      @@sammur1977 my guy, unless you're ironic, which I hope, there are indeed different kinds of slavery, and the most common trait of them all is that they're all horribly immoral! Slavery was, it seems, an inevitable part of socio-economical development of most civilizations, so from a historical POV you can understand why it was included in early laws, and how it evolved, gradually becoming more structured and complex, as the society grew and developed more advanced economy. HOWEVER there is zero reason not to call it out, if some people in modern day argue, that society should follow the laws written back then. And argue that those laws are supernatural, perfect and inerrant. They don't propose slavery in particular (usually), but slavery IS in the book they promote, so what's the reason to trust anything from there? None, just as there is no reason to use Ptolemey's navigational maps or ancient Roman medical instructions, even though there might be some true facts there. We have advanced way further.

      A "fun fact", the early Israelites were polytheists that transitioned to monotheism. And the first four commandments were there to solidify the transition. The older polytheistic religion had gods such as Baal, Asherah, Moloch, Chemosh, Dagon, Nabu (for Dr. Fate fans), etc. And interestingly enough, these gods are mentioned in the Bible. Most of the mention is to stress that Yahweh is stronger than these.
      But a story in 2 Kings 3:26-27 actually demonstrates how the Israelites were driven back when the Moabite king sacrificed his son to Chemosh, demonstrating a win against the Israelite god.
      A good source for a lot of this info is Dr. Dan McClellan, who's actually a "Christian" (Mormon). But he's a Biblical scholar.

So they established exclusivity, countered syncretism, centralized the worship to the Jerusalem temples, and strengthened the idea of a special covenant between god and his "chosen" people.
      Of course Christianity upended the original old testament idea of covenant to say, "oh no, you don't need to be part of the tribe, you can be anyone, just believe." This was a very important component of the spread of Christianity over Judaism.

    The interesting thing about the defense of the biblical condoning of slavery is that it illustrates a far more crushing problem. Let's say contemporary Christians are correct in their interpretations. It took thousands of years for that `revelation.` The entire Abolitionist movement didn't begin in Europe until the industrial revolution. If that many people, can get it that wrong, for that long, then even if the bible `were` the divine revelation of a god, it's worthless. One would think a god as described by Christianity would get that.

    When the bible mentions punishments, it usually calls for the death penalty for even minor "crimes". When it mentions that a slave owner that beats their slave into an immediate death is to be "punished" it does *not* mention the death penalty. It doesn't even mention a fine, as it does for those very few "crimes" that do not warrant the death penalty.
    The "punishment" must thus be a slap on the wrist.

    • @quecee
      @quecee 24 дня назад +3

      Exodus 21 does mention punishments for harming a slave. For a death within two days, it says the slave can be avenged, though it's not clear what that means. And later, hurting a slave can result in the slave being set free, but more than likely this only applies to indentured slaves.

    • @Arkloyd
      @Arkloyd 24 дня назад +3

      @@quecee That law likely only applies to male indentured hebrews that haven't been "incentivized" into staying with their master by the master holding their family hostage.
      But, yes, the bible is usually very clear about the punishments deserved for most crimes: Death. It loves the death penalty so much it gleefully calls for it for each and every minor "crime", excluding rape (Pay the father a fine and marry the victim forever) and slave murder.
      When the punishment is not death, a fine is usually mentioned. Again, not in the case of an immediate death via slave-beating.
      I'm left to wonder what "will be avenged" means when the law those people wrote went well and truly out of their way to dehumanize the slave, going so far as to make different laws for slaves, women and other property than for free men.

    • @quecee
      @quecee 24 дня назад +4

      @@Arkloyd Yes. I mentioned that it's probably applicable to indentured servants, which means that they were Hebrew.
      And if avenging the slave's death is merited because the death was within two days, a family member could seek justice or compensation, which could include fines or whatever was allowed for at that time. More than likely, specific punishments were likely codified.
      And again, this is probably just for Israelite slaves as foreign slaves would have had very little rights. But even the indentured slaves were considered "property", which makes it immoral, despite what apologists try to say.

      Keep the sabbath holy is as sinful as murder. And collecting sticks on sabbath is enough for instant stoning to death.
      And the Tenth Commandment - also on the same level - is envying your neighbour belongings. JUST THE THOUGHT. Also punishable by stoning, apparently.
      And the Seven Deadly Sins (which punishments here?) are all mere emotions, emotions we all have, that we even need, and so more or less harmless when kept under check.
      How 2000 years ago you came to children without lust? How can you defend yourself without anger?
      My impression: The goal is to make the range of sins so broad, so vague, that ANYONE is a sinner.
      And that means ANYone needs the church constantly to be told that God forgives you your sins - but as you cannot exist in a real world without these properties, you are a lifelong customer (and payer..)
      What is interesting is that I do not see any attempts in the Bible to help you learn to control these vices. A responsible father, esp. one that is all-knowing, should have no problem to coach you efficiently.

    Slavery -- as practiced in every known civilization -- was and is PROFITABLE! Regardless of how powerful the god of the bible is claimed to be, profit is the #1 issue that a wise deity will leave strictly alone.
    That tells me two things: MEN invented and wrote the words of "god" and MEN were as conscious of a mainstay of their culture's economy as they were of the morals they'd been commanded to follow.
    Criticizing slavery was poking the bear -- a very large and irritable bear. And there was no guarantee that this new and struggling religion called "Christianity" would triumph if challenged to a duel to the "death" by slavery advocates -- pretty much everyone who wasn't a slave!
    Best to let sleeping bears lie and revisit the issue at a later date.

      What I focus on now is: what are the best ways of communicating with people who have significantly different views of reality than you do. I think this is a crucial question especially at this time in the history of the US. And I think that simply dismissing people, making fun of them or their beliefs, using ad hominem, suggesting that you are always rational and they simply aren't, are all excellent ways to assure that no one is going to change their mind, and that the comments section is going to be primarily people saying variants of: boy are they stupid, that's the problem, they're just dumb, dishonest, irrational, and it's a good thing that non-theists aren't like that. GOD IN THE UNHOLY BIBLE instructs how to buy and sell men, women and even children as slaves (personal property). Even how to own slaves for life and passing your male/female slaves to your children as inherited property. IT'S EVIL.
    Leviticus 25:44-46
    44 Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.
    45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.

      Some, but not all forms of slavery violate all three of these basic rights. When - a slave cannot choose who they work for, a slave will not be paid for their labor (providing food and a bed is not proper compensation), and a slave cannot choose to stop being a slave.

      11 If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you.
      12 If they refuse to make peace and they engage you in battle, lay siege to that city. 13 When the Lord your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it.
      14 As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves. And you may use the plunder the Lord your God gives you from your enemies.
      15 This is how you are to treat all the cities that are at a distance from you and do not belong to the nations nearby.
      16 However, in the cities of the nations the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes.
