    Had this problem with my Wolverine - the film was not being pulled through. My solution was to only thread the film on the back end using only the first two rollers on the left - making it easier for the take-up reel to pull the film. It worked, and still works, perfectly - making me wonder why the other two rollers are even there. If this happens again, I'll try adjusting the plates.

      Thank you for sharing how you fixed your problem. Sometimes, I skip the first couple of rollers when the take up reel is not working properly. This mainly happens with 400 ft reels. With a reel that kept getting stuck I ended up using the rewind setup (eg no rollers) and it’s working. At first I just skipped a couple of rollers but the film got stuck partway through. I think there’s something wrong with sections of the film so any amount of successful digitizing is appreciated.

    Also had this problem but I couldn't turn the damn screws even with a "00" Philips. Used tape to hold it down. Worked for about 5-6 7" reels, then started up again. Finally got at least the right screw turned just a 1/4 turn to increase downward pressure. So far working like a charm. (I have an unbelievable amount of film to to do, all 7" reels) Thank You!!! Was ready to use projector and film it but while this may be painfully slow, the results are better.

      I used to use a projector years ago and though it may be faster, when the bulb burst it was pretty expensive to replace. I hated doing it that way. The screws are a bit tough and if you screw them out too far, then they wont go back in. I learned that the hard way. Just a small turn like you did does the trick. Thank you very much for your comment and please make sure to subscribe if you have not already!

    I have had two of these units and also the Pro version. I have transferred around two thousand films to date. They best way to solve this problem is not to use the film rewind arm. It doesn’t have the electronics that will handle this problem. I tried everything that was possible. You will never have a problem if you simply let the film drop into a box instead of using the rewind arm. I then use an old projector to rewind the film, very simple and easy. Also have a usb laptop fan that I have blue-tacked to the unit before the film hits the light box, I clean the film thoroughly first. Nothing more annoying that to get to the end of a reel and find a dirty mark has been recorded.

    Is there a way to “loosen” the reel arm that the original film is a attached too? Or make it turn smoother? I find that my machine will not advance that reel sometimes unless I loosen the film in it (and who wants to sit there and do that?). Would W-D 40 be ok to use on the spindle?

    • @TheMediaNerdMT

      The arm that the reel is attached to is free turning. There is not any kind of motor attached to it. You could try some W-D 40 I suppose but make sure you don't get any on the film since it is a dissolvent as well as a lubricant. Thank you for watching and subscribing!

    Question Mark. My scans are getting jittery and I believe the culprit is the pressplate being too loose. I have a Wolverine Pro, and when the film gate is open, there is no screwdriver on earth that can access the pressplate screws because of their angle and the machine's outer lip (where the 8 and super 8 switch is). How do you actually get a screwdriver to angle into the pressplate's screws' philips heads?

    I have a reel which was cut a bit too wide so it's good to know this may be a fixable problem. I have a (vaguely) related question: is it possible to scan a single frame? Meaning, with the automatic frame advance turned off? I have a segment of a fragile film which has been mangled in a projector many moons ago and now has a number of transverse creases resulting in a zigzag-like part. This certainly won't go through the scanner but if it was possible to simply do this portion of the film _manually advancing_ frame by frame, I could salvage the footage. Can this be done? For example, can the advance needle-thingy be temporarily deactivated or removed?

    • @TheMediaNerdMT
      @TheMediaNerdMT  2 года назад +1

      Hi JanPBtest! Great question. Unless you are an engineer who can take things apart and then put them back again, I would not try messing with the advance needle. However, I do have an idea. If you have a flatbed scanner like the Epson Perfection V600, which has a slide scanner setting, you can use that but it will take a while. I have used this trick with little micro fiche type film. Place the film on the scanner and use plastic tape to hold it in place if you want. It needs to be lined up where you would place the 35mm film but do not use the 35mm holder. Scan at a very high resolution since you will need to blow up the frames in your editing program. You will be able to scan a lot of frames at one time. Once scanned, you will need to select each individual frame and import them into your editing program. That should do the trick! Regarding the creases in your film: I did see a guy take wrinkles out of film by using an iron on low heat and a towel as a buffer. I have not tried this but if you decide to, try it on a small portion. I hope that this helps! Please subscribe if you have not already, it would be greatly appreciated!!!

    I have several reels that get stuck. After seeing your video and reading the comments, I played around with various setups. Using only the last roller on the right side seems to work most of the time, but sometimes using none on that side is the only thing that has worked. When I adjust the frame alignment, I can tell whether the film will advance. Getting the film to advance correctly seems rather random, and sometimes it’s advancing well but suddenly stops (if the film was spliced I can’t tell). I think that something must be creating too much tension.

    • @TheMediaNerdMT
      @TheMediaNerdMT  10 месяцев назад +1

      Some times when the film is cut (physically) it can be off by a hair width wise and that is all that it takes for it to not go through properly. Did you clean the film first? The cleaner will also lube up the film to help it run a bit better.

      Adding a slightly unrelated question but one that affects the movement of the film through the scanner-not sure where the question belongs: We have a many old super 8 reels. Some of the film reels don’t work with the wolverine’s adapter - the spool size is slightly smaller or a slightly different shape and doesn’t work with the super 8 adapter.

      I have noticed that all of these types of machines start to get louder with use. Some make a grinding sound as well and I just have to tune it out. None of them seem to take a taped splice very well. The only splice that seems to go through smoothly are the ones that use the cement type splice that you would see on a developed reel connecting the leader to the film. There are splice machines that one can purchase that makes these solid splices but I have never used one. I did look into them and they are $$$.

    Hello, I found your video by doing a search for my problem. Mine is a little strange. Ive digitized about 30 reels flawlessly ( minus a quirk when a spliced tape goes through but thats not the issue here ). This morning Im converting and 3 minutes of film goes through without a problem and then I come to another scene ( a snowing skiing scene ) and I really want to digitize this. Well the Wolverine digitizer doesnt wont to advance the film on through. It goes back and forth on the same frame. I give it a gentle tug to help it through. That doesnt work. I pull the pressure plate lid up and advance the film myself a foot or two and replace the lid. Still same problem. Now Im confused. so I start the film over from the very front of leader. Again the film advances flawlessly until it again gets to the snow scene. So I take that reel off and do another reel. Runs flawlessly. I look again at the problemed reel of film and the area that it starts to refuse to advance and even the areas that AFTER the problem begins ( and yet it wont advance in those areas ) and there is no torn sprocket holes nor any tape or cement so I am left looking for answers. Do you have any for me please ? Thank you ! I have subscribed .

    • @TheMediaNerdMT

      I think the issue may be width of the film. • @TheMediaNerdMT
      @TheMediaNerdMT  9 месяцев назад

      Sorry I didn't mention that. I was thinking that the ski film was just a small section of one reel that was spliced in, not its own reel. Regular 8 and Super 8 are different. That is why there is a switch. Most super 8 reels are on a reel that has a larger hole about the diameter of a marker. Regular 8 has a hole the diameter of a pencil. However, the reels could be interchanged. The sprocket holes are the true identifier of the type of film. Super 8 can also have sound which is identified by a brown strip (typically) the same color as an audio cassette that runs on other side of the hole sprockets.
