Oh and Death Road Canada is really cool. Aand cult of the lamb!. Scourge bringer, metallic child. Everspace. Dreamscaper would be fav if the people had faces... no faces creeps me out.another cool gothic one. Devil slayer raksasi.. and not forget blazing beaks... and all these on switch and even more... can make many list. Even a new deck builder just like spire.. called..pirate outlaws
Children of Morta is one of my favorite games because of you guys! Even with just a single narrator I loved the story! Fuckin wicked ass family and you can play all of them! So naturally I love Hades! Excited for the sequel!
I see that the devs of Children of Morta were picked to work on Wizard of Legend 2. Will be interesting to see how that turns out. CoM for me was great, but not quite up there with something like Hades. But, if a team that already had a good stab at a rogue-like with CoM can take that exp into making a sequel for WoL (which was similarly 'great but not outstanding'... from what I understand), it will be interesting to see what they come up with.
@@Schmitty7546 Agreed. I played Children of Morta first, and when I fiiiiiiinally tried Hades (held out till 2023 for good sales and finishing my back log haha) it blew my mind. Such a fucking good game. I'm so keen to try Wizard of Legend!! I'm also a league fan! ugh i love video games. can we just forever video games right?
Phew, only one game added to the wishlist this time (Bad North) and that's only because I have most of the rest of them. Honestly, I think Caveblazers is still my fave but that's likely cause I still have fun with it even though I've made next to no progress. For a saveloy I'd say go with Mana Spark or Blazing Beaks, both are regularly around a pound.
The Last Spell has been addictive to me as one of if not my favorite rougelite tactical strategy games. Yeah, runs are long but I don't mind and is kind of the appeal. Very underrated game. Controls take getting used to on controls but not as bad as Battle Brothers (which I believe is one of the best tactics games ever and very underrated; needs to be reviewed here too).
I've seen so many people sing praises for Isaac, but it never clicked for me. Even as a fan of Roguelikes, I find Isaac's lack of clarity with the items, mechanics, and secrets that you wouldn't come across until you play a hundred of hours. But what really scratched that feeling for me is a game you guys recently reviewed, which was Brotato! Man that was so fun, I've played it for 2 straight days.
I don’t tend to “like” lots of videos because I usually keep mine for music I enjoy, adding a like to this one to help feed my growing rougelike addiction as well as to return to comments from other people as well. See what you guys have done to me! Great list and great video as always.
Mana Spark is really good too! They don't just give it away like Dead Cells, your always hurting to buy more gear. If you ever sit down with it, when you find the spoon... Find the room in one of elven dungeons that's empty and bind that spoon to you! The game is hard for a while and never gets easy; however, you do learn how to balance items.
Never going to miss an opportunity to shout out Going Under. It's a wonderful little game, bit on the shorter side but it's really unique (who knew BotW weapon degradation would fit a Roguelite so well?), and it absolutely oozes charm and character from start to finish. Genuinely got some full blown belly laughs out of me as well. Definitely worth a look!
Seconded. Going Under is just a charmer! It's nice to have the pocket roguelike experience. A roguelike that has all the progression systems and mechanics but also ends...I like the replayability but not every single one of them can be my sole focus until the second coming!
I can't disagree, Binding of Isaac pretty much is the grandfather of all Rogue-likes and for good reason! I had quite a bit of fun playing Neon Abyss, I think that should have been #10 or #9 easily. Other Rogue-lite would be GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon, and Wizard of Legend.
I want to mention Caveblazers once more. It's 'Combat Spelunky', where you have a melee weapon, a bow and a slot for a magical item, and you have to fight your way down a cave system and beat tough bosses. There's also perks that completely change your runs, like being a vampire that can't use healing items but has to keep aggressively attacking enemies. I was hooked on it for a very long time! Also it's frequently dirt cheap!!
If you like caveblazers, definitely check out Vagante! I have sunk ~150 hours into it by now. Still haven't beat the game, but that hasn't slowed me down
Really underrated. I played most of the roguelikes/lites. I can agree that Caveblazers sits top 3 on my favorite list. Also try Nuclearthrone, addictive as hell
@@AxLWake I have! I completed it, but never had the urge to go back to it. I think I would have enjoyed it more of I liked how all the family members felt to play. I only really enjoyed the archer daughter and dagger son.
Great list! No one asked but here is mine though it changes all the time. 1. Isaac 2. Dead Cells 3. Skul Dark Mirror 4. Rouge Legacy 2 5. Have A Nice Death 6. Curse of the Dead Gods 7.Fury Unleashed 8. Double Dragon Gaiden 9. Brotato 10. Neon Abyss. Honorable mentions, Quest of Dungeons and Lost Castle. Oh and Madshot! That was really hard as I have a ton of Rougelikes on switch and there is not any I don't really enjoy. Plus there are some I haven't really played much or at all yet and more I still need to get. What a time to be alive and stuff. I like Hades as well but that gets mentioned by people that don't even usually like roguelikes as one of their favourite games so I gave it a break. Oh you should make a top Multiplayer rougelike list if you get the chance!
Such a shame to see no mention of Neon Abyss (I know there are gajillions of games hidden on the eShop so not judging)… … But it is a great game, and worthy of a mention 👍👍👍
As someone who has around 1300 hours in Binding Of Isaac on PC, my no 1 is still Hades. Not just the amazing combat, but the story around it, the way they made it work with the format is just perfect.
Hades is so overated imo, synergies are poor idk why ppl enjoy it so much, the story ? Idk if this is a major point in speedrun, even children of morta has a better story line imo
I thought I could never bypass the gross that is Binding of Isaac. I believed this gem would forever be beyond me. But I recently put 6 hours into Brotato in 2 days (I've only done this with 1 other game ever!!!!) and now...something about the game just hits different... I think I'm ready to to try this one. I've played every other game on this list so this is my dragon to slay that looms large on the horizon.
@@Ser-Smiley I've tried to explain the appeal of this one twice today and alas...no one understands. It's just a tight, instantly gratifying kind of loop that rewards curiosity. It feels rare in games that depend on builds... usually there are ones that are obviously superior.
Brotato has its hooks in me as well. I finished difficulty 0 runs with three different characters yesterday, and think I'll try a level 1 run with some of them today. Such a great game.
Finally a roguelike list with Isaac on the top ! I'd change some stuff on the rest of it , but Isaac is and will probably always be my king of roguelikes .
I love the Risk of Rain games and I'm happy they got shout outs. Can't wait for the remake of 1. RoR 1 was the first roguelike I really got into and 2 does such a good job at keeping the spirit and translating it to 3D. Both games are go to games for a night when i don't know what else to play but I want the full 0 to hero progression in an hour or so. Every playthrough is satisfying and makes you want more. Obviously, there are a bunch of others i love on the list as well.
I could understand why you picked finding of Isaac to be your number one. I just don't think it's that great but the one you left off the list was neon abyss. That one is the bomb😂
I would add another to the Honourable Mentions which is Monster Train; and I get where Slay the Spire would be a 5th place. It is the daddy of deck builders. Monster Train is like Slay the Spire. Instead of 4 characters though, there's 6 clans with 2 different champions in each you can choose from. Has a lot of Hearthstone feel to it, and it's a tower defense. If you haven't played it yet I highly recommend trying it out. For some it's a 50/50. Like they'll like Slay the Spire and Monster Train is meh, or Monster Train they end up liking more than Slay the Spire.
I dont usually play Roguelikes - but I recently purchased Children of Morta which I am finding to by challenging but fun, and given my switch a bit of new life. Although I am curious about how the much berated release of Red Dead Redemption will look and play like on our little old handheld.
I wasn’t sure which ones I missed on the list because there are so many but children of morta is a good one!! So awesome looking… and talking about a roguelite with a story.. this is it!
Great list! There's only one game that I think it deserves to be there at the top, it was even awarded the best strategy game of 2018 and nominated along with Celeste for the best independent game, which is Into the Breach.
I really like GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon and Moonlighter. My favorite Roguelike has to be Slay The Spire though. Great video! Added a few to my wishlist 😊
I totally agree with the binding of isaac. 1100h+ almost got my second dead god on the nintendo switch. Its so crazy addicting. It will always be a game i enjoy. Because im allways looking forward for the "god runs" and thinking "what will i find next". Definativly my nummber one. Even though i hated the art style and thought it was childish. But then i sa the reviews and thought i give it a go. I want my life back Edmund
I absolutely love Hades, and I've been looking for another game to reach that height, but none have so far. I own most of these games but I bounce off them. Hades was immediately fun with all the different combinations of weapons and abilities. Can't wait for the sequel. Void bastards was also amazing though. A sequel to that, with more variety in ships or locations would be epic.
Own all but two of these and a lot more to boot. Been a big fan of the genre for a long time due to its easy pick-up-and-play style and replayability. I will say one big thing tho that I have a huge grievance with...the biggest tragedy of the Switch's roguelike library is the fact that we still haven't gotten a port of Cryptark. If you know, you know. If you don't...well I hope I've intrigued you enough to go try it on another console or pc, and am quite confident you'll agree with me afterwards
I wished more of the rougelikes did what cult of the lamb did. I would have loved for doomsday hunters for instance to have something to come back to after a run. Gonna give risk of rain 1 and 2 a try.
all the games on this list are good times for sure! For me, Hades, Dead Cell, Darkest Dungeon is probably the must pickup even at full price. Each of them are easily 100 hours that you'll never get back lol
The performance of Risk of Rain 2 on Switch is fine. Not sure why that would be a significant mark against it. It only becomes an issue when you're going for very long endless runs. But the performance is fine for any normal run
Yeah I have both 1 & 2 and love them both for their own styles respectively. I never really have any issues on performance on 2 until I start getting so many items stacked in that it just starts crashing everything but that's really not local to the Switch, you can do that playing it on any system. Honestly it's kindof one of the charms of the game, just seeing how broken you can make things, kind of like you can do on Warframe if you've ever spent enough time on it (unfortunately I have)
@@huzcer I could understand that. I have so much experience in the game that it's no longer an issue for me haha. But at the very least, the performance is absolutely fine until you get to extremely late endless levels
@@jettythesunfish oh that's wonderful to hear! Sometimes that's all that is needed for me. I can get behind a grind and buildup of relics//powers//stats or what have you from a game but it's nice to change the accessibility and kind of mov thru the early parts sometimes.
So you said the nothing was in the “Narnia” movie. The only Narnia story I can remember with nothing in it was the firs book “the magicians nephew” and they never made a movie from that book. I think the nothing was from “The Never Ending Story”.😊
I'm actually excited for the remaster. I have Risk of Rain 2 on switch and I never noticed major performance problems. Prob BC I'm not good enough to bog the game down tbh lol
my absolute favorites are spelunky, slay the spyre and into the breach, because those are more of pure roguelikes; roguelites are just a very repetitive loop to get from point A to B, and also they are kinda flooding the market
I love seeing that Bad North made the cut. It feels like a game that flew under everyone's radar (maybe for the minimalist art style making it look boring at first glance?), but it really should show up on more lists like this.
Isaac never gets the appreciation it deserves. So glad to see it on the list. My wife and I have spent thousands of hours in it at this point and despite being so brutal it's just like a relaxing time for us now. We just got my niece into it this week. Great overall list. Gungeon is amazing, Hades of course. I've tried to get into dead cells and I have nothing against it but I just don't jive with the flow of it compared to the others. Same issue I had with rogue legacy. Great games just not my pick up and play vibe
Enter the Gungeon is really good, but I really prefer Nuclear Thrones, even just for the music. The game just never goes on sale tho, so i bought it full price considering I have it for Steam already ...i just dont have a SteamDeck
Wildfrost is excellently balanced. There is soon to be an update on switch that makes it more welcoming to new players. Alot of the issues with it tends to be that it's mechanics aren't explained and cause you to lose runs from something you didn't think worked that way. This is being improved. It's personally my game of the year and I'd recommend you retry it once version 1.06a comes to the switch
Hades didn't grab me immediately honestly. I got Hades and Little Noah the same day and put Hades down to play Noah... blasphemy I know. I'm getting back into it though because I love the look and sound design!
Dead Cells is the best to me, I bought the game back then when it was in alpha or whatever the state was back then, I just keep coming back to it. Also it's made by an indie french studio so yeah .. Cocorico
Dead Cells is one of those titles I've banned for myself because I played them too long; over 250 hours before any DLC. And Hades is an obvious masterpiece. But the rest of my top 5-City of Brass, Fury Unleashed and Sublevel Zero-I'm actually amazed they didn't even get a honorable mention. Yeah, personal taste and all, and the titles on this list are also incredible, but still.
I didnt get this genre at first. I can't get too into dead cells due to frustration..but I got Hades, Cult of the Lamb and Rogue Legacy this month...and I get it now. Which means I'm constantly on 3 hrs sleep at work..up til 6am saying "one more run.."
Dead Cells is the all time best for me. That game is the whole reason I've started playing this genre. Everytime I play it I love it as much as the first time.
The Nothing is from Neverending Story. Would you consider Into the Breach or Neurovoider to be Roguelikes? I like those both a bit better than Dead Cells, the highest I've played in this list.
Personally: 1. Hades 2. Dead Cells 3. Binding of Issac 4. Rogue Legacy 2 5. Slay The Spite 6. Skul: The Hero Slayer 7. Risk Of Rain 2 8. Doomsday Hunters 9. Darkest Dungeon 10. Enter The Gungeon Honorable Mention: Children Of Morta
Army of Ruin! Guys please cover this, probably the best survivors-like, and zero performance issues on the switch. So addictive and so many unlockables. By the devs of Ziggurat
I just love seeing the like amount roll over from 599 to 600 when I press it. There is some weird satisfaction there that you cant get anywhere else. lol great video guys. I agree with all these titles accept binding of Isaac The GOAT. I've never played that one before. I plan to once i get the time.
If you want Rogue-like/lites I would suggest Pirate Outlaws, Wildfrost, or Slay The Spire. If you want a straight forward experience (story-driven) then any of the Voice of Cards games, Inscryption (rogue-lite-ish), or Foretales
I bought the binding of isaac when it first came out on switch and i hated it but i picked it up again like 8 months later and now i have isaac everything from rugs to phone cases ive been obsessed I bought the collectors box on switch and bought it again on pc it’s such a good game
Binding of Isaac and Rogue Legacy were of my first rogues back in the day, but I've put more time into Dead Cells and Risk of Rain than any others. Still have lots of love for Moonlighter, Hades, and Slay the Spire. I don't think it's ever coming to switch, but I also really enjoyed FTL: Faster Than Light!

One of my favourite roguelikes not mentioned was Skul: The Hero Slayer. Anyone not tried it, please do.
I deleted it by mistake now everytime I re-upload it, it's in Chinese with no option to change to Emglish. WTF???
I love rogue lites. Just picked up both doom hunters and ember knights. Might be new favorites for me. But one favorite is getsufumaden: undying moon. And death run TV loads of fun.
Many interesting games! One of my favourites is Void Bastards. Finnished it three times now
Children of Morta is one of my favorite games because of you guys! Even with just a single narrator I loved the story! Fuckin wicked ass family and you can play all of them! So naturally I love Hades! Excited for the sequel!
Yes, Children of Morta is delightful! I vote for this one too!
The story was incredible
YESSS. Just got this on the sale and loving it. Was a pleasant surprise just how well done the game is, and the art style is stunning!
Little tip for Bad North, take care of your archers. 🏹🏹🏹
@@sparkypack thanks. I'll try and keep that in mind when I eventually get round to it.
Hey thank you mate! Mark
Love Mana Spark! Mark
Thanks, added it to my wishlist, seems to be really cool and out of the box
Seconded. Going Under is just a charmer! It's nice to have the pocket roguelike experience. A roguelike that has all the progression systems and mechanics but also ends...I like the replayability but not every single one of them can be my sole focus until the second coming!
I just got it on sale a while ago for a crazy low price but I haven't had a chance to play it yet. I have heard great things though.
Love me some Neon Abyss...it's great to have my little duckling pack trail behind through the levels
Neon Abyss is so good.
Still haven't beat the game, but that hasn't slowed me down
Another amazing game! Have 200 hrs on it and once beat it once. One of my all time favorites, it never gets old. And 2 player split screen as well
Really underrated. I played most of the roguelikes/lites. I can agree that Caveblazers sits top 3 on my favorite list. Also try Nuclearthrone, addictive as hell
My top three would've been Dead Cells, Moonlighter, and Darkest Dungeon, with Hades as a very close fourth
Have you tried Children of Morta?
@@AxLWake I have! I completed it, but never had the urge to go back to it. I think I would have enjoyed it more of I liked how all the family members felt to play. I only really enjoyed the archer daughter and dagger son.
I would just play Darkest Dungeon just to hear the narrator. Imagine that guy narrating your day to day life.
Such a shame to see no mention of Neon Abyss
(I know there are gajillions of games hidden on the eShop so not judging)…
… But it is a great game, and worthy of a mention 👍👍👍
Love that game. It's in my top 3 most played
It's one of my top played games...and I only had the demo!
You forgot Rogue Heroes: Ruins of Tasos. My favorite game that I am HOOKED in right now!
That's made another video next week ;)
Oh man another one I have to add to my favourites list.
As someone who has around 1300 hours in Binding Of Isaac on PC, my no 1 is still Hades. Not just the amazing combat, but the story around it, the way they made it work with the format is just perfect.
Hades combat is so dull.
Mhm. Brotato is pretty awesome 😋
@@nicked_fenyx its so simple but also very addictive! 😋
@@nicked_fenyx I can't wait to try the next difficulty settings. They say new and different enemies appear and I'm ready for the slaughter!
"Darkest Dungeon" is the best! I've put hundreds of hours. Also "Don't Starve"! Is one of my all time favourite.
Death Road to Canada is amazing, I strongly recommend it.
Maybe the best couch co op rougelite, even better for that than Isaac. Just make your friends/family as characters to add to the game.
Hades for the loop and story, Dead Cells for gameplay and content
You need to add Army of Ruin to this list! What an addicitive and fun game
YAS! I second this. SO many unlockables, I'm 40 hrs in and I'm about half way through. Very relaxing gameplay as well
I would add another to the Honourable Mentions which is Monster Train; and I get where Slay the Spire would be a 5th place.
So awesome looking… and talking about a roguelite with a story.. this is it!
If I may add, Rising Hell is an interesting game to add to the list
Surely Children of Morta should've got a mention.
The binding of Isaac will never lose podium, it was one of the first Rogue likes I played and I never got tired of it
Still play it on my Vita
Own all but two of these and a lot more to boot. Been a big fan of the genre for a long time due to its easy pick-up-and-play style and replayability. I will say one big thing tho that I have a huge grievance with...the biggest tragedy of the Switch's roguelike library is the fact that we still haven't gotten a port of Cryptark. If you know, you know. If you don't...well I hope I've intrigued you enough to go try it on another console or pc, and am quite confident you'll agree with me afterwards
I am intrigued. I will research it now.
I wished more of the rougelikes did what cult of the lamb did. I would have loved for doomsday hunters for instance to have something to come back to after a run. Gonna give risk of rain 1 and 2 a try.
Yesss. I loved Cult of the Lamb
All 3 main spots are absolutly perfect. Just spot on! :D
all the games on this list are good times for sure! For me, Hades, Dead Cell, Darkest Dungeon is probably the must pickup even at full price. Each of them are easily 100 hours that you'll never get back lol
Yeeeaaaaahhhh I was waiting for an update! Thank you guys! Keep up the amazing and talented good work!
Honestly it's kindof one of the charms of the game, just seeing how broken you can make things, kind of like you can do on Warframe if you've ever spent enough time on it (unfortunately I have)
found it hard to se what was going on in handheld tbh
@@huzcer I could understand that. I have so much experience in the game that it's no longer an issue for me haha. But at the very least, the performance is absolutely fine until you get to extremely late endless levels
@@smitty7326 yes performance was OK ish but not suited to handheld as it was too busy and text was small also
You guys should check out One Step from Eden; it's essentially Mega Man Battle Network but a roguelike.
I heard that it was very unbalanced in the end. Did you find any issue? I really want to play that one but even on sale it's not a deep deep sale
@@pheonix9372 They did add some updates since last I played; such as a difficulty setting.
Own most of these. Wanted Risk of Rain 1 but waited for the remstered which I hope to see soon.
Oh very cool. Mark
Into the breach is great! Mark
Oh another good and small roguelike is Undermine. Was really addicted to it until finished everything
Hades, Dead Cells and Darkest Dungeon!! 😋
Glorious games man
@@SwitchUpYt Glorious! Hazzaah! 😋
Yes, meh, OH YEAH!!!!
@@sevensyns7732 oooh yeaaahh! 😆
You mentioned Bad North! 🥳 That game had me fixed for hours and hours.
Enter the Gungeon is really good, but I really prefer Nuclear Thrones, even just for the music. The game just never goes on sale tho, so i bought it full price considering I have it for Steam already ...i just dont have a SteamDeck
Dead Cells for sure, I didn't dig Hades that much as everyone else. Im gonna have to check out Binding of Isaac. Great review, thanks!
I'm not good with roguelike games but I really like 2d platformer action rogue likes like Dead Cell what looks beautiful game. 🔥🔥
RAD is a roguelike I've actually finished. Great top down apocalyptic 90s inspired game and very easy to understand but difficult to master
I love RAD. It's one of those games I go back to every so often and find myself hooked on all over again. Definitely an underrated gem.
Agree but the performance on the switch is pretty bad
the praise for isaac is appreciated :D
Hades is my most favourite game of all time ❤
Wildfrost is excellently balanced. There is soon to be an update on switch that makes it more welcoming to new players. Alot of the issues with it tends to be that it's mechanics aren't explained and cause you to lose runs from something you didn't think worked that way. This is being improved.
It's personally my game of the year and I'd recommend you retry it once version 1.06a comes to the switch
how the hell did ember knights only make it to the 10th place?
People are really going me up about Ember Knights!!
Glen and Mark you guys should do a day in the life video series would be absolutely cool 🎉
That would be cool! Mark
I have to go with Hades as my top pick, but great list! I respect your choices 😄
Hades didn't grab me immediately honestly. I got Hades and Little Noah the same day and put Hades down to play Noah... blasphemy I know.
I'm getting back into it though because I love the look and sound design!
Wizard of legend is a great roguelike too.. so many options!
Dead Cells is the best to me, I bought the game back then when it was in alpha or whatever the state was back then, I just keep coming back to it.
Also it's made by an indie french studio so yeah .. Cocorico
I got loop hero for free from epic games and I'm loving it so far!
Yeah it's really cool! Mark
If Cult of the Lamb can be considered a roguelike, then it's definitely in my top 3 with Hades and Dead Cells.
Glen and Mark need to be announced as smash character
What's smash?
SPELUNKY 1 & 2, Revita, FlintHook, Tangledeep, Vagante, Prinny Presents: ZHP, Blazing Beaks, Crown Trick, Dragon Fang Z, Caveblazers.
Children of Morta is brillant in my opinion.
I love a roguelike. Thanks for the heads up. There are a couple on this list that I've never played. Have a great one!
Hades and Vampire Survivors are the 2 I've easily put the most time into.
Personally:
1. Hades
2. Dead Cells
3. Binding of Issac
4. Rogue Legacy 2
5. Slay The Spite
6. Skul: The Hero Slayer
7. Risk Of Rain 2
8. Doomsday Hunters
9. Darkest Dungeon
10. Enter The Gungeon
Honorable Mention: Children Of Morta
1 - Curse of the Dead Gods
2 - Gods Will Fall
3 - Hades
Army of Ruin! Guys please cover this, probably the best survivors-like, and zero performance issues on the switch. So addictive and so many unlockables. By the devs of Ziggurat
I don't have any specific ones that come to mind but I appreciate the suggestions both in the video and comments!
In my opinion I would do at least two different lists one for turn based and one for action
You could easily do that you're right. Mark
@@SwitchUpYt great video by the way.
I prefer the action roguelite myself. Great top 3 as well I own all of them
I just love seeing the like amount roll over from 599 to 600 when I press it. There is some weird satisfaction there that you cant get anywhere else. lol great video guys. I agree with all these titles accept binding of Isaac The GOAT. I've never played that one before. I plan to once i get the time.
Im getting interested on card/deck build games, what you guys recommend to start?
If you want Rogue-like/lites I would suggest Pirate Outlaws, Wildfrost, or Slay The Spire.
If you want a straight forward experience (story-driven) then any of the Voice of Cards games, Inscryption (rogue-lite-ish), or Foretales
Wildfrost, hands down. Just try the demo
Thanks for the recommendations
