The repair looks great! For finishing the commutator and all metal wheels, I've found that a felt wheel on the Dremel with some emery buffing compound gives it a mirror-like shine that should further extend the life of the parts over the small abrasions made by the wire wheel. It might be worth giving a try sometime. :)
Although not the best models in the world, you certainly appreciate the standardisation the of the 80s Hornby locos and clip fit approach when trying turn one around quickly! This has reminded me I need to sort out my V1 APT motor, which is literally the most bogging thing I have seen.
Funny story Sam I found a Honby M7 & T9 and they were broken. The owner said they were for parts. But I have faith in them. Now they are running like if they were brand new and the M7 is out on my mainline Cheers Jasper & Willow
i was just on youtube when i saw this! made me think back to when i used to loved your videos, and ive started to love them again now and this video has got me inspired to get back into collecting!
I have a Hornby Class 37 a bit like this - although, it's in Large Logo livery, and it has the 5-pole version of the Ringfield motor. Glad to see this one was saved!
Right. I am SO jealous of the know-how it takes to work miracles like this. That's not even mentioning the insanely short time it was completed in. I so badly want to be able to service my own locos but I really never know what I'm doing and other than cleaning the wheels and pickups I'm pretty much totally helpless always. Fantastic video! Just amazing - beyond my comprehension, really. And what a genius idea to sell them on eBay afterwards, too! Brilliant.
Amazing Salvage Sam! Love the fact this episode was released just after the new Bachmann Class 37 review. Seeing this 1980s model really shows how far the industry has come for model trains.
Isn't it incredible what years of neglect and a dreadful build up of dirt and grime can result in. A simple service each year should take next to no time to do and keep models in tip top condition. Well done Sam. Best, Pete.
Good Video Sam. 👍🏻 I Have A Request: On Your Next Video Can You Do A Review On The “ Union Pacific 4014 Big Boy” Locomotive? It Is my favourite the biggest locomotive in the world
That was my first loco... numbered as D6830 on the Intercity mail set, 1977. Has the original 3 pole and worm gear, rather than ringfield. A friend blew up the armature. Managed to get a spare armature, haven't installed yet.
Holy moly, I’ve never seen a mechanism so dirty before. I didn’t even think a commutator could get that dirty to the point where it blends in with the rest of the chassis lol.
I was given a box from a friend of my father which was full of Tyco freight cars and locos, of which on caught my eye. It is a 0-4-0 Pennsylvania steamer. I was taking it apart and found a white liquid in the worn gear. I thought it was old grease until I dug further in the box and found Elmers glue, it didn't take much for me to realize that someone had put glue in the loco.
I know that people mock those old pancake motors but they are easy to work on and to repair. Many seem to go on and on. The new motors are, in theory much better, but your recent experience shows that their quality can vary considerably.
Hi Sam I use Zep wipes from screwfix for my hands might help keep your hands clean during a salvage operation. Excellent videos which we all enjoy watching. Keep up the good work Sam. Thankyou.
Hmm, maybe that’s why my Hornby Railroad Golden Shuttle was acting sluggish, it’s motor probably got caked in gunk. Fantastic job Sam, it looks a world of Difference!
Something I would recommend is getting some fiberglass pencils to help you clean the commutator, fiberglass pencils are fantastic at doing a quick clean but still making it absolutely shiny
I have some of those, but have always rated the wire wheel as better - different things work for different people of course! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hey Sam, nice work on the Class 37 locomotive Hornby. Plus, Dapol's new GWR Manor is available to be purchase because I saw it on your good friend Mike reviewing it on his channel. The detail on the model is so good looking.
Decent episode Sam, I have one of these class 37s but the triang version which hasn’t worked since I got it which was quite a few years ago, it’s now in a condition where it would have to be buying spares to fix it instead of trying to service it and keep original parts
Cracking job Sam. I do concur, these series do feel like an authentic TV show. Aren’t these oldies just wonderful. Less detailed yes, but so easily brought back to life and straightforward serviceable. This one must have been a walk in the park for you but she looks lovely. We are in the market of 70s and 80s German premium H0 models and they too always do put a smile on our face. Btw, isn’t this a Lima model? Cherio and Ciao.
Excellent job Sam. 37’s are still my favourite diesel, I had 8 when I modelled in 00. Now I have 1 in N gauge. But it’s still a good model. Love that it is running again. Keep on salvaging the models. All deserve to be loved again. Great video Sam.
Sweet of England! The Class 37 is finally persevered to be run again, let’s see if the other locomotives are could fixed by “Sam the Modeler Mechanic!”
Hey, will you do a review of the R3955 Coa cola 0-4-0, you see the model is reused form an 0-4-0 version of thomas, and would make an interesting review
This is a really awesome series I really like the locomotives you restore and get them running again. This diesel locomotive you did looks really good it looks like it runs really nice what happened to the little Dockside engine I know it was scrapped what happened to the parts of it
Sam, what if you can get it working, but you can't get it clean and/or presentable? It would be unfair to the engine just to scrap it for that reason, especially if you've sweated bullets to get it running. I suppose you could use it as a freight only loco, but then you run into the "A4 on heavy coal train" problem. What would you do?
Nice to see a loco saved from the scrap! It would be interesting to see, after a period of time which loco you saved was the quickest? I hope they've let you out of the coal pit? ⛏ 🤣
40 year old oil and the very soft brushes of the time that fall apart when you try and clean them. Things have advanced, though possibly not with Hornby!
No wonder everyone’s electric bills are going up. Every time this sets off it takes half the energy out of the national grid. Somewhere in Scotland a village is plunged in to darkness every time it changes direction.
Sam I have a request. Can you specify if whatever you look at new or used will roll on code 83 track? I belatedly realized my choice of track limited what I can send on loops around my track.
Nice performance overall, I really love your idea with this series. Anyway, for vintage modellers, this 37 is a good deal. Looks nice and, now, runs good.
This was one of my first ever locos. I bought it from the shop at the east lancs railway, they had a second hand shop at the end of the platform. I ended up taking it back to the shop I bought it from because it wasn't working. Guy opened it up and found it full of track pins that had somehow ended up lodged inside after I left some on the track. I was only about 12. Tbf he fixed it for me and didn't laugh, well at least until id left.
Cant wait for scrapman to eat thoose failed to repair engines, plus i like the scrapman said noooo because the loco you salvage wont become his food so funny
This feels like a real TV show. Great job Sam
Cheers Jasper & Willow
Thank you so much - really glad you think so! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great job Sam
I would really love to see the models do a couple of laps around the layout once finished

I don't know why, but whenever Sam succeeds I imagine the Scrap Man cussing him out in some demonic language.

Hornby Class 37 was the first engine I ever bought myself, £8 from WH Smith's and a free wagon thrown in👍.

I actually have a class 37 in a similar condition, but it's missing a entire bogey! (I'm working on fixing it)
if hornby was to get on the class 37 band wagon accurascale / bachmann they would still use the triang mould and charge £300
