I had this problem twice, first time in 2018 dealer took it under recall, it happened again this week, the grommet had a hole; instead of a grommet, I used a small round magnet and placed it on the brake arm under the switch, permanent cost pennies and took all of 30 seconds.

I had this come back twice I used nickle coin second time but great idea magnetic should just stick there I had to glue it nice thinking

There was a recall for this issue?

    • @pjfsr7024
      @pjfsr7024 3 года назад +10

      @@MM-st2pf yes.
Look for brake light or brake pedal recall.
It's just a rubber grommet, that seems to wear out or break apart.
That sucker affects your Dole /Brake lights staying on which seems to cause your battery to drain and the computer to make a decision you want to stop and it will slow you down as you drive.
This also affects cruise control and another warning light ( forgot which one atm ).

Thanks, brother. My son called me the other night from where he works. He said his car would not start (2012 Elantra). I drove out there with some jumper cables and a few tools. When I got there the break lights being on threw me for a loop. I noticed pieces of plastic on the driver's side floorboard. I knew then that the pedal stop was probably the issue, as this had happened to my 2002 MR2 Spyder years before. I didn't remember exactly how I had fixed the problem. I immediately searched you tube on my i-phone and your video popped up. I refreshed myself through your video and used some gum to kind of put the plastic pieces back together and hold them in place under the brake switch plunger. This turned the brake lights off. I jump started his car and he was able to get it home with me following him. I was able to find an automotive plastic fastener in the garage and put that in to hold better (than the gum) until I could order and receive some new pedal stoppers from ebay. When they came in, I had my son watch your video so that he could learn how the brake switch system works, what the problem was, and where to install the new stopper. Thanks again for the refresher video; you made me look like a hero in front of my wife and my son!

@@RBTheMechanicI have a 2002 Honda Accord (my 2nd car and my 18 yr old son is using it for work/school). It only has 166,000 miles and a TON of brand new stuff I did to it with my mechanic. Spent around $2000 to have it in great condition for my son to use when he starts college in the fall. He should be able to get at least another 100,000 miles out of it if he takes good care of it. So….This happened today.. the lights stayed on even with the car turned off. I noticed it 2 hours after he had driven it when I went to the store. I didn’t know what to do so I just disconnected the battery cable for now. 😂 Hopefully this is the issue and I can fix it easily (I’m a single mom) If I don’t find the piece broken I’ll have to call my mechanic that works on my cars to come look at it. 😊

Jan 2023! Took a road trip and when I parked at home my break lights would not turn off. Disconnected the battery for the evening. I’m not mechanically included… but today I was researching. My top hit was to replace the break switch. Which I did to no help…. I was about to break down and just go to the dealership, but came across your video and fixed it with “duck tape and a nickel!” This was on a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe. Ordered the grommet online, but that won’t get here until mid week.

Tore a 2ft or so length and ripped into 3 equal long lengths.
Double one length over and over into a 1/4 inch square pad.
Laid another strip over the square pad.
Placed the pad over the spot where the brake switch grommet would go
Then wrapped the strip laid over the pad around the brake notch so the pad would not easily fall off.

Thanks RB The Mechanic. This was exactly the problem with my 96 Honda. The grommet feel out. I have an extra rubber piece and tape to keep it in place temporarily until I get it fix. I don't understand why some people gave you a thumbs down when you shared a solution to the problem. Take care Bro! 👍

This just happened to my car. I saw this little brown piece of plastic and a few other pieces laying on the floor and looked under the dash at the brake pedal and saw that button along with some gritty residue, probably from that broken plastic. I'm not a mechanic so I wasn't really able to put 2 and 2 together so here I am watching your video. Mine is designed differently, but the principle is the exact same. I'm sure that little piece of plastic is going to cost at least $20.00 if not more. Thanks for saving me a lot of time, money and wasted effort.

Just wanted to say thanks for making this video. Ir helped me alot identifying the issue. For other peeps who comes across this issue, I used a spare engine rubber tube, cut off a piece and just placed it where the spacer was. It fixed the issue lol. I'll probably leave that one there since it's thick and will probably last longer than the original break stoppers.

This is exactly the problem I had. Car battery completely dead. Then, luckily, noticed that my brake lights were on when the car was turned off. Upon closer inspection, I found the rubber/plastic bumper pad under the floor mat, it had sheared off at the nib that held it in place against the switch. Jimmy-rigged it back in and problem solved. 👍🏻
