I just recently got Tonic's 2nd album "Sugar". My god this band can write great songs. Although the song "You wanted more" was the single and video from this album, the song "Future says run" is one of the best most melodic songs I have ever heard in my live and I own around 1,000 cd's that I listen to all the time.

Emerson Hart & Tonic are very active on social and they are SUCH good, kind guys. Emerson has a great bunch of solo stuff. Cool story: Emerson & Dan (bassist) kindly posed w/ my wife & I after a show a few years back for a couple pics, and even re-posed after I approached them again and said my wife mistakenly took about five 1-second **videos** on her phone instead of pics, since it was accidentally in video mode. Emerson laughed and said "no problem!" Class acts, these guys.

Tonic: "We don't think in terms of alternative rock or guitar rock... Or how many CDs can we sell."
For the most part, the video goes on to describe the band's album sales.
But yeah, for me Tonic still rules! Their songs are a staple in my 90s alternative rock Spotify playlist.

  • @bobthebear1246

Great video, man. I always wondered what happened to Tonic. It's great to hear that they got back together again and are currently still recording. It sounds like they got caught under the wheels of mega-giant UMG's corporate b.s. . At least they garnered 2 Grammy Nominations for their unappreciated 3rd album (unheard by me).
I first became aware of Tonic in late-1999 in the Puget Sound region when KZOK-FM played the *Live At Bob's Garage* version of "Open Up Your Eyes." This version - MUCH louder, tighter, stronger and heavier than the studio version - blew me away at first listen. Absolutely love that song - specifically that version of it - to this day. I love "If You Could Only See" just as much. I just find their music being the perfect combination of light and heavy. I also find their songs to be refreshingly honest.
I remember watching the video for "You Wanted More" which came as a bonus feature on the *American Pie* DVD. I think I might have heard that song a 2nd time, if anything.
Tonic is a band that should have received much more popularity than what they had. Thanks for reminding me that I do need to check-out more of their stuff other than the 2 songs I know well by them. 👍🏻

UMG and the Communications Act of 1996 pretty much suffocated a lot of the business that everyone assumes when they think of "rock and roll". Those drops in Tonic's album sales are too steep to explain any other way; they and a lot of other bands were just dumped off a cliff by the massive conglomerates that took over everything.

I would give ANYTHING to have just one hit single, these guys had a few! I’ve never understood the hate against one hit wonders, 99.999% of us will never have a song played on the radio or sung by strangers, so to accomplish something like that is absolutely amazing. Even with just one hit song, it will still be around decades after we’re all gone and tracks like that live forever. There will still be folks two hundred years from now that will know the words to “If you could only see,” but there will be no one left on Earth at that time remembering any of us. So yeah, to write a song that will live forever is an accomplishment to envy and be proud of... not to mention these guys get to live comfortably off the residuals for the rest of their lives! On a side note, I met a guy who wrote a hit Christian song (just one song!) and he lived in a huge house with nice cars and never worked a day again. So I’m fairly sure Tonic is good to go and any of us would trade places with them in a heartbeat.

Christian music is a great racket to be involved in. There is an army of sleeve-tattooed youth pastors out there who consciously want to push alternatives to real music. Lots of real talent out there, but they'll subsidize the charisma and "it factor" for you.
Also, being famous when you're dead feels the exact same as being not famous when you're dead.

Now there's a blast from the past. I saw Machines of Loving Grace at Club DV8 in Salt Lake City. They only played half a set and left the stage to a chorus of boos.

@@maxmatson1578 Hope you enjoy the visit to SLC. Club DV8's long gone, having succumbed to a fire. The club hosted some cool bands, but the only time I was there was for the Machines concert. I wanted to see Lush when they stopped by, but was unable to.

Not even dad rock. It was just run of the mill "safe" post-grunge alternative. It didn't have any urgency or attitude, it was just vanilla flavored radio rock.

I had their two big albums. They were catchy. They had a song called "Waltz With Me," though, which was in 4/4 time all the way through. It felt oddly un-self aware.

I love your channel. I've worked in radio for 27 years. These days I work in traffic/news, but in the late 90's I worked for one of those "Upbeat Variety of the 80's, 90's & Today!" radio stations. We played the shit out of bands like this; to the point where I never wanted to hear any of this music again. To be honest, I had to find some of their songs on RUclips to jumpstart my memory. Sucks that the 90's are starting to become a blur to me.

They were a pretty good band with some really good songs, and a unique sound. There is actually a song about Hart's father on Lemon Parade. I thought Sugar had been much more successful that that. I remember hearing a lot about that album when it came out.

  • @drumsNstuff79

I always love these guys. Tonic is just a great band, but it always felt their record label didn't always feel the same way. By the time their third album came out, Hart and Russo could only tour as an acoustic duo since the label wouldn't help fund a full band tour. I think they just got caught up in a record biz that was consolidating, merging and dealing with Napster. Their albums were always great and they had a loyal fanbase, but the label never saw them as a priority. During the whole boy band craze it felt to as if all that mattered to the labels were those pop groups that were selling a gazillion copies of their albums and no 90's holdover band could compete with N'Sync selling four million copies in a week.
