I have the 24’ AT4X with the AEV front bumper and the high OEM running boards. It has everything I need in a truck for Colorado. I got it for $71k in April. Already have 17,400 miles on it. Hands down the best 1500 I’ve ever had. Owned multiple 1st, 2nd and 3rd get Tundras and a 21’ King Ranch F150. Nothing compares.
I got my 24 at4x aev in 11/24 for 74k$ duramax all options. Just waited till my local dealer had 5 left and was desperate to move them ,) love the truck for 74k with aev best money I spent
How serendipitous, I've been using my Thor's Lightning 4 tire air up kit for about a year and have loved it! But the funnier part is I planned a snow wheeling adventure for today, about 2 weeks ago, I ordered their programable compressor where you can just punch in the pressure and walk away. It showed up this evening AFTER I got back from the snow and I was literally opening the box while watching this video having no freaking clue they were a sponsor for this video haha
I have a ZR2 Bison and I paid way less than $88K. It’s a great truck and I’ve added a camper and some suspension work. As I understand it, the DSSVs can handle the weight (but do not work well with any kind of further lift) and since the rear is just leaves, you can build that up for the added weight without messing up how the DSSVs work. My experience so far is that the ride quality, driving experience and towing capability (well, flat-towing anyway) all feel the same with me fully maxed on payload and flat-towing a 4xe Wranger (8K miles so far since most of the work was completed). The only negative is that it uses a ton of DEF, but the dealer has checked everything and I’m within spec (especially considering the load) and nothing bad seems to be showing up in the codes or operation of the Duramax. Still trying to decided what to do about the tires, but it seems that larger diameter with similar width work fine, so will probably go with that at some point. As an owner, I can tell you that I lock up early and am willing to scrape, so it’s really been remarkable how capable this truck is, even with the camper. I don’t get the little plastic pieces on the bottom of the sides of the rear bumper, though. These seem to get banged up almost every time I go off-road. Seems an odd choice on a steel bumper that’s designed for protection, but I’m sure there’s a reason. Overall, as long as you’re willing to use the protection, I think this truck is great and I’m very happy with mine.
Do a search for Demonworks here on youtube.. he covers the 3.0L Duramax extensively. Apparently Towing just makes this Duramax engine drink DEF fluid. But I love my Duramax in my '24 ZR2 Silverado.. traded in a '23 ZR2 with the 6.2L and have been grinning ear to ear. Perfect engine for the ZR2.
One thing I have never understood in a truck designed for "hardcore" offroad, why do they have the rear shock mounts hang so low and so far in instead of closer to the wheels. I would think mount the shock on top of the axle.
My ZR2 has been amazing, just came back today from going up in the snow and getting a tree. I'd much rather have an extended cab config with a longer bed with the same wheel base I have OR an extended cab with a short bed. Sad neither is an option for the ZR2 and or AT4X
If buying a GM I would go with the AT4-X without all the AEV stuff. That’s 10k worth of items most will never use. Still get the lockers and Duramax without the regular AT4-X. But at this price range I would go with the Ram RHO. Lots of power and still has capabilities of the TRX off road.
I agree. A lot of that aftermarket stuff isn't necessary for most people. AT4-X is it going to get you through most situations the way it's already equipped. I'm a Ford guy but I can appreciate a well-equipped rig.
If you're going to do stuff that legitimately requires a front locker you'll want all of this stuff. You don't need a front locker if you're not going to need skid plates and a winch mount.
@@PeakDecline honestly though if someone legitimately uses those skids and adds and uses a winch, they should have bought the Colorado bison instead. Or just lift the full size and put 35s
@johnmorris77 I have owned a Colorado and currently a Gladiator and I wouldn't really agree. If anything I think protection is even more important with the larger trucks, you're dealing with a lot longer wheelbase and width. It means you're far more likely to scrap the bottom or touch the rocker panels.
@ my point is that if someone is planning on off roading to that degree, the Colorado bison would be a better choice simply because it’s more capable off road. These full size trucks are too large for most trails.
I love this truck, thanks guys for showing what it can do offroad. I drove the Chevy Bison version that was offered up at a great deal. The poor brakes and low payload just swayed us away.
@@btl4220like 1400 lbs. That’s middle of the pack… for a midsized truck. By comparison, a Jeep Gladiator Sport S Max Tow has a payload of about 1700 lbs.

It's a GREAT TRUCK but dump the tires as use them as spares only for emergency summer use or resell them and get 37 inch Nitto EXO Grapplers, Mickey Thompson, or even Goodyear Duratrac tires which are winter 3-peak rated!
I like a lot of the features about this truck, except for the diesel. Never again do I want to deal with DEF or high pressure fuel rail systems, fuel pumps and injectors. Diesel engines used to be much more simpler and reliable. I’ll take a gas engine….naturally aspirated gas engine, any day. And for an off-road capable, full size truck, I’d have to go with the Ram Power Wagon.
I have a close friend, a longtime truck owner and vehicle salesman, that had a 1500 duramax 3.0. Parked it and went into a store, walked out 10 minutes later with his truck engulfed in flames. It burnt to a crisp before the firetrucks could even get there. Never got an explanation of what happened from GM but he never bought another duramax 3.0
Badass truck! I love how it’s not a high speed desert runner. Haven’t been able to find and deserts here in Canada. Lots of trails tho so this is great in that sense
The 3.0 takes off nice and sounds really great. But it's kinda pokey from 30-60 IMO. I drove a 3.0 at4x and a 6.2 and I bought the 6.2. That 3.0 is a little undersized for the larger tires IMO.
Probably a smart choice. The 3.0 is fairly new, is there any info about its long-term durability? It seems like manufacturers can't design reliable engines anymore, seems like every new engine has issues.
Totally agree with you. I have a ZR2 with the 6.2 gas engine and tow at the max rating with it every time I go camping. The 6.2 is much quicker accelerating loaded or unloaded than the 3.0 and there are times when that matters a LOT. I have driven a similar truck with the 3.0 diesel and it's alright but I will happily pay a little more for fuel and get a much higher level of performance. The one thing everyone talks about with the diesel is fuel economy but when all is said and done over the course of a year or more the cost between the two is not as dramatic as some would have us believe. Def is a big part of the diesel operating expense because they use so much of it now when they are working hard. Oil changes are more expensive etc. I'm keeping my 2022 6.2 it has been flawless so far and I work it hard sometimes.
@@trailrunnah8886 3.0 is now new, it's been out since 2019, I'm on my 3rd one. I trust that engine the most out of all other engines in half ton trucks.
@BGBATKA well, 5 years old is still relatively new, as far as engine designs. The engine in my car has been in production since 2003. If you're in your third one already, how many miles have you gotten to before trading in? When I say long-term durability, I'm talking about 10 years, not the person who trades it in every 2 or 3 years.
Beautiful truck, but it seems to me a better deal would be the Power Wagon. Granted it doesn’t have a available diesel, but it can certainly do anything this truck did in this test, plus it has just as many luxury features as this truck, and it is at least $10,000 or more cheaper, not to mention that it can double as a work truck when you need to tow 10,000 lbs to places where most any other truck would never be able to go.
The PW has a payload that's actually pathetic for a "HD" truck and it's longer wheelbase is a huge disadvantage compared to short bed 1500s. It's also way heavier. If you want a genuine offroad truck there's no 2500+ that's better than a stock offroad 1500. And I'm not sure the 6.4 is safely towing 10k lbf in any area where most other trucks can't tow, ie tough offroading environments
I have a 2020 custom trailboss got it for 40k with 33k miles on it, it would be nice to have that front locker, but my truck weighs a 1000 pounds lighter than the GMC that they were showing, and I have 1800 pounds of payload.and can tow 9,500lbs It's the perfect all around truck. Without the massive 70K 80K price tag on it. Granted, my interior is not as comfortable but I got over that fact pretty quick when I saw that I could achieve 21 miles to the gallon highway. In the future, I do plan on upgrading my seats in the aftermarket sector
I had a 2024 AT4X and had transmission issues at 800 miles. After numerous trips to the dealership I decided to trade it in for a 2500 Duramax. I don't have buyers remorse anymore like I did with the AT4X.
I have a 6.2L version of this truck without the AEV package, and can report that you still get the steel AEV bumper on the front, but not on the back. I have to admit, I really wanted the TRX at the time, but the gas mileage and the extra $15k swayed me in the direction of the AT4X.
If you don't have the AEV Bison package, you do NOT get a AEV bumper at the front unless previous owner swapped it out. If you bought it new and its only the bumper, there's something really wrong there.
@@BGBATKAfalse the at4x non AEV comes with just the front bumper. The AEV edition comes with both front and rear bumpers extra skid plates etc. Also in my opinion don’t like the rear bumper from AEV because they get rid of the corner step
The bumpers and sliders can be done on your own for way less. Also the ZR2 gets better fuel economy with the diesel than the AT4X with the same engine. This has to be the best half ton overlanding and general use truck. Would rather have this over a Raptor or RHO for my use.
Jesus! I have regular dreams where I slide while driving and brakes and hand brake don't work (is it now called e-brake?). But to do so with a huge pickup, and backwards? what a nightmare. Yayks!
Technically they are parking brakes now, they have been for a while. Fears are fears tho, I get it. I'm horrified of being eaten alive for basically no reason lol. But it's not going to happen. Brake systems are cross split (L front/R rear and R front/L rear.) so if there's a failure, you'll still have at minimum half power. Modern cars also have sensors monitoring brake fluid levels and warn you before you get yourself into anything. Parking brakes will also still engage in an emergency, even if it's just a button. It goes to a separate, usually mechanical, actuator and brake the rear wheels. In an EMERGENCY emergency too there are other options to at least slow down. You can downshift, rub on guard rail/wall/cliff face, even other cars or whatever you have. The sooner the better. Obviously it will damage things but so will crashing. So.
The payload on that thing is 1000 lbs (sometimes less, depending on options). For reference, a 1980 Volkswagen Rabbit pickup had a 1100 lbs payload. A Duramax ZR2 at least has a 1550 lbs payload; not huge, but far better than this AEV. So why pay an additional $14k over a ZR2, even if you can afford it?
Skid plates, steel bumpers... they add weight. Which is already baked into the payload of a Bison/AEV Edition. If you added those items yourself they would eat the payload. Frankly if you're legitimately doing off-road stuff that requires things like a front locker then you're going to want/need skid plates and a place to mount a winch. And you're buying the GMC because its got more luxury, that's pretty much it. It doesn't do anything more off-road a ZR2 Bison couldn't.
Awesome videos as usual. You guys are my go to channel for update and detailed info. You mentioned the truck should come with bigger tires from the factory. Is there any issues with putting slightly bigger tires on a brand new truck? I had a service guy at the GM dealership tell me if I put bigger tires on it will screw up the computer and void my warranty?? This didn't make sense to me but..
I have basically this same truck in the form of a Silverado ZR2 Bison and both the dealer and my aftermarket shop here in UT seem to agree that larger diameter, but same width (or slightly wider) would work fine (maybe need a flash). There is a width issue that is a limiter based on the design of the suspension, I believe. I have yet to change out the tires (11k miles so far), but will likely go with their suggested size (they both had the same suggestion). Really just waiting to confirm I can get K03s in the right size.
Realizing that a large portion of time is spent on road while getting to your favorite off road locations makes me ask, How is it on road as a daily driver?
2016 Sierra bought new has been awesome, ive always bought new every couple years, not this go around. Likely will buy in the spring a AT4 gasser, dont need the other things nor the extra cost. They are about due for a new designed gas 500hp v8, bet its coming.
2025 AT4X Sierra comes standard with AEV front number and tucked in exhaust pipes. AEV has more steel plates and steel bumper. I don’t think extra 15k is worth the AEV. It’s also heavier.
How awesome is that GMC Truck!? Excellent, if I needed a full sized truck that had everything I would like to have, that one fits. The ride quality looks very good. The interior is premium quality. As far as tire size, I just checked GMC website. The vehicle comes factory with a two inch lift and it has those nice tires. I think they are 32 or 33 inch. Which is actually fine if you still want to be able to tow. It has over a 7k LB towing capacity. When you get into 35" tires and plus, you could start losing towing capacity and or vehicle stability. I like the truck as is.
i would be willing to bet a bunch of people get in wrecks slowly sliding into stuff. I wonder if it would really be that hard to have ABS work from zero MPH instead of basically cutting off under a certain speed. Seems the software could see that the vehicle is moving (gyro?, delta from previous speed?) and the tires aren't and then pulse them a bit?
You said it tows over 10k pounds, which is cannot. Also, you didn’t mention the payload, which is very low due to the off-road shocks and all of the AEV pieces.
In My Opinion I'd Say The Best Looking, But 2nd Best To The RAM Power Wagon... I LIke The Heads Up Display And Multi Pro Tail Gate... The RAM Sounds Like Better Quality Overall And Has A Solid Front Axel And A Larger Truck bed to the At4x 1500... The At4x HD(Powerwagon Equivalent Doesn't Have Front Locking Diff or solid Axel)... Only about a 2 MPG Difference Between The 1500 At4x And The 2500 Powerwagon.... Disappointing The HD At4x Doesn't Have A Front Locker ... GMC Said It's Because It Doesn't Have Front Solid Axel And It Would Break Too Often.... I Read A lot Of Customers That Like Chevy And GM Trucks..That's A Down Side With Their Heavy Duties🤷... RAM Powerwagon Still In The Lead In 1st Place For Me As Much As I Like The Heads Up Display And The Multipro Tailgate 🤷.... 2 Awesome Trucks!... My 2 Favorites That I Would Buy.... Think The RAM TRX And Raptor Are Cool Trucks But More Of A Heavy Duty Off Road Truck Kind Of Guy Myself....
I sure wish GM would address the lifter issues instead of throwing all this offroad stuff on grocery getters. I just got a bill for $8,000 for blown lifters and a blown cam shaft. Luckily my extended warranty covered it at 86,000 and exactly 22 days left on the warranty. I just want a reliable truck without all the crap on it.
You guys said it……being worried about the almost $90k truck. How many people do you guys really think are going to take their new $90k truck off road like you are doing? Unfortunately, probably many of them will not be rock (or trail) crawling.
@ hahaha might wanna look that up. Even with big tires the efficiency is great. With highway tires, even greater. Ask yourself, why in the F would I lie? Throw that shade elsewhere
Also one of the best things about the GMC as opposed to the Chevrolet is Chevrolet has that big fugly black piece of plastic on top of the hood that gets in the way of any type of vision. Not to mention it makes the whole truck look cheap The GMC on the other hand has a proper hood on it
The way I see it ,if GM claims it's a great off road truck and charges $80000+ dollars , they made it , your reviewing and previewing it for its honest abilities, so if u damage something from improper mechanical or off road abilities or even accidental from driver damages GM CAN AFFORD TO REPLACE as such ANY big Manufacturing company
@bobcoats2708 not with the present options available where basic mechanical components are considered options and all the electronics are pushed to make it look expensive. I just want a solid version of the 1500 pickup where every gadget becomes an option. Just like a tractor or even a sxs, the base vehicle has all the mechanical advantages, and you can add all the optional features you need.
Love this truck but unfortunately its price is probably unobtainable for likely 90+ percent of the American population.... Most new trucks are now priced in the stratosphere in cost and liability, a broken system that has moved beyond the reach of the audience.
Tommy always insisting on not locking up. The front tire with traction was sitting in place doing nothing while in a perfect situation for a fully locked vehicle,, while crawling over a rock and lifting tires.
What a coincidence(or not)that TFL just buys this sisters vehicle. Yet, instead of driving the same thing with a slightly different badging, you run this. Making the follow up video with the Chevy sister running this trail now redundant. Albeit your 2025 sister has no locker and no AEV protection, but it has KO3 tires. Your dad should have bought this instead of the other GM sister truck. lol
I would take a Raptor over this any day. RAPTOR has more hp and tq more suspension travel by a LONG shot including articulation bigger tires just as many skid plates fromt and rear recovery hooks. The only thing better about this truck objectively is its not as wide and has a front locker, but also remeber the raptor can be equipped with a torrsion front diff as well.....
Best offroad truck money can buy. TRX and Raptor are just for show. I own a 2025 ZR2 (without AEV) with the diesel. And this is my 3rd 3.0 diesel truck, absolutely incredible. It was also only 72k MSRP before rebates
The looks are not there on this truck. The Colorado and HD look good. This looks like they just put different wheels/tires and bumpers/badging on a 1/2 ton. I'm not sure who chooses this over a Raptor or RHO.
My $8k all in XJ walks these types of “trails” all day long 😂😂😂…all these 60k+ “overlanding” trucks and suvs are a bunch of pavement queens that will be driven by soccer moms 99% of the time
Lol, my buddy wanted to go hunting at my rural property and we took his GMC AT4 to fill up the deer feeder. We have to drive down a trail to get the feeder. Well we ended up having to lug 50 lb bags of feed down hill to the feeder because he didn't want to take his pavement princess GMC down the trail and risk getting pinstripes lol. When I take my Jeep I can drive all the way to the feeder and not have to lug the feed to it 😔
No, not if you tow your stuff to the mountains her in CO. Nowhere to charge, and the range is too low when towing. I can buy diesel anywhere. I have a 3500 AT4, and I replaced the fuel tank with a Titan 56 gallon tank. I can go to NM and back without refueling.

AT4X AEV is the ZR2 Bison that has the same AEV stuff as the Sierra. The AT4X trim us the ZR2 and the AT4 is the Trail Boss
Great video!
Still a really good looking Truck and that 3.0 is great
The axle diameter looks tiny on that truck. Also, I really enjoy the Tommy & Case videos.
So.
Will 35's fit on this truck with no modifications?
Yeah that was a bit optimistic without studded tires on that packed ice, haha! 😄 Still, a cool video!
Yeap, wrong tires for the ice.
I want to see the G wagen here and also in the Moab.
Uhh no, it's actually 2400lbs
What's the towing capacity?
Attention GM, please bring to UK.
Thanks for the Video.
i would be willing to bet a bunch of people get in wrecks slowly sliding into stuff.
I like (LOVE) to see comparison torture tests REAL TORTURE TESTS
What’s your choice for the Motor if u bought it.
A wonder about 4 link rears and IFS or leaf spring rear and 4 link front endsvand such and sort of wonder why no 4 link FRONT &rearz
Why did TFL just buy the Chevrolet 2500 truck with no front/rear locker? You said it's a must.
[In Doc Brown’s voice] There’s that word again: “beefy”. Is that the only protein source available in the future?
So you didn't get billed
You guys said it……being worried about the almost $90k truck. How many people do you guys really think are going to take their new $90k truck off road like you are doing? Unfortunately, probably many of them will not be rock (or trail) crawling.
how much will it tow with those DSS shocks ?
or should I ask what’s the Payload rating of that truck ??
Towing is under 9k and payload is just over 1000
they need to offer the AT4X with a standard bed, then i'll trade my AT4 for an X. i don't want a grocery shopping bed.
I've got that same one in the 2500. With the real Duramax diesel not the little half size version
But no front locker?
The AEV bumper's adds to much extra weight. The 3.0L is only 50-60lbs heavier than the 6.2L.
Definitely needed studs for that climb. And there were no studs in this video 😃😂
Good vid- Looks like a fun day out.
What a shame this don’t get 35s like it’s smaller brother
6.2 for me
biggest limiting factor is the price!
Nice review Do u guys have a drivers license 🤓
Can you compare the lockers on the G-wagon you guys got with the electronic lockers on the cybertruck?
Love the duramax. I average 25-26 mpg
you are FOS
@ hahaha might wanna look that up. Even with big tires the efficiency is great. With highway tires, even greater. Ask yourself, why in the F would I lie? Throw that shade elsewhere
Also one of the best things about the GMC as opposed to the Chevrolet is Chevrolet has that big fugly black piece of plastic on top of the hood that gets in the way of any type of vision. Not to mention it makes the whole truck look cheap
The GMC on the other hand has a proper hood on it
Time for studded tires. 😊
The AT4X has two major issues, Small tires, Rear spring leafs.
The way I see it ,if GM claims it's a great off road truck and charges $80000+ dollars , they made it , your reviewing and previewing it for its honest abilities, so if u damage something from improper mechanical or off road abilities or even accidental from driver damages GM CAN AFFORD TO REPLACE as such ANY big Manufacturing company
chevy has made the body panels wat to big on that truck for it to do any off roading
Named every other off road model except Power wagons, maybe because its still king?
Or bc it’s a ¾ ton?
Power wagon is an HD.
Good morning.
Excellent platform for dirt bike folks.
Bison!
Nice truck but too much bells and whistles. What about a cheap single cab with front and rear lockers for half of that ridiculous price point.
Half the price? Not arguing that it would be a great option, but do you think that exists?
@bobcoats2708 not with the present options available where basic mechanical components are considered options and all the electronics are pushed to make it look expensive. I just want a solid version of the 1500 pickup where every gadget becomes an option. Just like a tractor or even a sxs, the base vehicle has all the mechanical advantages, and you can add all the optional features you need.
Where has Roman been hiding? I miss his humorous take on things.
No no I’ve been liking watching without him!!! I stopped for a while because of him
Romans the best! He was picking out trucks on the other channel this morning I believe
Do you have winter Tures?
Tures?
Which is better, GMC or Chevy? GMC has always been higher, build and price same options it's about $5000!
Love this truck but unfortunately its price is probably unobtainable for likely 90+ percent of the American population.... Most new trucks are now priced in the stratosphere in cost and liability, a broken system that has moved beyond the reach of the audience.
An awesome vehicle, no doubt. But $88k for an GMC pickup truck???
I’m sorry… but what! 😆
Tommy always insisting on not locking up. The front tire with traction was sitting in place doing nothing while in a perfect situation for a fully locked vehicle,, while crawling over a rock and lifting tires.
Idk why anyone would buy this when they can get a Rebel for $60k.
Yeah we need a better video over this truck
What a coincidence(or not)that TFL just buys this sisters vehicle. Yet, instead of driving the same thing with a slightly different badging, you run this. Making the follow up video with the Chevy sister running this trail now redundant. Albeit your 2025 sister has no locker and no AEV protection, but it has KO3 tires. Your dad should have bought this instead of the other GM sister truck. lol
88 grand!!! Hard pass.
I can afford any of the trucks but I will not pay the money for them period.
Maybe the girls should’ve handled this video… I put my money on Jen getting it done!
Try hill decent so you don't slip down hill backward.
Yeah, the Raptor is just for show. You must be new to youtube.
90k. wtf.
80k truck 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤔 car companies lost their mind
no stock chevy can handle 35's cause GM thinks square fenders look cool. foolish fender design limits the tire size, sorry
slides on ice?????? i dont know guys, i'd prefer my cars not slide on ice.
I'll stick with hummer.😊
LMFAO
Answer to the big question….. NO.
At 2:33 it hits rock just before they say we hope not to touch rock... yet another joke of a video
The looks are not there on this truck. The Colorado and HD look good. This looks like they just put different wheels/tires and bumpers/badging on a 1/2 ton. I'm not sure who chooses this over a Raptor or RHO.
I agree generally agree with your comments. However, this thing gets 30 mpg on the hwy.
Couldn't watch. The stupid reality TV music is too much.
Not worth the money
When I take my Jeep I can drive all the way to the feeder and not have to lug the feed to it 😔
90k? Buy an EV truck!
Yeah buy an EV truck and see it devalue by 50% in the first year... Great advice!
