WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

I DO equate scaring children about eternal fire, and torment, with abuse.
@James Henry Smith There is no devil, unless you're being sarcastic.
As someone who was raised Catholic, I agree. Can't tell you how neurotic I was as a child over my fear of going to Hell.
@James Henry Smith Whatever you do, don't look too closely at the fine print. That's where the devil is: in the details.
@@dx1450 Is it any different to ghost or monster? They probably both seem just as real at night.
To tell a child that they were born broken and deserve eternal torture for simply being the way they were born is child abuse.

I picture George walking around downtown with a sandwich board yelling, "Repent!"
It’s 9 years on, but I suspect he’s still angry from this call. 😂
"I wasn't listening and only caught a handful of words and interpreted that through my persecution complex."
Wow thanks George.
Dang! We were so close to some really good evidence for a god. It's tragic how often our Christian callers display contempt for a two-way dialogue.
So close indeed. I really thought George was gonna be the one to cure me of my atheism, lol.

@@ministryofarguments5257 The OP made no mention of disliking Christians. He merely pointed out that many of the christian callers want to preach and talk over the hosts instead of participating in a conversation, and he made that comment because poor old George did exactly that throughout this call. If god can intervene to perform a few magic tricks, why doesn’t he intervene to alleviate the suffering of millions of his starving and disease ridden children; I guess THAT miracle is out of his league.
If I were writing a comedy sketch of the event, God would have quietly healed a few pilgrims of life threatening disease and disability behind the backs of reporters, too busy documenting mass hallucination as divine inspiration to notice.
Cause god works in mysterious ways.
And why is it he only performs magic tricks to people who already believe in him? Why is it he never shows up at an atheist conference, for example? Back when I was still religious but having serious doubts, I prayed to God to reveal himself to me if he is real, so I'd know for sure. I left it up to him to choose how to do that, and now, 20 some years later, still nothing. So either God doesn't exist or he doesn't care if I believe in him or not.
@@richiegomez2769 Spooky action at a dissonance.
That's right. If God is all powerful, then why is he allowing the world to become a worse place as time progresses? Why did he allow life to be so much better in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, but let the world deteriorate in recent years? There are fewer and fewer decent jobs nowadays. The crime rate is out of control. Many people can't afford to pay rent, so the homeless population is skyrocketing. Now we've had this Covid pandemic for two years and there's no sign of it ending anytime soon. I'm sure that billions of prayers have been said to God begging him to end this pandemic so we can go back to normal life. But it just gets worse.
Even if George can prove that the sun danced around the sky he would still have his work cut out to prove that God did it. Why not aliens? Why not the Flying Spaghetti Monster? Why not Fergal Burgle Manurgle Burgle?

That's a big problem with the supernatural, there's no way to rule out supernatural causes. So you trick yourself into thinking that it's evidence for (god/aliens/flying spaghetti monster/fbmg) but you have no way to tell which one is the cause.

To deliberately traumatize children with hateful and misanthropic ideologies is ALWAYS a crime. Children believe in their formative, early years everything. The words of adults are & become their reality.
For instance, the lie they would exist forever, is placing a time bomb that will traumatize them at the moment they learn the truth. Immeasurable is the resulting continued collective harm to humanity from this one detail alone.

This is hilarious, the sun apparently moved lol. 🤣
In my Baptist school I was taught something similar. That all historians, everywhere, all admit to the sun not going down for 30+ hours like it says in the Bible god extended the day to prolong a war.
So that must mean everything in the Southern Baptist tradition is true.
The Miracle of the Sun occurred at Fatima. There were three girls but only one supposedly spoke to Mary. None of the crowd saw Mary. Of all the people gathered there some saw a spinning sun, some saw changing colours and the rest saw nothing unusual at all. Given this occurred in Portugal during WW1 you'd think someone might have noted strange sun activity.
Meanwhile dozens of people where treated for Retina burns from staring into the sun. Just wacky stuff.
Go outside, especially at night... in a dark place and look at any particular star. Concentrate and stare at it for a few moment focus only on it and in a few moments, it will appear to move... In reality it's eyeball movement and hallucination... Easy to do and easy to reproduce...
It's rotation of Earth, you dummy.
It's the Earth's atmosphere distorting it too. No stars flicker!
Same as watching LED headlights from the car behind you in your rearview mirror. LED lights look like they move around irrespective of the rest of the car because they are very rapidly turning on and off, but with the random bumps and joggles from your car and the car behind you, it looks like the lights themselves are bouncing and bobbing around on their own. Not a miracle, just technology working faster than our eyes.
@SKULL AND BONES No... I was pointing out an easy to reproduce optical effect...
Let's not forget that it's really difficult to look at sun and follow in in the sky . It's even more easier to have this illusion happen if you try to look at sun because it's just so strong

Poor George. Somebody should lock up his phone.😂
Yep. His first words out of the gate were a Strawman Fallacy.
Religious indoctrination is the worst form of child abuse. My friend was a victim. She slashed her wrists and tried to commit suicide. She was taught any good thought she had was ‘god’ and any bad thought was ‘satan’. She had a constant war going on in her head and she couldn’t take it any longer.
Marsha was sent to a state hospital in Galveston. When I visited her she was tied to a wheelchair so she couldn’t hurt herself. I broke down seeing her and seeing the effects religion had on her.
She was later transferred to a state hospital in Austin. Even though I barely had any money for gas I drove my van to see her every weekend for over a year and a half. I’d take her out on day passes and when I brought her back I slept in my van outside the hospital. I couldn’t see her during the week because she was only allowed to get day passes on weekends.
In almost a year and a half of visiting her not one member of her Christian family visited. Not one member of the Baptist church she belonged to visited her. While I did everything I could to show her I cared the only thing those religious hypocrites could do was thump their goddamned Bibles. Every one of them were hypocrites.
After months in the hospital and after extensive therapy Marsha told me I saved her life. I was the only one who cared about her. The entire structure of religious people she grew up with all abandoned her. All the things Christians claim they are were untrue.
Before Marsha’s suicide attempt I went to her church on a Wednesday night at her baptist church. The preacher kept ranting and raving how awful everyone in the congregation was and telling them they were all going to burn in hell. He kept condemning them and I couldn’t take the abuse anymore. What’s especially sad is that preacher was quoting directly out of the Bible. He was using quotes of what the god of the Bible said to beat and belittle everyone in the congregation. He was mimicking how god acts and reacts in the Bible. So no one can blame his personality. He was doing exactly what the Bible taught him say. That’s the insidious evil that is in the Bible. The god of the Bible is condemning, petty, judgmental, vindictive, narcissistic and punitive. So the preacher was acting just like god acts in the Bible.
I nudged Marsha and whispered that I had to leave. She was too afraid to get up in front of the congregation of people she knew her entire life to leave. Religious indoctrination paralyzed her.
I got up and went to a hallway that led to an exit. As I approached the exit door three women came in, noticed I was leaving and they said in a hateful tone “Where do you think you’re going!” I told them “I’m going outside where if there’s a god he’d be there and not inside this abusive church.” They blew up and their eyes were full of rage. I continued to leave and walked pass them and out to the 20 degree weather. Once outside I just walked around the parking lot feeling so good I was able to leave that awful, abusive church. The skies were crystal clear and I could see so many stars. At the time I thought if there was a god he’d be outside. I thought what was going on in that church was despicable. I witnessed people being willingly abused. It disgusted me. And I also realized how Marsha became so abused she tried to kill herself. She was the victim of a lifetime of religious abuse. I’ve always wondered how many people die from suicide caused by religious abuse. I felt sorry for all the victims.
After Marsha got out of the state hospital she stayed in a halfway house for another half of a year. I continued to visit her every weekend. We’d sit on the bank of Town Lake in Austin and talk and joke or I’d take her out to eat. Later she ended up getting married and had children of her own. But luckily she didn’t indoctrinate them the way her parents indoctrinated her. After a year and a half of non stop therapy Marsha was able to cut all ties to Christianity.
Teaching religion to a child is child abuse. It causes all kinds of mental problems and suicides. I’m glad I was able to save one person who otherwise would have died at the hands of religion.
I saved Marsha’s life by helping her rid her mind of the poisonous Christian god and all the poisonous people who call themselves Christians. None of them were there when Marsha needed someone the most. I was.

Sounds like most of the christians I know. Where their preacher or the church leadership is more concerned about controlling the congregation than being of service or providing charitable services. So glad to be free from that BS.
Ever notice that since phone cameras have been around God has been really stingy with the miracles
The Jesus on a pancake WAS a TRUE miracle and no one can dispute this! I saw it for sale on eBay!
I saw a dog's arse jesus on You Tube.
And what George (and people like him) fail to realize is, even if (that's a big if) the sun really did "dance in the sky," that in no way proves beyond any doubt that God is real and performed a miracle. All it would prove is that something strange happened, and just because a few kids claim that Mary talked to them doesn't mean squat. You logically can't make a connection there.
The time to believe in something is when the evidence supports it.
Without evidence, belief is not warranted.
Every theist I've interacted with has been asked to provide their scientific evidence supporting the existence of a god.
The only thing they've provided me are opinions and unfounded claims.
When you look into a really bright light source for to long then lights will start to flash and move around it's nothing more than a hallucination very easily explained
And my guess is that when some of these people were praying they were looking upward into the sky where the bright sun is, and eventually started hallucinating that it was moving around. So then after a few people started "seeing" the sun dance around, suggestion took over and others started believing they saw it too, or else claimed they did because they didn't want to miss out on that "miracle."
Not a hallucination but yeah
Miracles are observed by the believers and no one else. Jesus spent 40 days with his disciples after his resurrection, but no one else saw him besides his disciples.
His disciples were submissive, gullible and deranged POS
Clearly god, who loves all humans wanted this small group of people, especially the ones already believing in his existence, to know of him by making the sun dance. He made it so good that nobody else except the small group would notice it, not even the people dedicating their lives to the behaviour of stellar bodies.
What i do to tell people im here with them? I say "hello", maybe tell them my name and who i am and talk to them in person. Naaahhhh that would be easy and interferring with their free will.

Various naturalistic explanations have been put forth concerning the odd behavior of the sun on that date. The eyewitness accounts vary widely in what the pilgrims thought they saw. According to Joe Nickell, sun-dogs or sun-devils are one meteorological phenomenon that might have been observed there; others have chalked up the apparitions to mass hysteria, the tendency to interpret images in accordance with what you hope to see, or simply the medically-unwise effects of staring into the sun too long.

It seems almost certain that the three shepherd chidren saw something that they described as a small person looking like the Michelin Man, not like the Virgin Mary. Soon the catholic church took over, changed the description and sent the surviving child, Lucía (her cousins died soon after the vision, in 1919 and 1920) to a series of convents, where she spent the rest of her days as a cloistered nun so she she wouldn’t talk freely. - That anything good that ever happened in their life was someone else's doing (God), and anything bad is their own fault.
- If bad things happen to people, they "deserve" it", including children dying of cancer.
- They're forbidden to enjoy many forms of entertainment other kids can, because it's "the devil's work!". Rock and roll, D&D, certain videogames, fantasy books, kids shows with LGBT themes all have been accused of this.
- Regarding teenagers: they're supposed to feel guilty for experiencing sexual arousal, watching porn, having naughty thoughts, having sex before marriage or having romantic interest in people of the same gender. Things that are all perfectly natural, normal parts of our species.
These are not harmless little beliefs at the sidelines of someone's life, but have been shown again and again to be existential crises and traumas waiting to happen.
It was Portugal, not Mexico. But it still didn’t happen.
One time when I was very intoxicated the Earth and my bed were spinning so fast that I puked. I'm not even sure where to go with that. I do know that everyone I told about it was in denial that the Earth starting spinning faster than usual. I must be the only sane person around. Only God could cause something like that.
It's what you experienced, you were intoxicated, doesn't mean it really happened.
Delusional

Why in this day and age are these videos looking like they were uploaded and recorded with a calculator, are the donations not enough? Surely theres some one who can correct this. Other than that I enjoy this channel.
God is the best hide and seek player of all time
I bet George is still talking
Blimey on 30000 people out of how many
george is always good for a laugh - sadly
It was cause by the burning bush..lol
(I'm sharing the opinions of academic professionals like Dawking, Harris, Dennett, etc). For the person who base his/her life on some deity/religion (meaning, explanation, justification for suffering, future compensation for the good people and punishment for the bad ones, etc), to put in doubt the existence of the divine is to attempt with existence proper.
People like George show a clear desperation when questioning his beliefs. It is like removing his life vest when he doesn't know how to swim finding himself in the middle of the ocean. He even sounded like drowning trying to cut-off the hosts. I feel sorry not for him but for the kids that must listen to him on "Sunday School"; the religious-neurosis is transmited like a virus and that IS child abuse, since children do not have yet the capacity to reason and weight what they are told. Once they internalize these dogmas and such beliefs become part of their identity, it is difficult if not impossible to remove them later in life (through critical thinking, reason, logic).
Opinion: This is a blending of neurosis, irrationality, and (if I may) stupidity. (Some type of neurotic behaviour have to do with the compulsive need to control the beliefs of others, and in the case of George, the beliefs of children. What a shame.)
I'm just waiting for someone to say that their evidence was a piece of bread with the face of jesus.
God making the Sun dance around to show he is there would be interfering with our free will. Don’t Christians insist that God would never show himself because that would interfere with our free will?
Is this 'miracle of the sun' you say was in Mexico, a copy of the one supposed to have happened in Fatima, Portugal in 1917. Wow, these miracles get around a bit don't they? Where's the next one going to be, on Mars?
I’ve never understood the urge on the part of some religious people to prove the existence of God. It’s all a matter of faith; the whole idea is to believe something that is incredible, without evidence. I’m not a believer but I was raised in a traditionalist Christian household and personally I find it a beautiful thing that fosters stability even if I don’t believe in it. I certainly was not abused, as some suggest, by being raised that way. My family are all fundamentalist Christians and they’re wonderful, well-adjusted people. I don’t expect them to justify their faith to me through evidence any more than I expect atheists to prove there is no God. Neither endeavor is really possible.
If you believe this happened, go outside and stare at the sun
Can you spell "troll"
Yep. As soon as the leg growing trick is done you know you're dealing with a Con man
George/Ethan is a troll
Yeah but how seriously can you take someone who thinks a person who has grown up with a massive testosterone level, providing 'massive' physiological advantage that is not in 'any' way available to another person growing up with minimal testosterone, that is, the highest level is still way below the lowest level, and does not and can not overlap and thereby is not a continuum, should be able to compete physiologically with that person.
To think that that difference is like having longer arms or being taller.
That notion is so obviously ridiculous that anyone asserting it has to be doubted on everything else. Not just reasonable doubt, ridiculous doubt.
Trans women who transition after puberty have a massive advantage physiologically over those who have female puberty.
Doping is frowned upon in sport. Males have a doping advantage all the way from puberty. An advantage unavailable to non trans women.
If you can't get that right, well, what other dogma driven assumptions are coloring everything else?
I hope those opinions have changed recently on the basis of recent studies
