  • Just because the hemi engine is nearly synonymous with Chrysler and now Dodge, doesn't mean that other companies didn't experiment with this style of engine. In fact, Toyota mass produced a V8 engine in the 1960s to power a new upscale four door sedan to compete with the big American cars that many wealthy Japanese businessmen were driving at the time. There's a pretty good chance that you've never even heard of Toyota's Hemi V8.

Hemi was all about valve angle & size (better flow), room for domed pistons and central spark plug location which was conducive to faster burn and pressure rise. Not just about surface area that could possibly be wetted by fuel. Hemi combustion chambers sometimes have more surface area than wedge shaped. Don’t just go with the first thing that pops up on Google for your research.

    • @nicholassilvestri1804

The old school gen 2 Hemi’s legitimately had pistons that fit into the dome like a glove, with the deepest valve reliefs you’ve ever seen on a production engine. They were shit on the street (easily fouled plugs), but screamed and walked around anything else with top end performance, save for the 454 BBC 😈… which was a semi-hemi in terms of the valve angle layout

  • @cromBumny
    @cromBumny Год назад +16

Hemis have less "valve shrouding", that is when the valve opens up the valve edges move away from the cylender wall, allowing equal flow all around the valve edge. The hemi also has a more consistent and smoother combustion chamber than most it's competitions cast heads. Easier to cut a smooth round chamber into a head than an odd shape that can only be cast. the smooth simple shape allows for more consitancy. Its smooth shape also fights detonation caused by irregularities. Hemis also have a better valve overlap performance. That's when both valves are briefly open at the same time. The side wall fueling "advantage" issue I've never heard of, will have to think about that

Bryce, too many scientific flaws. Chrysler's 426ci vs Toyota's 159ci doesn't mean anything. Hemi's are about volumetric efficiency via valve size not combustion chamber wetted surface. The real comparison is 2.6 liters=158.6 ci@145 ft-lbs = 0.91 ft-lbs/ci VS 426ci = 6.98 liters @472 ft-lbs = 1.1 ft/lbs/ci Compression ratio and rpm covers most of the remaining difference. 0.91 for a luxury car vs 1.1 for a hot rod is fair.

The 426 wasn't the best for street use. I would take a 440 for a daily back then. The Hemi is perfect for a race car not so good for the street car. Head gasket over heating it's more of wide open throttle kind of engine. But I give my left nut for a old Himi engine though.

The hemispherical design allows high flow and even compression. It can, and should run high RPM, because there is no squish area. Squish areas promote swirl, but create hot spots and pre ignition. Hemis can run higher compression and flow better at high RPM, but fuel will puddle easier at low RPM

Actually, he was completely correct. The shape of a hemi head chamber focuses the energy toward the center point of the hemisphere. The domed piston is perfectly shaped to have the most surface area to be hit by the now very excited air molecules that are trying to reach the center of the hemisphere. Maximizing the energy transfer to the piston and minimizing the energy transfer to the cylinder wall.

As for reliability, the first gen Chrysler hemi was good for around 2000 hp with boost and nitro.
It would be fun to maximize one of these for fun, just to see how for one could go with it.
The Daimler 2.5 liter v8 hemi made more power than the Toyota and 3.5 liter BMW engine of the time.

5:39 you refer to the "introduction of overhead valves" (and fuel injection) on the 5V. I'd be extremely surprised if the earlier engines didn't have overhead valves: I'm not sure how you could have a hemi with side valves.

This earlier engine seems to have somewhat of a hybrid combustion chamber shape. In the early engine the valves are side-by-side & in-line, & therefore doesn’t have the advantages of angled valves you would see in a hemispherical head. The combustion chambers in this early Toyota engine are somewhat of a bowl shape. It’s ‘trying’ to be a hemi, but in reality it isn’t. The GMC V6's weren't rare in the day (1960 -1974) but they are today. I'm not sure where you come up with the "underpowered" remark as they were competitive with other sixes of the time in HP/torque per cubic inch.
They were very reliable. Their biggest problem was fuel consumption. The large bore/short stroke created an unfavorable surface to volume ratio, thus more heat was rejected from the combustion process lowering overall thermal efficiency. Compared to a 292 Chevy or a 300 Ford, they used more fuel.
I have several of these engines and my dump truck is powered by one of the larger ones as well. Best damn heavy duty gasoline truck engines every made.

Don’t just go with the first thing that pops up on Google for your research!!

  • @groomlake51

Explosions are spherical by nature like the Hemi combustion chamber. The large chamber allows big valves witch is almost always the main restriction in all poppet valve engines. The intake and exhaust valve location allows a linear path in one direction. The huge valve size has big curtain area @ low lift cuz3.14 ! Geometry moves both valve away from the cylinder wall in a chamber that has little to no valve shrouding close to the seat. That’s why a Mopar Hemi is so good at peak power numbers. Modern engine is a semi/Hemi with dual quench pads where the spark plugs enter the chamber. A tight quench is a game changer you might call a knock suppressor. Allowing lower octane fuel to pay well with high static comp numbers. The quench pads location in the Hemi chamber are square and directly over both ends of the wrist pin. So no asymmetrical load contributed to excessive piston “rock” @TDC aka piston slap.

Something you said is rather confusing. Ya stated that the Toyota Hemi V8 was 57% smaller than the Chrysler/Dodge 426 Hemi, but made 88% of the power of the Chrysler/Dodge 426 Hemi. Is that correct? Because you then stated that if the Toyota had been 426 cu in, it would have made 374 hp. Yet the Chrysler 426 Hemi was "officially rated 425 hp" at something around 5,500 rpm ( or 5,800 rpm? ). Of course we all know that Chrysler 426 Hemi made much more power than that when tweaked to run 7,000 rpm's, because it proved it could still keep building hp as the rpm's were raised. But let's stick with the 425 hp for argument's sake. If the Toyota version was 57% of the Chrysler version in size, yet made 88% of the power of the Chrysler 426, then if the Toyota version had been 426 cu in........wouldn't that be far more than "374 hp"??? Actually you are half right, a true hemi is named as such as the intake and exhaust valves are angled directly to the respective port, The CC can be rounded or not depends on the design. Look at any V8 American overhead valve engine, all the valves are run horizontally down the block, neither valve closer to its respective port they are all in a line. A hemi turns this 90* where the intake is high up on the Inner side of the cylinder (Closer to the camshaft), where the intake port usually is. The exhaust is lower to the outside of the block (away from the camshaft), where the exhaust port is. Also the rocker geometry is usually different as well as both are usually actuated closer to the center of the head Intake is usually turned opposite to the exhaust. Basically instead of the valves looking like this - - - - (imaging each dash as two valves for one cylinder) A hemi is like this : : : :, where each set of valves are turned towards the proper port. I know what you are thinking, I just described every overhead cam engine in existence for valve layout... and I did. You see without the hemi most of the current superefficient combustion chambers would not exist Most geometry would not be properly set for max efficiency and Multiple valves (more than 2 per cylinder) would not be possible. Also the ford overhead cam V8, would not run so well, if the hemi didn't Pioneer the geometry first

All they needed to do was add a supercharger! Even if it was only 3-4psi boost,
If I designed a hemi V8 or V6, it would basically start with a LS or LT bottom end, the difference would be in the heads, dohc with VVT, and variable duration, about 3", 3.25", and 3.5" stroke, with 3.9", 4", and 4.125" bore, with a crankcase, capable of fitting a 4.280" stroke without issues, or mods, and a bore of 4.280", with sleeves, or bored to 4.160" the heads having 4valve hemi style, for the larger displacements, larger output, and 2valves for the smaller, direct and port injection, with direct only capable of supporting about 380hp and 6800-7200 , the dual injection, on more race spec naturally breathing, 600+/- hp 8500+/- rpm, squeeze in the largest possible valves the bore allows, the small bore with larger valves would require clearance of the block, only the largest bore would have extra clearance, a turbocharged modified version should be capable of in excess of 1500 HP, with 8 bolts per cylinder, 2 of those would be long studs and screw into the main journal webbing of the front main, and each in-between, with 20mm threads, like the inner mains, 20 mm thread with 24mm head and nut, the the bolts or studs screw into a solid aluminum that is a part of the main webbing, not to the deck like old engines, that distort the cylinder bores, the bore spacing would be enough to allow 1.5-2mm between the bores in the water jacket , with the inside of the water jacket, anodized or some coating that prevents corrosion! Extreme temperature Epoxy if nothing else, the external main bolts would be 10mm, with shouldered 15mm heads, about 20mm at the shoulder, and about 40-60mmlong, the pan rail being about 12mm at the thinnest, the mains and cylinder floors, the 30mm deck, 40mm wide mains, all ties together, the water jackets sealed. In by 3mm walls with 6mm ribs, and mount areas engine mounts, and bell housing mounting area, and the front of the block around 30mm in the most important areas, with reliefs, and ribbing to reinforce the thin areas, example between the bell housing mount, and the deck, with each bank connected by a 8mm rib between cylinders! With the front and rear being about 12mm with 6mm bolts on the valley cover, the valley that holds crank case venting, and oil passages to the heads, the oil pump bolting on to the main caps , similar to a Honda k24, , with the ability to mount the pump in front or rear, with the sump, the pump and it's bracket reinforcing the main caps, can be mounted with pump either way, front or rear, along with the oil pan, with the sump front or rear the pan with fins to help with cooling, and windage slightly in the pan, the valve covers similar, smooth across the top, fins on the sides, with the option of two plugs per cylinder, with dual output coils, possibly 3per cylinder, on the largest bore 4v heads, 1 in center, 1 on the outer side of the valves, (testing to see if there is any gains!) But either center plug, or two outer at least, with a 9.5:1 minimum compression, the valve angle would likely need to be nearly flat, 12°-18° to get the compression up on the smaller engines, the valve stems would be longer than common engines, to allow the ports to allow the intake and exhaust to flow straight into the top of the valve, and the exhaust to exit straight from the cylinder to the manifold, without hitting the port roof with anything more than a glance! Similar to the Chrysler 340, it will be difficult to fit all this into the heads, but maybe with cad help, the specs can be pushed and pulled until everything fits the space! Crazy dreams, if I had to pick, I'd say the mid. To upper 300 cid , 4.125" bore, with 3.4" stroke , the VVT,. And vdur, should allow it to run like a diesel down low, and make tons of power up high, with variable runners, going from near 18" runners to basically no runner only tiny trumpets, with a door that blocks the main in trance to the short runner, the default position would be the short runner down low, with the long runner running into the short at an angle, no door would allow both to be used , the long runner up high, short down low, in the plenum, close the opening to the plenum, to simplify thing's to not have 8-16 doors, or forget all that and just use 4"-6" trumpets in a plenum, basically funnels, strong enough to handle 4bar of boost, the VVT and variable duration, should slow plenty of low end/high end power, sorry to ramble, great video, I love history!
