@@raymondmassie4898 Bernie said "There was a period when I was going through that whole ‘got to get back to my roots’ thing, which spawned a lot of like-minded songs in the early days, this being one of them. I don’t believe I was ever turning my back on success or saying I didn’t want it. I just don’t believe I was ever that naïve. I think I was just hoping that maybe there was a happy medium way to exist successfully in a more tranquil setting. My only naiveté, I guess, was believing I could do it so early on. I had to travel a long road and visit the school of hard knocks before I could come even close to achieving that goal."

It is hard for me to believe that someone has never heard of Elton.. but then again his music was the soundtrack of my youth.. in the 70s, you could not go 15 minutes without hearing a song of his on the radio. We used to call the radio station and request "Razor Face", or some other deep cut that did not get as much air time. They don't make music like that anymore, in my opinion.

Elton John is the "librettist", Bernie Taupin is the "lyricist" in that team. So Elton is singing Bernie’s words to his own music. So don’t take the words to mean that they necessarily reflect John’s emotions. Elton has been a flamboyant lover of his high life for decades. He may yearn for a quieter life nowadays, he was mostly loving his celebrity when this song came out.

Absolutely love this album. One of the few albums my parents, my three older brothers and I could all enjoy. Liked it so much we had it on vinyl and the 8-track version.

Just for the record, Elton John is British. He is referred to as “Sir Elton John” because he received that honor from England for his outstanding contributions to music. How can you have arrived here and not know who he is? He’s a legend! I still thoroughly enjoy your reactions. It’s great for me to see you appreciate the music I grew up with. Check out “Someone Saved my Life” or “Don’t Let the Sun go Down on Me”! Keep em coming. ✌️

You're correct that he was knighted for his contributions to music, but the honour was also given due to his charitable work, most notably the work done by the Elton John AIDS Foundation, but also for a number of other charitable endeavors he's been a part of over the years, including performing at Live Aid, The Prince's Trust concerts, and a number of other benefits.

Bernie Taupin wrote all of Elton’s lyrics, a true master at words. He would send them to Elton to put to music, but it was basically poetry put to song. Tiny Dancer is a must do!

He taught himself to play piano and yes he is Sir Elton John. Knighted by Queen Elizabeth in the 80s if I remember correctly

Yes ... and no. He was a musical prodigy and started playing at age three. At seven, he started formal piano lessons and at 11 he won a scholarship to London's Royal Academy of Music.
Not that I could have told you most of that without doing some research (I knew about the classical training, but not the rest).

@Lady Elton22 - you beat me, but only by a few years! I discovered him when I was 14 ... back in the 80s.

@Lady Elton22 - I have trouble understanding how anyone could find Elton and then lose interest ...
I've raised a fan, too. To the point that she took me to see him when he was in Sydney recently. And dressed up as him for a party she attended.

I adore how naive and adorable you were... still adorable. "Is he from Kansas?". Amber you tried so hard to figure out that damn movie. 😁
