This is one of the few things I love unabashedly about the internet. People painstakingly keeping random stuff from over a decade ago in my memory alive.
I just wanted to say thank you to Myron for redoing this excellent series. The graphical update really does make a difference. If we can ever track down the enigmatic GooseGoose, I'd want shake his hand. I was caught up in his analyses because I felt his enthusiasm for the HL story matched my own. He even gave me a few things to think about. GooseGoose, if you're out there, thanks for the videos. They are insightful and, despite the length, engaging. They still remain one of the most well-done retrospectives for the series, and given when they came out, that's saying something. Thanks again to Myron for the no-doubt painstaking work to redo these VERY lengthy videos. Keep it alive.
Whenever I write essays for school I always write them in his voice. This was one of the first piece of critical essay work that I ever found interesting, and thus I always imagine his voice in my head whenever I am writing.
I'm new to Goose Goose's work. Truly amazing essays on this incredible game. Pity he's disappeared from the Internet, I hope he's doing well out there. Thanks for these wonderful videos.
Im a Huge Fan of GooseGoose.. I love to rewatch these from time to time again..i hope he comes back..when ever the hell HL3 happens...from a fan just south of you from Portland

I watched his commentary in 2008, i think it was on google video, this is by far the most eloquent, intimate, yet down to earth commentary i have ever seen.. also showing how great of a game it is to allow for such a good commentary.. I would love to hear from GooseGoose again, call him up! i'll pay him, seriously, i have money aha. thanks for the uploads! :)
I really love rewatching these from time to time so thanks a bunch for remastering these! Can't imagine the amount of work that must've gone into this.
If it's any consolation I have been looking into making a video series on Morrowind in a similar style to GooseGoose. MrBtounge (the guy who does those cool TUN videos) is also thinking about doing a Mass Effect series inspired by GG's style, which would be awesome. Part of the reason I did these HD remasters was that i hoped it would inspire people to make videos in a similar format. I enjoy Let's Plays and everything but it would be nice to have a more precise and condensed alternative.
Blasted me back to early YT days when I first watched it. Thank you so much for keeping this archived. Wonderful art analysis of the game from a very personal perspective!
Man, I loved this guys series he gave me a new appreciation for the series and video games in general. One of the first long youtube series I ever watched and one I loved.
+Lt Sprinkulz You can never watch this commentary too much. If anything its not long enough! So many more interresting things it´d be lovely to hear his opinion on. This is just pure gold. A masterpiece. Nothing simply compares to how well done and perfect this. if only more half life fans knew about this so they could appreciate it. But kind of sad to think about where goosegoose is now. Who knows if he´s dead or alive. One can only hope the absolutely best for him and hope he´;s doing well and thats he´s happy. Hope one day he´ll return. Its so nostalgic to listen to this, afterall its about 9 years ago he made this...damm.
THANK YOU I thought I was the only one who would try to protect a rebel and keep them alive like you did with the female medic. The guy I would always pick is a guy who I called "John" (cause that's the first name that came to mind), and he was one of the guys you first meet in the plaza. I definitely developed an emotional attachment to a seemingly empty and unimportant figure.
+The Trolldier Sorry to say but GooseGoose has since disappeared from the Internet. I am not sure if he would be able to reply to this. But I would still love him to return one day.
29:40 This is what I love about your reviews mark. That same place in the canals always stuck out to me but it had no real significant purpose or emphasis in the story. You seem to notice the same things I did that none of my friends remembered. That kind of subtlety is what makes half life so great.
I enjoyed this style of reviewing. It's a bit drawn out, but it highlights the entire experience of playing the game; sort of like a Let's Play, but only cutting to the most significant moments and scenes. There were even a few elements in here that I had missed, despite playing through the game many, many times.
I think Lazio was a bright scientist at Black Mesa, and The guy who warns you about the sand was a security guard ( Judging by his weapon and how he talks of Lazio) that helped him escape Black Mesa. When he said he was doing something, I think he was going to bury him.
I watched this and the original commentary side by side in separate windows, muting the older one and periodically checking that the sounds were lined up. Very good job on this! I watched the whole thing! I really want to watch to watch Episode 1 RIGHT NOW though, so I'll do that, but I'll be sure to give you at least a view and a nice comment when you complete your Episode 1 remaster.
Jesus, you reshot this whole thing? That's quite excellent. Great job! I remember how crappy the old video looked. Hell, I had forgotten about these videos, entirely, until I stumbled across this.
Christ this guy is genuinely awesome, when I first discovered him i binged watched all of his half life commentaries, this does appear to be a reupload though so is there any whereabouts of goose goose?
My only complaint: you should have used Dog's ball instead of a roller mine in the "Barney clones playing football" sequence, since Dog's ball doesn't zap them, but still rolls towards them.
Thank you so very much! this is one of my favorite RUclips videos of all time! I really hope that you will go on to making your own, similar commentaries! R.I.P GooseGoose... :'(
+Noah v E (Noah6400) I protected absolutely everyone possible, I even reloaded like 20 times on the staircase just to make sure the shotgun soldiers didnt kill anyone
Never seen these videos before. I must have been starting my first year of high school when the original videos were made, which was years before I ever heard of or played Half Life 2. It's since become one of my favorite games. I find his analysis of the game very interesting and approach games in a similar way, always being fascinated by the small things and the seemingly less important details. For years now I've wondered what the original combine synths looked like before they were enslaved, what kind of worlds they came from, whether they were peaceful creatures and how they would behave in their natural environments. Same with the antlions. Whenever I play games I think way too deeply about everything lol
I just found another easteregg in Dr. Kleiner's lab he didn't mention. In his lab there is a crooked picture of all the scientists(scratch Dr. Breen) next to the board. If you straighten it, the eye scanner from the first game pops out from a pole next to it.
Im surprised you never mentioned the sterility imposed on the city or the empty playgrounds which hints at the idea that there are no more children, good commentary anyway
When you mention that you sang golden years by Bowie... *my reaction* looks like someone else has very good taste in music. Awesome video by the way, you really look at everything in a deep, detailed kind of way and it really highlights how much precision was put into the game. Especially in the environments.
I haven't finished them yet but i hope to have them both finished and uploaded in about 6-8 weeks max. It took me around 4 weeks to finish this one but the episodes are much shorter.
34:38. It's the head of an enemy called a Cremator. It was deleted from the game but you can still see traces of it throughout your journey. It was meant to clean up the corpses of the corpses of dead citizens via fire. You can find burned corpses in the canals that suggest that they may still be in the game even if you can't see them.
About the location, petrol pumps along the highway show KR as currency, which ought to imply Kronor (Swedish, Norwegian or Danish). The atmosphere and architecture in the game however is certainly more Eastern European than Nordic, so it could be reasonable to assume that the Nordic economies have usurped the Baltic ones. (Scandinavians being ever so diplomatic could perhaps make them the natural point for the aliens to establish embassies which later become base of operations)
41:08 I remember in the original commentary, there was on instance where the Barneys all synchronized their swings so that they all hit the roller mine at once.
I'm gonna get around to watching this whole commentary. But I just wanted to point out that meeting Barney may not be as entirely convenient as you suggest. After all, the G-Man seems to be able to move and observe outside the boundaries of time. Why wouldn't he put us on a train going to the station where Barney is working undercover? I personally think it would be awesome if Barney is UNDER undercover and is actually the G-Man's enemy. PLOT TWIST!
Excellent Vid ! Very Enjoyable! - Don't you always feel at the beginning of Half-Life 2 that the Train Journey should have started and gone on at length, showing the player a panorama of Totalitarian exigency _Before_ reaching the station of C-17 ? thanks for keeping these excellent reviews up
I cannot comprehend the fact that this guy is almost 50 years old now. I feel so weird watching this video knowing this lmao.
is he alive?

Yep tell me about it, I still open his Half Life commentary's as background chatter whenever i play something, It's too engaging

Yeah ended up watching it all once again the other day, his voice is so good wish the audio quality was sharper though
This is maybe the fourth-ish time I've watched this commentary. Two of them have been just this week alone.

I'd really love to hear GooseGoose's opinions on Half-Life: Alyx.
His name is Mark Zelmer
idk what he's up to now, but you can find some of his oil paintings in online portfolios
I thought it was Mark Gillespie

Fantastic job! This documentary was just unbelievable! I guess I'm going to the "Episode One" video now
Who else is coming back to watch these after the Half Life: Alyx trailer?
Thanks a ton for reuploading these. And mad props for re recording every thing, I can only imagine how much of a pain that must've been on your end

1:04:35 its funny Antlions can sense your vibrations when walking in the sand
but they cant sense you vibrating the rocks when you jump on them
I have to come back here every couple of months just to make sure that the video hasn't been taken down agan
I remember watching this guy's videos before youtube was a big thing. GOOGLE VIDEOS BABY!
first watched in 2008. Now rewatching in 2021. oh my word - the TIME . I feel like Gordon after a long suspended animation cliffhanger.
so does anyone know what happened to him?
epic! i remember these commentaries from back in the day on the old video.google site - gonna watch them again! 1080p fuck yeah.

I loved these commentaries. Good job on remastering this one.
Hey there's that video, I remember liking it but then it vanished. Good upload.
Never forget he's GammyGoose not GooseGoose!
The fact that half life 3 wasn't ever made proves we live in the darkest timeline.

Does anyone know where I could get the ambient sounds that play during the early part of this video, like around 5:30?
I just randomly came here to see if there was an update on EP 1 & 2. Thank you!
Every couple of years I got back to this masterpiece. For added nostalgia I read at pace Concerned: The Half-life and Death of Gordon Frohman.
nostalgic af!! thanks fo this insightful commentary
I started listening to this out of sheer boredom. 2 hours later I built a new appreciation for a game that I had almost forgotten about.
The gas mask thing inside the jar located in Eli's lab is the head of a Cremator, an enemy cut from HL2.
(1:38:40) Maybe 'Dog' somehow plugged into the Comms of the Transport craft he went flying off on in battle with, and found out where Alex was...
still can't believe the strider appears this early in this game
I wonder what happened to Gammygoose
Great catch Barney. Loads and loads of subtle innuendo throughout this game.
I really wish GooseGoose was still around. Hearing his thoughts on Black Mesa Source and how it compared to the original Half-Life would interesting.
Saying that violence against women is worse than violence against men is very sexist.
If the Combine Invasion of Earth brought us something good, it's that we now have two Combine Heavy Metal Bands known as "The Filth" and "Snowmen".
