I don't believe for a second that Brian is questioning his faith. I say 50/50 he's just another lying preacher.
I used to think that religion had a positive influence on society. I would simply grit my teeth and squint my eyes to get past all the stuff a person is supposed to believe. But I have abandoned all hope for religion. It just provides a way for people to justify the tribe’s malignant attitudes toward outsiders.
“Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.” (Steven Weinberg)
its the Manipulations that being skeptical needs to know the difference being faced. anything else with pure honesty would be hard to track when someone doesn't know what can be harmful , also the out come feels risky being Honest for many being cought in such a tight hole about religion is negative with nothing proven to suport life after death..
1 MAIN PROBLEM I Do not like about Christian practice is puting words in your mouth to get you to understand ! it seems set by practice and hopefully you don't catch it being done even if they don't know they practice it. Seems Faith has something to do with it because faith has no foundation to support anything. edit with Jesus being a carpenter makes one think he has a foundation for our faith. yet, jesus being a carpenter who said heals but his foundaion butters it up niceley. so many thoughts in this its crazy.
I certainly think that religion *can* have a good impact on society, and there are certainly examples where it *has* done, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t also be harmful, and there are certainly examples of this as well.
Plenty of religious people are good people with good intentions, and many of those people are harmless.
You can’t tar every individual with the same brush.

Does religion make you good?
History says nope.
History says YES. Go into any church on Sunday and listen to the songs, adoration, and general attentiveness and devotion.
@@bobgarrett7134 You mean, like going to bars on weekends to listen to live bands, maybe sing along & dance? Yeah, adoration, general attentiveness, and devotion. Your point was?
@@randolphpatterson5061 You go to bars and dance halls to cut some moves and light up the floor, chase babes, or entertain your date. Those are all things that are done to highlight YOU, YOUR enjoyment, and YOUR ego.
You go to Mass for the community worship of God. Kneel to God, sing to God, pray to God, give thanks to God, and to show God he's the most important person in your life. Those are all unselfish things that are done for the love of GOD.
@@bobgarrett7134 Actually, in my case, I'm most often the one on the stage, communing with the community, through our pure enjoyment of each others' company. Your church sounds fun, I've attended many of those, since I've only been an atheist for maybe 35 of my 70 years, and a church or a religion doesn't have some kind of a monopoly on, or an appropriation of, socializing. I don't care what the buybull says, and I don't share your belief that some invisible celestial babysitter is hiding in the clouds, reading our minds and condemning us to a hell he created, because of some random thought that we had while dreaming. If your god were actually REAL, he'd be the biggest jerk of all time. Have a nice day.
@@bobgarrett7134haha, follow those people the rest of the week. You won't find the goodness. Especially if you are able to look into their minds. In my experience religion is not an indicator of goodness just because they play pretend for an hour or several a week. And if you look at the death toll by the religious it grossly evident that religion makes you good. Read the holy texts and they will tell to be not good for god.
"Does Religion Make You Good?" Definitelly nope.
The Caller doesn't seem to understand the null hypothesis.
Don't accept the claim until there is evidence to do so.
He’s overthinking it. Not sure where the 50% thought process is coming from, but from that alone he’s clearly overthinking it - which may be a built-in subconscious safety net from years of indoctrination.
Religion doesn't make you good, it just makes you think you'll go to heaven anyway.
It can make you think you are good, but are really a scoundrel.
King David is a murderer. Paul called Saul, is a murder of Christians. He is afflicted by poor sight. No Man is good. Its not about deeds. You are saved by Faith alone, not by deeds, lest and man boast. We are saved by God's blood. His sacrifice. We acknowledge we are flawed. We need a change of heart. BORN AGAIN. Now a satanist is copying us. They go along to a 13 man baptism. Get a new Name? why do you suppose so many celebs change their names? Can't they hack it with their own names. Cilla White needs to be Cilla black? Some of these name changes are absurd. A boy in my class at school changed his family name. There is no reason for it? He now is very famous and draws pentagrams in Comics. He is one of the creators of the next Deadpool film.
Marvel Jesus? as the promos say.
You either are anti-LIFE. anti-GOD. who is offering you a place in heaven, as a GOD? the bible says it. He is elevating all people who want Jesus. Or you are fighting on earth to remain the same? Look at world history - MURDER, SEX CRIMES, ADDICTIONS, SLAVERY, etc etc... God is offering everyone a solution. Stop trying to justify it all. Accept you are flawed. Accept you can end up in jail? Dodged your taxes? sold something suspect? thought about sex with someone married. we all fall short. SIN is just a MIRROR. to show your flaws. God is not interested if you murder anyone. as all souls are immortal. You only harm yourself. You hang onto your dirty secrets like they were made of Gold. Instead of dropping them and facing your last JUDGE. God is our last judge. your parents judge you, teachers, school friends, lovers, and the paper might print an obituary? then its GOD. you resent being properly judged? a final indignity?

It bugs me a little when people refer to the process of dismantling irrationally held beliefs as "losing faith". Loss implies that which is missing had some value and that you wanted to hold onto it. I didn't lose faith, I discarded garbage ideologies and irrational beliefs.
Do we ask children how they felt finding out that Santa isn't real? Most of what I have heard, is people congratulate their kids for growing up and being "too old to believe in little kid stuff"..
One can lose either favourable or unfavourable things. Losing something doesn't necessarily come with a negative connotation. I'm losing weight. The fats my body has discarded is still a loss to me, a weight loss. Even though the fats have no value that I wanted to hold onto.
I say I "gained clarity."

"And what do you mean typed six times a week" . The OP comment by Islandalex1 literally contains the (short) frase "six times a week".
So this doesn't imply anything about the distribution of these church visits over the week, just that each week they made a total of 6 i.e. be it in a total of 1 day, 2 days, 3 days, 4 days, 5 days or maybe even 6 days, all possible, iow: the total nr of days employed was between 0 and 7.
P.S. And each different week could also have a different distribution.
The purpose of the universe as far as I can tell is chaos.
If the universe had a purpose it would be to create black holes.
"As far as we can tell" is the point. It's fascinating to wonder how little or much of the universe we can actually observe. Although entropy increases in a closed system, it's clear that energy can flow from one object (the sun) to another (the Earth) and provide the means (energy) for assembly to take place.
Brian seems to be a fan of special pleading.
Maybe questioning long held religious beliefs is difficult because it means taking responsibility for one's beliefs, instead of putting the burden on some god.
Religion provides the equivalent of the wife to whom a husband wants to defer everything so he can live a mindless life, "yes dear, ok dear, whatever you say dear...as long as I don't have to think and assume the responsibility of a bad choice please make all my decisions for me."
Well, it’s specifically difficult because people are taught that faith is a necessary part of the Christian belief, and if you question it, then you aren’t having faith. And if you aren’t having faith, then you don’t deserve to go to heaven and live forever among your loved ones. Not only that, but you will be tortured forever if you don’t have that faith. So it has a built in fail safe that shuts down any logical thoughts before they get started.

Female, adjective

17:00 what about all the people that didn't survive? Did the supposedly omniscient, omnipotent, omnibenevolent God decide that they weren't worth saving? Why would I thank such a god?
There is no purpose. You live then you die. If you can improve life for other people in the between that's nice but not required. That's all. Anything else is just your choice to experience but none of it is necessary.
Why is it necessary for us to have a "purpose ". We are born, we live our, and then we die. If we're lucky, we get to have a good time being here. I'm old and I enjoyed my life . No regrets. No freaking purpose.
Well the universe is expanding so technically it is going somewhere.

10:02 Purpose, the way he is talking about it, is bestowed by a mind. The purpose of Earth, according to humans, is to be a home for humans. But if random cosmic death rays suddenly wiped out all life on Earth, what would be its purpose? It wouldn't have one, as far as anyone could tell. What the caller seems, at this point, to be basically driving at is the question of why we are here at all, and not being satisfied with "I don't know; we just are".
But sincerely, "I don't know; we just are" is understandably unsatisfying since it is essentially a non-answer; it is still the best answer because it is the only answer I can honestly give. I don't know for sure that we weren't put here for some reason or by something, but all the evidence I have points to us being the result of plain old run-of-the-mill evolution. We're here because we just are. Just like raccoons and fish and coral and frogs and asteroids and stars and literally everything. If you don't know that birds build nests and you see a bird with a stick in its beak, you can't really assume a purpose without already knowing what it probably is. Sometimes birds just play with sticks; for real, look at corvids. They play with stuff all the time.
Considering that theists often compromise and adjust their religion to suit their own judgement and sensibility religion does not make one a good person. Rather, one is a good person (or not) and then retro fits their religion as the source, while in fact it isn't. It's that person all along.
May or may not, maybe or maybe not, still means "I don't know," then you have yes and no. Always to a "Yes and no question" is three options. Christians have a hard time with this for some reason and I don't know why. Is it ignorance or stupidity or both.
Hell no.
No. Take, for example, the troll @JimCastleberry. His ONLY objection to abusing children is that he thinks God has unaccountably ruled such behavior off limits. He claims there can be no other valid reason to object to it. Does that sound like a person whose moral outlook has been improved by religion? I think not.
Nice strawman of Jim and moral ontology. Why aren’t there 500 messages from QC demanding you provide citations for your accusations?
So, Damon: in the event that it was revealed unto you that God has now decided that humting non-Christians for sport is both fun and righteous, you'd immediately conclude that that was objectively true under your authoritarian concept of objectivity. How could you do otherwise?
@damonkenny3444 I provided quotations, and Jim went silent.
Remember, Jim has repeatedly stated that "Without God, all things are permitted." He has also stated that any reasons to abhor any action that aren't "God makes it so" are 'false delusions'.
@@amtlpaulit's remarkable how people like Jimbo and DonKey are KEEN to commit numerous atrocities, but are only held back because they think that God wouldn't like it and would punish them. That is, their "moral ontology (🤦)" is ENTIRELY transactional - this is not morality, it's obedience and fear.
Like most people, I have no desire to murder and "grape", even if I could 100% get away with it. I don't need a carrot or stick, because I have empathy for others. That is REAL morality, devoid of transaction.

And then he just went crazy-idiot with the forgiveness stuff at the end and the 50% chance crap in the middle. And once he started with all that silliness and got reasonable pushback on it, he immediately stopped being a listener.
Why word "antitheism" is so unknown yet almost everyone describe atheism as such.
People truly don’t know how to think. And I’m convinced most people never have. This show has quite taught me how to think and consider things. Not knowing doesn’t mean it makes it likely that something you have not proven to be so is in fact the case. I don’t think belief in god or whatever is necessarily bad, I think it depends how you use it. I think it might often be stupid and unjustified but not always harmful. But most people just believe cause they were taught too (as I once was). People believe out of fear also.
An "almost atheist", or a theist as they are better known.
Why would an all-powerful being create a process that leads to an endgame to achieve their goals? Why not make their creation complete. If I were god, I'd make the pie ready to eat, not raw where it has to be baked. 😊
Call summary : Hello . There could be a purpose. There could be unicorns. Thanks for calling. .
What did one atheist say to the other…… god this dmv is slow!
His thinking is still religion-based (e.g. _real_ forgiveness) so he may not escape the confines of the Church unless that changes.
This forgiveness thing was embarassing and shows how little christians thing about morality - not at all.
(as they OWN morality as they own logic and OWN The Truth, no need to think or know anything about it)
My standpoint regarding errors, misdeeds, anger, punishment, revenge, ...:
We are all imperfect - and that makes us able to change, to improve.
Then we have the Golden Rule of Empaths, treat others like you want to be treated.
Every one of us makes unintentional errors. No need to get angry about those.
When it is an error that could have been avoided by another behaviour, and avoided the negative effects,
then that should be CLEARLY called out.
When the error-causer would not see that, then drastic actions are appropriate. Scream at your child or even a slap.
IMPORTANT. It must become clear it is because of the child's action that negatively affected you, other people or endangerd the kid itself.
When it is clarified what happened, why it is wrong, and how to do it right, so that next time it does not happen again, and then the normal personal relation pre-error is restored, I am persuaded no kid will be left with permanent damages.
.
When someone takes DELIBERATELY advantage on me, counting on me not thinking it is worth the effort, THERE I am extremely (probably way too) sensitive.
I have ZERO tolerance for people that exploit others.
When people CHANGE their way that that what affects others negatively does not happen again - no problem, the world got better, I can "forgive".
The justification for "punishment" is
- some compensation of the produced damages to others
- to emphasize that such a behaviour is not tolerated, has consequences, and THIS will cause the person to change its behaviour.
- when the danger is too large that this person will continue harming others, when they areeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee a danger to society, then they have to be locked away - to protect the others.
Repeat: the goal is to improve the common well-being.
I wouldn't even consider a behavior being avoided or embraced as being `good` or `bad,` simply because it's believed to be the decree of a god. That's not being `moral,` it's being conditioned and controlled. However, that's not reality anyway. I've yet to meet a Christian who has disagreed with any moral decree they believe `God,` decreed. Somehow, they always seem to interpret it to fit what they believe to be moral and immoral anyway. So, does religion make you `good?` No, it just gives them an illusionary authority with which to justify imposing their own values on others. Even if it is heavily influenced by the religion they're using.
I don't forgive.
I don't forget.
I am

Take the unspoken fear out of this caller and I guarantee that he never makes this call in the first place. This is why religion is poison to critical thinking.
