  • The Hedden Knot is a reliable Friction Hitch which is very easy to tie, and uses a Prusik Loop, which is commonly used to tie other friction hitch such as the Prusik, Klemheist and Autoblock. In this video, JRB demonstrates how to tie the Hedden Knot with only one hand, for potential use in emergency, self-recovery, self-rescue, injury and rescue situations where the climber only has the use of one hand. For precedent, consider that the one handed Bowline knot has been a long-standing "must-have" tool in the toolbox of sailors for purposes of water self rescue. Related Videos:

Very interesting, I've realized that all mechanical back up or fall arrest devices that I remember now, they need 2 hands to install 'em

Is it ok to use a self made loop -maybe tied up with a hunters bend to make your own loop for a hedden knot

It works and works really well!

Absolutely. I do this all the time. Hunters Bend is not considered as strong as a Double Fisherman's Knot but if used correctly in a climbing application, there is no practical way we can test those limits.

That's just a small remnant of a length of Maxim Canyon Elite I had laying around. It's advertised as 9mm, but its over 9.5. My favorite ropes are listed here:
