Being 74 years old I always hunted deer and wild hogs with a 30-06 Springfield, it wasn’t until I went Elk hunting in Wyoming that I bought the 340 Weatherby. Back in the day Barns made the MRX bullet and using the 250 gr bullet was able to make a clean shot at 426 yards with a 40 degree elevation. I know humans have been killed at those ranges with the 06 but they’re a lot tougher than us humans.

You are a pretty persistent guy, you will figure it out. Guns and ammo and Memorial Day make me reflect on those that served and made us free. We are extremely blessed and lucky to live in the USA. Thanks for sharing.

Break it in then make a decision. It's starting to tighten up.
I just bought a 300wby on the 'hunter' platform and my groups are worse than that to start.
Only after the 2nd box of factory ammo did it start to tighten up to 1' to 1 1/2.
I'm going to start load development soon, factory ammo is more practical for break-in than using components.
Beautiful rifle, congratulations on your dream coming true!

Don't worry it'll shrink. My 340 weatherby magnum was exactly the same 2" groups at 100 but the second time I took it out it was 1.5" and now it's under an inch. I'm shooting some old factory ammo 210gr spire pint and I got some amazing velocity from those 3230 fps.

I shot 250gr SGKs and 250gr Partitions. Never tried the ABLRs. Norma MRP and IMR 7828ssc were the best powders. No reason to shoot lighter bullets - that's not what the 340 Bee is for.
Retorque your action screws and make sure you first bump the butt on the floor to make sure the recoil lug is firm against the wood. Also, check your scope screws. The 340 is brutal on scopes and mounts.

I only have one weatherby rifle that likes the cheaper hornady ammo.
The more expensive ammo will shoot I bet.
Otherwise, I'm sure you can reload some accurate loads.
And by the way, if you give up on the mead bullets I might be interested in buying what's left.
Do they make bonded in less than 30cal?
It's hard to find information on them.
    Thanks!

I have a 340 Weatherby with a medium contour barrel. I have obtained decent groups with several different weight bullets and loads. The recoil was also strong but reasonable. The slim contour barrel might have some effect on your accuracy. Perhaps a lighter charge weight load would improve the accuracy. Mr. Kleingunther added about 2 inches of bedding to the forward end of my stock on an older 300 Weatherby. That also improved accuracy. Nosler has good load data for 180 to 300 grain hunting bullets in the 340. I've had good results using their data for the 300 and 340 loads

Gorgeous rifle! I had a 340 Weatherby many years ago and I even paid a little extra for some really nice wood. I love Weatherby's Mark V, but that 340 was just too much for me. I did not have a muzzle break, but it was Magna-ported. Enjoy your new "thumper"!

I’ve had issues with the direct mount style rings. Put a pair of quality rings on a rifle and load combo that has shot hundreds of rounds into great groups, and had a 2.5” shotgun pattern.
Back to the pic rail and a sturdy pair of heavy “tactical” rings and accuracy came back immediately.
Could be worth checking especially with that high recoil system.
Athlon Ares line has been great for me with zero retention, repeatable tracking, etc. I have two of the Ares ETR’s and both have been solid over 2-3 years and thousands of rounds on multiple center fire and rimfire rifles.

Glad you got your stock repaired. Doesn't seem to match weatherby accuracy guarantee with quality factory loads. The 340 weatherby is one of their harder kicking cartridges so I hope you can get sub m.o.a. groups . Enjoy the shoulder surgeries down the line😅 as you fire that mule . Shot a 460 weatherby once,no fun, crawled the stock and almost broke my nose as thumb was jammed into my nose. Careful with those hard kicking weatherbys, they do bite !

Take it for what it's worth, but over the last 30+ years I've had people say their mark 5 deluxe will not shoot. I even bought my wife one for $800 , that only had 18 rounds down the barrel. First thing I do is bed the action and barrel. The wood with thin barrels seem to heat up change the point of impact

Shoot a couple of boxes through the 340 to get it broken in, it should tighten up after a few rounds, you mention recoil, that could be some of your grouping issues, also handloads tend to shoot better than the factory rounds, my mark v doesn't have a break, its favorite loads get down under a half inch, for three shots, as a plus, it makes brass to reload, looking forward to your progress Austin

My 7mm W.M. is pretty finicky when it comes to ammo, and my groups with 150gr+ were all bad, although not as bad as the ones in your video. Once I switched to 140gr TTSX I can shoot 0.8" - 1.19" groups. For a gun that's older than me, I'd say that's pretty okay. So, keep shooting and keep trying different ammo/loads, your groups WILL get smaller!

Can't say I have ever seen 2.5" groups but I have seen Weatherby MkV, Bergera, Browning x bolt all shoot weird groups with certain loads (up to 1.75 groups) oddly enough the only gun I have that doesn't care about brand or bullet type is my Savage 114 american classic in 22-250. The worst I have seen it shoot is 1.25 moa with a 62 grain bullet that is pushing the limits of its ability to stabilize with a 1in12 twist. Every other load has been under 1moa.

If you don't dip your barrel in a fresh 50 gallon barrel full of new Lucas gun cleaner after every shot for at least 2 hours between shots for the first 200 shots you must hate your gun because you didn't break your barrel in properly

@@BigTimberLodge no reason to pretend you are stupid. Most manufacturers suggest a break in process and go as far as specific instructions. I know it's somehow cool these days to neglect your guns, but in my opinion if it tightened the groups 1/8 inch that is worth a little TLC. You do you cool guy.

@briankopp1369 that's where you're wrong, kiddo. Weatherby suggests a break-in period for barrels but even admitted on their podcast that it was optional. Christensen suggests a break-in, but their rifles are sub-par. However, if you contact most major manufacturers of rifles directly, they will tell you their barrels don't need to be broken-in.

@briankopp1369 Let me guess your favorite content creator is Ron Spomer Outdoors, and you get all your "how to take care of your firearm" information from Brownells and Midway USA. Your favorite hunting round was the 6.5 Creedmoor until you got your hands on a "real man's cartridge," the 7mm PRC. I bet you believe the box velocity Hornady prints on their factory ammunition, too.

    Try with no muzzle brake

Consider an apollo max LR muzzle brake. According to youtube testing results, recoil can be reduced another 15-20% lower than your current muzzle brake. The muzzle brake you have theoretically reduces recoil by about 30%. The Apollo's are consistently around 46%. Good luck and as always get a lead sled.

Get rid of that crummy break and it'll be a lot better too shoot I have a couple 340s and they're both enjoyable. Would love to see you develop a load for the hammer 267 grain tipped bullets
