- The Maserati Grecale packs a mighty 330bhp in Modena form but is it really a true rival for the likes of the Porsche Macan and Alfa Romeo Stelvio?

So basically, if there's a problem with the screen, you're knackered. I just love the irony of not being allowed to use a mobile phone when driving but then car manufacturers make basic vehicle functions - that we used to control intuitively - menu driven on screens that are nowhere near as easy or safe to use.
Spot on. Totally agree!
laws are daft arent they, all these touch screens...
100% agree.
In case you didn't know, buttons aren't exactly unbreakble either.
@@N1ckZ The screen on the Maserati also controls PRND, so if the screen fails, the car is inoperative. Hence my original comment.
the best thing about the paddle shifters is that you don't need to use buttons P D N R because you can do everything with paddles, when you start the car with the right paddle you go to drive, if you want to reverse you press left paddle, if you want neutral press both paddles simultaneously, when you stop you don't need to put in Park to turn it off, after pressing Stop it goes to Park automatically. so you don't need to use the buttons at all.
Harry I enjoyed watching your honest way to go bringing out the good 👍 and the ➖ of your car review.
"I like this rain. Car moves around." [Note opposite lock through favourite corners] Brown seat moment for most of the rest of us 😁
I like the second hand going anticlockwise lal💜🙏💜
A man with two watches never knows what time it is.
To summarize: Basically, they're really good, but way too expensive. Need the V6 to deliver the expected Maserati experience. Would be great if the Trofeo was the price of the Modena, but it's not.
A dark red one would look excellent. You can’t have a grey boring looking Maserati lol
Hopefully one day cars will look pretty again, but not yet it seems. It's hard to get excited about a boring looking blob of a car with a 2L engine.
Looks like a Ford Edge :/
Swap the badges over and from the front if you told me it was a Ford I'd have to really look. The grille I suppose, but yeah very uremarkable looking.
needs to be yellow
It's built on the Giorgio platform shared by the Giulia and Stelvio. Possibly one of the best platforms for any vehicle, ever. The multi-air 2.0L engine is also brought over from the Stelvio / Giulia. One of the best 2.0 4cyl engines on the market. Far from boring.
I see nothing boring about it. It’s quite good looking and the fact you f it being a 2L engine is irrelevant. It’s fast, it sounds great and it handles very well.
To be honest , i wish the suv thing would go out of fashion. Apart from the trident grill, it could be a Cayenne/Kia cross. Struggle to find it amongst the herd in the supermarket car park. Stick with my old gen 7 Celica. Get lots of positive comments too for a nearly 20 year old car. Bring back the Coupe. Great video though.
I used to agree. Then I bought an SUV. The ease of getting in and out compared to a 'normal car' let alone a Celica (I owned an 190vvt)! Is easy. The slightly higher riding position is nice. But obviously. SUVs are hardly the last thing in driving dynamics. But truthfully, how often are you experiencing that last ten percent of performance in a sporty car. I get it. But also get it 😮
@@philipjames3526 You are quite right about the access, I turn 60 next month. Just love the more dynamics and looks, would prefer a Cayman but funds won't allow. Reckon the Celica is geniune future classic. Don't see this happening in suv world. Think smart watch, rather than a mechanical time piece. Cheers for replying.
@@markbrennan4693funny you should mention Cayman in an SUV/Crossover thread, because I have a 4.0 Boxster for my weekend thrills but absolutely love our Macan even though it’s only the 4cyl model - it’s such a brilliant all-rounder. The age of your Celica is making me think that you’re maybe stuck in the ‘90s with your assumptions regarding the handling deficiencies of SUVs - the current crop of “sporty” Crossovers are as far removed in their abilities from the early Merc ML’s and RAV4s as you’d find a new Cayman or GR86 would be to your Celica. Keep it as the “quirky fun classic” that it now is, but as a daily you won’t regret moving on…
Wait until everyone produces only EVs. Basically no difference between all brands.
Agreed. SUV = bus. Not interested in buses. £85K for a 4 pot, no button, expected to break down bus, no thanks. I'd rather buy a used M5
For the love of God - no-one wants 101 different displays - they just want to get in a car and drive …. Drives me mental - I don’t want options, I just want a car …
CAN THIS F-ING SUV TREND DIE ALREADY????
Lamborghini has sold more than 20,000 units of the Urus. This year Porsche has sold more Macans (20,841) than 911s, 718s, Taycans and Panameras COMBINED (appx. 20,400).
So, no. Not a chance, unfortunately.
They allow brands to thrive with great sales figures, plus they offer a little practicality for petrolheads and badge chasers alike. Not my cup of tea particularly, but I can see the attraction. Just listen to Harry's summation.
Very nice review, as always! It would be interesting to see the Trofeo version. How it compares to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio quadrifoglio. I had a Stelvio quadrifoglio - probably the best handling sports SUV out there! The problem is this thing is so dynamic, you end up driving way too fast! Now driving a much more reasonable Levante modena - it's so nice looking and so Italian! Love it!
That reverse/drive/reverse/drive on the paddles must be brilliant four wriggling into parking spaces. Rather damned clever! 👍
But not as simple as Mercedes' stalk-mounted auto selector
I didn’t know it did that! Going to try that out.
I have a Stelvio (and had a Giulia before) , they do the same but only to put it in D with the right lever! It doesnt work to put in R for which you always need to use the stick. Wish I could add that feature to mine - I love it
@@Frangranceif you put it to neutral first (pull both paddles) you can select reverse by just pushing the gear selector (no need to hold the shift button) to save 0,003 secs of your life.
@@mikewallace1723if you’re one of the early cars, yes it’ll work and super friendly to use and makes perfect sense, if you’re a later one it’ll only do drive with the right paddle, if it’s a current one it’s not possible at all which is a real shame. Apparently to do with some bulls*** legislation (probably from the states) where some idiot has inadvertently pulled a paddle and crashed. New GranTurismo doesn’t have that feature at all even though same set up, as per Grecale filtering through now 😢
I like it a lot . But for the money I think I’d go for a Stelvio QV
Looks just like a ford puma
I thought exactly the same as you!
Great minds think alike. 😅
I said exactly the same in my comment. What has happened to modern car design? This is just more jelly mould rubbish!
A fat puma, yes.
TBH the Puma is quite a fun quirky drive with that three cylinder engine, and probably one of the better looking crossover type vehicles around at present. Certainly not up the levels of the Maserati, but definitely cheap thrills.
Nothing really special to look at here....
I don't care what it says, this is not a Maserati. It's a shopping trolley with Maserati badge. Abomination.
Harry, I feel you, I have been a sucker for Maserati since the late 90s when I bought a biturbo, and drove from Boston to California and drive it daily for two years (!!). It never broke! I have owned several Ferrari’s since then (308, 355 spider, 365gtc) but the very late Merak SS I have now is the keeper, no hydraulics.
I should probably make a video on the Merak as I have stroked the engine to 3.3L and done some internal modifications (looks totally stock), but it has a bit over 300hp now at 7300rpm. It goes well. Very exciting car now. I call it the Merak R
Would LOVE to see a video on the 94 Maserati Ghibli CUP 😊 Another great video Harry thanks 😊
A Maserati that farts like an Audi with a 4cyl engine 😢 Personally I could not live with that screen to control everything & when it breaks you're screwed, car wont work . It looks very generic too, no real stand out qualities just £84k of averageness.
Couldn’t agree more.
I thought those upshift farts were considered cool 😂
You pretty much said what I was thinking! No way I’d part with £84k for a 4 Cylinder either.
Totally agree!
Poor Maserati! If I think that soon they will fart like ... Peugeot...
I feel like crying!!
Your point about the screen describes almost every new car on sale though 😂 - not exactly a downside unique to the grecale
Clearly a very lucrative market for luxury brands… pity they’re all prepared to throw away their heritage for the fad
right? It is almost like they are companies with the sole purpose of making money. Crazy
I’m afraid this car leaves me completely cold. I’m probably getting old.
Agreed. “Save the planet; build two and a half tonne four wheel drive blobs.”
Capitalism cares not for heritage! Unless it can exploit it
@@jamesbarrett5534 couldn’t agree more… like an appliance, a toaster or kettle
The base car is £10K more than the Macan, it’ll also depreciate on an epic scale. Probably a bargain 2-3 years down the line…..
Yup. I checked out used Levantes recently. Shocking drop in price. Maserati REALLY needs to address this.
@@DDd-hr6mzlevantes, understandably they’ve been out dated for some years now with bad reliability hence the big drop in price. nobody wants them. the grecale on the other hand, just gonna have to wait and see in 2-3 years
@@sunnysaenngarm5375 I don't have any reading on the reliability on Levantes, and I really don't trust the surveys. Even if they were stone ax reliable, the stigma of the past will drag them down. Same with Alfa, which is unfortunate.
Anyone notice that when Harry did a close up on the dash central clock, the second hand was going the wrong way?? 😂
Can't believe the comments didn't light up with this 🤔
Have 25K miles on my ‘23 Modena - has been fantastic all around; great road car; get 350-375 miles per tank on every day driving; very comfortable and everything works - zero issues; price, yes on the high side, but do I ever get positive comments from passengers and viewers alike. Lots of love about this car!
30'000 miles on my trofeo
Thanks for sharing I am testing driving a couple this week.
I'm on the verge of taking early retirement and looking for a car to enjoy with all my spare time. Having read what you have said, I think I have found the answer!
This is a fantastic car. Just bought it. It looks miles better and more stunning than Macan.
I’m really impressed with this car, however, I dislike the Ford puma looking front end and the Mercedes looking rear end, otherwise, great review and would I consider one over the Germans , most definitely yes, but it is definitely Maserati being pushed down the road of this suv design trend. Ultimately, I would still choose a Range Rover for my needs 👍
what are you talking about? Ford probably took inspiration from Maserati in the first place, the front end is a direct inspiration from all the previous models starting with the 200S and the likes of the 4200GT.
@@nailil5722 Still looks like a Ford Puma
Do the clocks go backwards in all the new Maserati or is it a feature of this model?
Came here to comment the same thing
Later on it ticks clockwise, so I assume he reversed that clip
Where is your Italian sense of passion, man. 😄
It's so fast that it goes back in time
@@danmayberry1185 I guess in the past
Two of my favourite cars of all time are the Ghibli and the Bora fro the late 60's's/70's, an era when 300+bhp meant at least 8 cylinders and big capacity with a decent soundtrack👍 It's interesting to see how modern tech is achieving high power from comparatively small engines while hitting ever tightening emission targets, even though they may lack character compared to their forbears. Big colour displays in cars are not my cup of tea I'm afraid and this particular genre of vehicle isn't one that interests me personally although this one does seem to offer a decent alternative for the money compared to the opposition.
Why is the clock ticking backwards at 10:10?🤔
It's a Stallantis product, so if anything significant goes wrong outside of warranty, or it has a minor prang, it'll go to the junk yard because of how insane their parts pricing is and how poor their after-market support is. As with so many "luxury" brands these days, they are lease and return - not own - and incredibly bad environmentally.
@@Beer_Dad1975 Leasing is not a protection financially. Might save you the headache but whatever you save in parts pricing you will lose in depreciation because no one wants to buy them until they're discountied 90%.
@@MRFUCKOFF202 It's a protection financially if you can claim it against a business or use a company novated lease system - yes, private leasing without any kind of tax break is probably not a great idea.
It's good news they made a competitive car and I hope it'll bring them success. Personally, I'd never be interested in an SUV, as it leaves me totally cold from a design point of view. But if this could be Maserati's Cayenne, it would mean they can produce more memorable shapes and that's always good news.
Sorry to be the one to say it, but that is not a pretty car. Most Maserati were. Not this one.
Most SUV's aren't pretty
A Maserati SUV. Where have we gone wrong?
what's wrong with that lol times change
This is entirely the fault of the Governments you have elected, these crossovers only exist due to emissions regulations.
Marketing way it's wrong
@@connormatthews522 very bad changes....
You also have Ferrari SUV, now that's bad. Lmao
That car is hideous! looks like a modern Ford Puma with a Maserati badge stuck on it!
£84000 for a 4 cylinder which looks like a giant Ford Puma??
Great content as always - but do my eyes deceive me...!!?? On the clock close-up (10:09), the second hand appears to move backward.... didn't see time travel on the options list...!! 😄
Pretty much all of the e supercharger systems are only for low end response / transient torque fill. The ones I've seen in detail are only capable of running for short periods (20-30 sec max) as the energy involved is actually quite high therefore heat & energy storage become a problem quickly. The braap sounded very VAG to me. I'm guessing they've used some of the usual industry consultants / service providers to do the setup & tuning.
Maserati or not. It's just got that bland anonymous SUV shape. From the back especially it could be a Renault, a Kia, a Hyundai, etc. You have to look for the badges these days.
Another fun review Harry. Well Done! I'd have the F-Pace SVR...........Wait a minute I have one after seeing your review of that!
It's one of the most complete SUVs available at the moment. I'd have this over any of its rivals.
bravo
A fool and his money, etc.
Agree, finally an intelligent comment on this video.
£80k for something that looks like a Ford Puma…
Not to forget that it will depreciate like a piano falling off a cliff.
The piano would make a better noise too.
Just get a Macan. Not sure why we need a four-cylinder Maserati mini SUV. The market is crowded, and this seems like a me-too car with a nice badge.
Am I going mad or is the second hand on the clock going backwards?
Also if you parked a standard SUV form any of the other big manufacturers, Jaguar, Ford, Kia, Lexus, Nissan nose to tail in a line you would struggle to pick this out. Bit run of the mill if you ask me.
So basically it beats the crap out the competition from Porsche, BMW, Audi and even its bigger brother.
Why would anyone buy a Macan or Cayenne, QWhatever when this is on offer?
Good work from Maserati - they’re getting their act together
This is like a posh Stelvio Veloce with Alfa Tonale hybrid bits and a more luxurious interior. Stelvio Veloce is much cheaper and has dials for most functions and paddles for auto and manual modes. Plus it looks too much like a Porsche for my liking. I’m v happy with my Stelvio Veloce. For 90k the Alfa Stelvio QV V6 would be a better buy.
£84k for a 4 cylinder SUV which looks like a cross between a Ford Puma & a Mercedes GLC and will suffer horrific depreciation. Not for me, although the interior is well executed.
Grecale, sounds like 'Grockle'. Looks like a Kia, sounds like a Golf. It's just another car-by-numbers Stellantis shitbox. I'll pass.
looks like a bloody Ford Puma.
How would you like your pricey Swiss watch to only look mechanical, but to be electronic in all areas that matter? Electric dash, electric steering, -- the human interface is completely filtered, instead of being direct. This is a phoney car that is just an excercise in status creation, like most SUVs are.
I don’t get this. A ridiculously expensive not so well performing ugly duckling. Certainly not so practical too. Already looks totally dated. I’ll stick with an electric. No wroom but in each and every other way it’s waaaaaaaay better.
in the US, Maserati's depreciate in value faster than they accelerate. So I'd be interested in whether this one does any better in holding its value.
I can pinpoint exactly why you would not put your own hard earned money into this car
Depreciation '
Maserati are a special car in a niche market .
Not up against main stream competiton
If i was Maserati id register a 1000 of these and put it on lease payments .
Couple that eith suspect service costs and parts prices
This car is lost in the fiat. Umbrella
Get back to core values and make supercars , sad to see such a great company put mediocre cars beneath there cor values to temp the masses .
Sorry a failure in my book
And Harrys summary was the answer
Not my money .
Nice try though
It could be a citreon in the depreciatoon stakes
Once owned a 430 saloon , at the same time as 190e cosworth
The 430 great car and a hoot to drive
The the cosworth Merc wiped the floor with it .
Not much has changed in 30 years
Gawd I hate that Audi/VAG ‘thrup’ on the gear changes. It’s a yappy-dog noise that shouts aggression from something that’s usually pretty small and unthreatening. Not keen at all on the massive interior display either - especially with all the buttons moved to the stalks and wheel.
I was just thinking that Maserati clock looks loads better than the old mechanical one, and then I see it's running backwards??
😂😂😂 I saw that too. I think it's something with the camera and it being so close. On the zoomed-out shit it's running "normally" lol.
1. In my opinion, it is ugly. But that's a thing with this kind of car.
2. The farting on upshift sounds absolute stupid.
Good review, as always - but the car is not my cup of tea.
I see abit of Ford Puma, Aston, Merc and Porsche.....its all abit meh....interior is defo no better than the BMW/Mercs imo....MPG is a joke 🤔😂
i bet it's great , BUT for a peasant like me it looks a bit like something peugeot threw out ,,,, and buying second hand - imagine taking that around the corner for your local blacksmith to fix ;;;;; when the nearest mas dealer is on another continent ;; ha , ha ..
Scarily, I don't think I have ever seen you pay more attention to the controls/displays compared with any other vehicle you have tested. Eyes should be for the road as you know. Some people would be crashing that very quickly after purchases I suspect.....
SUVs made by sports car manufacturers make me sad. I don’t blame the companies for conforming to the market, but I feel nothing for or about them. The only exception is the Lambo Urus, which does look and sound like a Lambo. Why are people so obsessed with SUVs though? Bring back fast estates I say! They can actually go round a bend at speed, hold all your luggage whilst looking better doing it!
Harry at the 10:10 timestamp you can see the clocks second hand was going backwards. Very strange.
Four wheeled smart phone... I'd sooner drive a wheelbarrow. Sorry, but there is nothing at all I like about this and Maserati's do it for me.
The issue is the exterior styling. It’s just not quite styled enough. Like they were on the way to something interesting, but someone said no overtime and they had to go with what they had. The rear needs something. It needs to be a little more sloped. The taillight treatment is huge issue. It looks like every other SUV out there. The taillights are just stone cold boring.
Seems a little german to me. Works well, but its just another big ugly SUV with a four cylinder motor...
Rubbish, no really, it's trash.
Sorry, I think the screen is ugly. Kills the whole vibe. We made a big mistake in giving software nerds a hand in car design.
Like it's style as a rule. Way too many screens which are properly distracting. Why do you need a screen image of the car you're driving or bings and bongs and flashing images telling you what the battery is doing and where the power is being sent to. Madness. Proper buttons are intuative and non distracting. You can use those things without taking your eyes off the road.
❤🔱 Panerai is excellent match with Maserati.
This one is not gonna survive through the warranty period with all that shit in the engine bay
That front looks like it’s going to age really badly. It might be a Maserati thing but it already looks 20 years old
I guess what Harry is thinking is somewhere along the lines of "i kinda like this car but OMG is 84k a lot for a car that will be sold for half in a couple years".
shame on them for what they did do that brand
Not another bloody SUV… Grey over black as well. 👎🏻 Great video nonetheless.
That's quite awful. It's as much a Maserati as I am, just another generic SUV.
As is unfortunately typical of Maserati (and Alfa), it's way overpriced.
it's an overpriced mom-mobile. The interior and sporty styling is all they need to sell to posh city mom's
The price of new cars is absolutely ridiculous these days. So many touching £100k is beyond me
Rav4 prime in top trim is over 70k euros in my country. Rav4! I honestly am not sure if it's just me, I earn good, consider myself mid class but spending over 50k euros for a daily that's absolutely mainstream is out of my mind.
@@JohnyMcNeal I couldn’t agree more with you. The prices have risen over 50% it seems in just a few years which was not obvious if you were taking cheap finance but now interest rates are higher there are no cheap deals to hide these high car prices. Where will it end?
Peak idiocy - gear change buttons on the screen. I hope all goes back to normality after that.
Maserati continue to be below average like they always have been after Citroen's ownership.
Looks are subjective, but I think it's just as ugly as every other SUV.
Grey SUVs all look to same, its just a crap shape to introduce difference.
SORRY....turned off the minute everything was through the screen....
A Rebadged 2022 Ford Puma
Am i missing something, why is the clock going backwards?.
glitch in the matrix
A two ton blob. Yawn…what is the perverse appeal of SU bloody V’s?
Stellantis/FCA's 2.0L four cylinder seems to be a pretty solid unit! From what I understand, a Giulia Ti Sport is a sweet spot for that car, thanks to the lighter front end from that smaller engine. I've driven a few Jeep models with it, and it's a perfectly fine unit. That Giorgio platform underpins the Giulia, Stelvio, Grecale, Gran Turismo (M189), and Grand Cherokee WL. Lovely platform.
Stellantis just makes me shudder - they are an horrific corp, most noted for bad customer service, poor Q.C. and over-charging for panels & spare parts to the point where near new cars are often written off due to minor accident damage.
@@Beer_Dad1975 Sir, that can be said for a lot of car companies. Tesla, Range Rover, Mercedes. Take your pick.
Found the Stellantis engineer
Yeah but it turned out to be seriously unreliable in the Giulia..
@@Kylirr He did say the truth, though. I mean, can you dispute it?
Agree with your comments. £84k is expensive and must have most options ticked! I have a Modena Prima Series with most options included and cost less than this. Love the interior. The space etc. is better inside than a Macan. Coming from a heavier car, the handling is a revelation. But miss 6 cylinder. It is quick, fast enough for U.K. roads.
Did anyone else think this was a Ford Puma from the thumbnail?
Did you notice the clock second hand is going anti-clockwise? (See at 10:10 in the video)
How boring these modern cars are..... it's beyond belief! Garbage bins!
I’m not sold on the shape. I think the Porsche cayenne edges it for me.
sounds like a honda
Take the badges off it and it could be a ford/ Nissan/ Toyota 😳 84k😂
A nice video. Grecale GT and Grecale Modena are cheap compared to the Macan and Macan T. However, the Macan S with its V6 engine of 380 HP is a bargain compared to the Grecale Modena (German prices).
Do not wish to bash this car too much. It's pretty good for what it is and will hopefully create a cash cow for our beloved brand to then build the pure Maseratis we lust after.
Enjoyed that Harry thanks. Do you have any plans to test the Audi RS6 performance, interested in what your thoughts would be.
Thanks Harry - best part of Sundays - the problem I have with these screen dashboards is they will look so old hat in 10 years - Dials & clocks never date - well they might date , but they add charm!
Nice car except for the backwards running clock
Had mine for 6 months and only issues so far have been with the alarm and some glitches on the screens. Car is a joy to drive on motorways and not too big to impractical round town. I had the Trofeo version for a week and its another level. Fantastic car with the V6 form the MC20 but a little much for daily use.
A Maserati with chassis engineering by Peugeot?
They did the grille design too..
Sounds good, quite like a Golf R with the DSG farts. I've seen them at my local dealers and was put off by the 2.0L "hybrid" engine.
A very fair assessment. I have the Trofeo and it’s a fantastic fun car to drive 👌
The front of Grecale looks like a child of Ford Puma and Porsche Macan.
