Late in '72, our ship- a destroyer- quietly and without fanfare slipped into San Diego after doing fire support and surface raids off the coast of Vietnam. We did our job, we were exhausted, and back then we were invisible to the uncaring America we came home to, except for one person: Walt Disney. He was gone from us, the boomer generation by that time, but his legacy was carried on by brother Roy, who had sent representatives to our ship with free passes to Disneyland for the whole crew. Being the "old man" of my buddies at 22, I rented a car for us and off we went, and thus fell under the spell of the Magic Kingdom; it meant everything to us and was the only welcome home we ever had, I've never forgotten the gesture or that day these 50 years later.

In 1962, when I was six years old my family went on a vacation to Disneyland in Anaheim CA. On the second day of our visit we went on a African boat ride. Just as the boat was about to leave the loading area, Walt Disney appeared wearing a safari outfit with pith helmet. He excused the boat's pilot and he proceeded to operate the boat. At one point he stopped the boat and because I was in the first seat he had me lean over the gunnel and yell the name of my home town. It echoed back and as I was still hanging over the edge of the boat, a mechanical hippopotamus quickly rose of of the water. Walt had me by the back of my shorts and he pulled me to safety. It was quite a hit with my family as we had watched Walt on the "Wonderful World of Disney" for several years so it seemed like we already knew him. It was a great childhood experience.

My mother worked at Disneyland when it first opened in 1955. She described "Uncle Walt" as being an understandably typical, silent, arrogant rich person. He was not particularly friendly with his employees and if they misbehaved or broke the rules he was ruthlessly hostile. To those who were diligent and upright he was far more friendly. When she was assigned to the Jungle Cruise she worked along side several teenagers who were rude to customers, were not keeping their uniforms clean and pressed and were lackadaisical with their work, not always there on time. Mr. Disney got wind of it, came to the Jungle Cruise one afternoon, dressed in Khakis, sunglasses and a pith helmet, lined them all up and chewed them out. He then went down the line, sticking a finger in the face of the offenders, one after another and declared, "You're fired, you're fired, you're fired, and . . ." he got to my mother and hesitated for a second, smiled and said "Not you Mrs. Trossen . . ." went to the next and said, ". . . and you're fired!" Uncle Walt was a more than exceptional artist, but he was also a good businessman. At a Christmas party in the Disney parking lot, when I was almost four years of age I (1957) had an encounter with Uncle Walt that I barely remember. My mom evidently had the opportunity to introduce us. At the time I hadn't any idea who he was, but later recognized some familiarity on his television program. He was warm, smiling and welcoming. I was then directed to a big box of Christmas gifts and was allowed to pick one. I did and when I opened it later it turned out to be a domino set. As for being racist, explain his close friendship with Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald. Louis Armstrong and his Dixieland Band was a prominent feature at Disneyland in the late '50's and early '60's. Louis, while in the area rented a theater in Garden Grove and/or Anaheim and the city councils blocked his advertisements, such that attendance to his performances were dismal. My mom, through Disneyland obtained tickets to an event and attended. She said that Louis stood on the stage and commented that there were not many people there, but added, "We're going to play for you anyway." My mom said that he played, and played and playyyyyyyyyed for several hours and that she loved every minute of it.

He was also very rich and moved in different circles of the population. People forget this much to their foolishness. I played with an Aboriginal boy from 2 houses down for many years he had polio and calipers. It worried us not at all unless he fell badly playing football. Johnny was also labled later in life as one of the stolen generation as his parents were white and he wasn't. It was not a concern to us.

"The Disneys were a wealthy family", but I have an impression that Uncle Walt didn't care. His home at 355 Carolwood was an oversized ranch house on a large lot (now torn down due to asbestos). Several Disney movies are negative toward lots of money; for example, Bert as a chimney sweep talking sadly about George Banks being alone, surrounded by cold, hard money. And the Disney company was infamous for its low pay.

Credible biographies do not show him as being the way you say to his employees - in fact, he had loyalty for the most part. He hired only the most talented people and many of his artists were foreign and black who dispelled any bad rumors about him years ago & today i.e. Floyd Norman.
He trusted them and they respected him. I remember when it was almost impossible to get a job there because everyone wanted to work in the animation studios and it was his brilliance that attracted them.

It sounds like he was a very good father, leaving his work behind at the office and devoting his time to his girls when he came home! And maybe to his wife also?! No one knows though totally what goes on behind closed doors… And whatever the daughters were willing to share also… He really contributed a lot to our American society, but also to other societies, as I think Walt Disney has reached out a lot further!?! He was very talented and imaginative and a hard worker, and probably a fair boss, so perhaps he had a hard time giving open or lavish praise to his employees, though he said it in bonuses it sounds like, etc. he probably did not get lavish praise himself when he was growing up it sounds like… so he is A-OK in my books!!! Thank you Mr. Walt Disney for all the joy you brought me and my brothers and sisters and other people!! I so adore the movie, the Beauty and the Beast!!! Started going to Disneyland when it was still in an orange grove. You could park at the gate and walk in. Saw Mr. Disney many times because he hung around the fire station, where his office was and in the nearby restaurants, and could not have been nicer to all of us local kids gathered around him, as well as tourists visiting. He always gave out autographs and posed for pictures. He loved watching families enjoying the park. Only the top students from high school were chosen to work there as seniors (I think they also had to be 18) and they all LOVED IT and adored Mr. Disney. Most of them went on to retire from Disney, as did their fathers before them, because it was known as one of the best jobs in SoCal back then. Unfortunately, today he would be horrified over what his creation has become - a moneygrubbing woke nightmare.

It's really sad that Disney is not in the hands of his family. I'm not sure why he didn't leave 100% to them.

...I get this, trying to make out he was some kind of evil, for what?...likes..., he was a good husband and father, and he sometimes could be testy in his later years, but he was sick already and in constant pain...but he loved children and wanted peace and love like all humans should, he was a must watch every Sunday, I vividly remember the first time I saw color TV for the first time, and and it was Walt Disney, I don't remember the episode, its a very happy memory from my childhood in the 60s....

Walt Disney wasn't anti-semit, racist, or sexist. These accusations came from a book that has been so discredited it shouldn't be referenced. However, the wonderful Meryl Streep thought she should run with fake facts and attack Walt a few years ago. Now everyone has decided to follow what a popular celebrity said instead of actually doing research. The truth of the matter is that Walt hired, and worked very closely, with Jews, such as the Sherman Brothers, African Americans, like Floyd Norman, and women, like Mary Blair. He was a wonderful man who was a workaholic, perfectionist, and smoker. History gets messed up when you take someone else's word for something.... Like Meryl Streep did. 😅

You rather glossed over Walt Disney's back story between WW-1 and 1927's contract with Universal for Mickey Mouse in California. Walt had a period in Kansas City, MO from 1920 that included the Iwerks-Disney Commercial Artists and Laugh-O-Gram Film Studios (LOGF). Before Mickey, Walt had created a character known as Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Walt was only 20 years old when he incorporated LOGF, which only lasted for a few years and ended with "Alice's Wonderland" in raw form. It wasn't until after the loss of copyright to the character of Oswald that "Steamboat Willie" introduced the public to Mickey (originally Mortimer) Mouse.

He meant well. What it turned into these later years would not please him, I am sure. But, who knows...

Really? When was Disney in the military? Oh, I'll make it simple for you. Never. So he wasn't discharged at all. Wikipedia: "In mid-1918, he attempted to join the United States Army to fight the Germans, but he was rejected as too young. After forging the date of birth on his birth certificate, he joined the Red Cross in September 1918 as an ambulance driver. He was shipped to France but arrived in November, after the armistice."
