Good grief Sam, all you needed to do is bridge pins 1 to 8 and 4 to 5 on the socket with a bit of single core wire or even a bit of paper clip that fits in the socket holes.
Last Oxford I bought had so much oil I was expecting to see people in orange T-shirts glueing themselves to my track.
I loved this video tbh I’ll never understand how some models can get this damaged but you know how to make them healthy
Scrap man: I am the scrape man
Man: ✔️
Made of scrap: ✔️
Truly the scrapman of all time

Bought for £47 sold for £122 . There’s a reason this hobby is so expensive!!
Good video Sam! I had exactly the same issue as you as I bought a Oxford Radial extremely cheap that was completely dead but by bypassing the circuit board it was brought back to life and still works great to this day!
I'm really glad to see that this adams radial is back up and running Sam, great job ;)
Cheers Jasper & Willow
Thank you!! Glad to hear that!! :D
I probably would have used jumpers in the 8-pin plug instead of stretching the motor wires to the pickups personally, but well done nevertheless. It would have been a shame if this one couldn't be salvaged considering how good it looked aesthetically to begin with.
Wow Sam, great to see another salvage or scrap episode! I also wanted to say that when I was looking in a local WHSmiths I found the latest railway modeller magazine, with your incredible 3d printed Gladstone! Really well done Sam!
Great show again Sam, and perfectly timed after supper with a coffee here. A DCC socket blanking plate causing a short. How interesting an odd at the same time... Can't remember ever having seen that. How could that be happening 🤔 Anyway, another one saved. Cheerio.
Very nice video. Thank you for more excellent information. I have an Oxford Adams Radial in my Hattons trunk. They are such beautiful models that I bought one anyway, knowing they can be trouble and hoping that the troubleshooting and repairs on your channel will help me through any hiccups. Now for the broken record part: please stop using the time limit as it does not add anything useful for those of us who want to see all the repair steps and details.
While I admit I’m not really into British/European styled locomotives, this is a rather handsome little steamer. I’m glad you got it working again, though I have to say that I’ve never seen the DCC adapter plug go bad before. Not that it’s safe from the scrapper’s torch, maybe you can go back and fix it so it is DCC ready. 😊
i swear one day Sam is going to get a loco he brought off the ebay site that doesnt run yet when he opens it up the reason is that the motor was removed!
Always great to see another loco raised from the dead and added to your fleet.
These are very informative and entertaining videos. Thanks
Why not use a short bit of wire to jump the pin sockets, simple solution, no soldering, and easily reversible solution
For a second, I thought it would be kinda funny to put a perfectly functional loco in one of these videos. I suppose it wouldn't be all that entertaining, but imagine ya apply power and "Oh... well, I guess that's job done! Thanks for watching!"
Sam: "This season, the engines are in worst condition than ever before"
Also Sam: *picks a loco that looks perfect*
It's great to see you dealing with a recent engine with a well-known issue (and a model I had bought myself too, before changing it for the Hornby model via Hattons' !). And you have a tough one with this one, on a electrical point of view, but with a simple solution ! and suspense too !
Lesson of the day : don't put your model engines in a deep fryer !
Sam I try to save as many locomotives and rolling stock as possible I received a 1856 revell electric model train locomotive and the motor was bad I couldn't buy just the pack motor because revell went out of business in the 70s I had an old. Bachman alco locomotive I got for parts low and behold the motor were almost the same thing I just changed the motor out the only. Problem I ran into how the new motor had to be mounted. On the frame I drilled two new mounting holes and it running on the layout today this was 12 years ago
Not really surprised to see an Oxford product on this series, to be honest you could get a whole series out of just trying to restore their poor products especially the locomotives, good to see it this restored though Sam although to be honest it still looks like it has problems when it was running at the end.
As of me typing this the Results are: Engines Salvaged: 16. Engines Scraped: 1.
Another awesome episode in this series!
This gives me massive Junkyard Wars vibes and I'm here for it
You will love it! Trust me, he doesn’t always succeed, but he is very dedicated to his work!
Hey sams trains you are amazing and at 0:12 I have that same steam engine too cool keep up the good work 👍👍👍
An Oxford Radial with a reasonable motor. That is fairly unusual although not unheard of. The problem with the blanking plate was most revealing. Well done.
Couldn't you just troubleshot the blanking-plug it self? There's not much things on it.
Thanks Sam great video full of information and interesting
Well done, Sam!
Well done sam you redisinged Oxford rails shoddy workmanship nice looking loco 👍
I kinda knew this engine would be a runner in the end lol, exciting video par usual
Great Job Sam
Awesome vid Sam love salvage or scrap. They must be challenging to make!
Thank you so much! Yes they do take a long time to make!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Awesome video Sam's trains hey Sam's trains today is my birthday 🎂
HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🎉

Very good - Well done Sam 😉🚂🚂🚂
Great rusty metal wall paper behind you in the intro.
This series is amazing
Really appreciate it Justin!
Amazing video Sam I love this series. How do you clean your locos bodies? My locos have been out of action for a while now, and their bodies are quite dusty.
Really enjoyed the video today Sam
I am still terrified of that evil Scrapman, lol.
Good job repairing this engine Sam, I love watching your videos! :)
Salvage or Scarp is always something I look forward to every month.
Great idea for your show. Onw can learn how to dismantle and repair while having fun.
Love this series 👍
Thank you so much! :D
That 3d printer became Sisyphus.
I can't wait to see the next Ep of salvage or scrap Sam. It's going to be a good one.
Cheers Jasper & Willow
Thank you so much! The next one is quite satisfying! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
What could the next engine that could be salvaged be?
Nice video sam
Funny story Sam my nan bought the d49 from you. I'll be opening it on christmas, I really can't wait to see it.
Cheers Jasper & Willow
I like the storage organisation system you have - chuck it in a box with lots of other random stuff.
That would drive me nuts, it really needs sorting out.
Great Rescue of a lovely loco Sam. I wonder though, have you since done your magic by adjusting the front pony and rear bogie springs so that there is more weight pressing the driving wheels down on the track? I made those adjustments myself, to my own Adams radial Tank engine and although it isn't a massive puller of rolling stock it did approve its pulling power significantly.
How did you do that please?
Yes more salvage and scrap transformation let's go. I'm still jealous of ur talent to fix trains. Anyway keep being awesome my friend my train arrived and I'll make that video for u
Thank you!! haha that's very kind of you - I bet you could do this too with practice! That's awesome - I'd love to see it :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
ah yes oil, as it often dose, turned into glue.
poor little loco gotten lucky to have a dedicated restorer mr. Sam's trains
Oh hey! I was flogged one of these
I think its quite sad that oxford made these lovery models but used terrible motors on then, I wish they woul do something like they id with their dean goods, re release it with an actually decent mechanism. I doubt that will happen tho, as hornby already has a adams radial and they are oxford's parent company.
Anyway, great video Sam!
For April falls there is going to be a perfect loco and instead you break it😂
Sorry for extra comments but what motor and wormgear are you using for copperknob. Also when is next sams trains live
Send him to the bluebell railway.
Do what ever to save it
That’s my favourite class of engine
I see you are now a published article author, well done Sam
haha yeah!! Thank you very much :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That tank engine looks like the Greendale rocket
An epic video
good vid on channel thanks lee
Did you heatshrink the wire join?
Do GER A55 Decapod
Sam the Eco-warrior
No to landfill.
Yes to renewal. 😊
Oh no! SALVAGE OR SCRAP! Everyone run!😎👍👌👌🚂🚞🚞🚞🚞
Best videos ever
haha thank you! :D
Imagine if he had a spare blanking plate - would've been a 5 minute job
everytime i see that scrapman😂 it scares me when you throw a gorgeous loco to mr scrapman😅
hey sam can you pin me pls🙏🏻😩
How is the motor mount related to the initial "No Power"condition ?
the motor might be broken, meaning he'll need to replace it, meaning he'll need a new motor adapter
Scrap man is getting hungry.
Salvaged!
Fax
Just seems counter productive by bodging the wiring, surely you have a few in your stash of locos to have replaced that plug with.
Oxford definitely needs to retool the Adams Radial. They never seem to work properly.
So Sam i'm still learning about model trains i have a model layout i'd like advice on how to maintain my models in case i need to take them apart.
i have a J83 class and two identical Caledonia n Pugs that need repairs.
I still want a Salvage or Scrap tee-shirt!!
What am I supposed to do with this cutters torch now?!
Surely you could have fixed the blanking plate first. Hardly a complex part.
On mine, it was a burnt out SMD resistor. It literally went on fire, and those things smell awful. :)
hahahaha they do smell bad!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
You got more spare parts for the loco
Well done Sam. Those pesky dcc boards. Another thing that will go wrong. Keep it simple. Lol .
Genuinely my favourite tv series that isn’t on tv.
haha thank you so much!! :D
Ah yes, the tragic case of the Oxford Adams Radial. Gorgeous model plagued with the worst motors and lubricant I've had to deal with
Is there any way you can release the 3d printer files for the motor bracket you designed a while back? I'd love to be able to fix up my model.
haha absolutely - right pain aren't they? Yeah sure, have I not already done that??
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains there's a file on your thingiverse for an Oxford Dean Goods bracket, but it isn't stated whether it fits on the Adams or not. I also believe that in the last video you did with 2 Adams Radials you said you needed a 2nd bracket of a slightly different size, and that one definitely hasn't been released
@@GelatoTaco I can confidently say it won't work with the Radial. I'm actually in the process of developing an upgrade kit for them using the same 1020 coreless motor found in the OR76DG002 and newer models.
It would be a great shame to see such a lovely model go to the scrap man and all because of a DCC blanking plate short, I am really pleased that you managed to get it sorted out in your time limit. Personally I don’t care how long it would take it would not go in my scrap bin ! 👍🚂😃
👍👏
Sams starving the scrap man
Sam, be completely honest, will there ever be an episode where a train will be scrapped? (not that I want there to be, just a question)
More scrapyard when
16:38 the font is red, its has to be yellow
Hi Sam
Who's up next for Salvage or Scrap?
Why didn't you just repair the blanking plate ?
This week, on Salvage or Scrap, Sam has a certain amount of time to restore an Oxford Rail Adams Radial Tank!
Can he do it, or will the engine be fed to the *SCRAP MAN*? Find out this week, on yet another exciting episode of Salvage Or Scrap!
Sam can we still send you images for the wall of train (or fame)? And how can we do it?
You certainly can! Email them to samstrains@outlook.com
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thanks sam
A dead oxford loco? You restored it though which is good
Thanks Chase! :D
Could have taken a blanking plate from one of your other locos... hmm.
Buggering up one loco to fix another? Not really much of a step forward ;)
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Could have then bought another blanking plate for the other loco later - they're peanuts. As it is, the Radial now needs serious work to be right.
It isn’t serious work - to chip it you’d resolder the 2 wires to the correct pads and fit a fresh blanking plate. Work of 2 minutes.
Can you do this in real life?
22 hours till this is 24 hours or 1 day old
I have a challenge for you. A model diesel engine has stalled halfway up the incline. Nothing you do will make the diesel move. Can you solve the problem with sneeze power? Sneeze as hard as you can, and see if it makes the box on wheels move. If a real sneeze doesn't come, fake it.
haha that's an interesting challenge Kelly... I'm not sure if my sneezes would be powerful enough!!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Are blanking plates really that important
Sure, a loco won't work without it unless you re-wire the whole thing!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The 6 and 8 pin sockets are easily fixed without one you just need to connect the correct pairs of holes with a single core wire or a piece off small paper clip that fit the holes. Other more modern sockets are not so easy as they use fine pin plugs that can’t be bridged with such basic methods. In this loco it would have been pins 1 to 8 at one end of the socket and pins 4 to 5 at the other.
As you have discovered the problem is not the motor. And there's a reason the DCC banking plug burns out and gets hot. It's the ridiculous brass/sprung plungers. They arc, overheat and fail. WD40 should be sprayed liberally into them before you run it. Spares seem to be unavailable. Utter shite. Unfortunately your fix means that you only have power from the driving wheels.
Hello Sam. :)
Hello!
