  • Welcome to the full review of the Dad Bod by Justin Ternes in Dark Arts Construction - the Dad Bod I've been surfing is a 5'5 x 20 x 2 5/8 - 31L
You may have checked out our Initial Thoughts clip on the Dad Bod, since then we've had a few more surfs, tried out some different fin combos, and really sussed the board out!
The Dad Bod is super fun, and such a versatile board for the majority of the waves I'm surfing here in Sydney Australia ranging from 2-6ft.
    From darkartssurf.c...
The DadBod is a condensed shortboard design based off of a design JT shaped in early 2000. This board is wider and thicker but has contemporary shortboard rails. Flatter entry rocker, double to single concave, and a wide tail help the DadBod excel in knee to head high waves, soft or punchy. One of our most versatile models considering its range. Ridden 4-6 inches smaller than your average shortboard, allows it to fit in tight places on a wave, while the extra float helps for engineering speed and enhancing paddle power.
The Dad Bod helps maintain fun in less than ideal conditions while still being progressive in decent waves. A favorite of JT team rider Kyle Knox, who named the board for its diversity. It has become one of his mainstays for small to medium size days. The DadBod is always there for a good time!
Great board for Beginner / Intermediate level surfers to take it to the next level and Advanced level surfers to maximize fun. The DadBod is made as a thruster, but all Dark Arts surfboards are customizable. The DadBod, combined with the Dark Arts vacuumed carbon attributes, flex-back, durability, and supreme weight, make this model a sure shot!
While we checked out a range of fins from Futures Fins for the Dad Bod, the best quad combo was the AM1 control series as the leading fins, and the Haydenshapes quad rears.
For a thruster set, it was the Jack Freestone Generation Series set -
    From futuresfins.co...
The Freestone Generation fin is a large size Speed Generating fin with a Ride Number of 8.0. Jack rides this fin when the conditions are small and he needs a little more zing. Generating speed is the key to new life in small surf. The latest in speed generating fins, the Gen Series features a V2 foil for fluidity and a unique blend of uni-directional carbon and fiberglass for a more stable flex pattern.
Thanks so much to Justin for this amazing board, I'm very grateful to be able to check it out!
Thanks also to @yousurf_ifilm for the surf footage!

The bottom, looked very similar to the FW Sweet Potato & Baked Potato. A lot thinner through the nose though & a lot more rocker. Looked like it was super quick, fun & responsive.
That dark arts finish looks sick!

Bro I got the biggest twice baked potato 🥔 they make and it’s SO fun. Fast as a rocket 🚀 and loose too, goes vertical in the pocket. A wave catching machine as well. Quad setup

Haven’t ridden them, but this is much more performance than those, especially in waves over 2ft - and that’s due to that rocker you mentioned!

Great review Craig! Have you ridden the Dark Arts Deviled Egg? I'd love to hear your thoughts on that shape. I'm stuck between that and the Dad Bod, but they are quite different shapes. Thanks!

Hey! No I haven’t, but one thing I can vouch for is the construction - either model in Dark Arts won’t disappoint!

Hey Craig, awesome reviews.....and you're podcasts with shapers and surfers are equally awesome and enlightening. I just have one question: in regards to when you say the waves are 1-4 foot or 2-5 feet etc...do you mean the back of the wave or the front of the wave for measurement? I know in Hawaii they always mean the back of the wave, but here in the East coast (USA) where it pretty much sucks all the time we always refer to the wave face. If we measured by back of wave we'd be talking in inches half the gosh darn time! Asking, cause when it's 1-3 feet here its barely got the power to pick you up on anything other than a longboard. That probably also has something to do with period....we typically rarely have waves over 8-9 seconds period, unlike the Pacific ovean where the periods are waaaayyyy better.....anyways..thanks again and happy surfing mate!

Hey! Good question, and something that is funny in surf culture.
I guess I’m referring to the back, so two foot is around chest high, 3-4ft is head high and just over.
If you’re looking at a Dad Bod for where you are, connect with Justin as I was with him last week and I know he’s got options with a flatter rocker on the Dad Bod, and I think flattening it out a little would be perfect where you surf.
Also the Dark Arts tech is 🔥🔥🔥

I’m looking to get the pyzel shadow in dark arts. However I’m unsure about the construction. What’s the difference between the epoxy than say the dark arts board.

    • @TheSurfboardGuide
      @TheSurfboardGuide  3 года назад +1

      Hey mate!
Well to start with, standar epoxy would be wrapped in fibreglass, where this is wrapped in carbon fibre.
Also (and i'm careful not to get too technical here in case i get it incorrect), but these are bagged so that a lot of the excess resin is taken out of the board to keep it nice and light, where your normal epoxy has excess resin sanded away (Dark Arts still have light sanding).
For more details listen to our podcast with Justin Ternes where he discusses the construction!

The more you ride it the more you sort out the squirreliness because it magnifies the response with a heavier foot due to the carbon flex almost like elastic band fitness training vs free weights if that makes any sense.. 🤷
