- Dave tutorial about how to work a Wolverine Moviemaker Pro to digitize 8mm home movies. Ignore the shaky hands. I was a bit nervous doing this spontaneously and without rehearsal.
I am so glad I just found your video! Every step of setting up the film on this machine was clearly demonstrated! Also, the photographer did a great job of focusing on all the details of the set up process as it was explained. I recently acquired my families 1960s 8mm film and am researching all the best ways of transferring the precious memories to them. Thank you so very much!!
Sorry Dave, your holes commentary on the 8mm and Super 8 films are incorrect. It´s the opposite that you state. Square and bigger holes in the 8 mm films, and smaller and rectangular in the Super 8 films.

Does this digitizer use the ULTRA type of SD/SDHC as long it is 32GB or less? thank you Dave
Rereading the Wolverine instruction booklet, the direction is to use an SD/SDHC card 32GB or less. The word ULTRA does not appear and a warning says the use of any other card may cause error messages. To learn whether ULTRA cards are compatible, I'd ask Wolverine support directly.

Reading through the comments I see several posts about problems playing some films. I have to ask, are you folks cleaning your decades old films before you transfer them? There are various methods for cleaning old media. I deal mostly with audio tape and I often clean my old tapes with a product called Hoppe's 9 Silicone Gun Cloth. Not only does it clean the tape but it also re-lubricates them for smooth playback and improved sound. I strongly suggest looking into proper solutions for cleaning these old films before gunking up your machine with grit, grime, mold, etc. This could be why some machines are malfunctioning.
Last year I started hitting the flea markets again on weekends. I mostly an audio collector, records, tapes, CDs but I have been coming across old films too. Having a fascination with one-of-a-kind recordings I was wondering if such a machine for film was available, and here it is. Thank you for the tutorial.
I am getting a lot of "knocking"...I adjusted the plate and it runs for a minute then strted to make noise and stop. what is wrong? 8mm thanks
Thanks Dave. The short horse clip showed alot of bubbling. The tension of the film in the scanner is too loose. Also, you have far too many folders on your desktop.
Sure needs to get all the folders off the desktop and I hope he has a separate drive to store his videos and other docs, not on the C drive. This was an entertaining video. None of these bargain capture machines are very good, but they are better than nothing. The professional scanning services are very expensive, but the good ones are using scanners that cost $5000 and much more. Good idea to view the capture screen on a larger monitor. 👍

I am also having a "knocking" sound eventually on my wolverine, what can cause this noise ?
Sorry for your trouble. And also sorry to say I don't know how to fix it. Don't recall having that happen.
A piece of scotch tape. Use it to hold down the digitizer lid. I have seen this on Kodak’s reel’s machine also.
What about Hi8 video cassettes?
This machine converts film to digital files. It's not compatible with videotape.
I solved the problem of missing light for film illumination after I received a prompt answer from Wolverine Support team! The problem was in a loose cable connection. I opened the rear cover, located the cable, unplugged it re-installed it and it works now!

Why not feed the leader that way you wouldn't be touching the film causing grease from your fingers marking the film
Interesting, before my father past he paid to have all of our family films on a state of the art VCR tape. Thankfully years later I was able to transfer from the VCR tape to a memory stick before the tape rotted after time. Thanks for sharing.
It's not a great idea to remove the sd card while the scanner is on. Virtualdub can append the segments if you don't have a decent video edit.

Well done David. Just like you I have 8mm & super 8mm from the 1950s - 1970s, many hours of films. They were all digitalized many years ago and I edited the transfers via Final Cut Express where I diligently created a sound track -- sound FX, music, graphics etc -- the results were large files which required double density DVDs in order to distribute. The only problem I had was the transfers were done via VHS tape which I then installed as digital files in my computer. I would like to transfer once more, following your method, in order to get a higher resolution etc through this direct digital transfer. My only question -- is the Wolverine somehow limited to a 32gig card?
I have sold the machine on eBay because I have no further use for it and don't have the instruction booklet that might have your answer. But I recollect that I also tried to save the digital files on a much larger memory card and it did not work. So I'm inclined to say it is likely that is the maximum allowed. I transferred digitized movies to my computer regularly so I never maxed out the memory card.

Excellent video Dave! I have a encountered a serious problem with my Wolverine Moviemaker Pro I purchased half a year ago. I made some 10 reels with excellent results, but then the white light for film illumination has gone and off. I thought that maybe it was overheated and I turned off the device and waited for half an hour and tried again and again and it does not work. What do you suggest?
Sorry to hear about your problem. Obviously a serious one. It never happened to me so I have no idea how to replace or repair the light. Good luck.

These machines are a lot of fun. I got mine last year and so-far have done about 2000' of double 8 and Super 8 movie film. While the final product may not be as good as the work done by some professional film copiers, doing it yourself is enjoyable and also it eliminates the possibility of losing your films in the mail. I recently did about 1000' of Vietnam combat film a family had stored away. The man who took the films passed away years ago. The family was afraid to send the films through the mail and they didn't have a projector to view them. They were thrilled that I could do it for them. I used good software to remove noise, camera shake, correct lighting, etc.. I did it free and the work was very fulfilling. Nice video, thanks
Great story. Glad you had the skills to help. I also found the process fun. And putting all the films on my RUclips channel permits my family's descendants to view home movies of their ancestors forever. Or until RUclips goes extinct.

Just purchased this machine. Your video was very helpful to get us started. Apparently, I am going to need some software to "stitch" clips together. Can you suggest a simple to use, inexpensive software? I don't plan on doing anything very sophisticated in this area.
Could also use a little instruction on using the Sharpness and Exposure settings. Nothing seems to change when we select that and use the arrow keys.
Sorry. Since I sold the machine and no longer have instructions I can't remember the adjustments remedies. I use Pinnacle digital editing software. It has a lot of features. Perhaps you'd wish for a simpler editing suite.

Wish I could give the fix magically, but I don't have experience with this problem. The only thing that comes to mind is that it's set to Super 8 and the sprockets are out of kilter. I'm sure you already tried that. Good luck!

why does the film always start out rough… it jumps and makes a double click noice instead of the well running single click… you can see it is clicking when the picture is only half in the frame. after a minute or 2 it runs normally.
Sorry you"re having that problem. I don't recall experiencing that glitch. Usually it ran smoothly a few seconds after inserting the film onto the deck. Good luck.
....and the sound?
Are you saying you can't hear the video? The 8mm movies the Wolverine digitizes contain no sound.
Most of the old 8mm film did not contain sound. The film that did have sound has a gold strip on the edge.
