  • Hello Citizens!
Today I want to talk about radar and scanning and how these systems need to develop in the future. Enjoy!

Star Citizen is currently in Alpha stage of development. This means not all features are impletented yet and there are a few bugs. However this does not make the game any less awesome. Find out more at robertsspaceindustries.com/ My referral code: STAR-LC9S-MFBH

I really hope CIG expand on the ship customization, we have basic componants now but I hope we get radar, hull plating, thrusters, fuel tanks etc.

Seeing that’s how they are diversifying some ships I doubt they will do anything like this

I don't know if it's still relevant, but there were Radars and Scanners as separate components, which is worth keeping in mind. Pretty much every ship has a Radar, and that has scanning functionality at the moment, but scanners like the Terrapin has are less common. I guess we'll see eventually whether that's distinctive or not.

I wonder what the plan is going to be for the Connie scan turret?

I think the range should be extended, I also think there should be alot more settings for the scanning. And if there is a scanning station on a ship, the person in that station should be able to way lay information to a pilot, highlighting areas/objects in Realtime. There should be a micro/macro scale on stations as well. So that you can scan a whole system, plannet, region, and get data, of what is where. Of Course then everything needs more information tied to everything. like pressure, organics, minerals, gasses, fluids, radiations and temperature. So that doing a macro scan, you get a overview of what exist in that scan. then you send that to a computer, that calculate the data, determining where the highest likelihood of those things you select are, then you have to search those areas for what you are looking for, either with scanning them, sending a probe there to record, or going there to investigate the area your self. The scanner/radar should determine the strength of a scan, while computers should determine the accuracy and speed the data is calculated. Of course that will probably not happen, if it does its at least another 5-10 years of development on top of everything else that they are doing.

Scan and ping are really bad since 3.23. Ping can pick up signatures like salvage panels, but then loses them until you're 5 meters away from them. Scanning a ship, asteroid etc doesn't even work a lot of the time. When it does work, it will sometimes show no cargo on the ship there is scanning even when there is cargo.
Remember when CIG said they were no longer releasing ships whose gameplay wasn't in the game yet? And then they released the Cutter Scout. Just goes to show you, don't believe a word they say, lol.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that asteroids actually do allow you to hide your ship by effectively blocking your cross section. At least it used to work a few patches ago. Haven't played in a while.

in privateer we had different choices of radar for the ships too

Scanning right now sucks, and I kinda like it. Allows me to do my stuff without coming across other players with nervous trigger finger. As long as the Halo is safe, I'm a happy panda. hehe

Safest place in Stanton right now :D
Though I remember a time when you would get random NPC spawns while in there, that's how I got my first and only Connie kill with a Prospector :D

*edit - catching up all of your video today and added the wrong comment on the wrong video.
For radars i really do not know how this gameplay will make sense. Does radar gameplay warrant having dedicated ships in your fleet? Couldn't it just be a component that you could add on? Also having a radar station in big ships would mean having a crew mate manning that. Its all very blurry for me at this stage.
A part of me even says that CIG made these radar ships just for sales. Question?

This topic does come up every once in a while. I think radar ships will have a purpose. Even if to provide a more powerful scanning platform. It should certainly be useful. Same applies to radar operator stations on larger ships. But I suppose that comes back to radar specializations.

While Radar performance and Stealth values are not where they need to be, you are incorrect about there being no stealth or that it does not work. You cannot detect a Saber at the same range as an Arrow, Gladius, or Cutter which are considerably smaller. Even if you were to focus only on the cross-section value, detection is still less than what the stated value is. A Saber with a CS value of 3880 can still be undetected to a range of approx 3500. It;s still not at the ideal performance, but it is better than it was on Alpha 3.22.X.

They should just cut that scanning crap and just add active and passive detection, I.E. radar and IRST, that allows for so many interesting combat decisions and even missile types, something SC really lacks.

@@porecemusnox8805 pushing a button is a gameplay loop? Nah. They can add a REAL gameplay loop, did you notice RL radar systems like AWACs and long range AA defenses like the Patriot or S400, S500, etc, requires multiple radars and radar technicians to operate?
Also, sonar and other sensors prospection requires a true geologist expert team to work?
Yeah, that's the gameplay loop. Not pressing tab once every 2 seconds.
