Sony had been doing it first, things on smartphones for decades without boasting or gimmick. Whilst the rest followed, promoting well and acting like they're some soft of revolutionary despite they can do what Sony have done it first on many things like first FullHD display then first Water Resist and so on, but none of them come close to offer 4K UltraHD display to actually make sense of their "4K capable cameras'. I'm sure Sony could care less.
However (to me at least) it seems this is one of the worst looking/ built Xperias ever or sdcond to the original Z. And I've been an avid sony user since 2004's Sony Ericsson V800
@@DMDaskalakis design preferences are very subjective. You have the right to like whatever you want. However considering the other rounded screen and notch designs it still stands out for me in terms of design and for media consumption. I agree that golden era of sony Ericsson was the best.
@@xPandamon I don't know about your preferences, but I never liked the any of screens on Galaxy or iPhone till the date. For me screen is first priority because my 80% phone usage is media. The music player and the video quality have always been better on Sony. IPhone too warm colors and galaxy too saturated colors. When comes to long run Sony always wins because of their hardware quality and software optimization. It is also the fact that they have very low sales and they suck at marketing.

Bought an Xperia 1 coming from my OnePlus 5. Never held such an ergonomically well though out smartphone, and everything makes sense. Loved my OP5, but this is amazing. The only thing which bums me out a bit; for the the price 128gb seems a tad on the low side and the battery (while not at all bad in terms of usage), could have been bigger.
Oh yeah... And those of us that did pre order it got the Sony 1000xm3 headphones with it as a bundle ✌ best deal ever when it comes to flagship smartphones? 😎

Apparently it will, but it won't be a replacement. It'll be a smaller Xperia 1. I've bought Xperia 1 as my personal handset even though the Xperia 2 rumours were around. No regrets. Like when XZ2 came out and then XZ3 I've regretted that I didn't get XZ3, where they've improved the design and slapped on OLED panel. Then the same happened with XZ2 Premium and it's f/1.6 dual-camera setup as opposed to single f/2.0 on XZ3, but now with X1 there's nothing else I would miss if they'd introduce an actual replacement for it in September and not just a smaller device.

Some people doesn't understand the HDR feature, saying "it looks washed out" lol. On such time I definitely know they only try the phone like in 2 hours and went and made a vid. Also, you're the first guy that tells me about the "shadow" gif implementation on the 3D creators app, that does look funny, Works best with people we know rather than random bloke in the internet, but yeah, it's funny as hell 😂
It definitely looks better than the XZ2 and XZ3 with its design. But I'm not a fan of all the added features, I preferred the bare essentials software they had in the past. I also think 16:9 was the best aspect ratio, which is why I still use the XZ Premium.
Well I had LG g5 and I liked it, was one of the first phones with the wide angle lense! I had so much fun with it. But both my LG G4 and g5 had a poor battery life. In the end I got Sony xz1 compact! I must say LG also experiments a lot which is not bad but sometimes it's a real gimmick you just think please no experiments just make it right! Sony also joint LG with this new aspect ratio...All I wanted from them another compact flagship just like xz1c but better camera and more storage!! They were quite mean with xz1c it has just 32 GB
Im more concerened on long term reliabilty and durability...its an OLED screen, which means its prone to burn-in... im sticking with my XZ Premium until then.

Disappointed it doesn't have wireless charging because I have a XZ Premium that stopped charging properly at first until it stopped charging completely, leaving it dead. If I were to get a new flagship phone I'd try to get one with wireless charging, which is why I'm considering a Samsung Note 9 or something similar.
There's only one problem with this phone: it should've been 1cm shorter. The upper part of the screen is unreachable one handed. Also, it wouldn't fit in any pocket. Add an audio jack, and you'll have a killer phone, best buy among the flagships. Why do they always seem to overlook basic usability FACTS? This screen format is just stup1d for 99% of time.
Did get mine like 24h ago, still trying it out. Will have to run it for a while to even speak about it tho. But so far both pros and cons, like most phones..:)
Sony doesn't do adverts these days. But I'm surprised how many people were waiting for xperia 1. If they kick in a little marketing effort, trust me, they will sell more units than the S10.
For me personally, it's tough to get past a $950 price tag for "only" and I say that relative to what's becoming the norm nowadays, 128 GB storage and 6 GB RAM. All that money is being sunk into the display, (maybe camera too), and I don't know that, again for me personally, that I have enough of "an eye" to notice the difference between the displays... or that the Sony display is so much better as to be worth giving up the other hardware specs, and pay a huge premium just for a kick butt display.
Hey again mate. How is your accelerometer on your Xperia 1? I've tried mine but it doesn't seem to work. If you go to Xperia Tests in Settings you can test it out. I tried using it on an app and noticed it didn't work then tried it on Xperia Tests and it doesn't seem to be doing anything.
Hi mate. I've just received my Xperia 1 and I have to say I am very pleased with it. My previous phone was the Z5 Premium though so it's kind of old, so might be the reason why I am very pleased with the Xperia 1 as a whole lol. didn't support it. My question is on the front camera there seems to be like a yellow/warm and automatic softer effect, not like a natural colour I had on my Z5 Premium or the less soft effect. Is it supposed to be like this? I don't think it's anything to do with the camera settings as it seems to happen on app cameras as well such as Instagram, Snapchat etc My white balance etc seems to be on the same settings as my previous phone
@@andreid330 Thanks for the reply. The soft skin feature is turned off so I don't know why it's giving the appearance still. The photos don't look as warm/soft when I actually look at them in the album, it is only when taking the photos is when it gives this appearance. Not too sure what to do
Great review mate! One very important question for me is this, Can you manually control the focus recording a video with the "normal" 60 fps mode? I saw you could in the cinema app but what about the other basically. I take a lot of night photos and videos, especially on the summer and thunderstorms. The Xperia XZ1 did not have this feature to my disappointment, So my next phone must have this feature :P

No in it's stock firm (Cinema pro doesn't have 60fps option), stock camera doesn't allow you to focus manually, but you can download filmic pro, which is a paid app, but allows you to do everything you want. Fossil Q Explorist Gen 3. I really wanted the Samsung watch, but then again Fossil has been making watches for past 20 years, there was a deal where it was £99, it has a speaker and microphone (a must for me), Amoled panel, looks like a watch, runs very smoothly and has latest android Wear (Android H) update :) I'm working on a video review for it. Works perfectly fine with Xperia 1 (before it was paired to Xiaomi Mi 9 and worked fine as well).
Appreciate the review, my wife loves Sony phones, she is currently on the XZ 2, apart from a crap camera, she loves it. I'm tempting her to join me with a Galaxy Note 9, (best phone I have ever owned), but she will most likely stay with Sony, and most likely I will get her to go for this one.
It's really each to their own. Here, my wife is a huge Samsung fanboy (fan girl?), bigger than the Samsung CEO himself, and she always had Notes. I'm (personally) a Sony person, but I admit that Cameras were not always on par with other phones. But X1 is a completely different beast. I feel like it's Sony attempt at we either get everything right or we're leaving the market. This is actually the first phone that the Bravia, Alpha, Cine Alta, PlayStation team have worked together on, thanks to new head of Sony Mobile Division. It's not the best phone on the market, it doesn't take the best pictures (even Xiaomi Mi 9 that I also own has slight edge) but it's definitely the best phone Sony has ever made and finally something that can truly compete with other flagships. It looks like they've stopped cutting corners, camera has real f/1.6 aperture, phone has 128GB of FAST storage, the cinema pro app really stands out and fake bokeh/portrait/live focus finally works like a charm. Regardless if you're watching 4K content on it, the screen quality is amazing, and speakers can be (clearly) heard in other rooms. And it won't die :) However regardless of how personally I like Sony or not, I want my videos to be unbiased, so there are some shortcomings like lack of wireless charging, no facial recognition or face unlock, some phones support up to 27W charging, and Sony has just started with 18W. I'm making a separate video about that as well.

I think with the Shortcomings, me personally, I'm not fussed about Wireless Charging if they give that insane screen and sound quality, facial recognition in my opinion is pretty pointless, fingerprint is always the best. My last sony for the Xperia Z5, and I absolutely loved that phone, and they really fell over their own feet after that, weather sealed was gone, battery was gone, quality was gone, camera was just a no go. The XZ2 my wife is is a stunning looking phone and has a battery that is out lasting my Note 9. I previously had the Huawei P20 Pro, and the Note 9 (in my eyes) has a better camera by a long way. With the charging power, I'm gonna say Sony is being clever, why have so much power to charge your phone when realistically, all people are doing is damaging and technically risking their own life over powering charge into their phones. Batteries were designed to charge at a reasonable and safe speed, not boosted to keep convenience in peoples (not that busy to be more important than safety) lives. No need to knock 1 hour off a charge to get 100% extra battery and risk over charging, heating or whatever it will probably cause a battery. The Sony X1 to be fair, is something I have been keeping my eyes on for a while, it looks stunning, regardless of the height of the device, you can still bring the notification bar down from anywhere, plus while I remember, the Samsung OneUI has this feature too, I noticed you missed that out on your video. The OneUI so far, is something I think other companies need to address, especially with the height of the X1. I cannot wait to get my hands on it and see your next video too. Sounds better than Galaxy S10 to be honest.

I've noticed you cannot switch lenses in manual mode,this is terrible . Also self timer is only available in manual mode and superwide lens on auto . Also you can only manual focus when in manual mode this means only manual focus on the 26mm lens . This is a complete shambles of a camera at the moment.
I’ve reached out to Sony about that, and I know that they’re working on a fix for this for stock camera. For the time being I would recommend using Cinema Pro app, which allows You to choose any lens You want, use manual focus, set shutter speed etc and then capture photos by using “Grab” button, which captures 8Mpix stills. It’s not ideal, but it is a temporary way around the problem.
Considering it constantly rains in Manchester I can easily use it with brightness on 75%, with rare sun I ramp it up to 100%. That’s all outdoors. It is very bright.
As much as I really love the idea of Pixel phones, they're plagued with a lot of issues, from screen burns, flickering to crackling speakers, battery drains. On top of that when I had my very own 2XL (and when I reviewed 3 I've noticed the same thing), every time you take a portrait picture, or any picture, it creates 2 folders (with random names, they're not timestamps), so if you use any file manager as opposed to Google photos, to find them on your phone, you'll come across 20.000 random named folders, that have 2 photos each, before portrait and after portrait faux bokeh has been applied. What's more, when you delete a picture from Google Photos, the folder stays, but it's empty. Drove me nuts as I use Microsoft OneDrive...

The thing with Sony phones is that you get pretty clean software, as in less cluttered, and XZ3 was first 3rd party phone to rock Android 9 Pie. They’re pretty up to date with software updates (XZ3 and 1 are both running on June security update), however even though You get Pie update, You don’t get all the pixel features. Digital Wellbeing is still missing, and there’s no call screening. On the other hand You get beautiful display, absolutely amazing speakers, expandable memory with 128GB to start with, and a lot of Sony own features. I personally tend to choose Sony phones over competition due to mainly stock software, and special hardware, as opposed to some weird notches, punch holes, apps doubling up (like on Samsung, Samsung Browser + Google Chrome, Samsung Galaxy Apps + Google Play Store, Samsung Health + Google Fit) etc, but the choice is Yours. If you feel that Pixel is the right device for you and you really like it’s experience then there’s no real reason to jump ship.

Just buy a Micro SD card. Supports upto 1TB. Just bought myself a 512GB card on Amazon sale for £60 bargain!

This could be because the z5 premium selfie camera had a much higher megapixel count, so it could capture more detail but with alot more noise
Select the Selfie Camera , then press settings (the cog)-> then deselect soft skin effect.

Probably some early camera software gremlins, it’s the same on mine, but then perfect in Album and Google Photos

I take a lot of night photos and videos, especially on the summer and thunderstorms. The Xperia XZ1 did not have this feature to my disappointment, So my next phone must have this feature :P

To answer your question, yes and no.
No in it's stock firm (Cinema pro doesn't have 60fps option), stock camera doesn't allow you to focus manually, but you can download filmic pro, which is a paid app, but allows you to do everything you want. Fossil Q Explorist Gen 3. I really wanted the Samsung watch, but then again Fossil has been making watches for past 20 years, there was a deal where it was £99, it has a speaker and microphone (a must for me), Amoled panel, looks like a watch, runs very smoothly and has latest android Wear (Android H) update :) I'm working on a video review for it. Works perfectly fine with Xperia 1 (before it was paired to Xiaomi Mi 9 and worked fine as well).

Appreciate the review, my wife loves Sony phones, she is currently on the XZ 2, apart from a crap camera, she loves it. I'm tempting her to join me with a Galaxy Note 9, (best phone I have ever owned), but she will most likely stay with Sony, and most likely I will get her to go for this one.
It's really each to their own. Here, my wife is a huge Samsung fanboy (fan girl?), bigger than the Samsung CEO himself, and she always had Notes. I'm (personally) a Sony person, but I admit that Cameras were not always on par with other phones. But X1 is a completely different beast. I feel like it's Sony attempt at we either get everything right or we're leaving the market. This is actually the first phone that the Bravia, Alpha, Cine Alta, PlayStation team have worked together on, thanks to new head of Sony Mobile Division. It's not the best phone on the market, it doesn't take the best pictures (even Xiaomi Mi 9 that I also own has slight edge) but it's definitely the best phone Sony has ever made and finally something that can truly compete with other flagships. It looks like they've stopped cutting corners, camera has real f/1.6 aperture, phone has 128GB of FAST storage, the cinema pro app really stands out and fake bokeh/portrait/live focus finally works like a charm. Regardless if you're watching 4K content on it, the screen quality is amazing, and speakers can be (clearly) heard in other rooms.
And it won't die :)
However regardless of how personally I like Sony or not, I want my videos to be unbiased, so there are some shortcomings like lack of wireless charging, no facial recognition or face unlock, some phones support up to 27W charging, and Sony has just started with 18W. I'm making a separate video about that as well.
@@QuickExpertReviews I completely get what you are saying. I think with the Shortcomings, me personally, I'm not fussed about Wireless Charging if they give that insane screen and sound quality, facial recognition in my opinion is pretty pointless, fingerprint is always the best. My last sony for the Xperia Z5, and I absolutely loved that phone, and they really fell over their own feet after that, weather sealed was gone, battery was gone, quality was gone, camera was just a no go. The XZ2 my wife is is a stunning looking phone and has a battery that is out lasting my Note 9. I previously had the Huawei P20 Pro, and the Note 9 (in my eyes) has a better camera by a long way.
With the charging power, I'm gonna say Sony is being clever, why have so much power to charge your phone when realistically, all people are doing is damaging and technically risking their own life over powering charge into their phones. Batteries were designed to charge at a reasonable and safe speed, not boosted to keep convenience in peoples (not that busy to be more important than safety) lives. No need to knock 1 hour off a charge to get 100% extra battery and risk over charging, heating or whatever it will probably cause a battery.
The Sony X1 to be fair, is something I have been keeping my eyes on for a while, it looks stunning, regardless of the height of the device, you can still bring the notification bar down from anywhere, plus while I remember, the Samsung OneUI has this feature too, I noticed you missed that out on your video. The OneUI so far, is something I think other companies need to address, especially with the height of the X1.
I cannot wait to get my hands on it and see your next video too. Sounds better than Galaxy S10 to be honest.

No, no ghost touches. Didn't have any ghost touches with XZ3 either, but j do remember there was an issue with XZ2.

I've noticed you cannot switch lenses in manual mode,this is terrible .
Also self timer is only available in manual mode and superwide lens on auto .
Also you can only manual focus when in manual mode this means only manual focus on the 26mm lens .
This is a complete shambles of a camera at the moment.
I’ve reached out to Sony about that, and I know that they’re working on a fix for this for stock camera. For the time being I would recommend using Cinema Pro app, which allows You to choose any lens You want, use manual focus, set shutter speed etc and then capture photos by using “Grab” button, which captures 8Mpix stills. It’s not ideal, but it is a temporary way around the problem.

Considering it constantly rains in Manchester I can easily use it with brightness on 75%, with rare sun I ramp it up to 100%. That’s all outdoors. It is very bright.

As much as I really love the idea of Pixel phones, they're plagued with a lot of issues, from screen burns, flickering to crackling speakers, battery drains. On top of that when I had my very own 2XL (and when I reviewed 3 I've noticed the same thing), every time you take a portrait picture, or any picture, it creates 2 folders (with random names, they're not timestamps), so if you use any file manager as opposed to Google photos, to find them on your phone, you'll come across 20.000 random named folders, that have 2 photos each, before portrait and after portrait faux bokeh has been applied. What's more, when you delete a picture from Google Photos, the folder stays, but it's empty. Drove me nuts as I use Microsoft OneDrive...

The thing with Sony phones is that you get pretty clean software, as in less cluttered, and XZ3 was first 3rd party phone to rock Android 9 Pie. They’re pretty up to date with software updates (XZ3 and 1 are both running on June security update), however even though You get Pie update, You don’t get all the pixel features. Digital Wellbeing is still missing, and there’s no call screening. On the other hand You get beautiful display, absolutely amazing speakers, expandable memory with 128GB to start with, and a lot of Sony own features. I personally tend to choose Sony phones over competition due to mainly stock software, and special hardware, as opposed to some weird notches, punch holes, apps doubling up (like on Samsung, Samsung Browser + Google Chrome, Samsung Galaxy Apps + Google Play Store, Samsung Health + Google Fit) etc, but the choice is Yours. If you feel that Pixel is the right device for you and you really like it’s experience then there’s no real reason to jump ship.
