How to care for Bulbophyllum orchids - watering, fertilizing, reblooming

- Bulbophyllum orchids are the largest group of orchids in nature, with about 2000 known species. Many beautiful representatives are available to orchid growers too, so let's talk about some general care knowledge.
Luckily, these orchids are not very hard to maintain healthy in a home. Temperature wise they do best in intermediate temperatures, between 20-26 degrees Celsius should be ideal for them. Humidity doesn't seem to be the major factor in their care, they withstand low humidity very well.
Light should be intermediate as well, they don;t need very bright light to bloom and do well. Slightly more than what Phalaenopsis orchids would like should be enough for these orchids, so eastern exposures are idea, while southern exposures should be shaded.
The most important aspect of their care is making sure they are always moist, they do not like to stay dry for long periods of time. In between watering the media should dry out slightly but not completely.
Many species and hybrids have splendid blooms, but some poses a foul smell, so before purchasing one read the description carefully. Some Bulbophyllums on the other hand have a nice fragrance, so chose the ones that appeal to you the most and that can be kept in your conditions.

Hi Danni, great video - as always. I must say, Bulbos are not so particularly fussy, but the ones, I lost, died during winter. The are really prone to rot during winters, if kept too moist. In the end I sold the last of my Bulbos because of that. Maybe I shold give it a go again. Your Elisabeth Ann Buckleberry is just stunning, I must say.
+Helle Ascanius Jørgensen oh maybe it was a ventilation issue? I get some issues in winter too that's why I always keep the fan running in winter and open the window for a few minutes every day to freshen up the air, helps a lot. I say give it another go :)
...found this!!!!
Been looking coz ive got more than 5specie of them...thanks Dani🤗...
Great tips. Tks for sharing Danny.😊
What an amazing orchid family
Hi Danny. I hope you don't mind, but I mentioned you and your channel in my latest drawing video and also left a link to your channel in the description.
+Tiffany Lovering How can I mind? thank you so much! :D
Hi Danny! I thought I was the only one with a pet bird AND an orchid obsession, but I was wrong! I feel pretty orchid-savvy, but there is one thing that has stumped me. Why do some of my recently purchased orchids grow new roots that are noticeably fatter than the existing roots? (the existing roots are not shriveled, they look normal) Also, these orchids are coming from greenhouses and are very healthy. Thank you :)
+Lexy Coffindaffer Hi Lexy, well as the orchid ages its organs become larger as well. Also genetics plays a role too. If the new roots look larger than the previous ones it's a very good sign, the orchid is growing and evolving nicely in your care :)
Excellent, very interesting and engaging video!
Thanks for the heads up on the fragrance! :)
+Charlie B (Bodhi's Mom) no problem :)
Bulbophyllum Elisabeth Ann Buckleberry is so beautiful. I'll have to add it to my wishlist. Thanks!
+Orchids & a Dutchy it really is, plus it doesn't stink :P
Thank you for this information! How long do the blooms last and when do they flower?
Hi Danny , when do you cut and where do you cut the flower spike ? I watched your cutting flower spikes video but you didn’t talk about bulbophyllum
Thanks Nicci
i know I'm pretty randomly asking but does anyone know a good site to watch newly released series online?
@Legend Jimmy lately I have been using Flixzone. Just search on google for it =)
Danni, Thanks for the great video! I recently got a bulbophyllum Wilmar galaxy star, and it's trying to escape its pot! By which I mean one of the pseudobulbs is coming out of the bottom drainage holes. It looks healthy, so I'm hesitant to repot it right now, but when I do, how difficult is it going to be to pot it together with the rest of the pseudobulbs (on the same level?). I had also wondered about mounting it. Can I separate this single pseudobulb to mount it without having to mess with the rest of the plant?
I just bought an approximately 10 inch bulbophyllum phalaenopsis mounted to a board. Will it kill it if I transplant it to a pot?
One of these starting growing on my tree stump outside next to some other orchids. Interesting
In your opinion, which Bulbophyllum variety would you say is the least fussy one and suitable for begginers? Especially for people who live in warmer climates.
+John John well I don't have many of them and there doesn't seem to be a variety which is easy, but I would say the Elizabeth Ann is really easy, so check parentage as well :)
Danny,
My friend from Japan gave me a cutting of his Elizabeth Ann and I have kept it alive for almost 2.5 years.
I was keeping it in my camper on my land in Northern California and it grew a new leaf last year. It recently was left alone for a few days and a mice ate the new leaf growth.
I have brought it to my apartment and placed it on a window sill facing east.
The roots are a light brown color and are not mushy or wet. I do not see healthy green roots now as in your video.
The crowns look fine and the 2 existing leaves have been with it for over 2 years.
Do you think I can save this orchid? I had planned on getting cuttings and putting it in a glass house I am building.
Thank you.
Did it make it?
Great video, thanks!
Do orchids die if you keep moving them from here to there. Do they get sun scald. Does glass or terracotta pots work for this orchid.
Great video! I love the word "buckleberry" lol
+oogalaboo you know what me too, love saying it :)))
Which type is the big bulbphylum? That is a huge one, I have a couple tropical minis.
Hi , I love your videos, question, I just purchase a bulbophyllum masdevalliaceum, any idea of the smell, txs
Hello, how to propagate this orchid?
Thank you.
Hello Danny, subtitles are almost ready. I'll send them to you perhaps today or tomorrow at the latest ^^
+Antonia Orchids ok I saw you already sent them, thank you will check them out and try to apply them :D
Hey Danny! I got my first Bulbophyllum eariler this year, however it had quite dry roots. I left it be to settle in to its new environment watering once a week but in 7/8 months there werent any signs of growth. I have since repotted twice because the first time the medium stayed too soggy and caused those dry roots to rot (ugh) and the second time to get things just right! As I had to remove a few quite a few sad roots I wonder if you have any time tips to encourage root growth?
Hi,
I bought a 2 pseudobulb cirr elizabeth ann buckleberry ( on the bargain table ) @ the S. Barbara Orchid show back in Feb. I mounted it with some spaghum on a small branch and have kept it moist. I can not get it to throw out roots, growth and forget about flowering.
It was purchased from Cal Orchids.
Shouldn't it throw out roots by now?
Everything else is doing well so this really gets to me.
Shall I try bagging it?
I am in S. Cal., and I am growing it outside as the nights are warm but keep it in the shade during the day.
Any suggestions to jump start the roots would be welcomed.
Best
Glenda
HI Glenda, how long have you had it for? it's not uncommon for orchids do spend a lot of time doing nothing until they grow something and from what I noticed with mine, it tends to make a new psb once a year, never more than one per lead in a year. So it might just be that it is still acclimating. If it doesn't look like it's about to die then I wouldn't worry yet :)
HIIIIIIII can you give us some update on your Bulbophyllums??? I bought this weekend three plants : ambrosia, medusae and lasiochilum. I hope I will be able to bloom them! I repotted them in bark, sphagnum and some perlite, do you think it's ok?
Not related to its care, but a general observation after watching so many videos on YT about orchids ;). I’ve noticed some orchid growers refer to their orchids as he/him and then other as she/her lol. Wonder what causes people to call them one or the other ;).
Hi, my native language is latin derived and nouns have genders ☺️
love this collor .
+O. Crooij :)
6:12 is that someone honking in the background?
Hi.
So my bulbophylum has lost it's leaf and is very dehydrated. How do I rehabilitate it so it can regain leaves. I submerge it in water the moment I realized it was drying. I changed its media to Coco husk which retains water. What else can I do?
Well, I just ordered a Bulbophyllum Sanguineopunctatum. (amongst other things!). I am stumped about which window to place it. My south-west window, which got loads of light in March, now doesn't get light until about noon. Here we are in early June and my east facing window gets early morning sun till about noon. My catts are all in the south west window, which I suspect will get loads of light as the sun lowers in the sky during the winter. I was enchanted by the Bulbo, but my east window has low humidity?
Any suggestions?
Hi, research a bit about this species and see if it has any special requirements. In general though bulbos don't need a lot of bright light, they do fine in Phalaenopsis light. However the humidity helps :) If the south window is sheltered then it might be better due to the humidity, but if there is any danger of leaf burn the other window will be ok too and just don't let it sit bone dry for too long. Hope this helps :)
Great advice! My south window is huge. But also divided. It is in my designated "orchid room" which also happens to be my bedroom (so I hope it's not a stinky one) I have triple shading on the side that has phals and 1 layer sheer curtain on my catt side. I can control humidity, temperature, air circulation....etc. So my (maybe) stinky Bulbo will go on the Phal side. Think I will mount it because I also ordered Brassavola "Little Stars" which will arrive mounted. I don't have room for as many orchids as I want, so I will use my intuition on what to put where. PS - the phals are going crazy, but I took my time adjusting them to the extra light! All, so much fun!
Hi Danni, That plant is Spectacular, love it, :-)
+Rosemary457 Thanks Rosemary, I do love it too :D
do you give any of them a dry winter rest?
Is the Bulbophyllum plumatum suitable for warmer temperatures?
Thanks!
+Ethan Trenaman Hello, I am not sure I never tried it. They usually like intermediate to warmish conditions, but google it and read about it just to make sure :) they are not cool growers as far as I know though ;)
+MissOrchidGirl Ok, thanks!
I would really like an update, even if this is a great video.
Hi, check the video I made on Friday, you'll see it there :)
Beautiful..! :)
+John Benedict ORCHIDS Thank you John :)
PLESE TELL ME: What is the first species shown in this video? I have the exact same species! The specific name was never given to me. Thank you.
+onceIhadalove Hi, this is the Bulbophyllum Elizabeth Ann Buckleberry, ruclips.net/video/fcutdPkqvyA/видео.html
I would have to tell my bulbophyllums about not being fussy lol They are cool orchid's and have awesome flowers some stinky and some not lol
+Growing Things why what's wrong with your bulbos?
they are dead , I don't know how but the rhizome turned brown and rotted and spread thru the plants. I consulted a local expert on the matter and he said most likely bacteria infection
+Growing Things oooow :( sorry to hear
yeah it sucks but you move on and buy more lol I got some good info from that local expert and will apply that to the culture of a new bulbo
Danny, didn't you just kill two of these? How can you tell us how to keep them alive?
;P
Kidding! I love your mounted bulbophyllum barbigerum - I can tell it immediately by the roots. Let's have a race to bloom it!
I am eager to see my NOID mystery bulbo bloom. It has some new growth thing on it but I am not sure if it is a new pseudobulb or a flower spike - one can hope for flowers!!
Lovely video with great beginner info!
+Astrid lol well I know how to kill them, that's a plus :))) ahahha I have a feeling you will have blooms before me, not sure why lol
Oh, I meant by the bulbs... not the roots. It has almost coin-shaped bulbs!!
It certainly is my turn to have some nice blooms from my orchids, isn't it!!
Hey, how long did it take your brassavola orchids to go from sheath to blooming? I am sure mine is getting enough sun and water and stuff, but I am just scared the sheaths are stalling haha
+Astrid ooooh they take their sweet time if they want to, plus a sheath doesn't really mean a spike. Just hang in there, if it wants to bloom it will bloom :)
I know! The flower spike on my colmonara wildcat took a full three months from nub to open flowers!!
I tend to kill the tiny ones on mounts. Have killed maybe 6. I have wonderful success with hybrids like EA Buckleberry, and also some Medusa hybrids. I think Dani is giving good advice here, but she should mention that beginners might want to start with hybrids.
Where can I order Bulbophyllum Plumatum?
Bulbasaur!
