    Slay the Spire was a slow but steady burn for me. I definitely struggled to build a long-lasting deck at first, but the mechanics really started to click after 5-6 hours of progressively more successful runs.
    The amount of drama on my first successful "finish" was insane. Single digits worth of HP was the difference between me vanquishing the final boss, and having to start the entire run over 😅

    Although Steamworld Quest isn't a roguelike, it's the game that got me into this genre. I've put 100s of hours into slay the spire and Monster train is catching up. I've enjoyed a lot on this list. I need to return to griftlands sometime and can't wait to grab inscryption when I get through a little bit of my backlog.

    Ever since the days of “Magic the Gathering” back in the 90’s I’ve been intimidated by Deck Builders. The closest I ever came to one in 30 years was “Gwent” during the Witcher game. Just recently however I picked up “Inscription”. This decision based off of both the great reviews (not least of all SwitchCorner) and the “if you’re intimidated by deck builders, this is a great starting point” compliment many reviewers gave. It is now at the top of my queue and I genuinely excited to play it.

  • @nicked_fenyx
    @nicked_fenyx Год назад +2

    Interesting list, with lots of great games. As a huge fan of the genre, I would have put Roguebook quite a bit higher (probably fourth for a general audience, although it's third for me after StS and Dicey Dungeons). Monster Train is enjoyable and quite popular for a reason - it just doesn't click with me as much as the others I mentioned (though it would still be fourth on my list, as I do enjoy it from time to time).
    I feel like too many people slept on Roguebook at launch, since it really didn't get much attention. Hopefully more people will give it a try, as it really does do something different with the genre and offers countless potential combos/strategies thanks to playing with multiple characters at once whose cards interact in various ways, plus variations in how you upgrade both the characters and your cards that are different from what I've seen in other card-baed roguelikes. It's one of those "easy to learn, super fun to master" type of games. Great stuff overall.

  • @SeraphsWing

    • @DizzyDiddy
      @DizzyDiddy Год назад +2

      I haven't played Monster Train yet, but you probably are starting from a point of expertise in the genre thanks to your Slay the Spire experience. I had a similar experience with Dicey Dungeons. I've probably put in about 10 hours and haven't lost a run yet. I have over 1200 hours in Slay the Spire on Switch. I'm up to Ascension 1 on Steam and haven't lost a run on that platform yet, but I still regularly lose runs at Ascension 20 on Switch of course.
      That said, I have heard that Monster Train is easier overall than Slay the Spire. But I'm sure there's still plenty of challenge at higher difficulties.

    I am sooooo bad at these games. I have monster train and I have put like 5 hours into it and I suck hahaha. Never know what meshes any tips?!

      You just need to keep playing and trying new things. Eventually you start to discover synergies and begin to understand what makes you successful. It also really helps to learn the enemies and to know what to expect. Just takes time. If you want to take a bit of a shortcut you could watch runs by other players and learn from them. But a lot of the fun comes from learning on your own so I would encourage you to just stick with it.

    I prefer Roguebook and Monster Slayers over Slay the Spire and Monster Train.
