    It seems old groupset were made to last..... I have a Shimano RX100 which came with my Schwinn Paramount Series 3 1992, for many years I never changed the chain and the cassette/chainring/jockey wheel pulley set shows significant no wear at all...no shifting problems. That was my only bike back then. Later, I did an upgrade to Shimano 600 Ultegra. Then installed back the RX100, and it works perfectly.

    I did a short tour last September and October. Started with new drivetrain and not long in the front ring started making a skipping noise in certain combinations. Came back to the bike after a break and checked the chain. It was way beyond passing the checker tool. I can only guess it was a fake kmc I probably got off ebay. So I replaced with a new and then it works literally slip on front ring when I would mash. Never had that happen or anything like it. I'm hoping new rings will fix it. It's unnerving. I'm thinking fake chain and trying that awful wolftooth lube did a number on the ring.....buy it didn't really look bad.

      Wax is soo stupid, it only protects ur chain against corrosion. Oil is way better. At the end u want to have a lubed chain. Wax doesnt lube at all. Problem is 90% of the bike rides just dont know how to lube a chain correctly and thats the story why world wide ppl are using stupid wax. So pls dont even start about ur wax story. If u were a real pro u would have noticed the chain is wrong !! look at 3:21 in the vid u can clearly see the text ''Narrow '' , thats a single speed narrow chain. 22 year high end bikemechanic from The Netherlands. thank you boiz

    I've never seen a chain that bad. BTW that particular Park Chain checker has two models with the same part number. I have two CC-2, a really old one and a newer one. The old one doesn't fit in my 12-speed Shimano chains, but the newer one does. When I compared the thickness of the pins, the newer one is thinner.

    In this case, would you say the chain is just not of good quality? I have never seen stretch this bad in shimano or KHS chains that have been on bikes for longer than one year. It would be suprising if this bike with flats has been pushing huge watts up categorized climbs. Just maybe a combo of soft chain metal and the combination of sand and sticky lube making mortar that stays on the chain causing the wear?

    • @SeeYouUpTheRoad
      @SeeYouUpTheRoad  2 месяца назад

      None of this makes sense to me and states as such to the bike owner. But I think you are 100% correct I think an inferior quality chain plus the grinding pace of the wet lube and sand has caused this chain to wear prematurely.

      Yes, of course! Many of the checks I do I do pre-or post video so it not to make the video too long. Also, I have to make sure I look at it once they are clean but consider this. This is a hybrid bike so this customer is not going to want to spend too much money. So only if absolutely necessary after we have replaced the chain and if it slips, will we replace other items. If they are questionable, he doesn’t want to spend the money for new chain rings or new cassette unless absolutely necessary.

    What chain is that?

  • @TAMADrumsLover
    @TAMADrumsLover 2 месяца назад

    the whole problem to start with, is this chain is a single speed chain. If you paused the vid on 3:21 you can clearly see the word NARROW stamped in the link.... the fact is a single speed narrow chain and an 8 speed chain have the same inner en outer dimensions. But this narrow 1speed chain isn't build for derailleur setups so it gets streched this way fast . The mechanic that installed this chain did a bad job. An real 8 speed chain should have been installed as it is designed for diagonal chainline(when u shift up and down the cassette).

      I found another issue. I thought the cassette lock ring was loose because the cogs were loose but the lock ring was at torque spec. It was missing a spacer on the freehub! Which is weird because when I put the space on I only had to do a TINY adjustment to the high limit screw on the rear derailleur and nothing to the front derailleur! This poor guy has been running this bike with the wrong chain and a loose Cassette since the bike was new! No wonder his shifting was compromised!!

    On the general topic of chain life longevity and alternative types of lubes, do you think there is any validity to the research and conclusions of Zero Friction Cycling? I'm just asking, because you're very quick to be completely dismissive of immersive waxing even though, as far as I know, you've never tried it. I'm not advocating that it's the way to go, but maybe you could consider the merits before referring to it as "all that pfaf" or "a complete waste of time" as you did in one of your brevet videos. I don't have to go too far back in your video catalog to find examples of you being equally dismissive of going tubeless and how Silca sealant was total garbage. And now look who's got his tires set up tubeless.
    Obviously you're not going to consider immersive waxing for an unsophisticated cyclist with an inexpensive bike. But someone posting a comment about waxing doesn't give you free license to be discourteous in your response.

    • @SeeYouUpTheRoad
      @SeeYouUpTheRoad  2 месяца назад +1

      Hello Thomas so much to unpack in your comment. Let us begin
      Yes there is solid evidence that waxing your chain increases the life of it and the overall efficiency of the drivetrain. Zero Friction Cycling does great work and he is a swell guy! I am dismissive of immersion because IT IS too my faff for someone like me. I ride too many miles for it to be practical. You have to retreat your chain every what 300km? Which means it will almost never last enough on just ONE of my rides. In fact, on the most recent 600km (May 18) I had to reapply lube at the 400km mark.
      I have been using wax lube -- Squirt lube out of a bottle for over 6 years. Silca Super Secret out of a bottle for the last 2 years. SOOO much easier! Not to mention even Josh says the SS out of the bottle with 2 applications is 95% as effective. So why would I do immersive? Longevity of a chain is not a concern to me. I get very long life out of a chain and my costs as a shop owner for a chain are minimal and no labor since I do the work. Also I haven't replaced a worn cassette in lord knows how long but it's been many many years decades I’d say! Lastly I have never in the life of riding bikes have I ever replaced worn chainrings. I ride on average 10,000 miles per year and climb 1,000,000 feet per year. You would think someone like me would be replacing my entire drivetrain multiple times per year but nope. My chainrings have nice flat teeth and so do my cassettes.
      I replace chains often I keep them clean and drip wax on them (about 30 seconds of time invested) on Fridays before my long rides. Super simple and it works. So what would be the benefit to me of all the faff for immersive? No one will ever feel the marginal gain of the chain being faster lol! Tire selection and tire pressure has far more implications on your speed than chain waxing.
      Let's talk about tubeless shall we -- Silca sealant is still a gooey mess and I will not use it. It reminds me of Elmer’s glue every time I work with it. Yes I am riding tubeless more and more these days. On these long brevets with gravel sections I have been riding 32mm tires. I have ALWAYS said tubeless works great for dirt such as gravel and MTB. I have ALWAYS said tubeless doesn't work on the higher pressures needed for road. My stance has never changed. Try not to make me sound like I am equivocating. With 32mm tires I am running 55-58 psi over long gravel sections on my 400km and 600km and even lower pressure during the overnight rain (10pm -8am) of the 600km. I aired down without a pressure gauge or floor pump but I was probably down in the high 40 to barely 50 psi.
      However, I do need to state this I didn't have a puncture so I still don't know if tubeless would have sealed at 55psi or 50psi as I stated in one of my videos. So the jury is still out whether tubeless will work but the probability is significantly higher to seal at 55psi on 32mm than at 80psi when I was riding 25mm ... it just didn't work! Also I am using Orange Seal because Silca sealant is terrible to work with and you have to pour it into the tire you can't put it through the valve
