I retired from the Shipyard at Newport News. We built and overhauled the aircraft carriers and submarines. I had the privilege of working on the USS Theodore Roosevelt CVN 71 and a lot more of the great carriers including the USS Enterprise. Love it and love the Mariners Museum Also. The Apprentice's from the Shipyard built the full size model of the Monitor civil warship that sets out front at the Museum.
Hello; I have been to the Mariner's Museum 3 or 4 times and was impressed each time. They have one of the best collections of model ships that I have ever seen. If you have a chance to visit the Museum it is well worth the admission fee. You can spend the entire day there and enjoy every minute. I have since moved to Texas so getting to visit again is not likely.
I just went there with my dad today and spent hours studying the models and full sized craft. Also building the John Smith shallop, which they had a finished one of there :] great experience!
Glad you enjoyed it! Yes, there was a wonderful model of the Eagle. It so happened that I was in the museum with the archaeologist who excavated this ship. We discussed with him the reconstruction of those parts that are missing - I want to build a more accurate copy))))
Thank you Olha The prisoner of war models are what amaze me the most the level of detail considering the tools and materials they would have had available to them. Pls take care.
This is a wonderful, inspirational video. My daughter lives near there - I'll make a point of seeing it next time I'm out there! Olha, i think about you every day. I hope there will be brighter days ahead for you and your country.
This makes me want to go back and visit our maritime museum here in Australia. There are some nice models in both the Sydney museum and the Maritime museum. Having watched your videos for a while now I will look at them in a whole new way. Thanks for another great video.
I use to live close to this museum. It use to have a few sailing ship models that looked to be about 1/10 scale. It's a very worthwhile place to visit.
I first visited the museum years ago when I was about ten. I was hooked on model ships from then on. Theone ship that caught my attention was the CSS Alabama. Now that I'm 72 I have run out of room, ships and cases are everywhere. Maybe I'll see if the museum has any interest in some of my work. I saw the Monitor exhibit a few years ago, very interesting.
Ohla, if you are still in the U.S. you really need to see the 2nd floor of Preble Hall at the United States Naval Academy. They have an amazing collection of ship models there.
Olha, I'll have to visit the Mariner's Museum (Va.) if I ever get back to that part of the country! I had also forgotten that the Monitor was being restored there -- I'd like to see that since it is a "real" ship, recovered from when/where she sunk. Thank you for sharing this!
@@OlhaBatchvarov Also thank you for the video on the Northeastern Model Ship conference. Geez never knew it was around. I live 20 minutes from New London Ct. Will be going to the 2022 in April. Could you please post a link to the cannon rigging video you made? I had it saved but my computer crashed. Thank you!
Olha, sensacional o acervo do museu. Que diversidade e qualidade dos trabalhos. Gosto muito de figuras humanas nos barcos, acho que da vida ao trabalho. Um dia gostaria de visitá-lo . Abração.
@@OlhaBatchvarov I once visited on the once in a blue moon occasion they had the Monitor’s turrets and guns drained from their protective water covering
Unless I'm mistaken, ships were built of oak. With the very large number of ships that existed in the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, I always wondered if the oak resource was available and if there was an ecological impact on the forests.
might have been environmental impact but i dont think the oak was anywhere near depleted through the 19th century- america alone had a seemingly inexhaustable supply
I think one day is enough - I only had 2-3 hours to photograph this collection, so I literally ran from room to room and that's why I really want to visit this museum again!

They have some stellar documents and books as well. The "Library of Alexandria" for commercial shipping and fishing history.
Fascinating. And all clearly photographed. Thank you. Rmb
