Oh wow, old Märklin locomotives have a very similar issue called "Hardened Oil Syndrome" where the original factory oil has a problem that causes it to congeal and harden if the locomotive isn't run for a while. It's mostly an issue for small Z scale trains, and it effected one or two of mine. Great video as always!
One thing about videoing your repairs you can look back to see if a part was missing or where it may have fallen , in this case the chassis spacer was always missing.
Yeah that's very true actually - though I don't see that part looking back at the footage... I wonder if it was missing to begin with?? Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I bought an original 03 and a plastic split axle Broke in half ! Lovely model so I scratched built a chassis with Romford wheels and a Portescape Motor. Took me a bit longer than you did but it was well worth the effort, and still runs well today 👍regards from Ron
Love these salvage or scrap episodes. I suggest you invest in some aerosol contact cleaner though… and given that it starts slow and then picks up speed the motor probably needs remagnetising.
Great show on a Saturday evening Sam. Oh dear, the dreaded hardened factory lubricant, and what a mess actually... All that cleaning up and re-oiling in ~15 minutes does certainly show your profound experience. The cosmetics, buffers and couplings can easily be fixed by the next owner. At least she runs well! Cheerio,
Ok so all this engine needs now is front buffers and new couplers Buffers can be robbed from an old triang model and glued into place and painted The couplers . Bachman spares had my back becasue this model uses the same couplers as bachmans Thomas and James models . Done
You are a dying breed like myself. A person with the ability to use their initiative to fix something made by a fellow human being. Well done. The hobby and this WORLD needs people like us. Keep it up. 😊
Now let’s just watch as the eBay prices go through the roof! You probably make more on those auctions anyway! Not against it though. That’s the bidders doing…
Do you think its possible to put a circular track on a baseboard that spins anti clockwise and then run a train on it so it looks like it stays in the same place.
I believe Jenny Kirk achieved something very similar this in the first series of "Hornby- a Model world" in which two Hornby Pugs ran themselves rather than the scenery revolving.
That’s an 04 shunter. I can tell by the cone-shaped exhaust. You’re leaving the Evil Scrapman to die of starvation as we speak. Wonder of there’s such thing as gear decay from all that dried up lube?
I’m sorry to correct you but 04s had a flat fuel tank just in front of the cab and 03s have the larger fuel tank with a raised bit in front of the cab so this is most definitely a 03 also the flower pot and cone chimneys are on both 03s and 04s this one is currently preserved at Mangapps railway museum in Essex
@@gmaster5754 Well, rimbus dimbus! You are right, my good man. How could I be such a foolish dumbass to not notice the larger engine. It was the exhaust that caught me off guard.
I hadn't realised this design dated back so long. I have a Mainline version, which is even older and uses a pod-style ringfield instead of the more conventional motor here, and the mainline ringfields are absolutely terrible.
I always enjoy seeing an old loco brought back to life. The lubricant can get quite stiff quite quickly. I have had a Bachmann 0-6-0 Collett from new and that struggled after only a year or so of not being run. It was so bad the motor smoke and I thought it had had it but new lubricant saved the day.
Hmm if it's worn out there might not be much you can do - I guess pick up another loco spares or repairs and look at swapping it?? Thanks for watching - Sam :)
Yeyyyyy more train restorations. Lets go sam is the best. I still wish i could fix trains . But i think i should try just like u. But anyway ur the best and keep being awesome. But im being serious what train do u recommend me buying.
An overall good restoration here Sam, good to see it running, as I say all the time with split chassis locomotives if people look after them like they would with other locomotives a split chassis model will work faultlessly.
I think it would be useful in a practical sense to remove the "time-limit thing" tbh. How about one on repairing the mazak-damaged Hornby Class 31 for example (of which I am one of the unfortunate owners!).
Unfortunately it's because it's just too hot up there in the summer afternoons - it was painful/unhealthy last year so I skipped it! And yes there will be more :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)
So much doubt yet results speak for themselves again don't they? i still prefer seeing proper fixes to rushed ones but at least there is effort made to give those broken down models another lease of life.
I feel bad for the so called "scrap man" everybody thinks he's evil but I think he's really just misunderstood. First of all that nickname is imposing, like his name is Jerry, c'mon you can at least let him have his dignity while he's being held against his will forever confined to a cabinet in your basement, made to be a puppet in your sick games for your amusement, profiting off his suffering. Sustained on nothing but the occasional broken model train, look at the guy he's clearly malnourished, he's barely able to utter out a few words before the door slams in his face, and those are the worst bloodshot eyes I've ever seen they're practically glowing might wanna get that checked out my G. I am utterly uphauled at the behavior displayed in this show, a perfect example of a cruel narcissist taking advantage and profiting off of the lesser man, whilst mascaraing as but an innocent model train restorationist. This behavior is downright unacceptable and I will be starting a campaign to free the scrapman from your captivity and thus the deplorable conditions he is being held in. I will see you my friend, in court!
I like the idea of resurrecting a dud loco, but why put a time limit on it. Why not take your time and tell viewers what you are doing and why. If, the end you want to say how long it took, then fine. I learned very early on in my engineering apprenticeship that the longest way to do a job is try to rush it.
I don't do bids on ebay any more. I'd make an offer instead, which is more my style. So if you're willing to let your viewers make an offer, so they can buy the model more cheaply, you'd have great results on your hands. Nice to see the 03 shunter has been Saved From Scrap. Excuse the Season 2 Thomas story title, I couldn't resist.
On this episode of Salvage or Scrap, Sam only has a certain amount of time to fix a Bachmann 03 shunter! Can he do it, or will the locomotive be fed to the SCRAP MAN? Find out on this episode of Salvage Or Scrap!

Yeah it's quite a common issue isn't it? Amazong how hard some of these lubricants can become!

Salvage or scrap was such a genius idea Sam! You should pat yourself on the back. These are so entertaining!
Thank you so much my friend, really appreciate it!

@SamsTrains hey Sam, remember that schools class you used the tender from for that double tender schools class?

I think you should do a series where you actually do fully fix broken models. No concern of a time limit.
This is VERY entertaining and informative! I love it! Great job Sam!
Thank you so much glad you enjoyed it! :D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
I almost feel bad for getting to watch this for free... Your brand just continues to expand and improve!

That was a record!
I still have a couple of locoomotives to fix but finding parts is a pain in the you know what
You need an ultrasonic bath for cleaning these models. May save a bit of time.
Hi Sam, Saved for another day , All the best Brian 😃
Thanks a lot Brian! :D
GREAT WORK WITH THIS OFFICIAL CHALLENGE OF RESTORING A WORN-DOWN MODEL LOCOMOTIVE TO WORKING ORDER!
THESE IS THE BEST MODEL TRAIN SERIES!!!!!!?????!!!!!
Thank you so much!!! :D

@@SamsTrains aww, thats too bad. I know you have said in the past that it is a hard series to film though.

i would of just taken the motors out and made then dummy locomotives, no need to scrap them, and they can just look pretty as you pull them along
