I also got this phone. I was using Huawei Mate 20 pro before. When I took a photo of my son with the Huawei, it never got the color of his eye right. With Sony it nails it every time and also the Eye Autofocus helps to keep him in focus while he is moving. I am happy with the camera performance. Will be testing it more.

edge detection is really bad (worse than many midrange smartphones) and the stabilization from all lenses seems bad... I thought sony had one of the best video stabilization because of their amazing dslm`s but their stabilization seems to be on of the worst of all the flagship smartphones I know.I like the color balance and sharpness of the main camera though!design of the device and it`s screen seem pretty good.

What they're doing now is what they did in the first decade of the 00s when they're tv division was losing money. They were arrogant and thought the sony name alone could sell TVs, during that time Samsung and LG were able to goble up a good amount of the market. They had a chance to be a big player in '13 and' 14, but management screwed that up big time. It would've been nice if they had teamed up with Google.
I'm quite impressed with the image quality, dynamic range is great with no halos around high contrast scenes as many others do. The HDR video looks great too, with nice stabilization, but the 4K recording needs improved stabilization, maybe via a software update. Night shots are well improved too, with natural looks and not overprocessing. Great job Sony!
@KeonXD Sony usually has a really good video recording quality, that's why I find this one here not good. The 1080p samples I saw at night for example is pretty great. Even the HDR video looks more stabilized than the normal 4K one, which is strange in my opinion

Its not the first time camera division worked with Sony Mobile. Its just the first time they really worked together. lol. The other times they kinda didnt. They did the software, but did everything to sabotage for Sony Mobile. Wich seemed to have worked. Thanks to all critism of the cameras during the years, SONY mobiles is so small that people sometimes thinks the Sony Mobile is no more.

Watching on my XZ2 Premium. I love this phone and the Xperia 1 looks to be taking it up another notch. I'm new to Sony phones but I must say the build quality is second to none. Once Sony dials in the software on the Xperia 1 with future updates. Those cameras are going to be some on the best for 2019/20.
Yep. The shortcomings of the X1 will become so obvious, it would be better not to have that comparison. Sony keep deliberately making the cameras sub-par to not compete with their standalone cameras. Well fuck them, other manufacturers use Sony's own sensors and are making smartphones cameras that wipe the floor with the X1. Also, they need to listen to customers. Who the hell wants to put a small cricket bat in their pocket with sharp corners.... You put up a shiny overpriced turd up for sale... don't be surprised when no one buys it....
Sony aint reallyy finished tweaking the camera software yet, what I heard, and are still tweaking during updates. SO it will be even better. :-) By the way, why is the slowmotion so pixelated?

@@CharllesC78 what dxomark says is pathetic ... whoever has xz3 knows well that he doesn't have the same quality as a Z5. XZ2 premium has not been tested by them, but seeing the reviews and trying it out personally has nothing to envy to current smartphones (except for the huawei night mode).

14 years of using Sony devices no need to ask about my opinion especially comparing with rivals that explodes or finding your self not special while many others may carry these garbage, when carrying a Sony and you find your self with high respective people and you carry your phone to take shots or talk you can find all eyes gaze on you to see the WOW that you are carrying. If you have the XZ3 then I would personally cancel it, especially when the next flagship phone is released sometime Q3/Q4 of this year Then you can make a decision to get this one or the next flagship

Why do you reviewers never ever give us some HDRon photo samples?! It will just be the usual complaints about Sonys auto mode, "oh its worse dynamic range and overblown photos than this or that phone". Give us some HDR photos for christs sake, its there in manual, just two fingertips away.
Actually, I expected more for camera, it makes me sad. Working together with Alpha and the first time with OIS+EIS but i was shocked with horrible stabilization in 4K recording in every test review. Seen slow in switching camera . Dynamic range should be better than this. I heard Xperia 1 is delay to sell bcoz of camera software. I hope they are going to release a firmware update soon to fix the camera software especially in stabilization.
My only real gripe is that I want a 4K 60 fps option for recording outdoor sports. The camera overall looks great, I haven't seen many examples of low light shots but if it is comparable to the XZ2 Premium tech then this should be great.
I don't know. I have the XZ2 premium and while the dynamic didn't impress in video reviews. Seeing it in real life makes it seems like it's good enough

Thanks for your review, I think Sony made huge mis reading the market. If this phone focus for film people, considering more pro features like global shutter, bokeh, log recording. I don't think so many people are interested in film feature, the most people are interested ease of use and great image steabilization.

Anthony Richard I think the bitrates does not change during the video. Usually Sony phones record about 52-54Mbps for 4K 30 fps SDR .... The 4K HDR HLG 24fps of XZ2 had lower bitrate ... Cinema Pro app will change shutter speed and iso if necessary during the recording if you leave on automatic ...
I hope future Sony phones will have copper heat pipes inside of them so they would remain cooler during use. Don't get me wrong, they don't have overheating issues but Samsung devices and just recently OnePlus has started having copper heat pipes inside of them with their latest OnePlus 7 pro. Having your device run cooler is always a good thing
ive been shooting in manual mode, and all my friends thought i used a pro camera :)) samsung and iphone always produce really warm yellowy pics, personally i like how sony screen and camera produces color :D

Hamid RS Hi Hamid, thanks for the info! Actually as far as I know, no phone on the market is able to play Netflix in 4K, according to Netflix’s test pattern video. You could search for “test pattern”, then play it, and check the upper right corner for what resolution it’s actually playing!
Cinema Pro looks amazing, cool shots and great quality. In photos, sharpness is missing but if they got good mapping, simple adjustment in phone can get it done. Also I think this camera setup is great at good conditions, hardware camera button is big plus, manual mod and different looking android from other rivals.

Could you please shed some light on it, Have you experienced such a thing? How consistent is it? I want to switch to a sony mobile phone, from my understanding they will release a new xperia called xz4 in autumn ! Just received my Xperia 1 and I have to say I am very pleased with it. On the front camera though there seems to be like a yellow/warm and automatic softer effect, not like a natural colour I had on my Z5 Premium or the less soft effect. Is it supposed to be like this? My white balance etc seems to be on the same settings as my previous phone.
Was there any particular reason why they didn't use the 48mp camera? I know that it downsamples images in most phones but it seems to take some pretty good shots.
Why does it not have a 48 pixel sensor and night mode... Next year it will have af, raw, and better sensory, software from their camera division for the first time... Software patches usually enhances existing phones unlike their competitors... Still expensive...

Actually, I expected more for camera, it makes me sad. Working together with Alpha and the first time with OIS+EIS but i was shocked with horrible stabilization in 4K recording in every test review. Seen slow in switching camera . Dynamic range should be better than this. I heard Xperia 1 is delay to sell bcoz of camera software. I hope they are going to release a firmware update soon to fix the camera software especially in stabilization.
My only real gripe is that I want a 4K 60 fps option for recording outdoor sports.
The camera overall looks great, I haven't seen many examples of low light shots but if it is comparable to the XZ2 Premium tech then this should be great.

I don't know. I have the XZ2 premium and while the dynamic didn't impress in video reviews. Seeing it in real life makes it seems like it's good enough

I really don't like the s10 camera, the selfie camera is bad and the night photos are better on my Nokia 7 with a Google camera mod

Thanks for your review, I think Sony made huge mis reading the market. If this phone focus for film people, considering more pro features like global shutter, bokeh, log recording. I don't think so many people are interested in film feature, the most people are interested ease of use and great image steabilization.

Anthony Richard I think the bitrates does not change during the video. Usually Sony phones record about 52-54Mbps for 4K 30 fps SDR .... The 4K HDR HLG 24fps of XZ2 had lower bitrate ... Cinema Pro app will change shutter speed and iso if necessary during the recording if you leave on automatic ...
I hope future Sony phones will have copper heat pipes inside of them so they would remain cooler during use. Don't get me wrong, they don't have overheating issues but Samsung devices and just recently OnePlus has started having copper heat pipes inside of them with their latest OnePlus 7 pro. Having your device run cooler is always a good thing

ive been shooting in manual mode, and all my friends thought i used a pro camera :)) samsung and iphone always produce really warm yellowy pics, personally i like how sony screen and camera produces color :D

Hamid RS Hi Hamid, thanks for the info! Actually as far as I know, no phone on the market is able to play Netflix in 4K, according to Netflix’s test pattern video. You could search for “test pattern”, then play it, and check the upper right corner for what resolution it’s actually playing!

Cinema Pro looks amazing, cool shots and great quality. In photos, sharpness is missing but if they got good mapping, simple adjustment in phone can get it done. Also I think this camera setup is great at good conditions, hardware camera button is big plus, manual mod and different looking android from other rivals.

Hello, nice review as always. I have seen a few reviews that complain about frame skipping during video recording on all sensors and in all resolutions. Could you please shed some light on it, Have you experienced such a thing? How consistent is it? Also if you could try third party camera apps specially Google camera since some of the reviewers have confirmed that the camera 2api is now unlocked on Xperia 1. Cheers
I want to switch to a sony mobile phone, from my understanding they will release a new xperia called xz4 in autumn ! If thats so would it be better to wait for it to launch or it wont be much different from xperia 1 ? I wanna know which of them would be the best phone from their product range . Thanks
xz series is dead...they do the new naming scheme, xperia 5 is recent launch, and not a lot different than xperia 1

From reddit, u can capture RAW dng using Lightroom app. Also, it seems that xperia 1 finally will be able to support gcam.

Just received my Xperia 1 and I have to say I am very pleased with it. On the front camera though there seems to be like a yellow/warm and automatic softer effect, not like a natural colour I had on my Z5 Premium or the less soft effect. Is it supposed to be like this? My white balance etc seems to be on the same settings as my previous phone.
Was there any particular reason why they didn't use the 48mp camera? I know that it downsamples images in most phones but it seems to take some pretty good shots.

Why does it not have a 48 pixel sensor and night mode... Next year it will have af, raw, and better sensory, software from their camera division for the first time... Software patches usually enhances existing phones unlike their competitors... Still expensive...
