Not just Slayer, but thrash as a legitimate genre of music. Back in the eighties around the time of the crossover, thrash was king. It was the pinnacle that people aligned themselves to, aimed for, or were influenced by, either directly or indirectly.
Guys with short hair, or no hair, began growing their hair long and going to see metal bands other than Motörhead. Long hairs got into hardcore and started slamming, (before it got called moshing), and stagediving.
And then then genre labels appeared at the same time when the goal was to be the fastest in the land. I remember an early interview with Voivod when they said they played "nuclear metal" so they could stand out from the pack. And the race to be the fastest in the land led to grind. And being more brutal led to death. And that's when thrash was on the ropes. Then along came the second wave of black metal when death had become stale, formulaic, and over saturated. Just like thrash.
      But now it's back

In the 1990's I was deeply involved in the local DC/MD/VA music scene, and often Slayer fans, as others, felt distanced. Extreme music is highly innovative and often very misunderstood by those being politically correct. Artistic freedom brings innovation. Thankfully, and with sincere thanks to the Smithsonian Institution professionals recognizing Slayers' place in our National Heritage!

I honestly can't think of another metal from their generation puts out as much emotion and plays with as much feeling, I feel Slayer's best songs in my heart and I can't say that about too many other bands of any genre.
