    RCM I am a retired man in the UK who learnt about photography in the days of 120 and 35mm cameras (and, would you believe, have some experience with using a 5 x 4 film plate camera !). I.T. and I don't get on very well as when I was a young man, everything was steam driven, so I.T. protocols aren't in my blood 😂. I'm researching getting a modern camera for occasional use and the E-M10 Mk IV has come to my attention, especially for the compact size and onboard image stablisation (as I have always had trouble holding a camera steady ! Of all the on-line reviews I have watched, yours has been by far and away the best and most practical. You speak at a measured pace (useful for my aging brain to keep up) and you have covered many of the (photograpic) elements that will be relevant to my use. Also providing me an understanding of the camera controls, which will resonate with me bearing in mind my dinosaur upbringing. Thank you Sir. A very professional production from you. And not making the mistake of assuming viewers know nearly as much as you from the outset. .

    Great review; best in-depth overview I've seen so far. Thank you.
    I just picked this camera up, used, to replace my aging E-M5. It's great that the E-M10 can stand-in as a video camera, but without CAF, line in, clean HDMI out, and 10-bit, I don't expect to use it much for video work. It's going to be a budget travel camera instead, mainly for stills and portraits, so the EVF is fairly important to me.
    I've been putting off buying this camera, hoping the OM-5 would nail it, but the perfect camera will have to wait for another day I guess. I have a GH5S as a video camera, but due to lousy auto focus and a hefty size, it mainly sits on a tripod in the home studio.

    • @RadCameraMan
      @RadCameraMan  Год назад +1

      Thanks, by the way the E-M10 IV does have C-AF however it uses contrast detect autofocus instead of phase detect, nevertheless I ended up buying the E-M5 III to satisfy some of the shortcomings with this camera, so I have both now. I did a comparison video of the two and in some areas the EM10 is actually better: ruclips.net/video/WS8teL2Mtns/видео.html
      Regarding the GH5S, that is one camera I really want to buy because of its larger sensor providing over-sampled footage as well as a wider field of view with the same lenses but I think the compromise of removing sensor stabilisation in favour of a larger sensor makes it a studio type of camera as it needs to be operated on a tripod or some form of additional stabilisation gear. I am thinking of either the OM-5 or GH5S as my next camera but that purchase will have to wait 💸 😂

    Thanks for the video. Are you still using this camera, and how is the buffer in it? If you take quick successive shots is there any lag with the camera saving the pics to the card?

    • @RadCameraMan
      @RadCameraMan  7 месяцев назад

      I still use the E-M10 IV and I find it to be fast enough when taking pictures in quick succession although I use the fastest V90 SD cards that I could find which are substantially more expensive than the older V30 cards even with a smaller capacity. So I am somewhat immune to any potential lag with writing because of the fast SD cards that I use. I think with any camera if the write speed appears to be slow, it is usually because of a slow memory card rather than the limitation of the camera buffer. So I haven't noticed any significant lag when taking pictures but if you are using slow SD cards then it will obviously be an issue. Sometimes when I create demo video for a camera I intentionally use a small and old SD card to highlight certain aspects such as the number of frames remaining or amount of video left in minutes. This is because when I use the larger faster SD cards the camera will not display numbers beyond 9999, so I cannot demonstrate what I intend. Hence if you see anywhere in any of my videos there appears to be a lag, pay attention to the remaining memory storage which you will see is a small number which indicates that I was intentionally using an old slow SD card. 07:13

      @@RadCameraMan thank you so much for a very thorough response. It's much appreciated. Reason why I asked is I recently had a Fujifilm XT 30 mark II, and when I took a picture.,sometimes I would get "saving to card", and then you could take another pic...and I had a v90 in the camera. That really bugged me.

    • @RadCameraMan
      @RadCameraMan  7 месяцев назад

      @@mden2490 oh yes, I can imagine that would become frustrating. With all Olympus cameras including the E-M10 IV, the worst case scenario is that the shooting speed will slow down once the buffer becomes full. So instead of shooting 15 frames per second, it will become a lower number but you can still hold down the shutter button and the camera will continue to take photos at a slower rate while in the background the camera continues to write the images to the SD card. Nevertheless with a V90 UHS-II SD card, I don't think you will ever encounter any issues.

    aside from the excellent walkthrough of the camera features, this is one of the very few videos out there that provides an accurate view of the camera body size and material. In other videos the camera tends to end up looking bigger than it is really is, and it is impossible to sense the feel/texture of grip, buttons, and material. Nicely done.

      @@RadCameraMan I am indeed! I would love to buy one of the higher end models but no tilt screen is a deal breaker. Aside from EP7 (only in Japan), this is the only 20MP Olympus with tilt. I’ve had too many frustrations with the articulating screen on PEN-F despite how much I tried to love it and work with it. So in a way, I am upgrading from E-PL7

    • @RadCameraMan

      I completely agree with your take on tilt screens vs flip out screens. I prefer the tilt screens as well but it seems like most camera makers are opting for flip out screens.

    Nice video! Wondering if you can confirm this menu quirk or perhaps just my camera? Seems the touch menu is partially "Crippled". Touch screen works in ", Focus, Quick Menu", some others, but not able to scroll or select items in main menu. Easy enough to use the key pad, just seems odd? Thanks.

    • @RadCameraMan
      @RadCameraMan  Месяц назад

      Yes, this is how the camera operates. The main menu is the old menu system which is available on all Olympus cameras. This main menu does not support touch functionality.
      The quick menu and the other menu variants which are newer menu systems support touch functionality.

    Does the camera automatically clean itself with the supersonic wave filter or do you manually activate that feature from the menu? If so, where on the menu can i activate it?

    • @RadCameraMan
      @RadCameraMan  9 месяцев назад +1

      It does it automatically itself. To my knowledge there is not an option in the menu to activate it since it is automated. I have seen other cameras that allow control over the sensor cleaning through the menu system but this is not the case for this camera.

    Hi,
    Nice review. I have a question. In self-timer mode, how do you enable the counting-down beeping sound? Mine just counts down 3, 2, 1, and takes a shot without an audio queue.
    Most cameras I have owned emit counting down beeping/sound.

    • @RadCameraMan
      @RadCameraMan  9 месяцев назад

      To my knowledge it is not possible to have a beeping sound when using the self timer option. However the LED light on the front of the camera will turn on for a period when using the self timer and it starts blinking for the last 2 seconds before the timer runs out and the photograph is taken. So if the light is on, the timer is counting down but you still have some time and when the light starts blinking you have less than two seconds before a picture is taken.
      I know this doesn't address your requirement but I thought I mention it in case it helps with providing an indication as to when the photo will be taken.
