight for you to get the best job they can secure you that’s on your list. I’d highly suggest talking to your local recruiter to get a better idea of how this process works. But basically if you list aircrew jobs, you’re more likely to get a contract option for one of those jobs. But really, there’s no bad job in the Air Force

Not to rain on your college plans, but the world has changed and college has become a scam. Unless college is free, it ain't worth it. Don't start your life with an $80,000 millstone around your neck.
My advice to any young person thinking about the military is to take the plunge and enlist. During your first enlistment, if you don't finish a bachelor's degree during your off-duty time, you are probably doing it wrong. If you finish your degree on active duty, using AP credits from high school, service schools and the Community College of the Air Force, those CLEP exams Jody referenced, and classes you can take in your off-duty time, then you can apply to Officer Training School and that commission. If you don't, well, then you show up to college as, say, a seasoned, more serious college junior - with the GI Bill behind you.
Source: Am Cold War Navy veteran, got BA on active duty at the Ed Center Jody describes, got out and went to law school. Have child on active duty in the Air Force now (SSgt with five years). I bought my home when I was 33; she's 23 and just bought her first home.

If you had the documents validated from a company on naces.org, they will work. If not head over to that website and find someone to validate them for you. It usually costs anywhere from $75-125.

They’ve actually slowed down on letting people transfer. I’m actually not too sure on the process, and don’t want to miseducate.
Here’s what I’ve researched though. Application and Transfer Process
To apply for IST, follow the application process below. A complete application requires:
      Transfer request letter
IST Unit Commander Endorsement (signed by unit commander)
      Service Career Brief
Army: Officer Record Brief (ORB) or Enlisted Record Brief (ERB)
      Last five signed performance reports
Monthly counseling and military training/ academic reports can be submitted
      IST Candidate Data Form
      Submission
Submit application using the MyVector. Please submit the FY24 IST Application as follows:
Scan to combine: (1) Service Career Brief, (2), IST Commander Endorsement and (3) last five performance reports into a single PDF file. Name the single PDF file with the following naming convention.
      LASTNAME_FIRSTNAME_IST_OFFICER (or ENLISTED) CURRENT SERVICE
Submit your application for FY24 IST application window between 0800 EST on 26 June 2023 through 1700 EST on 11 July 2023.

I unfortunately quit coast guard bootcamp couldn't hack it at 35, told my recruiter I had history of anxiety, but he told me to deny it so it won't delay my process from joining was out there and was struggling. I got a dd-214 form got a uncharacterized discharge like a neutral discharge. The staff employees from coast guard told me along other 14 recruits that quit bootcamp that it will not affect our employment opportunities in the future, but do you know how true that is? If I want to apply to a government job in the future will I get turned down or not?

I honestly don’t know. I do know they’re going to require you to gather all of your medical records so they can comb through them. Then based off of those, they’ll determine if you’re qualified. I recommend you have your doctor write a letter of why they don’t think you have ADHD or any symptoms, and you have no learning disabilities.

Hi Jody, is it easier to cross train into an intelligence or cyber intelligence job after you are enlisted?
I’m just starting the process of enlisting and have been told that the only jobs available right now are mechanical and electrical. I’m fine with picking jobs from those aptitudes but eventually I know I really want to get work experience in intelligence for my future career plans if I decide not to do a full 20 in the Air Force.

    • @Jodywithawhy
      @Jodywithawhy  Год назад +2

I did it myself and it was pretty easy to get into Intel. However they had a need for it when I was eligible to cross train. For you it will depend on availability of intel jobs or cyber when your cross train eligible. There’s no telling how that will look 3-5 years from now. I hope that helps.

The service members civil relief act can have your interest rates lowered to 6% if they’re not already under that. Besides that, I don’t think there’s too much other assistance, unless you’re married or have dependents. In that case you’d receive a housing allowance.
