Thank you for your content. I am a retired firefighter and a couple of additions to your videos. Fire Extinguishers do make a mess. We keep a Fire Blanket in our RV and our Kitchen at home. It can cover a Grease Fire on the Stove, a Toaster even a Crockpot without any mess. Also WHEN your fire extinguisher is out of date, don't just throw it away. This is a Good Time to train with the one you are going to throw away. You will not have the same results as an IN DATE and NEWER extinguisher, however going over your proceedures actually using it, is great for Muscle Memory.

So, save your money and stick with the Tried and True ABC extinguishers, GOT IT 👍🏽

I was trained in fire systems and safety as a maintenance person. Part of our dry chemical fire extinguisher checks had to include turning the unit upside down and tapping on the bottom with a piece of wood, etc, then shake vigorously a few times to loosen the material It will settle and clump, and then it won't function properly. If you attempt to use one and only propellant gas and no or little chemical comes out pound it against the ground, etc. Dry chem extinguishers are junk the first time you squeeze the trigger no matter how much you spray because the grains keep the valve from resealing, and they will invariably leak down. CO2 and probably the water-based spray cans usually do not. However, any fire extinguisher should be replaced/refilled if used at all. You can use the remainder for training before it leaks down. CO2 is the cheapest to refill, will infiltrate areas hard to reach with other types, kill grease fires, do not clump or degrade, are non conductive, leave no mess, and can be used to kill a runaway Diesel if sprayed into the intake. However, they aren't the best solution or are recommended for all fires. They scatter debris and do not coat against re-ignition. Check with recommendations. Many fire departments have extinguisher training days for free. They use the expired ones people have turned in. Good idea!

Thanks for sharing and testing these out - we were taught to keep a fire extinguisher in the bedroom as a fire is common during the night while asleep and this gives you a way to extinguish the fire on your way to the nearest exit - in our RV we keep a 2.5 lb extinguisher on each side of the bed and a 5lb at the main door for easy access and in case of a fire in the engine bay or our toad. we have the fire spray by the kitchen as well just in case.

Fantastic - sounds like you guys are covered with active extinguishers. Have you looked into any of the passive systems like Proteng?

@@rvgearandfar not yet, but we have considered it for our engine bay.

Extremely Helpful. 1. I didn't know about the little pop-up thing, i.e., I didn't know that the fire extingusher I had was useless. 2. I didn't know that the powder spray--beyond controlling the fire--will go everywhere else causing extraordinarily complicated clean up. (who cares about extraordinary clean-up if it saves your home, vs, quickly extinguishing a basic stove fire) And your 2 is 1, And 1 is none if the 1 fails, is brillliantly put. So true, you have nothing "0," zero, nada, "up the creek" if 1 fails. 2 is 1. Thank you for the awesome education.

Very good videos and reminder, indeed. QUES: should you shake (2-3 times) the Fire Spray (red container) before using?
Also, would have MINimum of two ABC exting in the RV (near the front and rear/bathroom), IMO (not owner at this time).!
    Y'all Be Safe!

Thanks! The can instructions do not say to shake - but I think I do every time I pick up anything aerosol and I definitely shook them during these tests so while it doesn't appear necessary it also doesn't hurt.

Great job on the reviews and I can attest to how important they are have on board. We had a brake fire on our tow dolly and if we didn’t have an extinguisher on board. I truly believe we could have lost everything that night.

    Good video!
We have both types in our motorhome. Main reason for getting the First Akert sprsy was to prevent damage. The material used in the powder extinguishers is highly corrosive.
All the electronic items you mentioned will likely need to be replaced after using a powder extinguisher inside the RV.

Did any of the grease splash back when you used the spray on it? Obviously one stands back, but who knows what anomaly one may encounter in a real scenario.

    • @rvgearandfar
      @rvgearandfar  6 месяцев назад

Not that I recall - but making sure to spray from the appropriate distance is key - I assume you'll get splashing if you're too close.

You're scaring the heck out of me leaning over that fire. If this was an actual emergency fire and you were in a panic you are going to end up huring yourself.
And then you leaned over the fire even more when using the BC spray. Please stop demonstrating how to put out a fire as you're teaching everyone what not to do. On the grease fire your head is OVER the fire. Stop it!!
