- If you don't like MX-5's, Eunos Roadsters / Miata this video won't be for you! We made the effort, in mixed weather, to attend the 35th anniversary meet since the MX-5 was launched. It was also 30 years since the MX-5 owners club (Uk) was launched. #classiccar #classiccars #classiccarshow #petrolheads #mazda @lightsuplightsdown3018 @PistonHeadsTV
Nice bunch of Mixxers. What makes me curious what happened if someone would have appeared with a Fiat 124 Spider which is the Type NF. At the rear end I am also often thinking it was just one of the design they also liked a lot and so they sold it to Fiat because it was too good to just throw it into the shredder. The Spider was also built at Mazda in Hiroshima. Only the engine stuff was from Fiat. Plus a few modifications compared to the Type ND like the winter rooftop and a thicker windshield for the European winters. At least I heard that. Anyway, back to the real Mixxers, hehe, I didn't expect that there's such a variety of the MX-5 when seeing these different modifications. And soooo many Miatas. I didn't expect something big like this. I was thinking perhabs 20-30 cars.
Cheers Sven - yes, a massive event. The Fiat 124 Spider, when it first came out, was a car I so wanted to like. Was a fan of the original. But for me it just didn't quite work - perhaps because of the Fiat engine choice. Anyway, I was impressed by the latest ND MX5 - though for me there will always only be one.....and it's got pop up headlights :)
@@OldCarsNewVan The classic MX-5 with the pop-up headlights is also really a great looking roadster.
The interior of the ND is the same as for the Fiat 124 Spider (NF). It was a nice car to drive. But the MultiAir unit is also very thirsty for oil. So you really had to check all 1800 miles for it. First I was believing it's a problem of the engine but I got told by the Fiat dealership that this is very common on them. So the ND is probably also the better decision because it doesn't have a turbo. The driving experience with the turbo of the Fiat shall be nicer as I heard. What I find interesting is the RF version of the MX-5 - it makes it look like a coupe. But I guess all the automatic stuff just to put the t-top down is just too much tech on it. The MX-5 was always about simplicity about the rooftop and with the RF they've done it too much - at least in my opinion. But stunning looking.
How's the technic on these old NA? Mazda was back then known for its great reliability. But I heard rust was becoming an issue since the 90s.
@@BFDdrives Morning Sven - yes, simplicity was always key to the MX5 so I think a non turbo engine and a manual roof is the way to go. So yes, the RF isn't for me either - too much tech and extra weight.
The NA is very reliable mechanically - but as you say you have to find a non rusty one or you'll be chasing body repairs forever. Maia's has never been welded and was coated in underbody protection the moment it was imported from Japan - so we're ok
