I had a similar problem with the mode control dial on my kitchen’s Neff oven. My wife wanted a service engineer out immediately. I told her to hold on while ‘professor’ Williams sorted to out. Which I did while hiding the process from her with my body. Within 15 seconds it was back working like new and I was a hero. Knowledge is power!
Thanks! I tried different approaches used on HP Palmtop Computers and Calculators - since this issue is quite frequent with these items too. However, that is push buttons and not like what is on the FZ300. So, I was about to see how to take these buttons off and clean them. Then I found your video and doing what you recommended worked out. No more sluggishness! It was quite annoying when you had that great shot and, not working or too slow. The bird had flown. SO, thanks for the very pleasant video! Your tricks worked.
Hi Graham, I have had the zoom lever problem on my ZX300 for over a year and used the side zoom. After reading your latest newsletter and now this video I tried the zoom lever procedure without the power for about 5 minutes and then turned on the power and it worked. Thank you very much. I was expecting on taking the camera in for service but you saved me about $200US.
Wow! I cannot believe this worked, but it worked for me as well, on my Panasonic Lumix FZ1000M2. Exactly the same kind of rocker knob for zoom/telephoto and working it for 2 minutes cleared the problem. Thank you much!!😁
Without you, I would have given up on this niche camera long ago, but you have single-handedly and very generously taught me both how to use it and maintain it - thank you so much Graham. We appreciate this contribution to the world!
Thank you very much Graham I had given up on the lever zoom and used the barrel zoom solely as lever zoom would not respond faithfully circa 30-45 seconds has me up and going as if new 🙂 well done and yet again thank you very much great respect
Hello Graham, although not related to this particular video, but having only just purchased an FZ330, I am finding your series of videos on this camera invaluable. Coming back to serious photography after around a 20 year lay off, this camera is much more technical than what I was used to but thanks to your videos I am understanding it a lot quicker than I would do otherwise, your videos are extremely helpful and well presented. Many thanks and keep up the good work.
Thanks Graham I have the same problem on my FZ300 I will give it a try , thank you Graham for all the beautiful detailed information that you have given on the Panasonic bridge cameras. ✨🙏
For what it's worth, I also have an old FZ200 with a similar problem, very seldom use it anymore, but thought as it worked on the FZ300 I'd give it a try just to prove the point. Magic, zoom now working fine.
Hi Graham, I love your videos (especially the ones around Horwich because we used to live there!). I got a well-used FZ330 yesterday. All seemed well but this morning I noticed the zoom lever would only operate between 27 & 81 mm. I did the lever wiggling for a few minutes but nothing changed. Then I noticed the camera was in video mode (which is primarily what I use it for for my YT cooking videos). I switched it to P and bingo! Full range 25-600. Are you aware of this 'limitation' and do you know why it exists?
Hello Sir! I have Canon 90d. Its almost new. I make RUclips Makeup Tutorials. One day my camera Mode Dial started doing problem. I select Manual Mode from the Dial but it shows A+ Mode in Video Mode. In photograghy it stays on P Mode or A+ Mode. I have tried lots of procedures, firmware update, camera reset, cleaning the Dial with brush with WD-40. But no result. I am unable to work Manually on my camera. Please help
Need you Graham. My FZ300 has a screen issue, it's upside down until i flip and lock in place, then ok. The other day i was panning left but the screen panned right, changed the battery all good . I know this is serious, i want to get ahead of it before a major issue
I have a Panasonic DMC-LF1, which I haven't used in aged and was going to sell. Discovered, unfortunately that the zoom lever wasn't working and in researching online found this video. Tried your method and it works brilliantly. Thank you so much fo posting this
Thank you Graham, I have a TZ40 and havent used it for 5 years as the zoom leaver stopped working but thanks to you it now works I had tried moving the leaver before like you suggested but only a short time This time I moved it for 2 minutes at a time several times over the evening IT WORKED CANT THANK YOU ENOUGH XX
Thank you! This also worked for the zoom lever on my Lumix dmc tz70! It was working in telemode, but not in retrieving the lens. Amazingly simple 😀 (i also found as option to clean this part of the camera inside)
I have an intermittent on/off switch on a Panasonic FZ300. Do you think removing the battery and working the on/off switch back and forth for 2 minutes or so might resolve the issue? Thanks, Mark
Hi Graham, i also have had this problem intermittently, one problem i have had involving the zoom lever on top of the camera is the being really stiff, it sometimes takes great force to make it move, it tends to happen in hot climates, i found a way round this was by using a silicone spray using a flossing tool for your teeth, spray it on the flosser and run it around the lever, this has worked a treat in the past, anynoe else had this problem
Thanks it works. I have a panasonic dmc tz18 which was laying around for a year and the zoom lever was first not working then erronously. Then i found your RUclips post and juggled the lever for a minute or two and the zoom is working again. Thank you very much. I also have a sony nex 6 which gives a shutter error. Hammer it on a flat surface helps for 10 images and have to switch it off. That is annoying. Any suggestions?
I have the FZ300 but I feel betrayed by Panasonic. They clearly target buyers who look for a robust camera, because they market the camera as weather sealed / dust proof and also they have designed it with a bulky, solid look. But then they incorporate a lot of very carefully designed obsolescence. This issue with the zoom lever is not as severe as the treacherous design of the power lever, made to fall apart with normal usage. The camera is full of normal buttons EXCEPT for the power lever who is very carefully designed not to last. Next time I will stick to Sony, as I should have done in the first place.
Thank you very much for this Video. It worked for my LUMIX fz10002 as well. I recently had same erratic behavior of Zoom and in View Mode it zoomed in or out or nothing happened at all. Now it works fine again. Thanks a lot.
Hello Graham, Greetings from Canada, I am relatively new to your channel, and could not be happier to have found you, I recently purchased a FZ300 from Amazon, I went through the Panasonic Manual to get the basics to start operating my camera, I inserted an old micro SD card with the adapter I had, the card is a SanDisk 4GB HC, I took still pictures and one video, shortly after I ran out of space for any further video recordings, so I ordered new SD cards from Amazon at 64GB XC U3 and 128GB (I could not find any HC as the old one I used successfully) I formatted the new cards in the camera, unfortunately when recording a video I get " write error please check the card", I tried to look for a solution or advise on RUclips, this is when I found your tutorial focused on the FZ300/330, I watched your Pilot Episode following your process, but unfortunately I still have the same write issues with videos, I have to mention I have no writing issues when taking still pictures just with videos, I would appreciate your thoughts, is it a set-up issue and a malfunction with the camera, thank you in advance and best regards
I had started using the less convenient button on the left side of the camera to control the zoom, but the lever wiping method seems to have fixed the problem. Thank you!
Hi Graham, thank you very much for this easy fix for my zooming problem on fz300 . I was hoping to buy a new camera as repair costs are so high. Thanks again for saving me lot of money and wish you all the best for your excellent work .
I have a point and shoot zs40 and had similar zoom lever problem…and, it seems to have helped it to work again! Thx! Of course, I have pretty much worn out this little work horse of a camera! And, have replaced her with a zs80…but like to use the zs40 as a backup when out and about…as I use their little sister the zs8! I also have G-1 and a G-5…so totally a Lumix gal! I enjoy watching your videos as I find hints for my cameras even though they aren’t same model. I love the quality of all my photos using Panasonic! Thx for sharing your expertise!
Thanks Graham for all you do. I did the wiping procedure as a preventative maintenance action. I’m really appreciative that you still talk about the Pano 300. 👏
Thank you SO much. I had an intermittent fault on the zoom. 2 minutes... fixed. I thought I would either gave to put up with it or buy a new camera! Are you some kind of genius? 😊
Hello Graham. Thank you so much for your tutorials. I have an FZ1000 with the mode dial problem. Your tip got rid of the error message but the mode dial isn't giving me the settings it should be - eg iA is showing on screen as P. Do you have any suggestions?
Thank you very much. I have a Lumix DC-ZS70 and the zoom lever has been very sticky, not responding a smoothly as it once did. I followed your cleaning advice, and it seems to have helped. My camera is getting old and has taken many thousands of photos ... but now I think it has a few more thousand in its future!
I have a Panasonic Lumix TZ80 and it has the same problem; your suggestion has improved it - I'll keep working on it. I previously had a TZ40 and it also had the same problem. Seems like Panasonic needs to make some basic changes. At least with the compact travel zoom cameras you can control the zoom on the touch screen, so if it annoys me enough I can operate the zoom from there. (This also enables me to confirm that I don't have a problem with the zoom drive mechanism.) However, it's not as convenient as the zoom lever, and you cant use it with the electronic view finder. Thanks for your post.
I have a problem with my fz330 , I set all the options correctly (hdr off, idynamic , jpeg ………) but I still can activate izoom and digital zoom at same time to reach 2400! What should I do?
I have a different error. Both zoom dials don't work after I've taken a photo. I have to change AF mode from AF-S to AF-C or MF, after that it works until I've done another picture. Very weird behaviour. Anyone noticed that?

Hi Graham, the zoom lever works is i auto mode but not in the other modes - at least not to the full potential. Do you have a fix for this problem? The Lumix is pretty new, bought it in September, Elke
Great video - may thanks The problem did not get fixed by just moving the switch so I took a risk and sprayed cleaning alcohol on the outside of the siwtch - I then moved the switch again - left the alcohol to evaporate and it now works fine..
Hi, Thank you for you video help. I had a problem with the mode dial on my old Lumix G2 but only the settings P, A, S and M. When selecting one of these mode it would switch to a different mode, most of the time it would choose M. I did a search on the internet and for this problem but only found a solution to the error message "Mode Dial in wrong position". I followed one of the links to your video and tried your solution on the mode dial and low and behold it seems to have sorted it. I suspect that the problem may come back in time but if that happens I will try this fix again.
Graham - Thanks so much for this. So far my FZ300 is little enough used or new enough to have not had any problems but some years from now it may pop up. Steve
Does anyone know about a problem with the rear dial (the dial to the right on top of the camera)? My rear dial is not working. I can't find any information about it anywhere.
I noticed the problem last year but mine seems to be slightly different. If I try to use the fast zoom it will invariably stick but if I start gently by zooming slowly, there is no problem and I can speed up and slow down at will.
Thank you so much Graham been using the zoom on the barrel of my FZ300 for a long while. Took several attempts but I confirm your solution worked for me. To be honest if it hadn't I would have stayed with the barrel zoom and not spent that sort of money to fix it. Thanks again for being there and all your wonderfully instructive and helpful videos.
@@GrahamHoughton12 unfortunately yes Graham. It is my husband's camera and he hadn't used it for a few months. He took it out a month or so ago and found the zoom level was sticking. I will get him to try your tip to see if it works. I have the previous FZ1000 model and mine is ok so I think it might be due to lack of use in the case of the FZ1000ii
Brilliant, thank you so much. Had this problem for a couple of years and still not used to using barrel switch especially after having an FZ45 before this model.
Thank you! I am having a zoom lever issue with my FZ1000. I used the technique you described and that lever is almost working like it should, which is a tremendous improvement! I think I just need to rock that lever back a forth for a few minutes more.
Dear Graham, thank you so much for your tip. It has substantially improved the handling of my FZ300 (I may still have to repeat it for more two minutes). My FZ2000 is still perfect; fortunately, the G100, the Gh5, and the GH5s don't have the zoom lever. Thank you so much for your videos! A big hug from Portugal
Thanks Graham. Your fix worked for the mode dial issue on my FZ300. 👍👍 I took the liberty of posting a link to your video on the Panasonic P&S forum at DPReview. All the best in 2022 and thanks for all you do for the FZ community.
Another very satisfied viewer here! I had a non-functioning zoom-out on the top control (the barrel control was fine) of a newly-acquired second-hand FZ-330 and I was about to do battle with the camera firm who sold this to me - and they on the other side of the country. A few minutes of wiggling as you recommend- and it now works fine. So I can now get back to your excellent FZ-330 manual to keep learning. As with others, you've certainly saved me a lot of hassle, and possibly a lot of money too.
Wow, thanks Graham. I was about to forward this to my partner for help as the first part went way over my head, but then I scrolled through the comments and realised the fix was much simpler than the reason behind the problem. My camera is now over 7 years and suffers from both these issues, but intermittently, so I'm not sure if the fixes have worked, although when I switched on the second time (got the mode dial error message the first time so repeated the process) the zoom operation certainly felt smoother. Anyway, fingers crossed. I love this camera, although yesterday I found my ancient Praktika, which was my introduction to photography, in a box while I was looking for something else and it made me realise how much I'd loved using it.
I had the zoom lever and mode dial problems for almost two years. The zoom lever was just awful, so much so that I put the camera in the closet and used my phone. But then I came across this video; and now both problems have been solved simply! AMAZING! Thank you so much, Graham! Great contribution! So sad that Panasonic wouldn't/couldn't do this.
I was in the process of trying to disassemble my Lumix TZ81 when I found this video. Tried it and now the zoom dial works fine again, saved me a ton of headache. So it appears to work for a bunch of different models, maybe for other brands as well. It may not work forever, but for now, I can use the camera again, thanks a lot.
Had the zoom lever problem for quite a while, progressively getting worse. Just Googled the problem, watched your video, followed the procedure for two minutes and it’s working fine again. Brilliant!
I did the on/off trick for about two minutes and it has solved the problem -- for now. If it happens again I will repeat the procedure. Thank you for the video explanation.
Thank you so much! Just had the intermittent/non responsive zoom lever problem on my Leica Vlux 5 so tried your solution and it worked after the first 2 minutes of clearing. Fascinating to learn how the lever actually works too. 👍
Many thanks Graham, that mode dial tip worked a charm on my 12 year old FZ38! It's battered and bruised but still going strong after 95,000 pics. Cheers, Jim
Hi Graham, I must admit the first few minutes of the video had me panicking that this was going to be beyond me but the actual solution was so simple and I'm happy to say successful. My son switch has been acting up for several months and I was dreading taking it in for repair not having a clue what it would cost. Thanks to you all is back to full working order and it hasn't cost a penny. Many thanks for your video and also the fz300 book which has been very useful over the years.
Thank you so much for this video Graham. I've just got home after a great day at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. My FZ330 decided to exhibit this fault so I had a frustrating day trying to get some good photos. (Unfortunately I wasn't aware of the side zoom control, but I am now). Just used your method of cleaning the potentiometer and luckily it seems to have worked. Many thanks.
Thanks. Very useful information. I had the problem with my FZ1000II and it is now solved. By the way, I bought your camera guide for this model.
Well done, knowledge is power!

I find all your videos very informative. I have purchased a FZ300 and FZ1000M2 because of your great videos -- Thank you very much.
William
Thansk that helped, that was a simple, but very needed fix, was starting to get frustrated :-)
Great video. We've been having trouble with both the zoom and the mode dial. He shows how to fix both, and now both problems are solved.
Bought mine used and had the zoom problem from the beginning. I suspect that is why I got a good deal. Your method fixed it for me.Thank you!
Well done on getting the bargain and the fix
That was exactly my case too. So glad I found this video :)
Without you, I would have given up on this niche camera long ago, but you have single-handedly and very generously taught me both how to use it and maintain it - thank you so much Graham. We appreciate this contribution to the world!
Thank you very much Graham
I had given up on the lever zoom and used the barrel zoom solely as lever zoom would not respond faithfully
circa 30-45 seconds has me up and going as if new 🙂
well done and yet again thank you very much
great respect
Thank you for the response - good to know that a few more people are getting a positive result
Hello Graham, although not related to this particular video, but having only just purchased an FZ330, I am finding your series of videos on this camera invaluable. Glad you like them! Thanks for your comment
Spot on Graham, just done it & zoom now working fine. Fixes don't come much simpler than that.
Thanks Gordon, glad it worked for you too.
Thanks Graham I have the same problem on my FZ300 I will give it a try , thank you Graham for all the beautiful detailed information that you have given on the Panasonic bridge cameras. ✨🙏
My pleasure!
cheers Graham not had the problem yet but if i do thanks for the info.
Good to hear, bear in mind when it does appear.
For what it's worth, I also have an old FZ200 with a similar problem, very seldom use it anymore, but thought as it worked on the FZ300 I'd give it a try just to prove the point. Magic, zoom now working fine.
Same with my fz200. Thanks
great news, thanks for the response.
Thanks! I have those problems

OK, I'm an idiot. I had the camera set on macro zoom. Turned that off and it worked. 😀

Thank you Graham, I have a TZ40 and havent used it for 5 years as the zoom leaver stopped working but thanks to you it now works
I had tried moving the leaver before like you suggested but only a short time

Yes is suspect that there must have been some adhesion between the lever and camera top plate which was removed wit the polish
I would need to have a MS in engineering to understand most of this, but the suggestion for the fix is simple enough.
Thank you so much for your help!

Good! I fixed it with your help. the zoom lever, I mean. Now it works properly. Thank you. Like and suscribed.
Thanks Graham.
Works well now ( fz 300 ).
Great advice as usual.
I had both problems with mij fz300 but they are simply solved now! Thank you Graham, it saves me a lot of money.
Thank you very much for this Video. It worked for my LUMIX fz10002 as well. I recently had same erratic behavior of Zoom and in View Mode it zoomed in or out or nothing happened at all. Now it works fine again. Thanks a lot.

Hi Graham Thanks for the advice Has solved the problem on my FZ200 Much appreciated Rose
This worked for my Lumix ZS-40! I hope it holds up because my like my little portable friend.

Thanks for your post.

it worked - thank you very much- i was nearly going to bin the camera
Great video, thanks so much! I bought a "defective" FZ45 with the mode dial issue for 20 Euros. 😊
Thank you very much! This helped on my Panasonic tz61 as well!
Hi, yes I had a problem with the zoom lever but this seems ti have fixed it, thank you so much!!!!!!
Great video - may thanks
The problem did not get fixed by just moving the switch so I took a risk and sprayed cleaning alcohol on the outside of the siwtch - I then moved the switch again - left the alcohol to evaporate and it now works fine..
Great, this fixed the issue!!! Thanks a lot, really much appreciate.
Thank you very much, this fixed the zoom lever problem of my FZ300!
YES I have those exact 2 problems (and completely forgot that the front zoom lever had two speeds, it does work at the lower speed 🤯)
Graham - Thanks so much for this. So far my FZ300 is little enough used or new enough to have not had any problems but some years from now it may pop up. Steve
Brilliant...problem fixed...thank you!!
Does anyone know about a problem with the rear dial (the dial to the right on top of the camera)? My rear dial is not working. I can't find any information about it anywhere.
what is a better camera the fz82 or fz300 because I would like to take birds of about 6 m which camera would you advise
Had the mode dial problem on my FZ300 - this fixed it - Many thanks!
Thank you, Graham. I was just about to take my camera to the shop. Problem solved!
Thank you, perseverance paid off in the end. Thanks for your response to this video
worked with the lx100. Thanks.
Thankyou Graham, your tip did the trick ! Much appreciated.
My zoom didn’t move after 30 sek of movement it works very nice, thanks a lot
Just tried your method and it fixed my zoom. Thanks for the tip
Will this work on the FZ1000 ii
I've not seen the schematics of this newer camera but i suspect it is similar operation - is this happening so soon on this model?
@@GrahamHoughton12 unfortunately yes Graham. It is my husband's camera and he hadn't used it for a few months. He took it out a month or so ago and found the zoom level was sticking. I will get him to try your tip to see if it works. I have the previous FZ1000 model and mine is ok so I think it might be due to lack of use in the case of the FZ1000ii
Zoom fixed on FZ1000 2. Many thanks.
Thank you for your help, this fixes my camera 😊
2 fz300 with thé prob, 1st one looks ok now, now see for how long 😅
Worked for the zoom lever. Cheers and many thanks!
It totally worked great!!! Thank you
Brilliant, thank you so much. Had this problem for a couple of years and still not used to using barrel switch especially after having an FZ45 before this model.
Hope it worked for you.
Thank you! I am having a zoom lever issue with my FZ1000. I used the technique you described and that lever is almost working like it should, which is a tremendous improvement! I think I just need to rock that lever back a forth for a few minutes more.
Glad it helped! It looks like it must be a similar system on the Fz1000
Worked a treat! Thank you.
It worked!! Thank you so much!!
Worked for me, thanks.
two thumbs up. now working
Worked on my ZS50 too.
Thanks Graham, this worked for my DMC-ZS60 I love the camera but was becoming very frustrated with the faulty zoom operation
Thank you so much Graham, tried this on the zoom lever of my wife's TZ 80. And it is working fine now. Genius!!!
My old DMC-TZ40 couldn't zoom in anymore, only the zoom-out worked. I found your video and this method actually fixed the issue. Thanks!
Avometer !!!! FANTASTIC !!!
Thanks! I was ready to buy a new camera before I watched your video and solved my zoom lever problem. Simple and elegant solution to a common problem.
The zoom lever trick quite simple and really worked for me! My dying zoom has reborn! Many thanks for your helpful video!
