I don't think you dropped the ball, by putting out the first review. It's better to hear a review from the heart, an honest no holes barred video telling it like it is. I've stopped watching a lot of the other reviews on RUclips now. Most never have a negative word to say about the product they are reviewing. I watch your videos as you tell it like it is, no sugar coating.
But hey, that's just my opinion.
    Keep up the good work.

After conducting some online research, I think that I discovered the reason why Pixel 7 series users have such widely differing experiences with their phones. The short most common reason is: the Tensor Processing Unit. The Tensor Processing Unit (or TPU for short) will overheat when it is trying to process more computational tasks simultaneously that it can handle efficiently. The main culprit behind this phenomenon (among others) is called "Machine Learning".
Machine learning can potentially initiate so many computational tasks simultaneously that it can cause the TPU to overheat while processing those tasks. Heat is generated the by the processor while it tries to process an increasing number computational tasks. Without any intervention to slow down or stop the processing of such tasks while the TPU overheats, the hardware would eventually fail, and the software would eventually start to malfunction, and thus stop working.
Unsurprisingly, the overwhelming majority of cool "Pixel exclusive" features are controlled by machine learning algorithms that initiate tasks for the processor. Needless to say, the TPU wasn't designed to simultaneously process an unlimited number of machine learning tasks without a hardware failure. Unfortunately, it appears that GOOGLE decided to push such concerns aside and used the TPU for it's Pixel series phones anyway. In the mean time, Google is presently continuing to work on TPU improvements.

Literally showing your off the shelf experience with the phone in your first review was a good move and is very helpful to someone like me who may consider buying one. It’s possible that you could send that unit back and get another one that functions properly but then if you just reviewed that good unit then I may not be aware of the possibility of running into the issues that you had initially. I do appreciate what you did in the first video.

I think one of the biggest problems of tensor chips is that they're manufactured by samsung not tsmc, look at snapdragon 8 gen 1 and 8 gen 2 .. the latter is leaps and bounds ahead in every way and with big margins especially in efficiency, battery consumption and heat management.
Other tensor problems include using older cpu cores, using old modems and maybe there're some problems with software optimization along with Google's terrible quality control.

Apple used the Intel chip in their MacBooks for over a decade until they perfected their own silicon and were confident enough to implement it in their laptops and also now the iPads… I think google too should take this step and just use the SD processors in their pro devices until they make their Tensor chip powerful and sufficient enough to go head to head with the market giants…

My pixel 7 experience has been great so far. Admittedly, the very first unit I bought was defective. Basically it kept randomly freezing but now I'm on my second unit. No issues. Battery life is pretty good. My only gripe with this phone is the "fast charging" speed! And as far as the tensor chip goes, I think we also have to understand exactly why Google went with the tensor/exynos chip. (Yeah because of pricing.) But also it's because they're focusing more on AI which the AI on Pixel 7 and Pixel 6 stomps the competition. The AI powers it's search engines as well as the cameras and software which works well very well. Tensor 3 is going to have massive improvements over tensor generation 2

Coming from Nexus 6P to a Pixel 7 Pro I can say that this phone is everything that one should have been.
The jury is still out on Bluetooth for me given I've used two sets of beats head phones. One being manufactured more recently and giving no issues with the other being older and having issues. That said these old ones got a new firmware update recently.
RUclips might be Glitchy in QHD resolution as I recently had issues with it not accepting touch input. Either disabling, re-enabling or going back to 1080P has sorted this out.
Other than that I've seen the dreaded heat while recording video once and have felt it get hot with the 30W charger.
    Decent phone in my opinion.

  • @kustu

Tensor chips seem to have pretty big differences between units. My battery life has been good (11h SOT), no overheating and my Geekbench 6 result was way better than what I've seen from some of these. It was along there with the SD 8 Gen 1.
Also on average the Pro models do get considerably better performance than the A series for example, so it seems like they put the better silicon ones to the more expensive phones.

If you have a decent enough chip that you've made yourself put it in the budget phones perfect it ensure it works seamlessly with your operating system before you carry it over to your flagship. Your best statement is also so true it takes time to be great

One of my favorite phones ever was the Pixel 3a. It felt as smooth and snappy as a flagship phone because of the optimized software, its camera was better than any flagship phone for pictures (not video), but that's ok at the price point. It had the headphone jack, and a really sturdy polycarbonate body with a metal plate to add some weight... that is where Google shined, for me. I don't care about flagship if you're not going to bring the heat in every category. I'd rather pay less for a fun, smooth and functional phone with a good picture camera than a ridiculous amount for low battery, sloppy video, fragile body, bugs and glitches with "advanced software features." Just no.

Maybe it's just the videos but that's not the color I see anywhere on google store. Also see how the microphone on the back has a cutout around it. That cutout shouldn't be there. 💯 agree with this. HtC would've thrived through google...I doubt the pixel would even exist if this happend. In fact i hope they fond their footing a make a comeback into the mobile market..For example the HTC ONE M8 with Google experience was window into what that would've been like ...😞 SMH

My first Pixel was the 6A and hated it. The fingerprint sensor never worked, camera was just OK, and it was slow. Sent it back to Best Buy, paid the restocking fee. Waited for the regular Pixel 7, and it's been perfect. So the A series is not a guarantee anymore than the Pro series.

Comment section is just a bunch of subjective opinions and anecdotes, but there is a point where anecdote s build up and form solid statistics. I for one kept the pixel 7 pro for lass than two weeks. Poor performance, especially in games, always running hot, bad battery life, charges slowly. Took it back to best buy and got the moto edge plus 2023 instead. Totally blown away. It feels like to spiritual successor to the Razor Phone only with a great camera.

Went from a Pixel 2 to a 5 then the P6 and eventually to now a 7 pro.
Only device I've had issues with was the P6 and it's actually working great now after many updates later.
You had a crap experience but this alone doesn't mean Google devices are crap.
Samsung devices are known to have swelling batteries... does that mean that Samsung devices as a whole are crap?

I have an s23 ultra and a pixel 7 pro I just picked up for $525. I'm now selling my s23 ultra. The 7 pro at this moment has been fantastic. Always love the pixel photos and stock Android. The main reason I love it is assistant. It just doesn't worm the same on my s23 ultra. Not sure about the "ecosystem " issue, I used apple, samsung and my pixel with no issues with apps, etc.

Moving from S23 ultra to a pixel is a massive downgrade. If you can't see that, you are simply interested in photos and nothing else (although there are nowadays plenty of photo comparisons that show the ultra being better than pixel in many photo scenarios. Don't also get me started on videos where the difference is night and day!

You just killed the whole point of having an Android on the first place , would've been perfect and more better for you if you would've opted for an iphone at this point lmao if you wanted that bland of an experience.😂
I hated Samsung with their exynos processor, but refusing a SD 8 gen 2 to settle for a Google tensor 2 is just a big joke.

I can tell you what I have good experience but also they have issues with quality control. Some phones work well some other seem to be like ur phone. Quality control. The pros seem to have the biggest issues from battery to heating from glitches. But the 6 6a 7 7a. Seem to be always reliable way less issues. And glad u got the pixel 7a and see that pixel can be good. But the quality control need to be much better.

Bro, amazing video, but I just want to note that Google pixel..... DOES NOT DO WELL WITH ANY OTHER LAUNCHER than it's stock launcher. Even the stock launcher freezes up but not as much as any other launcher. It's not that the other launchers are bad, its just that the Google pixel doesn't just work well with literally any other launcher.

I’m 57 years, and have I always bought Samsung phones, except the first ones, that were Nokia’s. I’ve never experienced a faulty or defect phone. So unless I’m just extremely lucky, then clearly, this isn’t good enough by Google. I feel otherwise tempted. But being 50/50 if you get a faulty device or not, that’s a dealbreaker. It’s a hassle to have to return a product for replacement. A faulty device should be a freak accident that maybe 1 in a 1,000 experiences.

those people who claim the device is fake took things far your device is real (1) I disagree with you on the volume button you acted as a fixed pixel problem on all google pixel. (2) about call buddy most of pixel 7 pro users I know they don't have problems with calls issues. it's either your device you bought has faults software problem I have now is the developers preview of Android 14 am using been good with my android 14. One the I respect is your honest man experience won't be same if I also become honest you do genuine reveals. as pixel 7 pro use haven't faced problems to that percentage

I like pixel devices but if it wasnt for the camera on s series samsung phones struggling with fast moving kids I would have either that or maybe... apple. Unfortunately the 7 pro has been very buggy for me with time. Connectivity, random unresponsive screen, over heating, very poor battery life... simple thing of not being able to see my call screen when connected to my car, important when sometimes needing to chnage audio source. Im a pixel fanboy but it is frustrating sometimes.

Great Video, but i got to say i strongly disagree with a lot of your points. The big one is your take on the processor. Google should not ditch the G2 for snapdragon. There is a reason people call this google pixel the smartest smart phone. The G2 thrives in areas that the Bionic series and the Snapdragons don't. I have many other options and different takes, but i dont want to right a novel haha have a good day. Stay blessed.

Tbh I don't trust anyone who says this phone isn't Hot 80% off the time. They are either in complete denial or they are using a very thick case or something.
It's my only real complaint and it's enough for me to not recommend it to someone despite the pleasing user experience. I'm a really light user. Why would I tell someone who may use it to do more then I do to pay their hard earned money on a phone that gets hot doing anything. Like how's the battery life on this thing going to age over the years if it's always Hot?
