Watching the older generations discover her for the first time is a singular joy. She is one of the very few whose aesthetic and sound transcend truly manage to transcend generations.
You explain things to your dad extremely articulately, especially moments in social and pop culture! You guys are so endearing, I like this channel a lot.
Lana's music lives in a space where one sensation, leads you into another sensation. Shades of Cool is one of my favorites because she details a failing relationship with someone who does nothing but hurt her and sonically it's sad, gorgeous and overwhelming. The song takes you through the stages of emotions including a full meltdown into a calm acceptance of it all.
Your dad was onto something with the Amy Winehouse reference. Lana cites her as an inspiration. What’s interesting about Lana is that she includes her musical points of reference in her lyrics via shout outs to artists…but incorporates it into the songwriting, so it never feels tacked on. I loved this reaction, and I would love to see you guys cover Mariner’s Apartment Complex or Let The Light In♥️
they both have that melancholic vibe going on that not many other artist can depict that beautiful. My uncle said the same when we were once talking about her music.
First time I heard Lana was when my husband gifted me a record player and a vinyl of her first album which was a random choice. Ended up listening to it for hours in the dark, hanging off the bed. Lol. Great video guys!
Bro, your dad seems like a really cool guy and all of his analysis of the song was really good. Video Games is her first big success and it's very good as listening nowadays, she's not at all generic or commercial.
It is her stage name. Her actual name is Elizabeth Grant. Lol I was hoping you’d mention it but it seems you didn’t know. Your dad was spot on about the name sounding like Californian towns. There’s a place in CA called Marina Del Rey. How she got the name though was because she spent a lot of time in Miami, speaking Spanish and was influenced by her Cuban friends. She’s also evidently influenced by California/ old Hollywood in general which is very blatant in her music/lyrics. 4:15 😇
It’s funny so I have two daughters; Alana Rae and Amaya. We listened to Lana Del Rey quite a bit when my girls were maybe 5 and 6 and I had to lie to them and say some of the songs were by Lana Del Rey and some were by Maya Del Rey just to keep the peace.
Omg I’m so glad you mentioned Nancy Sinatra and bang bang! One of my all time favorite singers along with Lana. Never knew she compared herself with her, makes a lot of sense.
Lana has come to be known as like a chronicler of California, or the American condition, without really making explicit statements on it. I def would love to see you dive into her discography!!!
It says so much that he wants to work through her music chronologically. He genuinely loves her. I love seeing people’s first reaction to her voice because there is truly nothing like it. It’s always the first time someone has felt something for the first time and it’s so special being able to witness it
Well this year I hardly listened to Lana at all, thanks for reminding me of how much I love her. I think your dad would love "Did you know there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd?" My favorite Lana song is Love Song.
I get the Adele reference because she has a lot of Jazz and blues like Amy Winehouse, but Lana is different she does 50s and is inspired by Nina Simone, Billie Holidays. She also does a lot of Marilyn baby voice of the women in the 50s who her character is mostly influenced by.
My brother and I often share music with each other that we think the other might like. I remember when he sent me the link to this video and I became an instant fan of Lana. It was unlike anything I ever heard. Still am a huge fan. She has a great catalog and she has also done great songs for Movies.
I adore you guys so much. Your relationship is seriously so beautiful. Dad is so sincere… he is so nurturing in a way you can only understand if you’re a parent… it’s hard to explain… like…you let your kid talk about a time/place/something special in their life without interrupting and making it about yourself… you let them have their moment, you validate them by truly listening to their experience. The way you guys so openly communicate and share is seriously so touching. Sorry for the rant 🤣 probs didn’t make sense.. but yeah love you guys!!
Thank you so much for giving him this moment. I would like to see him react to anything from Honeymoon or Ocean Blvd, like God knows I tried or kintsugi or white dress. Ugh I wish we were already deep into her discography cause if there’s any artist who can make him feel connected to his youth is Lana.
I'm a die-hard hip-hop head, but Lana is my favorite artist of all time. If you get the chance, you gotta show your dad the title track off her third album Honeymoon. Her harmonizing and vocal control on that track is absolutely jaw-dropping.
This was such a respectful, loving discussion dedicated to one of the best modern musicians 💛 this is the attention she deserves! Since you mentioned LDR referring to herself as a "gangster Nancy Sinatra", you should listen to her cover of Summer Wine! She sang the duet with Barrie-James, her ex
2011 I was a sophomore in HS… Absolutely blew me and my friends minds away. Still a Lana Stan still this day. Seeing her for the second time at Coachella this year 😭🩷🩷🩷
Lana Del Rey is Awesome!…The 1st Time I was Introduced to her was in 2012, She was Already Huge & was Considered a Prodigy of the 2010’s!…But her Music Blew My Mind!…She was to Me what Most People thought about Amy Winehouse!…Amy was Dope but I ONLY Vibed with a Handful of her Songs (Including Nas’ Work)!…But Lana is Dope!…Another Great Choice!…
Oh yeah, i been waiting for this! Considering your dad comentary about chronologic order, i think the next one HAS to be BORN TO DIE! Kisses from Brazil 🇧🇷
I recently discovered you channel and have been enjoying every video very much. I glad you see you are still making videos and I will be watching newer videos of yours but Lana Del Rey is one of my favorites and I am so happy your dad loved it. One point about her voice intensifying, like your dad mentions, could be also her love is intensifying throughout the song.
SS and Born to die are obvious OGs of that era, but would love to hear about Off to races, National Anthem (esp with the video concept) or maybe Ride? Also, would be pretty exciting to see you touch on Ultraviolence in the future. Speaking of old references, have you ever heard her cover of Nancy's Summer wine? absolutely ADORE her version of it
would be nice to react now to "Did you know there's a tunnel under Ocean Blvd" to see a 2023 Lana writing and voice - compared to her debut with video games
Lana Del Rey is so good. This was a great choice, love this song so much! ❤ Dad is being introduced to so much because of the channel & thats so cool but also Kai is too with Dads prog rock from his youth which is awesome 😎❤
Such a good choice to share. I hope you also share the song and video for "National Anthem"...her poem/monologue at the end about Jackie O. gives me shivers every time.
You were mentioning Lana’s influences. I know she’s mentioned Billie Holiday and she’s mentioned in her track “The Blackest Day” I know she loves her. I think she even has a Billie Holiday related tattoo. She’s talked about Bruce Springsteen, Whitney Houston, Lou Reed, The Eagles, Leonard Cohen, John Lennon, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Elvis, Kendrick Lamar, The Flamingos, Eminem (inspired her lyricism), Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, especially Kurt Cobain, Frank Sinatra, Jim Morrison, (The Doors), Notorious BIG, Guns N Roses, Cat Power, The Beach Boys and Amy Winehouse. Some of them are mentioned in songs too. Especially Jim Morrison. A few 60’s girl groups and 70’s rock groups as well I’d say but I know she likes all genres and she said she grew up on hip hop.
I absolutely love Lana’s songs from back in the day 2011. She gave the quality back to music that we lost from the party 2010s Amy whinehouse passed in 2011 and I think she was someone to fit in her shoes
Great content! Loving all the reactions! Would definitely like to see a ‘summertime sadness’ reaction! & when are we gonna get a reaction to Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool??
I’d describe Lana as very mesmerising like she’s very hypnotising. The only other person I can think of nowadays like her that you get that feeling from as well is The Weeknd. It’s funny because every person I watch reacting to her I get that feeling too like you just get lost in her music. A lot of people describe it as seductive as well but it’s poetic, emotional, every song is like a movie, the production is like no other. I’ve never seen anyone react the way they do to her music like she’s always switching it up on you and you don’t expect it. The beats are just amazing and like your dad said “she just commands your attention” melancholy is a good word he said too. But she can go high and switch her voice. She can do different genres and her lyrics are unmatched.
I just came upon your channel and have subscribed. I love that you can share your love of music with your Dad - or vice versa that he shared it with you growing up. I’m so glad you introduce your dad to Lana Del Rey, her whole discography is amazing
I agree. I’ve loved her for the last decade.❤️ I really want her to win one of her Grammy awards…. But whatever happens she deserves it.👍🏾
she doesn’t have one single bad song it’s crazy
Watching the older generations discover her for the first time is a singular joy. She is one of the very few whose aesthetic and sound transcend truly manage to transcend generations.
You explain things to your dad extremely articulately, especially moments in social and pop culture! You guys are so endearing, I like this channel a lot.
"Blue Jeans", "Born To Die" and "Ride" are all-time favorites, as well. The whole album is just perfect from front to back though.
Agree with all of those 100%, along with Summertime Sadness
really need to see a reaction to ride! i’d do anything to be able to listen to the song w the entrance monologue for the first time all over again 🥲
Lizzy Grant is better than Lana
Yes, RIDE

That whole album is my favourite, like it’s just too good and I can’t handle it. I hope she revisits some of the sounds from it in future!
Shades of Cool my hands down favorite.
Lana's lower register is a thing of beauty 💓

I have a feeling your dad is going to love Lana! I can tell he'll appreciate her vintage/retro Americana vibes.

Melancholic, grand, and soft are definitely Lana’s staples. It’s so atmospheric. You should listen to Young and Beautiful or Money Power Glory.

You articulated everything so well at the beginning. I don't even listen to much of her music, but it's so memorable and creates a big atmosphere.
